Keeping Ep 2 Moving

At the moment, think of the action as the day after your arrival day. One night of sleep, Long Rest. Up the next morning to breakfast on the market then a late morning to noon tour of the city.
OOC:
Things to think about going into the game week....

At least Kray (could be everyone, but not necessarily, though Bryn seems important as translator) is supposed to go to the Hall of the Nasi with Magistrate Balanser tonight.

Three nights later, the whole crowd is supposed to go as guests of Balanser to The Garden Palace in The Rise, to enjoy a gala hosted by the Sar (King) himself!

On the morning after that, the city will be in a time of work adjustment, diet restriction, and religious ritual called Shuvael. This time of devotion will last for six days.

I want to let this moment be sort of fast and loose.

Everyone may want to break off on side missions, or maybe everyone wants to stay together.

I can review some hooks teased earlier, but hoping for you guys to send some general goals or at least leanings.

What are your questions?
What things do you want to do?
Where do you want to go?
WTF, Y?

Yes yes, y'all! To the beat, y'all!

To prime the pump a little, here are some old links from Interim 1 during which we speculated some ideas about why to make this journey and target Gelshemish as a destination:

Why Gelshemish?
Possible Loot and Artifacts

Now that you guys have seen some of the culture, met some of the people, there may be other adventures to get into. These can come up organically in the flow, but I suspect that you guys have some ideas about how you may want to get the ball rolling towards one investigation or another.

The Slave Yards

The slave auction block and a small set of slave stockades are located in the Plaza District. The group passes by that during the tour.

Ivor snarls at the scene in disgust, then someone calls out to him from the crowd....
Feb 12, 2018 10:00 pm
He speaks in Yuoric. "I'd buy that big Dannein brute there. I would wager he would make me a mountain of coin in a year's time...."

Everyone looks over to see who is taking. It is a big gladiator, a Kortellan for sure by the way of his accent and his complexion. He walks out from the crowd. Everyone can see that he is dressed in full battle gear, so now the crowd is looking on.

https://dl.dropbox.com/s/2eko9h20qpspj47/Cedrio%20Bronzehanded.jpg

He has a scowl of a face at first, but then it cracks into a wry smile when he continues "...the only problem would be that I would be dead the first time my overseer got drunk on his post one night."

The fellow can not keep the charade for long though. Hs scowl mask melts into a smile. He steps forward strongly to grip arms with Ivor. "You must be lost, Connal's son. What strong wind has blown you in to this cottage town, you heavy dog! Hahaha!"

Ivor knows this man. It is an old friend and fellow gladiator. He is Cedrio, called Bronzehanded.

Cedrio was a slave fighter like Ivor at the Helm of Nicor, a great arena in the Pylosean port of Sinacuse. Ivor remembers that Cedrio won his freedom about one year before Ivor himself escaped from the arena and fled from Pylos. He remembers Cedrio's final match, but never saw him after.

Back in the day, Cedrio was a crowd favorite. He used to beat men to death with all sorts of weaponized gauntlets.

Ivor remembers his former look, when he was younger:

Feb 13, 2018 2:32 pm
Kray jibed at Ivor's expense. "It would seem your renown is without borders. Steeped in moments of infamously brutal bloodletting, no doubt."

My primary interest is still taking the Red Bastion for everything it's got. Prior to that, first I'd want to go for the Scriptures, then the Key to the Small Irons Gate, then the The Pale Star, also called The Sight of Ilusa (my primary interest in the Red Bastion itself).

And Kray will definitely play the gracious noble and attend all engagements. Besides, those events will undoubtedly serve as some great intel gathering sessions.
Feb 13, 2018 3:25 pm
"Cedrio! You son of a whore!" Ivor roars, a smile splitting his scarred (and now burnt) face. "I came looking for your ugly face, of course! You still owe me for all those dice games you lost!"

The Circle of the Valiants

Cedrio has a good laugh with Ivor. Soon the men are talking about updates. Cedrio left Sinacuse about four years ago. Immediately after his match which granted him his freedom, he was offered a large box full of silver to travel here to Gelshemish and become a trainer here in the city at an up and coming arena. It is called the Circle of the Valiants. Cedrio invites Ivor to see it nearby.

