Chapter 1 - Red Larch

Feb 3, 2018 1:50 am
The adventure begins in the Dessarin Valley, a lightly settled region of caravan towns, isolated homesteads, and uninhabited wilderness just a week’s journey from Waterdeep. Nothing of note to the wider world has happened here for hundreds of years. The frontier long ago receded farther northward, leaving behind a quiet backwater littered with ruins. These days, the Dessarin Valley has little in common with the popular conception of the Savage Frontier. Winters are hard here, but the hordes of orcs and other hungry monsters are a long way off from these parts.

If the Dessarin Valley isn’t quite as wild and lawless as it once was, it’s still lightly settled territory that serves as a route to distant lands. Residents in places such as Red Larch or Triboar boast that their humble settlements are "the Gateway to the North." Through these lands pass hundreds of caravans and keelboats each year, linking the great ports of Waterdeep and Neverwinter with places such as Everlund, Mirabar, or Silverymoon. The steady caravan traffic breathes life into the towns of this area, supporting businesses in the settlements along the Long Road. Inns cater to travelers anxious to sleep safely within sturdy walls and enjoy good food by a warm fire instead of camping by the side of the road.

In addition to catering to caravans and travelers heading to or from the far North, the Dessarin Valley is a breadbasket for the hungry populations of Waterdeep and Neverwinter. The farms and pastures of the area produce grain, livestock, poultry, apples, and hops, then ship them downriver (or drive them down the Long Road) to the coast. Few people become rich from farming, but farmers in the region do well for themselves provided the weather cooperates. (That’s one reason why the unusual weather lately has been a concern.)

Swinging Sword. The inn is a three-story stone structure, crowned by a steep slate roof that bristles with many chimneys. A signboard juts out over the door, hanging from chains. It’s a ten-foot-long carved wooden scimitar emblazoned with the inn’s name in red paint on both sides. An inn yard with stables and outbuildings lies behind the building. The Swinging Sword is welcoming and luxurious by the area’s rustic standards. Each room boasts a hearth, warm draperies and tapestries, and running water (provided by rooftop cisterns). Now run by the Irkell family from Waterdeep, the inn has become a popular stopover for wayfarers in the Dessarin Valley. The topmost guest floor is given over to dormitories where travelers can "sleep cheap" in rooms shared with up to six guests, but the lower floors are divided into pleasant suites of guest rooms, each with its own garderobe. There’s also a dining room on the ground floor. The Sword has one recurring problem: kitchen fires. The one-story kitchen annex at the back of the inn, currently out of commission, was initially built with poorly drawing chimneys. Right now, cooking is rudimentary and done out in the yard, on grills flanking the bread ovens. The dining room is mainly used for drinking, with "the Helm" (the tavern across the road) currently providing the best meals in town travelers can easily buy. While the Helm at Highsun is the place to hear Red Larchers unwind, the Swinging Sword is the polite social hub and neutral meeting ground of Red Larch.

The proprietor of the Swinging Sword is Kaylessa Irkell (female Illuskan human). She is the fortyish matriarch of her family and a pleasant, sturdy woman. She is increasingly worried about "what’s gathering in the dark" in Red Larch and brings up her concerns with any likely adventurer looking types who stop by. Kaylessa’s staff are uniformly attentive and good at their work, including: Ghileeda (female Tethyrian human), a maid, and the one-eyed stablemaster Iraun Thelder (male Tethyrian human), a onetime mercenary warrior.
You've each arrived for reasons of your own, and find yourselves all patrons of the Swinging Sword inn. It is breakfast time and Kaylessa has apologetically made bread, butter, apple honey, and tea available, along with a tray of relatively fresh fruit. A few of the other patrons, mostly merchants heading empty to the farmlands from Waterdeep, are engaged in some Waterdhavian gossip of no interest to anyone. The six of you find yourselves sitting at the large table in the center, perhaps wondering if you should sneak over to the Helm for more substantial fare, regardless of the more pleasant environment here.
Feb 3, 2018 2:06 am
I sit in one of the chairs, using my cantrip dancing lights, making a single light appear and disappear in my left hand as I eat bread with my other hand. My eyes dart between all the non-Zhents.
Feb 3, 2018 3:37 am
I come down for breakfast at the earliest point they begin serving. As soon as the food is plated and handed to me I pull my holy symbol from under my shirt and begin prayer. As I do this the plate of food begins to be Emit a radiance. [Ritually cast purify food and drink]. Once my prayers are complete and I feel as if I have given Helm the thanks he deserves then I begin eating as I wait for my Gnome partner to wake and join me.

I look around with a suspicious eye upon anyone that is down in the common area. Wondering to myself I hope Xella is right and we are looking in the right spot. After the vision I had the other night I fear we may not have much time chasing this "fugitive" of hers.
Feb 3, 2018 4:12 am
"Sorgrimm! There you are!" Xella smiles and heads over to him, carrying a bowl with several pieces of fruit in it as well as a cup of tea. "Did you see the sunrise this morning? The reds and golds against the crystal sky were just breathtaking. It brought tears to my eyes. If only I could have captured that moment in song." She takes out her symbol of Lliira from around her neck out of habit and kisses it before tucking it back under her armor.

Looking around at the other occupants of the table, she gives them a cheery "Good day to you all!"

Rolling his eyes Do leave the strangers be Xella,we have talked about this. We cannot trust strangers so you shouldn’t be so damned chipper towards them. Especially at such an early hour. Helm bless us, we will never find our person of interest if everyone from here Waterdeep is talking about the "world’s friendliest Gnome".

Sorftimm respected Xella greatly, though you wouldn’ Guess it from the way he spoke to her. Then again he seemed to speak to everyone in a similar tone. The Order has teamed them up for this mission and he trusted the Order with almost as much faith as he did in The Vigilant One himself.

Xella, we need to find our target quickly. I’m very concerned about the vision Helm sent me the other night and we need to get word back to the Order as soon as we can. They will want to know what I’ve "seen" about the prophet Ernrayle Sorgrimm looks around quickly to make sure there aren’t any prying eyes or ears nearby.

"There's nothing wrong with being friendly. Everyone's a friend until they prove otherwise. As for our target, I agree. The quicker we can find him, the better. Care for an apple?" She waves it a few inches in front of his face as he glances about the room.

Sometimes, Xella wondered why she joined the Order. The pursuit of justice is a worthy one, of course, but is it her only goal? Maybe not. The question then becomes, what is it she ultimately wants? What is it that Lliira wants of her? She learned that fateful day she was paired with this fellow. Suddenly, it all made sense. She was meant to bring joy and light to this here dwarf. If she could bestow this gift upon him, she could bring it to anyone!
Feb 3, 2018 6:22 am
Anyone not busy can hear Balak talking about masonry in a gruff, but friendly tone. Showing his book of sketches, Balak talks to the unfortunate soul sitting next to him: And this? THIS is the fine work of the ancient Ironeater dwarves. You can tell because of the elven influence in the stonework, as well as the elven-looking runes in the inscription below. Beautiful work! He takes a large swig from his mug, and when he finishes, he looks at the seat next to him and found it empty. I guess he wasn't so interested.
Feb 3, 2018 12:46 pm
Bleeraugrh. Can there please be less shouting and more whispering? The hoarse request comes from the human pressing his face into the table with his hands wrapped around his head as though trying to shield himself from a volley of arrows. He had been the first one at the table for breakfast this morning, and there could be little doubt that was the case simply because he had been sleeping there.

He peels his scruffy face off the table and squints through the daylight streaming in through the open windows. Dazzle manages to remain quite charmingly attractive despite his eyes bloodshot with exhaustion and the drool smeared across the side of his face. He pulls one of his sleeves across his mouth and flashes everyone at the table a winning smile.

I need, he thinks for a moment before concluding, a drink. There is no question that he is still drunk from last night’s festivities.

Kaylessa, love of my life, star in my sky, he calls out across the dining room. Do you have any mulled wine, mead, or cider? I’ll have one of each, if you would be so kind.

He tries to fix his gaze at each of Xella, Sorgrimm, and Balak, but his eyes won’t seem to focus. We have important work to do, the lot of us. Best to start the day on the right foot.

