Hey everyone, Chief12justice brought up a good point today. He was asking about what I want to do with my character in combat so he can better support me. This is such a good question that I thought we could all share this information so we can all support each other best.

All of this below is what I'm thinking right now, but it could change based on what other people say.

When I made Sariel [that's spelled without a U by the way :) ] she could have gone either range or melee. Given the group having a lot of ranged fighters and spell slingers, I decided to focus on melee. Sometimes you just need a speed bump while your DPS guys in the second rank take down the big bad, and I think she can play the role even with a 10 Con (I rolled some pretty meh stats).

She'll probably start off holding the front line, trusting in a 17 AC and the shield spell, plus her rechargeable temp HP from the Fiendish Vigor invocation. If the combat runs long those will fail her or get used up, and then the plan is to disengage and start eldritch blasting with the rest of the ranged attackers.

I plan on using her unlimited illusion making capacity in the same way I have been with minor illusion, placing additional targets on the battlefield to soak up an action or two, or to set up some shenanigans before combat begins (cover up the spiked pit with a solid rock illusion or something).

Sariel will benefit a lot from short rests, which recharge her spell slots.

Eventually I hope to multiclass paladin, which matches a DM side quest for the character, which will give her some more hit points, self healing, and more spell slots for shielding.

People can best help Sariel by killing enemies fast (haha, our dice rolls haven't made that easy!) and debuffing her melee partners. It will definitely help if there is another person who can take on a tank / melee role. Healing her is also appreciated!

That's great to know! Thanks, dude!

Ultimately, Gu'lorg is going to grab a longsword and some better armor so that he can fight melee, too, but he's going to be a secondary melee, coming in after some spells have gone off.

Gu'lorg is going to grab some battlefield control in order to shape the fighting space to our liking, and then he will eventually start slamming.

Right now, I have feather fall prepared, along with 3 ranged attack spells (Ice Knife, Chromatic Orb, and Witch Bolt), and I grabbed 2 battlefield control spells (Fog Cloud and Grease). I think Grease would help you if you needed to disengage from the assailants, lenpettier.

I can also use mage hand if needed to give a potion to an ally or something to that effect, and my attack cantrip is Ray of Frost, which will potentially reduce the speed of attackers, too.

I believe, from the character sheets I can view and sans temp HP, Rymente has the highest base HP and the second highest AC behind Sariel so he is capable of tanking; the only problem is my luck isn't—DM's roll high against me and I find it difficult to hit the broad side of a barn. That said Rymente, potentially, has the ability do a massive amount of damage (1d4+2d10+3) and can do this three times. So I guess the biggest help Rymente can get (mostly due to the dice hating me) is advantage.
[ +- ] You don't have to tank if there isn't anything left to hit you.
Next level, not to mention the other juicy stuff he gets, he'll be a god at crowd control (As an action, you create a wall of wood at least one portion of which must be within 60 feet of you. The wall is 60 feet long, 15 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall lasts until your concentration ends. Each 5-foot wide section of the wall has AC 12 and 100 hit points. Breaking one section creates a 5-foot by 5-foot hole in it, but the wall otherwise remains intact.)

Nice. Maybe we can switch off if Sariel gets too roughed up.

Sounds like a good set of spells! You probably know, but ice knife does friendly damage in the 5 foot AoE so thanks in advance for your cautious targeting :) Fog Cloud is a funny one. Have fun adjudicating a battle in a Fog Cloud, Sclasclemski!

Do you have the 50gp diamond for chromatic orb yet? Great offensive spell.

Also, we can collaborate on the positioning of illusionary features and your spells. For example, I could lay down an illusion on top of a Grease patch before combat begins.

Love the synergy between Ray of Frost and Grease. Sariel is mostly just an eldritch blast / hex kinda gal when she's not on the front line.