The venue is pretty solid, as fighting pits go. It certainly no coliseum like those of Pylos and Kortella, but what the circle lacks in size and dramatics, it makes up for in facilities, decor, and style. Like much of Gelshemish, the attention to detail in the architecture is outstanding, and the stone polishing and trim work throughout is top grade.

The Valiants is a newer arena, less that ten years from its completion. Cedrio explains that the Sar and some of the Nasi directors wanted to develop a gaming culture in the city after hearing of the success of those in the great cities of the Alornic Sea. They have invested strong money in it and the industry has been on the rise.

Cedrio explains that the Heshbaans do run some death games, but most often those are from hardened criminals who are sentenced to train and then fight one another. The slaves that are put into the games do have to face fatal matches from time to time, but more often they are pitted against one another in brawling and bludgeoning matches, and also wrestling, which is a big hit here. They even use the circle for races and games and contests of strength. Also, many times they display ferocious animals, sometimes pitting them against the criminals or the slaves.

Cedrio says that it is quite strange compared to the port games, but at the same time he has gotten used to it, and it has come to be a good business.

Cedrio is one of the three trainers and directors at the Valiants.
The other two are:
Ghurat: an older Heshbaan warrior who specializes in wrestling, boxing, and organizing personnel with the promoters
Hamamid: a Bishtu sword and stick fighter who really whips the fighters into shape

Ivor meets these guys and some of the other directors. Most are impressed that Ivor was a gladiator from the Helm of Nicor.

Cedrio does not ask how it was that Ivor gained freedom. As a fellow gladiator, Cedrio knows that sometimes those stories can be the toughest to revisit because it often means you had to kill someone great, who was perhaps a friend. Also, if it was an escape, then maybe that does not need to be talked about either.

Cedrio does though propose a toast to a legend in our day, to Mighty Apox Indomitable.
May he live in the house that the gods prepared for him
OOC:
(a saying of respect to the most renown and favored gladiators.)
Cedrio tells Ivor to come by anytime for anything. He can use this place as a place to stay even if he wants. They run some pretty good dice here too among the trainers, promoters, managers - so Ivor should come by anytime if he wants to throw bones and game. Not sure if Ivor is looking for work or not, but let him know. He would love to have Ivor as a guest trainer if he's interested, and there would be decent pay in it.

One thing that catches Ivor's eye is that in the animal cages, there are a set of massive hounds. They don't look supernatural like the hounds from the forest, but they are exceptionally large and look truly ferocious.

Ezeriah says:

My primary interest is still taking the Red Bastion for everything it's got.
You guys could run a surveillance or recon on the Red Bastion. It is in a largely abandoned area of the Shrine District.
Also might be worthwhile to dive into research at a local level. What do the people of Gelshemish say about this weird stronghold that is completely locked up?
Ezeriah says:

...Prior to that, first I'd want to go for the Scriptures, ....
The Scriptures of the Replica of Seki. Bryn hears all kinds of references to these, thinks they are here, but would really have to dive into the religious scene to gain ground on a lead. The leading religious order (if not the only sanctioned one here) are the Dasnishiat. They proclaim the law and teachings of Goldna ad Dashnish, the renown god of the Heshbaan culture as a whole. The Dasnishi meet in places of worship, teaching, ritual and study called tzocharcomat. Bryn would probably need to lead the way on trying to build up some cred and maybe infiltrate some of these joints, to learn enough to gain ground on this mystery.
Ezeriah says:

...then the Key to the Small Irons Gate....
Bryn thinks he has a decent idea on this already. There is supposed to be an old strong box or hidden vault case where the Key is locked away, perhaps still in secrecy. This reference comes from a more recent writing (only about a century and a half ago), which makes it quite out of the ordinary. The scroll says that the box is hidden within the mortar of a hearth in the lower level of the Royal Palace of the Sar.

The box is of Halonian origin. Halon was an ancient high tech culture that disappeared abruptly around 8,000 years ago. Halonian artifacts are among the most mysterious in all history, because they predate even the other ancient cultures. Bryn may be just as motivated to seeing the Halonian box in fact. That in itself would be quite a discovery.