The innkeeper brings over the requested drinks, along with a trencher of bread. "Ye be paying double rent if I haf a lick o sense; one for yer room, ain one for yer chair." She playfully flicks Dazzle with an apron string. "I ken ye to be a minstrel. Yet ye not being your wee harp to the evening do. Wha' manner a man are ye, then?"

She winks at the others as she teases Dazzle.
Feb 4, 2018 12:39 pm
Balak chuckles, trying to play off like he got the joking, but he really didn't understand how that teasing was so funny.
Feb 5, 2018 3:15 am
At the innkeeper’s joke, Dazzle laughed with melodic peels that brightened the room. I’ll never understand why they call Waterdeep the City of Splendors when that title rightly belongs to Red Larch, blessed to have you, my dearest Kaylessa.

Seeing that Balak hadn't a clue what was going on, Dazzle leaned towards him and lowered his voice conspiratorially. For now, leave the public relations to me. However, if you want an apprenticeship in the interpersonal arts, you’ll find my rates quite reasonable.

He turned back to Kaylessa, speaking loud enough to include everyone at the table, and indeed the dining room, in the conversation. As for the lack of harp, you should know that I am well trained in a wide variety of forms of entertainment. He winked at her, both playful and flirtatious. Do let me know if you are interested in a private performance.

Now, Dazzle waited for Kaylessa to leave before addressing his fellows. He seemed to be much more alert once he’s had a chance to quench his thirst. Xella, Sorgrimm, what’s this talk of "targets" and "persons of interest"? We had better figure out PRECISELY where to start applying our various talents before the whole day is wasted.
Feb 5, 2018 4:35 am
Oh do keep your voice down will ya. I just wish to eat my breakfast without all yer yellin. The dwarf sneers at the human and takes a bite of his biscuit. And uh donta recall addressin’ you in ma conversation. so please do mind your own business thank you
Feb 5, 2018 4:41 am
Dazzle took the insult in stride, never dropping his pleasant demeanor. Just to be clear, we don't have our own business, not while we're working together. We need to share information with each other, all the information we have, otherwise we're going to get ourselves killed.

So? Are you willing to work as a team? What do you need from me to prove that I'm on your side?
Feb 5, 2018 1:05 pm
"Don’t mind him. We have our personal business as you do yours. That won’t affect any shared business, so don’t you worry! Now, did you say something about entertainment? I could use a good song if you’ve got one!"
Feb 5, 2018 3:06 pm
Dazzle clutched his chest, his face grimacing and wracked with pain, as though he had just been struck with an arrow through the heart. Do I know any good songs? Me? The one and only Dazzle? Your implications are too terrible for me to comprehend, and I shall not further wound my intellect in attempting to do so.

But I will set your troubled heart at ease, for my knowledge of verse and prose spans nations and peoples far and wide. However, if what you seek is true diversion, then why not engage the most compelling of your senses? Let me show you what I mean.

With a grand flourish, Dazzle stood and waved his hands over the table. From underneath the plates and bowls emerged a swarm of multicoloured butterflies, their wings a spectrum of hues, catching the daylight through their delicate wings. A number of them alighted on Xella’s hand and arm, allowing her to witness their beauty up close.
Feb 5, 2018 5:08 pm
Balak says, excuse me, folks!, and then walks up to the bar, takes a seat, and says, ale please. What'll that cost me?
Feb 5, 2018 7:23 pm
Walter's writes in his book, as he has been since he arrived in the dining area. He feigns interest if someone says something to him, but it's not very convincing. Finally he looks up, a little surprised to see so many people at his table, Gods damn Walter, you need to pay more attention.

Kaylessa, dear. Have you any idea who goes by the name Windharrow? No wait.... He looks back down to his book, Yeah, that's it! Have you heard that name before? He takes a drink of his now cold tea.
Feb 6, 2018 1:03 am
The innkeeper looks at the breakfast buffet, such as it is, then at the dwarf. There is a long moment, before she sighs, and says, "We hae two ales of note for ye, Ser Balak. There be a wretched drink of bitter notes tha many an elf has sent back, fer 5 coppers a mug. I dinnae if it is proper Dwarven ale, but your folk seem to prefer it. There also be a finer brew, more suited to above ground palates for 8 coppers."

She gives Balak time to make his choicw, then answers Walter: "Now what would a fine lad such as ye be wantin' with such a scoundrel. He came in here, such as that one," she chin points at Dazzle, "saying he be a fine one with a flute. What a racket! I had me husband shoo him away like a drunk goat!" She laughs at the memory.
Feb 6, 2018 1:24 am
She suddenly grows still, her brow furrowing. She addresses you all, loud anough that each of you can hear.

Kaylessa tells you of recent disturbances near Red Larch. She’s heard many tales about fogs that persist in the Sumber Hills even in bright sunlight, and sudden gusts of hot wind sweeping west out of the hills where breezes have always been cold. There have been more violent sights, too, such as sudden bolts of lightning stabbing up from the hills into a clear sky.

"Fell magic," Kaylessa terms it, though she admits this was an opinion shared with her, and she’s seen none of this herself.

Kaylessa has also noticed some Red Larchers looking both frightened and furtive, and tersely turning aside
innocent queries.

Kaylessa has a theory about the source of Red Larch’s recent troubles: it’s all related to an evil presence at Lance Rock. She says neither the constable nor the town elders have helped her, so she offers the characters 50 gp to investigate Lance Rock and make sure no sinister forces are lurking there.
Feb 6, 2018 1:31 am
Well, at least we know why we were sent here finally. Sorgrimm says with a tone of annoyance. Then turns to Xella and speaks so that only she should here "I’m sure the Order has pointed us in the right direction to help these people out AND find our prey. Even if it is with this lot. He gestures his head in the direction of the others.
Feb 6, 2018 1:46 am
My ears perk up at the words fell magic. Yes, this is what I need. Fell magic. I raise my hand. If one wanted to find out more about this fell magic? You know, how to stop it or something.
Feb 6, 2018 2:48 am
"I'm afraid I know little. That description was passed to me third hand."
Feb 6, 2018 2:54 am
Walter jots down the information he was given in regard to his inquiry and then looks up, Fell magic? That's like.....hmm. Well yes, maybe I can find a lead on this Windharrow. Yes, I will help you, he says to no one in particular and finishes writing in his book.
Feb 6, 2018 3:06 am
Lance Rock then? Fine, but before we depart I need to see a guy about a thing. I suggest you all get your affairs in order should so not be able to bring you all home safely. The grumpy dwarf rises from the table, apparently finished with his meal. Shall we meet back here in an hour? Xella? Do you wish to accompany me or shall I pay our friend a visit alone?

Kaylessa seems relieved that hardened adbenturers are going to look into this problem. You are on no set schedule, so if you would like to talk to that guy about that thing (i.e., your faction contacts), wink wink nudge nudge say no more, that's a really good idea.
Feb 6, 2018 2:01 pm
Balak just wants to keep drinking and chatting with people. I’m thinking he will lose track of time and one of the other people in the party is going to have to remember to get him when it’s time to go.
Feb 6, 2018 2:39 pm
Walter says without looking up, I hope you don't mind if I tag along, uh....Srogrimm, was it? Anyway, I would be interested in helping complete this task, if you don't mind. When he does look up, he turns to Kaylessa, Would 6ou happen to know where the fellow in inquired about previously could have gone?

Moved almost to tears at Kaylessa’s recounting of the evils that have besieged the countryside, Dazzle offers a heartfelt vow to the innkeeper, loud enough for everyone to hear. I would travel into the depths of the Underdark and back for you, Kaylessa. I would strangle gods and endure dwarven opera. This quest you have given us is the very least we can do to show our appreciation for your fine hospitality and finer company.

He turns to address his fellows at the table. Now! We’ll be needing some snacks for our journey. I’m heading to the bakery for some scones. Would anyone like me to pick up something for them? My treat!

