Matthias walks through the door that Elda opens, but glances curiously at the other door, What could be in there? This whole thing gives me the creeps...

Your escorts lead you up a long corridor. It quickly becomes evident that this place is bustling with guards. The first you meet are garbed all in black with gold eyes of fire embroidered upon tunic and cloak. They look sharp, loyal and alert. One at each end of the corridor, one in the middle and three in a small cavern at the end.

You approach a larger cavern, surrounded by the noise of moving armour and highly disciplined communication. There are evidently more guards around the corner, but they only speak when necessary. You spot two individuals who appear to be of greater rank. The room appears to be a barracks full of food and supplies.

One individual approaches you, clad in imposing, decorated armour. His stature and voice hold great authority.

"HALT. What intrusion is this?"

Aithne: "Lieutenant, we bring willing recruits as instructed. May we see Lareth?"

"Fool. Lareth is engaged. Your entourage is too big. Your instructions specified two recruits at most. WHO is your commander?"

Knees begin to shake!

Aithne: "Two each, sir. Two...each..."

Realising her mistake, she bows, careful not to turn her body away.

"Orders directly from Lareth, Lieutenant!"

Grumble chuckles. "No, no, no, you misunderstand! Ha-ha-ha! In the fight against evil, I've already been recruited!"

He pats Elda on the shoulder. "This charming young woman was telling us that we could join in common cause in that fight. To that end, they wanted us to meet Lareth. If he's busy now, we'll be content to rest, bathe, and sup a little before we meet him. Show us to the eating place and bring on the victuals!"

Seeing the lieutenant's face, he's quick to amend: "But of course I don't mean for you to show us there; you could just direct us…
to whomever we should talk to…
about the food…"
Dec 14, 2015 4:41 pm
Matthias is truly scared now. He doesn't know or trust these people and is worried that they've bitten off more than they can chew.

Matthias bows to the lieutenant, "We were brought here to join in a fight against evil. In spite of the misunderstanding we would still like to help. Perhaps while we wait for Lareth to become available we could find someone to fill us in on what we're signing up for?"
Dec 14, 2015 5:37 pm
Elda smiles at Grumble, barely making a turn so as not to anger her superior. She wants to speak but cannot.

The lieutenant's eyes blaze and you can see his large, armoured hand clutch tightly, like he was crushing a person's skull.

"Silence! Do you know who you are speaking to? I will consult with Lord Lareth and arrange for your recruitment, TWO at a time.

Commander Adar, station four men here to watch this rabble. Kill any that move!!

"Yes...yes, Lieutenant Vahni!"

The lieutenant leaves through a corridor to the right and enters a door at the end. The other soldiers give a fluid salute with their hands, a flame-like gesture.

"You may relax. I am commander Adan. I will answer any questions you may have, before you speak to Lord Lareth. After that we shall see to your accommodations and a bounteous meal."
Dec 14, 2015 6:08 pm
Grumble smiles and lets out a long, relieved sigh.

*For a moment there, I thought we weren't going to be fed...*
Dec 14, 2015 6:16 pm
Matthias' eyes light up at the possibility of asking any questions he likes and he pulls out a piece of parchment to write on, "Who's your leader? How long have you been here? How many of you are there? What's your mission? Where did you come from...?" question after question pours out of Matthias and he doesn't stop unless interrupted.
Dec 15, 2015 6:08 pm
"Lord Lareth, Lareth the Beautiful, is our great leader, a shining hope illuminating the path before us.

Our local division is small but bolstered with great fighters and even powerful mages. Our barracks here can accommodate two-dozen comfortably. Do not fear, there is space for all.

Our mission and purpose is complex, and you will learn more in time. I am sure that Elda has explained at least our basic aims to you. We will bring down the oppressors, those who presumptuously install themselves above us like masters to cattle. A new age of spirit and freedom is coming, and those like you who find The Way will lay claim to everything that a person could hope for. Your obedience will secure you power and wealth, you can be certain of that."

There is still no sign of the Lieutenant or Lareth, and it's hard to hear if anything is going on in the next room because of the number of bodies moving and working in this well-outfitted cavern.
Dec 15, 2015 6:34 pm
"Oppressors? I am certainly opposed to oppressors!"

Grumble looks for agreement from his fellows.

"But I have been in the wilderness for long years. Tell me, who are the oppressors currently in power?"
Dec 15, 2015 8:16 pm
"I'll not suffer oppressors of any color or shape. But if your Lareth demands 'obedience' of me then I say that's oppression of another sort."
Dec 17, 2015 5:47 pm
"You do not have to travel far to find the folly of man. The City of Greyhawk, harbouring criminals and building power structures to oppress those not born into power. Even dividing their cities to section off those whom they consider the lesser kind!