The box is said to have the emblem of a Phoenix carved into its front plate. It is also known to be trapped with ancient mechanisms and perhaps even magical hexes, as deterrents to thieves. Bryn spent most of last year trying to build the specialized tools that can supposedly be used to subdue Halonian technology.
Ezeriah says:

...then the The Pale Star, also called The Sight of Ilusa (my primary interest in the Red Bastion itself)...
This one is a real puzzle. Bryn does not even know what this item is, what it looks like, nor what it does exactly. Nonetheless, its capability and mystery is spoken of as legendary, though perhaps a little bit frightening.
Ezeriah says:

And Kray will definitely play the gracious noble and attend all engagements. Besides, those events will undoubtedly serve as some great intel gathering sessions.
The first one on the schedule will be this evening for the characters.
OOC:
I think we should try to game that scenario to get the most out of it. I can send something like a data dump if you guys want to autopilot that, but as Ez says, it could have a big upside on intel. Plus you never know if these sorts of parties get crazy.

Mini-scene ideas
OOC:
I want to zero in on some actionable exchanges between all of us, based on interest and real chance of participation on the boards. I suggest people who can actively post between now (Tues) and Friday pick to kick off one or multiple of the ideas below.

If you are pinned down on RL stuff, no problem. We can say those characters are just doing other stuff for the day/evening.

Let me know what you think. For those ready to engage, put me on the right assignment.
Possibilities:

* Investigate the Red Bastion surrounding and exterior.

* Start engaging with the priest community called the Dasnishi, with hopes of getting a lead about where they keep their oldest or most important writings

* Start figuring out ideas to recon the Palace of the Sar (for the idea of finding the strongbox and key)

* Kray plus friends take on the Nasi Hall party in active play

* Come up with some other mission to learn anything else that piques interest (final fate of Koral?, what is going on with the Hechesi insurgents?, who/what is Agnon-Sami? who/what is Iz Jeddriss)
Feb 13, 2018 9:23 pm
Gaming Nasi Hall sounds good, and might get us some info on some or all of the concepts J mentioned.

Recon of the Sar's Palace for the Key could be done on the night we go to his party. I imagine security would be tight. Getting caught would uberfuck us, to be sure. A distraction might serve well that night. Then it might just be a question of sending in the right PC's (Bryn+) to finish the job. That party is a few days from now so...

We could definitely do some recon of the Red Bastion before then. Casually recon by day and take a closer look at night.

I wonder if the Scripture would have info on the Red Bastion. Maybe we pick up those scrolls on the way out of town. Does Bryn have any idea of what the scrolls have info on?

As the sun sets, Kray is riding on horseback alongside Honorable Balanser, who is riding a horse beside him. Everyone else is walking. Balanser has an entourage of about 10 servants and guards. Gibon walks along beside Kray, available for translation. Manage Hasa walks alongside Balanser for the same.

Through Hasa's Yuoric, Balanser asks, "What sort of exchange will you discuss with the Nasi and the barristers of the Sar? Do you have any goals for your visit, anything that House Mercon would like to offer on behalf of you House Father Habbiacus, or on behalf of a greater Jeresian nobility?"

They are bound for the Hall of the Nasi in the Shrine District.
OOC:
This can be just Kray rolling nobility mode and Gibon running translation if that is all the participation. If anyone else wants to join in, the more the merrier - post away and they are in the entourage, looking buffed out, Advantage on Intimidation checks.
Except for Bryn. But he looks really smart and mysterious... if he's there, Ox. Bahaha!

OOC:
Bryn says it is highly doubtful that the scrolls convey anything specifically on the Red Bastion. They are much much older, and are cross referenced most on magic and occult ritual. They were apparently, Bryn thinks anyway, written by a small group of dessert cultist in ancient Zutaran who somehow raised an snake man sorcerer from an epoch even further in the distant past, and then proceeded to take part in ancient magics and drug use under his tutelage. Weeeeeiird.
Feb 14, 2018 3:49 pm
Kray was silent for a moment, projecting ease. "It is my understanding that there is an uprising of sorts." He paused, allowing the Honorable Balanser to anticipate the offer. "Surely this uprising needs... resolution, shall we say? Some of House Mercon's finest mercenaries are in my personal retinue. I assure you that I can arrange that resolution. It would be an honor, and a pleasure, to do so."