Dazzle then makes his way down the street to Lorren's Bakery and breezes in through the front door, using his hands to waft great drafts of air towards his nose while inhaling deeply with appreciation. He looks around for the most likely person to match Mangobarl Lorren’s description and confronts them. Are you Mangobarl? THE Mangobarl, Of Legend? Tales of your baking prowess have reached my ears as far away as Waterdeep, where they speak of you with profound envy and begrudging admiration, using their tears to salt their bread. I’ll have one of everything you have to offer, and if the cost must be that all other baked goods are henceforth ruined for me forever in comparison, then so be it!

Dazzle

This aromatic, tidy building’s ovens and mixing bowls are in use day and night. The bakery has a hanging sign consisting of a carved and painted wooden round loaf the size of a small cart.

The bakery always has fresh round loaves and buns for sale. Its specialty is cheese-topped buns with melted mushroom cheese from outlying local farms.

The thin, energetic proprietor, Mangobarl Lorren (male Chondathan human), thrives on gossip and can spin many wild tales.

While enthusiastically filling Dazzles order, Mangobarl heard about Pell Mhandyvver’s scare at the Haunted Tomb (see map) and went to look for himself. He saw a goblin near the spot, and figured that a gang of the creatures had moved in and rigged a "haunt" to scare off intruders. He tells Dazzle that it might be worthwhile to talk to Minthra Mhandyvver (Mhandyvver's Poultry)—treasure could be hidden in the tomb, and it shouldn’t be left to a band of goblins.

(Cost for purchase, call it 19 cp, for 3 different loaves of bread (2cp each), and 4 different savory and sweet buns (4 cp each).)
Feb 6, 2018 4:44 pm
Sorgrimm, Xella, and Walter - Sorgrimm has indicated that he is going to visit his friend, and asked Xella to accompany him, and Walter has asked to join them. Are all three going?
Feb 6, 2018 5:04 pm
Dazzle soaked up the gossip from Mangobarl like a sponge, handing him two silver coins in exchange for the sack of snacks. A goblin infestation, you say? Hidden treasure, you say? I will be investigating the matter thoroughly, you can be sure of that! Myself and my entourage are currently lodging at the Swinging Sword, so please leave me a note if you hear anything else that may be of interest.

Between mouthfuls of mushroom cheese buns, Dazzle tried to pry a little more information from the baker. And, if I might say, the folk of this town seem a little tense. Do you think they lack for diversion? Perhaps a talented entertainer from Waterdeep could lift their spirits with a grand performance, for a very reasonable price, including prix fixe catering from the finest local merchants and artisans?

He then sauntered over to Mhandyvver's Poultry and inquired within for one Minthra Mhandyvver. I was told by our mutual friend Mangobarl, who has an exceptional taste for given names, I might add, about a hidden tomb nearby that has been overrun with goblins. Do you have any additional details that would increase the probability of myself and my underlings returning with all of our organs intact? I would be very happy to provide you with a generous finder’s fee if your information can be put to good use.
Feb 6, 2018 5:21 pm
Walter nods as he jots down more notes after Kaylessa finishes speaking, Nay, dear lady. Nothing so personal. Just seeking him out for buisness. He closes his book and gently places it into his pack. He stands, pushes his chair back under the table, and quietly exits the inn.
OOC:
Sorgrimm said meet back here so I won't be going with him to run whatever errand he is on with Xella. I'll peruse around town but with no specific intent.
Feb 6, 2018 5:32 pm
Sorgrimm and Xella

On the west side of the Long Road, just south of the inn’s stable yard, stands what looks like a grand stone mansion. Two wide wooden doors painted with the symbols of many gods stand open day and night. Inside is a plain chapel with a stone altar.

The Allfaiths Shrine is a wayside shrine used by many faiths and owned by none. Priests shuttle out from Waterdeep in pairs for month-long stays. Each pairing includes priests of two different faiths arranged by
Waterdhavian temples. The most frequent combinations are Sune and Selune, Tymora and Lathander, and Tempus and Oghma. The visiting priests dwell in two simple stone rooms at the back of the temple. They bring their own vestments and holy items and take them away again when their duties end.

Right now, Imdarr Relvaunder (male Damaran human), a follower of Tempus, and Lymmura Auldarhk (female Tethyrian human), a devotee of Sune, are serving at the shrine. Imdarr is a stern man who is keenly interested in news and rumors and visitors. He’s also an ally of the Order of the Gauntlet, occasionally passing messages and sending reports on local events to the order.

Lymmura is a sympathetic ear and guide to all. She has been coming to the shrine for decades, has officiated at the marriages of many couples, and is widely loved and trusted in Red Larch.

Imdarr, when he has a private ear, tells you both that the Order is especially concerned with Dessarin Valley recently. Many more folk come into the area than current numbers can account, and they feel that it bears checking out. Crime is also on the rise, and he suggests that they investigate and ally themselflves with companions or retainers suitable to protect themselves from banditry

Sorgrimm tells Imdarr of his recent vision concerning the prophet Marlos Urnrayle. He asks him to send word back to the Order and also asks him for any further advice related to his vision as well as if he had any information that might pertain to Lance Rock and the mission at hand. After recieving his council Sorgrimm thanks him and says he will return with his findings from Lance Rock and makes a prayer to Helm at the altar before departing.

Alyx

This three-story, dilapidated boarding house has many balconies and outside staircases. Inside, the place is a warren of narrow, creaky-floored passages that snake around small rooms made of flimsy partition walls. However, the atmosphere is cheerful, if generally noisy.

The boarding house is the home of its owner and proprietor, the rail-thin, pipe-smoking "Mother" Yalantha Dreen (female Tethyrian human). Mother Yalantha lives in a cramped ground-floor room at the very back, and most of the other twenty rooms are occupied by transient laborers.

However, there seem to be four or five rooms currently available. If Alyx converses with the tenants, all of the residents have seen (or claim to have seen, at any rate) "brigands" lurking around Red Larch at night, not to mention monsters ranging from snake headed rats to ghostly dragons that faded away when approached.

See above for description of the bakery.

Arriving after Dazzle left, Mangobarl gives Balak the same rumours. He adds, after trading the Zhent signal: "There is another Zhentarim here; he left a few minutes ago. I've been given orders to try and recruit a team to figure out what is going on in Dessarin Valley. If there is a new power rising, we need to be on the right side of that. Go find Dazzle, and team up. You may need to team up with even more people to be safe, given the amount of criminals around. Don't be against using adventurers or other mercenaries to help you gather the info we want."

Dazzle

This wooden building grew haphazardly for many years, shooting out single-story wings and annexes untidily in all directions. The interior looks like a barn or attic, with exposed beams and posts. Pens with live chickens fill most of the odd corners and halls of the building, leaving only a narrow aisle down to the back, where the Mhandyvvers live. Their rooms are separated from the chicken pens by a workroom with cutting benches and a central hearth.

Mhandyvver’s is the less impressive of the two local poulterers, but is a favorite with Red Larchers. Kindly old Minthra "Minny" Mhandyvver (female Tethyrian human) and her three grown children sell chickens live or roasted and preserved in oil, pickled chicken livers, and eggs both fresh and pickled.

After Dazzle's introduction and query, Minny tells him that her adventurous young granddaughter Pell had a frightening encounter with a "ghost" near a long-forgotten tomb a short distance outside of town. Minny has ordered the girl to stay away, but she wonders what Pell saw, and she thinks that someone ought to "make sure it’s safe." The directions Pell provides when asked lead to the "Haunted Tomb" which match Mangobarl's. They cannot tell you anything about the contents of the tomb, as Pell did not enter it.

Dazzle listened attentively to Minny’s account, and placed a hand on his chest as he made his promise. Rest assured, my esteemed poulterer, that this matter will be swiftly and brutally resolved, so you can put the child’s mind at ease. As he left, he hesitated at the door, turning around to say, And, I must add, it smells fantastic in here. You’ve truly done wonders with the space. I look forward to seeing you again.

Feeling quite accomplished with his efforts this morning, Dazzle started making his way back to the Swinging Sword for lunch. He turned around when he heard Balak approaching and waited patiently for him to catch his breath. Well of course! If you’re going to be standing between me and goblins, ghosts, or whatever else wants to eat my organs, and to be clear, your primary responsibility will be to stand between me and certain death, then you had better be equipped with the best weapons and armour money can buy!