Then there is Verbobonc, and Veluna...championing themselves as beacons of civilisation but destroying the indigenous races that the gods meant to live in harmony with the land.

Even the ancient Kingdom of Keoland continues it's oppressive heirarchy, denying nature it's role to evolve and grow.

But Celene, oh knight...I have some respect. Their Kingdom no longer thinks itself so great to meddle in the foolish wars of the old kingdoms.

A new order will arise...one that will have the elements as its foundations, and the gods themselves will walk among us once again. Who doesn't want to see the world's glory made anew and the nations reborn in the power that the gods granted? Lareth will explain how this will be done, and how you can become a beacon of the new order of the world.

Your commitment to this cause is no less a burden than any other. With power, you will gain greater freedoms for yourself and all others!"

Elmo's knuckles crack as he pulls his hand tight at the mention of Verbobonc and Veluna. He eyes the group to catch their reactions, and you hear the jostle of armour in the room next to you.

Grumble exchanges a look with Kaxaon and Matthias that is intended to indicate how crazy these people are, but probably only makes him look crazy: slightly bugged-out eyes with a big grin. Oblivious to how he must appear, Grumble regrets coming into this lair even more.

"Indigenous races? How dare they!" Grumble searches his memory of various tomes and scrolls, trying to recall his history of the region. Who occupied the area originally? Were they humanoids? Giants? What?

After being healed, Anrin has been carried along with the party in something of a daze, his sense overwhelmed firstly by Grumble's incessant talking, and then by the new and threatening surroundings. At the mention of Celene by Adan, Anrin blinks and begins to take in the situation. Something in the commander's words stirs something in Anrin's heart - of overthrowing oppression and hierarchy and supporting nature, but the fire motifs, the darkness, the arbitrary threat of killing does not speak of goodness.

But Anrin, always hopeful that good may triumph even in the greatest darkness, sees an opportunity with Adan, and addresses him as cheerfully as he can in the circumstances, "I am pleased to hear of your esteem for Celene, and of your love for nature and freedom. Pray tell me, how did you first join this ... movement, and what services have you paid to Lareth since then?" He smiles at him, trusting in an affable response.

Grumble thinks that Adar is referring to the Hateful Wars, which he has heard a little of from other travellers. About 70 years ago, the dwarves and gnomes of the Lortmils joined up with their elven and human allies to drive out their humanoid enemies from their underground tunnels, causing hordes of orcs and goblinoids to flee to Pomarj, the orcish kingdom. This has resulted in strife and slavery ever since, but peace for the more well-aligned races in the Lortmils. It was some time ago now, and very few of the human and elvish civilisations would consider this a bad thing, but many sympathisers considered it cruel or hateful...and it does seem strange that these people are marked with flame and fear-enforced discipline. It seems kind of...drow-like.

"I have served Lareth for...some time. Since he was a youth. His talent is astounding. That is all you need to know, little knight."

He laughingly sneers a little seeing now that the particularly short Gallant is actually a halfling. An unusual calling indeed for such a...homely race.

With his words, a wooden door swings open somewhere ahead of you, and slow footsteps start to clang metallically on the stone-plated floor.

Grumble looks on in trepidation. It seems like we've really stepped into the dragon's lair this time...
Dec 29, 2015 4:44 pm
Matthias takes a calming breath before facing the direction of the footsteps.
Dec 30, 2015 6:12 pm
Anrin also turns towards the sound of the approaching footsteps, and attunes himself to the wisdom of his goddess in this dark place.

Using Divine Sight, both to sense if the person coming is celestial, fiend or undead, and also to sense if this place has been consecrated or desecrated, and if possible to what type of power.
Dec 31, 2015 6:01 pm
Anrin's Divine Sense gives him a bad feeling. Nothing here has been obviously desecrated, but something is wrong.

A door down the corridor behind the commander slams open, and you hear the clank of metal boots and the tapping of a staff. The Lieutenant emerges and stands to the side, peering at the group with evil eyeballs.

Behind him emerges Lareth, tapping an ornate staff which is decorated with two golden hooks. He also has a mace chained to his belt, and wears gleaming plate armour.

Lareth is a moderately short man, but his beautiful long hair, flawless skin and chiselled jaw are quite a sight to behold.

"So, you have come to join the cause? To quench the folly of man and restore the elemental powers to their true position in the natural order? Why, what a crowd. I suppose we had better begin with your initiation then."

He smiles with glee and eyes up each of you one by one, pacing a little to allow the sound of his armour to echo through the room and passageway.

The clinking of mail sounds awfully like chains to Kaxaon. He feels his bile rising but he sublimates his anger. He hardly has strength to stand, let alone fight.
