"Well done. Should've been a locksmith. Safer line of work." To the point, Kray stood next to Bryn, eyeing the opening, torch held forward to reveal what lay beyond. He raised his voice just enough for all present to hear. "Speaking of, we've plenty more to do."

Kray had noticed Iasu's apparent knack for recon, not to mention the odd man's familiarity with the turf. "Let's move along. Eyes out for traps."

Thinking we keep guys with stealth, perception and investigation up front. I think Iasu is an ideal point man as designed by Jabes. Kray has great stealth and good perception. I believe Bryn rocks good stealth, perception and(?) Investigation. We could also use an Alert and perceptive rear guard, with stealth being less of a factor there.

Positioning is important and we a know J will take it into account for combat and traps.

Iasu nods and prepares to lead the group to the rally point once the Keys are secured. He never strays far from Akkeen for too long, constantly casts concerned glances in the tattooed man's direction.

Bryn took a deep breath in through his nose, as if almost to inhale the contents of the box, then exhaled with a satisfied huff. It is opened. The work and preparation all coming to fruition. Bryns face is a mask, he is calm, his hands steady, his focus unwavering. The next step will soon be accomplished.

Wealth had been a byproduct of the studious work he had done and the discoveries made and successful jobs completed leading to this point. That was once the goal, to gain material wealth after experiencing a more sophisticated lifestyle that was such a far cry from the simple life of the Danneinkiff.

That wasn’t the goal anymore.

Knowledge, this too was no longer the goal. It has its benefits, but it was a means to an end. Power. Yes, power, that is what Bryn now craved.

Bryn takes the bag, and slowly, meticulously inspects each of the tools. He gazes in awe of the unmatched craftsmanship, the geometry so perfect that he almost becomes mesmerized by their design and fantasizes about their use. He places each tool into the bag and places them safe, away in his sachel. He takes the last piece, the stone tablet, and places it on top of the black book. He rests his gaze on the key for a moment longer and then stows both the book and the key away.

The pact has been made.

Maeriks takes up position in the middle of the group, close enough to the rear that his glaive's reach can come into play immediately, distant enough from the front that his still somewhat shakey feat don't set off traps and alert inattentive creatures.

He takes a moment to look around as he checks over his pack, positions his dagger, counts his javelins. These men. This adventure. They are here to raid and plunder a great treasure, then live like fat kings until the food and women drain them of their wealth. Even with death resting a cold hand on each of his shoulders now, Maeriks feels a great warmth from the cohesion of the group, of this band of brothers.

Satisfied all his gear is in order, he takes out a torch and quickly lights it, the yellow glow flickering off of the backs of the others. "Hey Mercon, this is serious work we do now. I wanted to tell a joke, but I lit a torch instead."

Moving carefully through the west exit, the group follows Iasu. They move tactically in full battle readiness, looking for any sign of ambush or confrontation.

After moving through several underground halls and down one stretch of stairwell, Iasu leads into a room that breaks open larger than the rest, with the ceiling raising high again, similar to that in the great hearth room.

This room is a mix of high design and natural stone, as if the large chamber was mostly finished, finely cut in the bedrock of the earth beneath the palace above. But then parts of the room are still large outcroppings of uncut rock. It is impossible to discerned if this was intentional by design or a result of a halted project. It was built in a past age and its story is lost.

Littered on the ground are huge rectangular blocks of stone, all of which have etching upon them. The enormous weights are cast about in disorder, some laying tilted atop of one another. Most would be waist or chest height if stood up straight next to a man. It would take a team of pack animals or dozens of slaves with rope and chain apparatus to move even one of the blocks. It is hard to imagine what would have knocked them all astray here in this space as they are.

But whatever happened must have happened long long ago. As with the other rooms in the Adriyalet House, everything in the room is covered with dust, grime, webs, filth. Signs of rodents and bugs. Another setting of neglect and degradation.

In a back corner, offset from center on the lengthy western wall of the grand chamber, Iasu points it out...

The Eagle Door.

OOC:
For sizing reference, the top of a tall man's head would reach up to nearly a foot under the central circular piece of the door. That means the top of the door is somewhere about 13 feet high.

A small area of light to the side reveals that the other team is already here.

Elam holds a torch and raises a hand to signal and speaks in Heshbaan...

The two groups rejoin and assess results of both missions.

One of the biggest developments is that Namtur, the hulking armored warrior, is injured. He has been stabbed in the belly. The wound is serious, but surprisingly he is dealing with it. He sits in pain, with Adar-Malic doing his best to treat him. He was injured in combat.

There was a battle against Naram and his beasts. Adar-Malic's alchemy worked and the entire pack of hounds and most of the spiders were destroyed. Naram himself was almost defeated, but Ubaratu intervened and stabbed Namtur with a great spear. The Rabisu were able to escape back to their fortifications.

Akkeen relates the encounter with the edimmu, including the slaying of the largest ones, the fearsome mushussu. Elam listens carefully and is impressed with the news.

Akkeen highlights most of all that Bryn found the hidden Halonian Box of the Phoenix and recovered its contents, Halonian High Craft Keys.
Nov 24, 2018 2:06 pm
Elam lets out a grand laugh and gives a clap on the shoulder to Bryn. "Well done I say, Lord Dannein."