I believe I spied the Tantur Smithy in that direction, though the Ironhead Arms down that way sounds quite promising. I’d be happy to bargain on your behalf for a good deal, seeing as our actions will have a tangible beneficial impact on the inhabitants of this village. Where do you want to start the bidding war?

Doesn't much matter to me. I just need a frisbee to throw smash goblins with and stuff. Have I mentioned to you how much I hate goblins? They sacked my beautiful home, you know? It all began many, many years ago. I was a young lad then, chiseling away at stone, building up a great kingdom for my kinsfolk. My, it was quite the sight! We stayed there for a few years, enjoying the little piece of heaven we built in the dark, warm dampness of the caves.

But we were thrust out of our beloved home by a wicked alliance of goblins, orcs, wargs, ogres, I'm not sure all that were involved. But needless to say, we were but a few 1,000 dwarven men, women, and children against a militaristic hoard. We were not prepared. I got out with my life and the life of my dear late mother, Moradin bless her sweet soul. 30 years later, and I came upon a map of this new, lost dwarven kingdom. It is supposed to be of pristine workmanship. I intend to find it, cleanse it of the filth that may now dwell therein, and bring my kin into its walls.

Balak drones on and on and on...
Feb 7, 2018 2:58 pm
Uh huh, yup. Fascinating! You don’t say. You don’t say! Dazzle quickly loses interest in Balak’s ravings, but makes suitable listening noises at appropriate intervals in order to feign paying close attention.

Listen, he says abruptly. If I’m being honest, your perspective on these matters is unlike anything I’ve ever heard before in all my long years of travel. You would be doing the world a huge disservice if you didn’t capture your genius in a written medium that will long outlive our brief lives. You really should start working on a memoir, and I mean immediately, so that none of your wisdom is lost to the ravages of time.

Dazzle breathes a huge sigh of relief as the pair finally arrives at Ironhead Arms. Now! Why don’t you go ahead and pick out the most sturdy, throwable shield they have available?

Sorgrimm plants his face into his palm. Helm Bless me. Xella deary we have much important business, try to get your head out of the clouds. And be sure to inquire with Imdarr about your quarry.
Feb 7, 2018 4:32 pm
Balak walks into the shop. Hi Shopkeep! I'm looking for a good shield today. What do you have available here?
Feb 7, 2018 6:27 pm
Balak (and Dazzle)

Feng Ironhead is a friendly half-orc. He is proud of his weapons and armor, some of which is used but repaired gear. He explains each item and for some of the pieces, has clearly put far too much time into making them the best they can be than he can reasonably expect to sell them for.

As such, you can get a quality piece for 10% less than full price (i.e. as per the PHB). Some sort of negotiation would be required to get a better deal.
Feb 7, 2018 6:37 pm
"Unlike you, Sorgrimm, I can appreciate all that is good in this world while also staying on task. We must do well to remember what it is we fight for, friend, or we get pulled into the darkness ourselves." Xella gives Imdarr a status update on their pursuit of Bastian Thermandar. "Any word on whether he passed through here recently? Our trail has grown cold. Perhaps he has somehow been tipped off to our pursuit and has gone into hiding."
Feb 7, 2018 6:39 pm
Balak talks with Dazzle (whispered tones): You see this round shield here? The one with the metal slots on the inside of the shield? I could use those to stash my javelins to make them easier to carry around and draw in a pinch. I'll take this one. Can you help me haggle?
Feb 7, 2018 7:03 pm
Dazzle pats Balak on the shoulder reassuringly, then looks at his glove with distaste and wipes it off on the side of his cloak. He then takes a deep breath, stretches out his arms, and cracks his neck, before confidently striding forward to approach the half-orc. Ironhead, is it? That must come in handy!

Listen, he leaned closer so that he could speak to Feng without anyone else overhearing, especially Balak. My friend Balak here doesn’t know it, but he isn’t long for this world. The auguries say he only has a week left, and when I heard the news, I couldn’t help but offer to volunteer to make sure he gets the most out of his final days. I’ve brought him out to Red Larch to make sure he gets a chance to earn the glorious end he truly deserves.

He wrapped an arm around Feng, guiding him away from making eye contact with Balak. Now we’ve heard that Mangobarl has seen goblins lurking in the hills, and no one wants that, right? I mean think of little Pell, you know Minny's grandkid, getting dragged off and thrown into a stew. Just think about that for a moment. Don’t you want us to make your town safer? And give this poor, daft dwarf a final moment of dignity he can carry with him into the world beyond?

All we need is that shield over there, the one you’ve engraved those lovely designs into, languishing on display. Just looking at that shield, I can tell you designed it with a single purpose: to smash the skulls of goblins. We are here to finally realize that shield’s true potential. What do you say? Will you let us take your creation out into the world, and achieve what it was truly meant for? We won’t need it for more than a few days, and once Balak here is dead, I’ll bring it right back.

Xella and Sorgrimm

Imdarr scratched his chin for a moment, thinking. "I think I know who you're talking about. Fire genasi? Maybe a wizard? I heard someone like that was skulking around the Valley, but I don't think he came to Red Larch. If I hear more, Ill be sure to let you know."
Feb 7, 2018 7:26 pm
Walter, minding his own business, heads down to the end of The Long Road, and visits Vallivoe's Sundries on the edge of town. He peruses the wares for a few moments and then looks to the worker, Hoy there, friend. Would the proprietor of this fine establishment be available for a small palaver? Mister or misses Endrith Vallivoe? We have a mutual friend, Walter finishes with a wink and continues to look around.
Feb 7, 2018 7:54 pm
Walter

Aside from the bewildering profusion of doors, barrels, rotting old furniture, and tools leaning against its outside walls, this building looks like a private home.

A small, faded sign on the front door reads "Vallivoe’s Sundries." Rooms are crammed to the rafters with new wares and used items of all sorts.

Endrith Vallivoe (male Tethyrian human) is a retired caravan merchant who sells new and used goods: furniture, lamps, carpets, mirrors, weapons, shields, helms, and a little bit of everything else. Almost anything might be available to buy here, buried under heaps of other stuff, and Vallivoe carries a good running inventory in his head. He’s the only vendor in town selling blank books and parchment.

Once Walter has passes the code sign, Endrith acknowledges himself as a Harper.

Feb 7, 2018 8:04 pm
Greetings, brother! I have been sent to the area on a mission to find someone going by the name of Windharrow. Kaylessa at the Swinging Sword told me she believed he came through this town. Have you and work on this person? Or someone named Aerisi Kalinoth? Windharrow would be a minstrel of sorts, if our intel is accurate. As he speaks, Walter pulls out his book and sets it down on the floor where he sits next to it, ready to record any information the man may have.

Feng seems move to orcish tears (I.e., berzerker rage) by the glory of goblin skull smashing, but less concerned with Pell's fate, though perchance it is the overwhelming rage.

He agrees to 25% off regular prices.
Feb 7, 2018 9:09 pm
Sorgrimm

He is unable to provide any information about Lance Rock other than an odd local legend that maybe a dragon dropped it on a rival eons ago.

As to the Medusa (it was a vision, Sorgrimm would know this much) named Marlos, he knows nothing.
Feb 7, 2018 9:14 pm
Grumbles to himself, What good is it to the Order to be stationed out in the field if you cant keep yourself abreast of the surrounding region.

Looking back to Imdarr, Sorgrimm smiles and politely says:

Master Imdarr, I thank you for your service to the Order and for your time. I look forward to meeting again.

Sorgrimm turns, rolls his eyes and walks out in a bit of a huff on his way back to the tavern to meet the others. Whether Xella follows at this time is of little matter to Sorgrimm as this encounter has put him in a foul mood.

He is unable to tell you anything specific other than what you learned from the innkeeper. You get the impression that his contacts have not assumed that they left the valley, but where they disappeared to is a mystery.

Feng holds forth a rounded shield with a solid bronze knob in the center. He demonstrates the strength of the the forearm strap and handgrip. Small ties adorn the inside just behind the straps, where light javelins can be quick tied individually.

