Micah is likely a long distance; light ranged weapons are usually short. You can certainly take a shot, but there may be a penalty to hit.
Edit: The Strange RPG pg. 111, shooting a short range weapon at long range would be a one step increase in difficulty.

Micah turns back towards the melee after Katyu runs back past him. He lines up a shot at the last Karum and squeezes the trigger.
Edit: Woo! Nice roll. Spent 2 Speed points to apply 1 level of Effort to damage. I have Edge 1 on Speed.

Katyuska runs into combat and flashes a blade about, but it is from behind her that Micah levels his pistol, and Bam! Head shot! The Karum agent collapses to the ground. (4/12 remaining before: 6 damage = 2 damage, plus 3 damage for the effort, plus 3 for the 19 ends his glory, less 2 armor.)
Combat is over. May I suggest some Recovery rolls might be in order?

Micah walks out of the hallway, his pistol holstered, rotating the shoulder that took the axe blow.
"Look at that! That jerk didn't get me nearly as bad as I thought!" He smiles at the others while showing the small scratch the axe left.
Sobering, he walks up to Vinny. "Hey, man, what was that? You could have gotten us all killed, storming in like that."

Heat Slugthrower. (Attachment Item, level 5.) A small, shiny ring which speaks in an unknown language. When attached to a ranged weapon and activated, shoots a slug at medium range on a single target, causing 5 points of fire damage.
Friction-Reducing Gel. (Worn Item, Level 6.) A tiny, heavy, pulsating necklace. When worn and activated, makes a small area extremely slippery, augmenting the difficulty of movement tasks by 1 step for five days.
Cold Field Emitted. (Placed Item, Level 4.) A large, light metal pyramid with legs. When aimed and fired, covers a zone at long range on a large area, causing 4 points of cold damage. The effect lasts for ten minutes and affects anything passing through it.

Duke busies himself while people work out their personal issues and makes his comment in turn. Finding or pulling off various things from the downed combatants he stands and looks at the others and see Vinnies eyes glazing over looking at one of the devices. He scans the items briefly and cocks his head to the side muttering as he reads the analysis partially of each. He slaps it in his hand, "Now don't mess up with this. If you do and we survive Imma take one of these here other cyphers and shove it up your keister so far you won't be able to tell if you're spit fire, snowballs, or KY till it's too late." he explains. "Aim, Point, Shoot, Targeting is medium range, small impact area, it'll stun what's there for an hour."

While the rules do not specifically say one way or the other, my ruling is that you use the Effort for damage regardless if the attack is successful.load next