Great talking tactics with you :)

Leylin is ninja. 'nuff said :D

But seriously, he is pure-ranged attacker/scout/skill-monkey character. He can be a "face" and I'm quite tempted to multi-class as a rogue to get Expertise in stealth... :D

@chief12justice "Feather fall"? I honestly don't think it's that useful in most situations unless we're at high altitudes. And no Mage Armor? As for CC spells - "Sleep" is godly at our levels and "Tasha's Laughter" can also damage. Also "Ray of Sickness" both damages and CCs. Last, but not least - Detect Magic for ritual casting is a nice spell to have. Identify would be a bonus as well. Well, "you're a wizard, Harry", so you only need to find those spells and copy them to a book :) It's harder for my sorcerer I'm playing in IRL campaign - can only switch 1 spell at level up.

Wizards cannot change their spells in their spellbook, and feather fall was one I had prepped at first level. This town has nothing for me in terms of the arcane.

I wanted some other spells :(... oh well. I have Mage Armor, just not prepped. As a war mage, I also have Arcane Deflection, which is similar to a Shield spell, so for smaller combats, it works. I only have 3 first-level spell slots, and I wanted to help more magically.

Damn, I forgot that I don't have that diamond. Shoot! I guess chromatic orb is out.

For the near future, I'm also looking for a good longsword and a set of decent armor.

I suppose I should come clean. While I do have firebolt as a cantrip, it's from being a Sun Elf. I'm a Rogue, good time bringing this up since most archetypes don't come into play until level 3. I was also planning on being a front line fighter (dual wield my favorite) but have no problem switching it up to be more ranged. It seems like we have some melee figured out with at least three of you in some form or fashion going melee. I really haven't done much research into what rogue archetype I was going to pick at third level, so I'm fairly open. I don't even mind dipping into bard if we need some extra support.
Buuuuuuuuut.......
My character sheet, I'll be updating the one on here, I just have a much easier time using dicecloud especially on the go as much as I am.

Hey folks, I'm at a bit of an impasse here. I've been thinking about the game during my character's nap the past week. I have found my play style is significantly at odds with others' play styles in the group. I'm fairly sure people find the friction I'm causing a distraction and would rather get on with the game, and I have the feeling I'm making the game worse rather than better.

At the same time, I can't bring myself to get in line with the majority play style. It's not wrong or anything, its just not how I play or enjoy RPGs. If I continue, I think I'll be regularly annoyed and be annoying to most everyone else. So, I'm gonna drop out of the game before we go any further.

HypCo, you've been my partner in crime in this, and I'm leaving you in the lurch here. Sorry about that. We could go down in a blaze of glory together, but I am concerned this is not healthy for the game and hard on Sclasclemski. Please feel free to take charge of Sariel's character if you want to see this through. I can send the character sheet to you if you like.

Scalsclemski, this is by no way a criticism of your DMing which has been fair, balanced, and probably made a lot more difficult by the different competing personalities here! Thanks for doing a great job, and for giving Sariel some memorable moments to play with.

And to everyone else, I sincerely hope you all have a great time with this adventure. Take care!

I'm sorry to hear this as I have found the drama that has been created to be quite entertaining. I respect whatever decision you make, if you are not having fun then you shouldn't keep playing.

I think I may be setting sail in the same boat as Len. I make my characters and play them to the fullest, regardless how dangerous or stupid their actions may be; I don't pull blows if the situation calls for something the character may or may not do (Len knows this first hand). That said, Rymente is a broken man—a mind left to itself in solitary, rotting on boredom—he isn't stable. I love playing him but feel this isn't the game for him; a risk I knew coming in to this. In a party of inquisitive people and telepathy, he is prone to outbursts which sooner or later, due to his instability, will result in him attacking one of the party.

With that said, I want to make it crystal clear, that this is no way in fault of you or your ability to create an enjoyable game; I've enjoyed being a part of this game because of you. It falls on me for liking to make characters that are hit or miss. I don't want to step on anyone else's toes by playing a controversial character that could seep their enjoyment from this game. I am adamant that the first and most important rule in D&D is to have fun. I have fun making broken characters—compulsively overprotective with anger issues, mentally broken, split personalities, full of anxiety due to abuse—but my true enjoyment of the game comes from everyone else having fun.