"This shield I took on trade from a northman. He found a magical shield and was still loathe to part with his friend who had so long protected him. Seven gold, 4 silver."

Slightly amused, Kaylessa brings Walter a mug of apple cider. She plops down in an opposite chair. "Whatcha reading?"

Feng snarls and snatches the shield back. He pets it lightly, saying, "There, there, poor dear. Someone will see your worth." He shoes you out of his store if you are not seriously interested in his quality wares.

"For four gold, you can have this one. I haven't started fixing it yet." He holds up a small shield with a huge chip out of it. It does not hold javelins. You are not certain how many more blows it will take before utterly collapsing.

Dazzle has to rend his baleful glare from the back of Balak’s head, but he manages to fix a pleasant smile on Feng.

As it happens, I can scrape together another three gold pieces, if that’s what it will take. You’ll remember, Feng, that I explained in exacting detail that only the best will do for my dear friend here.

Lymmura tells you, in great detail, the romantic weddings that she has officiated over in the past decades, as she has been coming here for a long time. Dazzle downs a couple of drinks for lunch before offering his perspective. Well there’s a Haunted Tomb southeast of here. It’s either infested by goblins, haunted by ghosts, or overrun by the ghosts of goblins. The townsfolk were quite unhelpfully vague on the specifics.

Northwest of Red Larch, Lance Rock is visible for miles.

Lance Rock is a narrow, twenty-five-foot menhir of bare, gray rock that juts eastward at a sixty-degree angle. The menhir is gray granite, unlike the surrounding limestone. A few hundred feet south of the stone is a ravine choked with brush. A trail leads into the brush near a neatly-painted sign that reads, in Common:

Come no closer
lest you catch
the disfiguring plague
that afflicts me!
The Lord of Lance Rock

The trail continues down to a cave mouth. Another warning sign with the same message is posted by the opening.

A round, high-ceilinged cave opens here. It has two narrow exits, one leading north and the other south. A flat boulder sits in the center of the cave. It’s about six feet across, eight feet long, and three feet high. Dark stains color its top.

The warhammer drives the zombie down, and it doesnt get back up. A firebolt from Alyx insures the matter.

With the pressure off, you can see that the zombies were perched on a ledge above the tunnel (out of sight of/total cover from Xella's Divine Sense), where their ambush took place.

The cave chamber has two narrow exits, one leading north and the other south. A flat boulder sits in the center of the cave. It’s about six feet across, eight feet long, and three feet high. Dark stains color its top.

Balak determines that the flat boulder is a natural part of the cave, a harder stone that the cave was carved around. The top shows signs that the boulder has been repurposed as a sacrificial altar. Walter joins him and points out, within the darkest part of the stains, tiny chip marks made from blades or axes.

If anyone else would like to roll for a short rest, go ahead now.

After a meal and some down time, Xella and Sorgrimm have partially recovered and you're ready to proceed. While you hear no noise from the tunnel to the right, you do hear the occasional brush of noise (light scraping or shuffling) from the left one.

Which way do you go?
Feb 20, 2018 2:37 pm
Sounds like there may be more of the undead in that direction. Sorgrimm indicates the left tunnel. We came here to clear the cavern so we should probably head in that direction first. Take out known problems at least. We can always double back to fully explore the cavern. Someone with good eyes should take the lead...make sure we don't trigger anymore traps.

Brave and noble Balak, know that we are here to support you no matter what challenges you may face. Feb 20, 2018 9:08 pm
The narrow passage is about ten feet high in most places, with rough, irregular walls. Protruding spurs on the walls are coated in dried blood.

Eventually this natural passage widens out:
The star-shaped cavern ahead has many clefts in its walls. Only two, across the cavern, seem large enough to traverse. Three zombies lurch about the area. One is costumed like a bear, another is dressed as a lady in a frilly dress and thick makeup, and the last is costumed as a jester with jingling bells on its collar and sleeves.

They do not immediately react to Balak, though whether they have seen him or not isn't clear.
Feb 20, 2018 9:16 pm
Lovely, Dazzle mutters at the macabre spectacle.

He turns to Alyx. So, uh, necromancer? Time to, y'know, necromance? He gestures vaguely in the direction of the shuffling zombies, hoping Alyx will somehow make them go away.

@Skeeze Dude! Absolutely life come first. I'm sorry for your loss.
The zombies, who had been inching close, are not caught unaware by Balak's charge. They all start smacking away as he drives in, warhammer crashing down...

Zombie attack 1 - (1d20+3, 1d6+1)

1d20+3 : (20) + 3 = 23

The first zombie critical hits him, as the barbarian does the same back. (13 damage to Balak, but it takes 18)

Xella, Alyx, and Walter are up.
Feb 22, 2018 5:13 am
Shield up, Xella follows Balak towards the zombies, flanking the one that seemed to do the most damage to him and taking a swing with her longsword. "HYAAAA!"

Alyx is up, then at the top of the round Dazzle and Sorgrimm, then the zombies.

To the south then? Let’s meet these bastards head on. Looking for similar opinion or argument to go north.
Feb 23, 2018 3:42 pm
Any direction is fine with me. I just want to finish this. I say, seemingly uninterested.
Feb 23, 2018 4:33 pm
Then let's be off! Balak, grasping his warhammer and shield, begins walking in the direction indicated by Xella.
Feb 23, 2018 4:45 pm
The passage loops around in a right hand turn. The passage then opens into an enormous cavern illuminated by several guttering torches set in sconces on the walls. The floor is uneven, and the ceiling is forty feet up. Three flat boulders near the passage serve as tables for human corpses. Severed body parts sit in baskets by the corpses, covered in dry gore. A figure in a dark hood stands by the third table, its back to you. Matted hair juts from the hood, and the figure holds a bone needle threaded with dark cord in its hand.

Farther to the west, a stone stair climbs the north wall, ending near the ceiling. A stone slab like a counter juts from the wall across the room from the base of the stairs. It holds saws, knives, and other tools. Four skeletons stand beyond this tool bench, guarding a wide passage that exits the to the west.
Feb 23, 2018 5:47 pm
Balak looks back at his companions and says in a whisper, I'm not much for a stealthy entrance, but it may serve us in this case.
Thoughts on how to deal with this?
Feb 23, 2018 6:44 pm
Dazzle keeps his voice quiet so as not to attract any attention. I could try talking to the hooded figure, at the very least create a distraction?
Feb 23, 2018 7:30 pm
Seems as good a plan as any...I'll stay back ready to act.
Feb 23, 2018 7:55 pm
I'll walk with you, Silvertongue.
Feb 23, 2018 9:18 pm
Good day to you! Dazzle called out amicably, strolling into the cavern as though he was entering any shop in Waterdeep. My stout friend here and I are looking to rent, lease, or purchase a number of animated corpses. I've choreographed a contemporary interpretive dance piece the likes of which Red Larch has never seen!

He ventured another step forward, doing his best to draw attention away from a stealthy approach by the rest of the group. Would you be willing to show us your wares? Only the best will do, and from what I can see your goods are of exceptional quality!

The four skeletons move forward a step, and the figure at the table turns, revealing itself to clearly be a zombie.

As he speaks, Dazzle gestures broadly with him arms, his voice rising and falling with dramatic effect, painting his scene with vivid detail.

Well there are a number of logistical concerns that we'll need to work through. But, let's talk big picture. Imagine thousands of people gathered from all over the Dessarin Valley, waiting with breathless anticipation for a spectacle that, they have been told, will transcend their wildest dreams. The illusory curtain lifts, and upon the stage are arrayed a dozen of your finest creations. We'll ensure that artisan craftsfolk are brought in to dress the actors with costumes that will transport the audience into the story, and we'll import the finest makeup from across the realms to give our performers an otherworldly appearance that simply cannot be matched by the living. Disciple of Life Notes
Also starting at 1st level, your healing spells are more effective. Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2+the spells level.

How about we live to fight another day? Dazzle shouts as the necromancer takes down Balak and yet more undead pour forth from the cavern. Better part of valour and all that. We'll deal with him later. For now: run!