He gets right to it to ask Kray, "Might the Eagle Door be the next to yield under the steel and guile of the North!"
Nov 24, 2018 2:10 pm
Adar-Malic takes notice of the story of the Halonian tools and the use of the Black Book as Akkeen recounts it.

The twins move to the side and discuss amongst themselves. Adar-Malic provides more detail about the successful trap laid against Naram and the hounds.

Namtur speaks to Iasu in Heshbaan, "I almost had him," the big warrior relays with frustration. He still wears his helmet.

"But now Naram has yet again slipped from my grasp. I pray that the Mighty God of Hesheb would deliver him into my hands so that I could deal out the wrath that he deserves."

Bryn takes off the backpack of newly captured Halonian tools and sets to work. To onlookers, the effort looks strangely similar to Bryn's last task of opening the box safe within the hearth column. But this time the task is on a larger scale with the larger set of tools. Where before they were hand-held pocket tools, these are large-sized levers, rods, and fulcrums. He inserts them at different ports, uses other tools to connect to them and turn, pull, and tilt them. After a few minutes, several handles and rods are sticking out from different openings in the great door.

Bryn steps back and looks at all of his work, and then references his book. He is lost in study. Totally focused.

He then pulls out another bag and draws out another one of the pod-like cocoons and breaks it. A creature peels out. It' legs, antennae, and small tentacles writhe as Bryn holds it by its back. He looks closely at the creature as it squirms and then … places it on his wrist. Without delay the small creature locks on and seems to pierce Bryn's wrist with its small snout!

Bryn shows no surprise though. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. He sits down on his knees in front of his book laid out before him. For about a minute, he breathes in and out in me measured breaths.

When he opens his eyes, he scans the entire door for several seconds then shifts back into motion. Meticulously he gathers every tool and puts them back into the leather backpack, each in its place.

He looks at the large circular center of the door carefully. He draws out two tools, one in each hand. One is a straight handle with a strange thin fitting at the base. The other is some sort of screw with a cross grip handle on it.

Bryn asks for a lift from Maeriks to reach the high center of the door. Maeriks easily hoists him up on his shoulders.

With a deep breath Bryn slides the straight handle into a near invisible slot on the left side of the cylinder rim. He slides the tool around clockwise, stopping at a low left position. Holding this point steady, he inserts the cross handled screw tool directly into the center of the cylinder with his right hand. A twist gives a loud click.

Bryn looks over at Kray briefly, then looks up in the air off to the side, as if picturing the interior of the door where his hand is extended. He closes his eyes and heaves a strong turn. A deep loud clank.

Bryn pulls straight back. CHOCK!

And then a rumbling chugging sound within the walls, a rumble and clatter. Somewhere a weight is moving. A chain is rolling. It last for about 12 seconds and the stops with a thud. A last BOOM and CLACK rings out. Huge structural sounds inside of the threshold around the door.

Bryn climbs down. Breathes heavy and nods to Kray, but then looks down at the ground. He is sweating profusely. He reaches over and carefully pulls the small creature from his wrist, drops it to the ground. It lies there wrangling and squirming.

Using a hook handled tool, Bryn moves over to the right side of the door, inserts on the edge, turns, and pulls.

With no sound whatsoever...the giant door glides forth into the room, pivoting on the great hinges on the opposite wall as it swings open.

On the inside center, designed in great glory - an elaborate polished bronze eagle, it's wings spread the length of the entire door in its majesty.

Bryn wobbles and nearly collapses, but rights himself and puts away his last tool in the bag.

Bryn suffers Disadvantage Ability Checks for next 10 minutes.

"He has done it," Elam says. The swordsman's face is deep in thought as if even he has to contemplate the impacts of this great feat.

The Cursed gather around, seeking to make last plans with their new allies before entering the halls beyond the Eagle Door.

Elam speaks out final warnings, making it clear that the chambers beyond are the most dangerous. Suter-Set will use his treachery - black magic and illusion. Naram will send all of his beasts and slaves that he has left. The edimmu will stalk and crawl and swarm. And the Rabisu will know that they must stand their ground - the others are warriors and brutes. They will not run. They will not give away this territory. They will defend it at all costs.
Nov 26, 2018 3:02 pm
Akkeen speaks up a warning of his own, "We must make haste. Last night Suter-Set took in at least two sacrifices. He will have prepared them through the day. They are likely already offered. If not then they will be soon."

Adar-Malic nods his head in agreement. Elam considers the words and stares grimly.

"He will have made a new summoning, with full ceremony to answer the Ruet observance," Akkeen continues, a serious worry in his voice. "The timing could not be worse for us in this matter. It will be...something terrible."
Nov 26, 2018 3:07 pm
"You should be glad you were not one of the sacrifices, Lord Ka Shalim.." Adar-Malic bites at Ahri, with a bit of a dismissive tone. "Your noble blood would already be in the fires now, and you would be wishing your own death to end the agony."
Nov 26, 2018 3:19 pm
"Enough of this womanly gossip of menstruation blood and witchery!," Namtur barks out. "I tire of delays and quibbling. I go now to deliver the wrath of Goldna ad Dasnish to devils and murderers. My brother will finally be avenged."

The big Myrmidon already has the war club Reave, a gift from Maeriks, at his side. He grips the mighty weapon in both gloved hands now and marches forward.