Balansar speaks as he rides beside Kray. Hasa translates it in with perfect Yuoric, with broad vocabulary.

"Hmmm. Your men are manhunters. Soldiers who can quell chaos by striking at its source of lawbreakers." He nods his head in thought. "Yes, perhaps Our Beloved Sar would like to hear options about the elimination of the Hechesi problem. That stubborn group of logs must know that they are heading towards a bloody duel, and one which they will surely lose. These stabbings will not be tolerated. Who knows? - Perhaps the entire Swamp will need to be purged to root out those rabblers. I suspect that they are willing to die for their many-eyed god, and perhaps they will soon."

He rides a little further, thoughtful again before he slowly speaks again, never in a hurry - Balanser. "What do you say about the other Markelanders who are here? They are mercenary warriors as well, with many troops already. Some training the Gilded Armsmen. Will you and your Danneins be a competitor to the Korvarans, or do the Lords of Jeres unify with their workings?"

OOC:
Ez, I'm going to make a ruling that Thorn is with Kray. Not sure if X can get on, but it makes since to me that Thorn would not accept Kray going alone.
That's the only auto-pilot I'm running though. Anyone else needs to get on manually if they are in. Not required though unless you want to talk or act in this nobility party. Is it a dog-and-pony show or a big pimpin' players' club afterparty? You don't know yet.
Feb 15, 2018 2:28 pm
One side of Kray's mouth turned upward in an almost imperceptible mocking smile. "I believe other interested parties would find themselves unable to quell such an uprising, given that I'll have cut the head of the snake off by then and fed their many-eyed god to some hungry street urchins."

His thoughts went back to the battle on the river. Fucking Korvarans. Kray feigned a passing interest, as if making small talk. "Tell me of these Korvarans."

If I'm not mistaken, it was Korvarans on the river, right?

OOC:
Sorry, been off for a bit. Ez must have given me his flu... I think I'm bouncing back now though.

Yeah, DMJ, Thorn is with Kray, and Ez, nice work recounting our reasons for being here.

At some point if there's time, Thorn would like to check in on Oram and Koral to see if there's any update on the sick man.

Finally, my two cents: What do you all think about going for the key first? It's literally the key to possibly acquiring two of the other treasures on the list. We can do some recon at the party, and then use the key later on with a better idea of the Red Bastion's layout, and go after the Star and the Jewels. Thoughts?

Balanser continues:

"A large company of them works alongside the Sar. They barrack up on The Rise. There is a war captain leading them. Acastus is his name, if I remember. His men are training the Sar's armsmen in the ways of Korvaran war."

Speaking slowly, he pauses briefly, then reflects more. "There are more soldiers now. More men are called to arms. I do not know why the Sar builds his forces larger and larger."
OOC:
Kray knows exactly who Acastus (ah-CAS-tus) is. He is a veteran leader in the Iron Legions, the mercenary military organization based in Korvar. His father Marabus was a legendary field commander in the Korvaran army.

Kray knows Marabus's other son as well. Acastus' younger brother....Valates.

Kray thinks back to Valates' last moments.

Cool, X. I'm picturing Thorn there, so join in as you see fit. Thorn, familiar with some info about the Iron Legions, would likely know the name of Acastus as well.

Tracking down Oram to get an update or even tracking down Koral for visit seems to be in play. We can look into that idea after this party?

That flu can burn in hell. Good to have you back in the land of the living, X.

You nailed it on the Key. With Bryn's insight on the utility for the Scriptures relative to the Bastion, we definitely nab the Key first to smoothe access to the rich stuff in the Bastion, back door style. I believe the Scriptures we do on the way out of town, if possible.

The Star supposedly is a treasure locator we could use, if stories hold up. The jewels are a payday, I think.