Dazzle is not the first to leave the cavern, however. He will provide whatever cover and assistance necessary, using his rapier to fend off zombies, in order to ensure every one of his companions is able to flee.

Stairs. The steps along the north wall lead up to a ledge overlooking this room. A peephole by this ledge looks into the western passage of area L4, and there is a lever here that controls the rockfall trap in that room.

Tools. The stone counter serves as a tool bench. The tools here include saws, knives, awls, embalming tools, and metal bowls. Among them is a jug of grain alcohol and a cask of fresh water. Everything is very clean.

Mar 14, 2018 10:26 am
OOC:
death rule is if Damage meets or exceeds the max hp of the target. If you had 9 max hp with 1 left and took 10 Damage then you die. 9 then you are unconscious. Dm’s Choice to apply that to npcs or not.

OOC:
So, this guy’s melon is splattered, but something unearthly is keeping him alive.
Mar 14, 2018 1:55 pm
OOC:
His melon isn't splattered. You would need two attacks at 0 hp to do him in, forcing 3+ death check fails. Balak only attacked him the once (and in the odd application of the RAW, did no actual damage - he was already at 0), and meanwhile he accumulated 3 death check successes, plus Sorgrimm stabilized him. He's a mess, just not dead.

OOC:
I'm not sure...and I missed the post above mine about the skeletons up ahead...so not sure what we want to do..we seem pretty beat up already.
Mar 14, 2018 2:44 pm
Here's what we do. Back away slowly from the gore everywhere, and camp just outside the cave entrance so that these skeletons don't roam the countryside, eating farmers or whatever. Then when we're feeling good and rested, we come back inside and search every square inch of this place for stuff we can sell back in town. Who's with me?
Mar 14, 2018 2:52 pm
I search the area for the spell book.

Mar 14, 2018 3:25 pm
That's... that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me. Dazzle wipes a tear from his eye.

He then gives the dwarf a big hug. You want to take first watch with me?
Mar 14, 2018 3:36 pm
Let go of me you buffoon! Sorgrimm mumbles unintelligibly under his breath as he shakes loose from Dazzle's grip.
Mar 14, 2018 3:39 pm
I am surprised you want to keep this arse alive. But, I will defer to your judgment. Balak grabs his items, fits them in their appropriate holstering places, and then inspects the area.

Mar 14, 2018 6:37 pm
Alyx searches the area, but presumably not leaving the south portion of the cavern that you're in. He finds many interesting necromantic tools (see Tools above) and reagents, but no spell book, nor anything of notable value.

Are the bulk of you then going to take a short rest (a couple of you have used this already today), or a long rest, or a short rest followed by a long rest?
Mar 14, 2018 6:44 pm
I take the reagents, as well as the alcohol and water.
Mar 14, 2018 8:03 pm
OOC:
Seems like it's up to Sorgrimm how long we rest.

Naturax says:
OOC:
What do you mean about "used [a short rest] already today"? Can't you short rest as many times per day as you like?
OOC:
The operative part of a short rest is the ability to spend hit dice to recover hit points. As level 1 characters, you only have 1 hit dice. So if you have taken a short rest, and spent your hit die to recover hit points then subsequent short rests provide no benefit until after a long rest. A long rest allows you to recover all of your hit points, and half (but at least one) of your spend hit dice.
Mar 14, 2018 8:33 pm
I'm partial to Dazzle's plan, despite the hug, of camping for the night. Then exploring the remainder of the cave in the morning.
I am pretty tired and out of healing spells.
Mar 15, 2018 3:21 am
One uninterupted long rest later, uninterupted save for Dazzle's entertainment, of course...

You recover all of your hit points, any spent hit dice, and replenish your spell slots.

There are three areas to investigate:
1) the north tunnel from the prior cave,
2) the northeast tunnel from the current cavern, and
3) the stairs up in the middle of the current cavern.
Mar 15, 2018 7:11 am
Balak stretches, invigorated by the rest. He grabs his gear, and he says to the group: we should investigate the sections of the canner we were in yesterday before we move on to new places in these caves. Thoughts?
Mar 15, 2018 2:41 pm
I'm fine wherever. But we need to fine the spellbook from the wizard. If we have any hope of ending these skeletons, that is what we need. I say, reading my own.
Mar 15, 2018 3:35 pm
OOC:
I should also ask, what are you doing with the unconscious necromancer. He doesn't benefit from the long rest as he was at 0 hps, so let's assume he's still unconscious.
Mar 15, 2018 3:52 pm
Let's wake up the necromancer. I'd like to have some words.
Mar 15, 2018 4:17 pm
Okay, but maybe we should break his hands first, so that he can't weave no magic around. Anyone object? Balak says as he runs his fingers along the handle of his warhammer.
Mar 15, 2018 5:25 pm
Hey now, we aren't monsters. Let's just tie him up. I have some experience.
Mar 15, 2018 5:59 pm
Balak sighs. Fine, Silvertongue. We'll do it your way. But mark my words: if he tries any funny business, I won't stand between you and his danger.
Mar 15, 2018 6:34 pm
Look, that's the first thing we'll explain to him. Let's just do it right now!

Dazzle takes his time to thoroughly bind the necromancer with rope, then pours some water on his face to rouse him.

Not sure if you slept through what my good dwarven friend here was saying, but just in case: if you try to escape or cast a spell or anything at all, really, he'll crush your skull with his hammer.
Mar 15, 2018 6:52 pm
The necromancer groans, the water pooling in his blood-caked mouth. Indeed, most of his head is caked in blood, and he can only manage one eye to open.

"I'm the Lord of Lance Rock!" he roars. (Okay, roar is probably too strong - how about angrily croaks?) "I see no dwarfs!"
Mar 15, 2018 7:21 pm
Dazzle beams at their captive. Okay Alyx, he's all yours.

Mar 16, 2018 4:13 pm
The necromancer's ego assuaged, he will share his story:

He was cruel almost from the time he could talk, catching small creatures and killing them in hideously inventive ways to savor the power of life and death. He grew to be an embarrassment to his well-off family, who paid a tutor to channel his undeniable intelligence and curiosity into more positive outlets. They didn’t know they had apprenticed the young Oreioth to a necromancer in need of an assistant for his researches.

When Oreioth’s master decided he had no more use for his apprentice, he sent Oreioth off to make his own way in the world. Oreioth worked his way northward, robbing graves and using his magic to intimidate or rob anyone weaker than him. Driven out of one decent town after another, he finally sought refuge in an old outlaw’s lair he discovered near Lance Rock. There he commenced his newest round of experiments, avoiding all other living souls.

Oreioth barely recognizes his own name anymore, and he harbors dreams of founding a kingdom of undead servitors with himself on the throne.

What few social graces Oreioth once possessed are fading rapidly. He has become a megalomaniac, styling himself the Lord of Lance Rock and surrounding himself with zombies and skeletons compelled to heed his every whim.
Mar 16, 2018 5:10 pm
Balak walks up to Sorgrimm and whispers, Now can I kill 'im?
Mar 16, 2018 5:28 pm
Murder, my friend, is not on today's docket. If need be I am willing to stand guard of our "Lord" until the cave can be cleared. We can then take him back to Red Larch. I try to speak in a hushed tone so that the necromancer cannot hear us.
Mar 16, 2018 5:47 pm
There are three unexplored areas (I previously said two; I forgot an earlier one).

There was a tunnel off the second room (L2), a tunnel north from L4, and the tunnel northwest of the current room, L5. Which do you explore, presumably with Sorgrimm dragging along the necromancer and hanging back?
Mar 16, 2018 5:57 pm
Can Balak climb the steps on the north wall of L5?
Mar 16, 2018 6:02 pm
Climbing the steps, he finds a lever and a peephole that seems to operate a rockfall in a cavern that contains a couple of chests. It seems likely that this cavern is the one to the north of the mummer zombies, and that cavern only appears to have an exit to the south.
Mar 16, 2018 6:45 pm

Correct, except for the devious rock fall trap controlled by the lever before him.
Mar 16, 2018 7:10 pm
Balak walks down the steps, walks up to Dazzle and asks Would you accompany me? I think I found something useful, but I need your magic expertise.

