Balak

See above for description of the bakery.

Arriving after Dazzle left, Mangobarl gives Balak the same rumours. He adds, after trading the Zhent signal: "There is another Zhentarim here; he left a few minutes ago. I've been given orders to try and recruit a team to figure out what is going on in Dessarin Valley. If there is a new power rising, we need to be on the right side of that. Go find Dazzle, and team up. You may need to team up with even more people to be safe, given the amount of criminals around. Don't be against using adventurers or other mercenaries to help you gather the info we want."

Dazzle

This wooden building grew haphazardly for many years, shooting out single-story wings and annexes untidily in all directions. The interior looks like a barn or attic, with exposed beams and posts. Pens with live chickens fill most of the odd corners and halls of the building, leaving only a narrow aisle down to the back, where the Mhandyvvers live. Their rooms are separated from the chicken pens by a workroom with cutting benches and a central hearth.

Mhandyvver’s is the less impressive of the two local poulterers, but is a favorite with Red Larchers. Kindly old Minthra "Minny" Mhandyvver (female Tethyrian human) and her three grown children sell chickens live or roasted and preserved in oil, pickled chicken livers, and eggs both fresh and pickled.

After Dazzle's introduction and query, Minny tells him that her adventurous young granddaughter Pell had a frightening encounter with a "ghost" near a long-forgotten tomb a short distance outside of town. Minny has ordered the girl to stay away, but she wonders what Pell saw, and she thinks that someone ought to "make sure it’s safe." The directions Pell provides when asked lead to the "Haunted Tomb" which match Mangobarl's. They cannot tell you anything about the contents of the tomb, as Pell did not enter it.

Thank you, kind sir! Balak rushes out of the bakery and catches up with Dazzle.

When he finds him, he says, How's about...*pant...pant...*I just...*pant...pant...*follow you?*pant...pant...*I will...*pant...pant...*be your...*pant...pant...*muscle!

I exit and make my way to the Allfaiths Shrine.
Feb 6, 2018 8:35 pm
As he gets his breath, he tells Dazzle, let's get me a shield.
Feb 6, 2018 9:17 pm
Dazzle listened attentively to Minny’s account, and placed a hand on his chest as he made his promise. Rest assured, my esteemed poulterer, that this matter will be swiftly and brutally resolved, so you can put the child’s mind at ease. As he left, he hesitated at the door, turning around to say, And, I must add, it smells fantastic in here. You’ve truly done wonders with the space. I look forward to seeing you again.

Feeling quite accomplished with his efforts this morning, Dazzle started making his way back to the Swinging Sword for lunch. He turned around when he heard Balak approaching and waited patiently for him to catch his breath. Well of course! If you’re going to be standing between me and goblins, ghosts, or whatever else wants to eat my organs, and to be clear, your primary responsibility will be to stand between me and certain death, then you had better be equipped with the best weapons and armour money can buy!

I believe I spied the Tantur Smithy in that direction, though the Ironhead Arms down that way sounds quite promising. I’d be happy to bargain on your behalf for a good deal, seeing as our actions will have a tangible beneficial impact on the inhabitants of this village. Where do you want to start the bidding war?

Doesn't much matter to me. I just need a frisbee to throw smash goblins with and stuff. Have I mentioned to you how much I hate goblins? They sacked my beautiful home, you know? It all began many, many years ago. I was a young lad then, chiseling away at stone, building up a great kingdom for my kinsfolk. My, it was quite the sight! We stayed there for a few years, enjoying the little piece of heaven we built in the dark, warm dampness of the caves.

But we were thrust out of our beloved home by a wicked alliance of goblins, orcs, wargs, ogres, I'm not sure all that were involved. But needless to say, we were but a few 1,000 dwarven men, women, and children against a militaristic hoard. We were not prepared. I got out with my life and the life of my dear late mother, Moradin bless her sweet soul. 30 years later, and I came upon a map of this new, lost dwarven kingdom. It is supposed to be of pristine workmanship. I intend to find it, cleanse it of the filth that may now dwell therein, and bring my kin into its walls.

Balak drones on and on and on...

Uh huh, yup. Fascinating! You don’t say. You don’t say! Dazzle quickly loses interest in Balak’s ravings, but makes suitable listening noises at appropriate intervals in order to feign paying close attention.

Listen, he says abruptly. If I’m being honest, your perspective on these matters is unlike anything I’ve ever heard before in all my long years of travel. You would be doing the world a huge disservice if you didn’t capture your genius in a written medium that will long outlive our brief lives. You really should start working on a memoir, and I mean immediately, so that none of your wisdom is lost to the ravages of time.

