Kray pulls out a torch and goes to work with his tinderbox.

Let's get a better look.

After a few short moments pause to light a torch, Kray shines a some fire light into the entry room.

It is a bit startling at first as the light and resulting shadows glide through the room. Kray is the first to see the image, but others standing close enough see it as well.

Starting several steps away from the door and continuing further back into room, a collection of older era statues stand scattered through the room.

The statues, mostly simple and subtle in design and detail, are all facing the door and the southern wall. They are not positioned as corner or sidewall decor, as most statues often are. Instead they are placed intermittently, haphazardly, generally in the middle area of the room, with no semblance of order.

It is quite strange. With their wide hollow eyes and humbly clasped hands, the statues almost seem like lifeless attendees, waiting patiently with a blank indifference, but also watchful.

The back edges of the room are not clearly visible because of the limitations of the light and the obstruction of detail caused by long shadows cast backwards from the statues.

Kray is the first to notice a smell of stagnation. And rot. Wafting out now from the inside of the building.

What's the approximate illumination of the torch?

DMJ says:
Xorthan says:
Thorn straps Urdav's blade in place and hefts one of the crowbars. ...His mask feels hot against his face.
...
OOC:
In the end it is up to you guys, but I had sort of envisioned that the group had ditched the Ruet mask/robes at the final overwatch cache site at some point in time before the final crossing into the inner courtyard.

Those covers were required to move through the city during the day, and also very important to pass into the walled off Old Temple section. Also surely had them on at the moment when y'all broke away from the permitted area and made the dash to the cache site breaking the law. This may be the time when X is describing the feelings and movement with Thorn.

...

Probably this is much talk over something obvious, but just wanted to make sure in case I need to correct my idea of how everyone is suited.
OOC:
Sounds good, J; I was envisioning Thorn getting annoyed with the mask nearing the point of removing it before entering the palace. Consider him unmasked.

OOC:
I found this references about torch light.
Summary: torch kicks out lighting for about 20', with another 20' of dimmer light.

If we go with that it would mean that the majority of the room (Room 9) is illuminated to some extent, more at the area from the south entry up to about the middle of the room and less clear at the outer edges beyond and off to the sides.

The entry point has a short wall-thickness length of hallway that would likely chop the lighting and line of sight angles to some degree, making it hard to discern what is off on angle left and angle right, but pretty clear looking straight ahead which gives the vision of the weirdo statues.

As mentioned above, the clutter of the statues muddles longer range sight also with both the statues themselves and the obscuring shadows that they cast behind them.

"Well," Ivor growls, "are we doing this or what?"
May 5, 2018 6:45 pm
I hear you Jabes. It's go time.

Nothing else needed to be said. Preparations had been made and there was a plan to execute. For a fleeting moment, Kray considered the Fates mood, wondering if they were feeling particularly cruel today.

Fuck the Fates.

He dismissed the thought. Kray was committed to the endeavor at hand, not to mention he wasn't even certain if he believed in the Fates. And, given their exfiltration plan, time was of the essence.

With an eye toward the shadows, darkness and his steps, Kray moves cautiously into the room, torchlight slowly pushing back the darkness.
May 5, 2018 8:37 pm
Sizhen twirls a cast iron pike dagger in alternating hands, like a prize fighter warming up for a big fight. His eyes do not leave the direction of the statues as he speaks.

"I caution everyone, do not believe for a second that we are in control here. This is its sanctum and it has had a long time to prepare for company."

"I'd wager that rotting smell is a good start. We follow it, we find Iz Jeddriss."
OOC:
Golem made of aborted fetuses incoming, guys. I'm calling it right now.

The group moves in, quickly passing through the choke point of the short hall at the door. They shift in, some moving forward a few more steps and some stepping to the side to spread the formation.

The light of Kray's torch pours into the room. Now Kray and the others in the lead are only a few feet away from the closest of the statues. The details of the room become more visible.
[ +- ] Map. Reference Room 9
Room 9 Features:
High Vaulted Ceiling. At least 20'
Statues: placed haphazardly facing south door and south wall, mostly within squares in the center area generally
East (R) windows: heavy wood board shutters closed with interior reinforcement of bronze bands bolted to wall, ceiling, and floor
West (L) exit: heavy wood and banded door closed, interior reinforcement of bronze bands bolted to wall, ceiling, and floor
North (ahead) exit: appearance of cross-banded portcullis-like door
NE (top right) Corner: a couple of old burlap tarps draped out covering something lying on the floor, at first glance it looks like it might be covering bodies or corpses
Other: foul stench of body odor and rotting meat

Required Action: Bryn make active Perception Check
May 7, 2018 3:33 am
Bryn watches carefully and keep his eyes moving, checking front and back not knowing what to expect. Bryn also shared in the same concern as Sizhen after their fight with the Golem "Yes, the bruises on Treces ribs can be a reminder to the rest of you to not get too close to the statues."