He walks up to Xella and Alyx:Keep an eye out. There is a lever with a large trap that will kill Dazzle and I should someone trigger it. Make sure no one triggers it.

He walks out to L4, and heads into the tunnel unexplored.
Mar 16, 2018 7:46 pm
Balak and Dazzle visit the death trap room with the chests, turns out to be just a trap (that doesn't go off unless Alyx or Xella choose otherwise, heh). After a careful examination, when the two iron chests are opened, they are empty, and there is nothing else of interest in the cavern.
Mar 16, 2018 8:03 pm
Balak and Dazzle return to the main cavern with the group.

I think we should head to the other end of this cavern next.
Mar 16, 2018 8:12 pm
Sounds great, Balak! Please, lead the way.
Mar 16, 2018 8:26 pm
Balak sheaths his warhammer, trading it for his javelin. They head to the west side of L5.
Mar 16, 2018 8:29 pm
The workshop narrows into another passage that splits and links up twice. It gently descends to this area described as follows:

An oval cavern opens here, forty feet wide and sixty feet long. Dark purple tapestries hang on the walls. At the center stands a pedestal fashioned of severed arms arranged to clutch one another in a cone. Cradled in the uppermost hands is a glowing crystal sphere. A dark sigil with an eyelike slit floats above the sphere.

There is the glowing sphere. Behind the draperies are niches where Oreioth keeps his food, drink, supplies, clothes, and bedding, as well as 165 sp, 78 gp and four polished jet gems (50 gp each). A wand of magic missiles is stored in a niche. Oh, and some book; looks personal, kinda mystical.

Alyx can tell right away that it is a spellbook. Deciphering the necromancer's personal code will take careful study. Until then, the exact contents of the book are unclear.

Since Dazzle failed to roll the one skill check that would be applicable (just kidding), he is unfamiliar with the sigil. However, as he gets close and examines it, it disappears from above the crystal sphere.

Sorgrimm is likely alone with the semi-conscious necromancer.
Mar 18, 2018 6:24 pm

Mar 20, 2018 1:36 am
The only unexplored space is the right leading tunnel off the second chamber. This leads to a cavern with no exits.

Motionless humanoid figures dressed in dirty clothes or scraps of armor are propped against the walls of this cave. Some are little more than skeletons with wisps of hair and skin stretched tightly over their bones. Others are fresher. A few old shortswords lie on the dusty floor.

Unfortunate, perhaps someone back in town will be of more use. Sorgrimm makes the comment without even realizing how insulting it sounds.
Mar 29, 2018 6:25 pm
Sounds good. I'll take the garbage. Balak slings his warhammer on his back, then grabs the necromancer by the collar again and drags him out of the caves in the direction of town.
Mar 30, 2018 2:23 am
The journey back to town takes longer than the journey out, owing to your unenthusiastic guest, and you arrive past time for the evening meal. The necromancer is haggard and prone to fainting, given his grevous injuries. Carrying him leaves you sweaty and dirty by the time you return to Red Larch.

Where do you take him? To The Swinging Sword (it was Kaylessa that hired you to investigate) or elsewhere?
Mar 30, 2018 2:55 am
Balak keeps dragging the necromancer to the inn where they met Kaylessa. If someone doesn't convince him otherwise, he drags the man right through the entrance and yells, Here's yer disturbance. Meet the Lord of Lance Rock! Balak will then throw the man onto an empty table.

Kaylessa gasps, and the rest of the inn patrons stand up. Angry and shocked voices question Balak's entrance.

"Tell us what happened! Who is this? Lord of Lance Rock?"
Mar 30, 2018 3:52 am
He caused the disturbances. His name is Oreioth.

Balak draws in closer to Kaylessa and whispers softly, He was the necromancer causing the zombies and skeletons in those caves. It seems that the source may be larger than him, though. I saw some mysterious sigil in that cave. This guy is looney tunes, though.
Mar 30, 2018 1:40 pm
I believe he has been driven mad but some external force. I do not believe this is the man's natural state. Perhaps a town cleric might be able to restore him to his faculties.

She glances over the varied members of the group that barged in and tries to do her best to hear what the big man was whispering. Her slightly pointed ears twitch with the effort, as her deep brown eyes scan the room.

All I know is that there were some zombies that resembled adventurers. Many skeletons, but a few more freshly dead. My friends are right, though. It seems larger than just at Lance Rock. Sir Silvertongue he points to Dazzle and I saw this driftglobe with some eye sigil nearby it.

Familiar with arcane sources eh? Well, what do you say friendly little power stream? Do we know something of arcane sources? Let's see what we can find out. Felicia thinks to herself as she stands up from the table and sashays her way through the tables. Approaching the bar with her glass in hand, she sets it down gently, flashing a smile.

Don't mean to interrupt loves, but my glass is in desperate need of recharging. Kaylessa darling, could I bother you to top me up? she says to the proprietor before turning to the group members. Certainly an interesting way to make an entrance, yeah? What'd the old dwarf do to earn a nap on the table?
Apr 1, 2018 6:32 pm
Dazzle noticed Felicia as soon as they returned to the tavern, and when she started her inquiries he didn't miss a beat in responding to her. I'm always fond of a memorable entrance. Oreioth here is no doubt behind a number of local disappearances, creating his own little undead army to join him in the worship of some strange eye... thing.

I don't suppose, he continued while flashing a charming smile, you have any pertinant information you could share with us, in return for me being so forthcoming?
Apr 3, 2018 5:01 pm
Well that would depend on your definition of pertinent, now wouldn't it? You look like one that enjoys a delicately baked pastry, do I miss my mark? she says, stressing the baked portion of the statement. This one has to be Dazzle, judging by the baker's description. None other would carry themselves that way.
Apr 3, 2018 5:32 pm
Dazzle grinned. Surely she had heard of his encounter with the baker, and thus he concluded that she had been sent by Mangobarl to aid them.

Not in the slightest. The name's Dazzle, as I'm sure you've heard. And you are?

Kaylessa, where can I go to find an arcane expert in this town?
Apr 4, 2018 6:56 pm
Well met Xella. I truly desired more drink, but then you and your merry band showed up in such a fabulous fashion. Now I must confess myself interested. I've long desired a chance to wander and experience far more of the world than the little bit I've seen. Though if you seek an arcanist, I have some fair bit of knowledge and would gladly offer an opinion on whatever it is you seek, free of charge of course. I wouldn't assume you would part with it, so perhaps in full attendance of your - retinue - I could take a look? Felicia says, putting on a pretty smile.
Apr 4, 2018 7:22 pm
Why, that's a mighty fine offer, miss. Balak pulls out the driftglobe. Based on what I know about driftglobes, there should be a command word the activate it, and a command word to get it to drift in the air. Couple problems:
(1) When Silvertongue and I found this thing, there was some eye sigil nearby, and it disappeared when we approached.
(2) I would ask the Lord of Lance Rock over here, but I knocked some good sense out of 'im, and I doubt he will be honest if I ask 'im.

So, I need to figure out if this is different than a normal driftglobe, how it is different if it is, and what the command words are to activate this thing.

Apr 4, 2018 7:34 pm
Well, if you aren't in a rush, give me an hour or so and I should be able to suss that information out for you. Perhaps while you all enjoy a bit of repast? Surely after besting that craggy old bastard, you'd appreciate a stiff drink and a pleasant meal? she says, eyeing the driftglobe.
OOC:
Throwing an arcana check out there for grins. I figure doing the short rest to investigate the globe for the command words. Without something like Identify, I'm not sure if I'd be able to figure much else out, 'specially not any curses that may be on the thing.

Once Orieoth has been dragged away, but before everyone heads their separate ways, Dazzle tries to plan their next move. Now, as I'm sure all of you remember, and to fill in Felicia here, there’s a Haunted Tomb southeast of us. It’s either infested by goblins, haunted by ghosts, or overrun by the ghosts of goblins. The townsfolk were quite unhelpfully vague on the specifics.