Dazzle breathes a huge sigh of relief as the pair finally arrives at Ironhead Arms. Now! Why don’t you go ahead and pick out the most sturdy, throwable shield they have available?

"Sorgrimm, did you see what that fellow did before? That was amazing! Now that is a man who appreciates beauty in all its forms!"
Feb 7, 2018 4:06 pm
Sorgrimm plants his face into his palm. Helm Bless me. Xella deary we have much important business, try to get your head out of the clouds. And be sure to inquire with Imdarr about your quarry.

Balak walks into the shop. Hi Shopkeep! I'm looking for a good shield today. What do you have available here?
Feb 7, 2018 6:27 pm
Balak (and Dazzle)

Feng Ironhead is a friendly half-orc. He is proud of his weapons and armor, some of which is used but repaired gear. He explains each item and for some of the pieces, has clearly put far too much time into making them the best they can be than he can reasonably expect to sell them for.

As such, you can get a quality piece for 10% less than full price (i.e. as per the PHB). Some sort of negotiation would be required to get a better deal.
Feb 7, 2018 6:37 pm
"Unlike you, Sorgrimm, I can appreciate all that is good in this world while also staying on task. We must do well to remember what it is we fight for, friend, or we get pulled into the darkness ourselves." Xella gives Imdarr a status update on their pursuit of Bastian Thermandar. "Any word on whether he passed through here recently? Our trail has grown cold. Perhaps he has somehow been tipped off to our pursuit and has gone into hiding."
Feb 7, 2018 6:39 pm
Balak talks with Dazzle (whispered tones): You see this round shield here? The one with the metal slots on the inside of the shield? I could use those to stash my javelins to make them easier to carry around and draw in a pinch. I'll take this one. Can you help me haggle?
Feb 7, 2018 7:03 pm
Dazzle pats Balak on the shoulder reassuringly, then looks at his glove with distaste and wipes it off on the side of his cloak. He then takes a deep breath, stretches out his arms, and cracks his neck, before confidently striding forward to approach the half-orc. Ironhead, is it? That must come in handy!

Listen, he leaned closer so that he could speak to Feng without anyone else overhearing, especially Balak. My friend Balak here doesn’t know it, but he isn’t long for this world. The auguries say he only has a week left, and when I heard the news, I couldn’t help but offer to volunteer to make sure he gets the most out of his final days. I’ve brought him out to Red Larch to make sure he gets a chance to earn the glorious end he truly deserves.

He wrapped an arm around Feng, guiding him away from making eye contact with Balak. Now we’ve heard that Mangobarl has seen goblins lurking in the hills, and no one wants that, right? I mean think of little Pell, you know Minny's grandkid, getting dragged off and thrown into a stew. Just think about that for a moment. Don’t you want us to make your town safer? And give this poor, daft dwarf a final moment of dignity he can carry with him into the world beyond?

All we need is that shield over there, the one you’ve engraved those lovely designs into, languishing on display. Just looking at that shield, I can tell you designed it with a single purpose: to smash the skulls of goblins. We are here to finally realize that shield’s true potential. What do you say? Will you let us take your creation out into the world, and achieve what it was truly meant for? We won’t need it for more than a few days, and once Balak here is dead, I’ll bring it right back.

Xella and Sorgrimm

Imdarr scratched his chin for a moment, thinking. "I think I know who you're talking about. Fire genasi? Maybe a wizard? I heard someone like that was skulking around the Valley, but I don't think he came to Red Larch. If I hear more, Ill be sure to let you know."

Walter, minding his own business, heads down to the end of The Long Road, and visits Vallivoe's Sundries on the edge of town. He peruses the wares for a few moments and then looks to the worker, Hoy there, friend. Would the proprietor of this fine establishment be available for a small palaver? Mister or misses Endrith Vallivoe? We have a mutual friend, Walter finishes with a wink and continues to look around.

Walter

Aside from the bewildering profusion of doors, barrels, rotting old furniture, and tools leaning against its outside walls, this building looks like a private home.

A small, faded sign on the front door reads "Vallivoe’s Sundries." Rooms are crammed to the rafters with new wares and used items of all sorts.

Endrith Vallivoe (male Tethyrian human) is a retired caravan merchant who sells new and used goods: furniture, lamps, carpets, mirrors, weapons, shields, helms, and a little bit of everything else. Almost anything might be available to buy here, buried under heaps of other stuff, and Vallivoe carries a good running inventory in his head. He’s the only vendor in town selling blank books and parchment.

Once Walter has passes the code sign, Endrith acknowledges himself as a Harper.

What about the prophet? Do you recall anything about him? Or this trouble over at Lance Rock?