Bryn scans the area trying to ignore the putrid stench.

Bryn does a quick glance at the room ahead. Getting a glimpse of the barred thresholds ahead, he immediately checks backwards.

Up high on the wall, above the south door through which the group entered, Bryn sees a door sized panel protruding. It has latch mechanisms around and a chain hanging above. Though what is behind the panel is not visible, Bryn can guess: a door, portcullis, or obstruction that can be dropped and raised. The system looks operational.

It's a trap!

At the exact moment Bryn realizes this, a loud clack sounds out. Bryn sees one of the levers on the apparatus above the door pivot counterclockwise and then stop abruptly. Another latch is released. The chain starts to pull from weight released below it. A loud sound of sliding metal.

Bryn sees the portcullis falling down behind him.
OOC:
Ox, Bryn was granted this chance to spot this because of his rear guard assignment, Alert feat, and his general familiarity with locks, doors, defense obstacles.
A falling portcullis behind the party. What can be done about it? Some options below.
They are a bit subjective, judged by positioning and PCs capabilities to come up with something in a split second that seems realistic.
1) Bryn shouts warning, allows him and Sizhen to get a chance to dive back outside by way of DEX saves. DC 13 for Bryn. DC 14 for Sizhen. Whoever is outside will face it that they are going to be separated from the group by the portcullis at that point.

2) Bryn shouts warning to try to get a group effort to catch the portcullis as it falls. Maeriks would be the key to any chance of success here. If Bryn and Sizhen offer Action to support with a daring catch-to-slow attempt, Maeriks could get there to provide the brute force for an attempt to stop and hold the gate just in the nick of time. Would be a DC 18 STR Athletics check for Maeriks, made with one normal roll, not at Advantage. Unfortunately, some risk of damage on this option.

3) Let the gate shut. Keep everyone together inside.

What do you do?
(Bryn needs to shout a warning and maybe give some quick direction to give options to Maeriks and/or Sizhen. If he does, Sizhen/Maeriks get to choose any of the above, or anything else of course.)

Everyone hears the loud metal clanging and slide of the falling portcullis.

For those in the front, there is little to be done about it back at the south door. Everyone locks into full attention though, ready for anything, scanning the statues, the barred windows and doorways, the entire room.

Thorn notices it first. The tarps draped on the floor in the far right corner begin to shift.

Something beneath them is starting to move.

What do you do?
(Seems like this is for Trece, Ivor, Thorn, Kray as others have options backwards. But forward choices are possible for everyone, so we'll see)

PLAYERS UP!
May 7, 2018 12:47 pm
Thorn's sword slides free of its sheath as he growls a low warning to the others:

"My right; tarps are moving."

Remembering hard lessons from a year ago, he adds:

"Tight together now!"
May 7, 2018 1:32 pm
Bryn yells to the others to grab their attention "MAERIKS! SIZHEN! BEHIND!" he then braces for the impact of the porticullis.

OOC:
CB, BIG MAER IS UP!!
OOC:
I think anyway. Ox, "Bryn...braces for impact..." means attempt to stop it (Option 2)? or just stand back (Option 3)?
Optional Action: Maeriks can attempt DC 18 STR Athletics attempt to stop the portcullis before it falls and locks.
May 7, 2018 2:50 pm
OOC:
yes, I meant to specify option 2. Trying help Maeriks with Bryns pipe-cleaner arms.
May 7, 2018 6:31 pm
Kray reflexively drew Serpent's Judgement, the serrated Otessite blade now relaxed at his side, pointed toward the floor.

His demeanor was nonchalant, professional. "Mind those tarps, gentlemen."

J, does it seem like setting the tarp on fire will pose a real out of control fire risk given the structure/materials of the building?

OOC:
Stone floors and walls. Minimal to none on other flammable material in the room. High ceilings.
No. It seems nearly impossible for a burning tarp to put the room or building at fire risk.