Once we've all had a chance to rest and recover, I say we get back out there and help these poor, beleaguered villagers from suffering any more than they already are by having to live in this squalid backwater hovel of a town. Also, we'll probably find more treasure. Shall we leave at noon?

Balak's attack (as posted earlier) strikes the ghost. However, the creature's ephemeral nature reduces the strike (half damage due to resistance against bludgeoning).

Having heard the sounds of combat breaking out inside the cave, Dazzle peeks his head inside the darkness and takes in the unfolding scene.

I've never heard of this "Hendel Forgen" - he must have been quite forgennable!

But actually Dazzle wracks his brain for anything he might have heard about "Hendel Forgen".

The ghost guard takes the hit but reacts indifferently (resistance to slashing so half damage).

It continues to yell at Balak with all the fervor of a malevolent spirit, while attempting to slay him to death.

Balak feels his life force seep into the sword.

Alyx strikes the creature soundly, although the ghost is resistant to lightning attacks, it is becoming substantially less substantial.

Apr 19, 2018 7:47 pm
"Yes, well done everyone, except for me of course. Can't seem to hit the side of barn right now." Sorgrimm is very distraught over his ineffectiveness in battle.
Apr 19, 2018 8:02 pm
Feeling her compatriot’s frustration, Xella goes to cheer him up. "I’ve seen what you’re capable of. You’re just having an off day. Take a moment- breathe, pray, that’ll charge you right up."

Sorgrimm grumbles something inaudible.

A brief search tells you the room you're in is empty save for the stone table that has rust stains on it. A rusty iron door is the only obvious other exit.

Shhh. He's dying. Let him have this.
Apr 24, 2018 1:16 pm
Balak pounds on the door, and rust rains down on him. After a few blows, it begins to move and opens inwardly.

Beyond the rusted door is another square room, twenty feet by twenty feet, containing a stone coffin. The ceiling is cracked, allowing roots and water into the chamber from multiple points, although little collects here. At the coffin’s feet is a rusty iron chest.
Apr 24, 2018 1:46 pm
Welp, there definitely isn't a vampire in that coffin waiting to eat us. It should be perfectly safe for you to open, Sorgrimm. Would you mind?
Apr 24, 2018 3:37 pm

Balak again finds that the coffin is probably dwarven in construction, but not by a master, simply by an ordinary craftsdwarf. He places its age at 200 to 300 years. It is as quiet as the grave inside.
Apr 24, 2018 5:12 pm
Balak! I wouldn't want to rob you of the wonder of discovering what lies inside that coffin. By all means, go right ahead!
Apr 24, 2018 5:37 pm
Nah, it's nothin' special. This dwarf was a hack. Lemme smash someone's skull, please! Would you allow me the privilege? Balak levels the head of the hammer next to Dazzle's ear, then chuckles. Just kiddin'!

If Balak hands me the rings I will take a few minutes to cast detect magic in the rings.
Apr 25, 2018 1:04 am
Balak has no reason to mistrust his dwarven brother. Okay, you can have the silver one, also. I want the one made from electrum. He pulls the rings out of his beard for Sorgrimm to observe.
Apr 25, 2018 1:24 am
Sorgrimm detects no magic, aside from Dazzle's wit.
Apr 25, 2018 1:42 am
Here you are, they don’t appear to have any magical properties. Though I think we should come to some agreement in regards to finding "loot". I am not greedy but if we are to work together as we have been then I think their should be a fair distribution of the spoils that are found. Everyone here has proven themselves valuable, except maybe this new lass. Sorgrimm hands Balak the rings back as he addresses the group. He then walks over to the coffin to investigate the armor on the skeleton while his detect magic aura remains.

OOC:
I'll start a party treasure thread. I suspect the loot from Lance Rock remains undivided as well.
Apr 25, 2018 4:54 am
Thank you, Brother. You can have the silver one if you’d like. I’d estimate them both at equal value, based on the craftsmanship on the silver one. Balak hands the silver ring to Sorgrimm. ’sides, we dwarves oughta look out fer one’nother.

Balak braids the electrum ring into his beard.

Do any o’ ya know how to imbue magic into objects?
Apr 25, 2018 4:55 am
Also, should we rest here for the night, or head back to town?
Apr 25, 2018 1:32 pm
Hey now, Sorgrimm, everyone should get their fair share. You saw the way she blasted that thing!

Dazzle sniffs the air in response to Balak's query. He stares at the dwarf, incredulous. Why would we crash here when there are comfortable beds and warm company waiting for us back in Red Larch? Your sickness must be affecting your mind. I knew it would come to this. Follow me now, Balak, and we'll get you the care you so urgently need.
Apr 25, 2018 1:50 pm
Felicia smiles a bit at Dazzle's words. I appreciate the support, and I agree with Dazzle here, resting away from where that kind of vile wretchedness resides is certainly wise. However, it's not been so long that we've been gone from town, really. Imagine the reactions that they would have to you Dazzle, if you were to come back so soon after leaving, with naught but a few rings to show for it. Perhaps we can explore slightly more, but don't open coffins that we may stumble upon? Get a feel for the rest of this place. she offers, thinking back on the little that they've done so far.
OOC:
How long has actually passed since we left town? We fought 2 rounds or so against the ghost guy, and then less than a round against the sword. Maybe 20 minutes of other searching and door opening.

The details of Hendel Forgen's romantic life have been lost to antiquity. Xella intuits that the identity of the woman in the locket would require finding someone who specializes in local history, or was alive at the time.

As you leave the cave, Balak and Dazzle leading the way and arguing more or less amicably, you are attacked. Right outside the cave, actually, by a goblin and a half-ogre laying an ambush at the entrance.

Moving things along...

Searching around the area of only briefly for the goblin, you retrieve any thrown javelins and find their camp nearby. There are simple bedrolls and a few trashy items, like a cookpot and assorted pieces of broken armor that have been half stitched into something the goblin might wear. You do find a small stash of coins (31sp total).

The to back to town is uneventful, though you are no doubt hungry by the time you return to the Swinging Sword inn. Kaylessa smiles warmly as you return and suggests baths and food. Her sons beginning filling a tub for you to take turns in. She places platters of steaming roast pork and apply jelly, with thick trenches of bread and bowls of stewed mixed vegetables at your table. She plops down a pitcher of ale and another of pale Waterdhavian wine, with goblets for you all.

"Tell me about your day! Oh, and can I get you anything else? Balak you look wretched, are you ill?"

This meal is lifting my spirits, though. I'm going to bed after this. What will a room cost me?
May 2, 2018 4:40 pm
OOC:
Alyx can certainly have burned that camp down.
Let's say rooms are 1 gp per night.
May 2, 2018 4:49 pm
Balak finishes his meal.

Kay, here's your money. He hands her 2 GP and says, keep the balance. I'm goin' ta bed!

His hammer in its sling-sheath thing on his back, the large battleaxe slung to Balak's shoulder, he heads into his room. He stashes his items in the room in a safe place, pulls out his book of sketches, then retrieves a quill and ink from one of the dresser drawers.

He sketches what his new hammer should look like, finding influence from his years of observation and study. He then lies on his bed, back against the mattress, book extended by his arms high above his face, until he falls asleep, his arms and book cascading to his chest.

May 2, 2018 7:56 pm

During the evening, Kaylessa let's you know that the Constable had indicated that he has another top for you if you want to seek him out the next morning at the butchery.

If Dazzle is up for a performance, he could make a roll.

Save for that, lets move on to the next morning.
Balak wakes refreshed and full of his usual vigour. The ghost's necrotic touch has completely with off with the rest, and his hit point maximum is restored to normal.

After a breakfast of honey cakes, porridge, and minced fruit, (meals are covered by the 1gp room charge) you make your way to Jalessa Ornra , Butcher. There, Constable Harburk gets you and thanks you for coming.

"Bandits are making sport of the south road. A bit further than I like to travel in these times, but if you clear them out, I'll clear it with the council that you can keep any of their ill-gotten gains. What say you?"

May 4, 2018 4:43 am
Brother Sorgrimm, you’ll have me hammer in this endeavor...or maybe me new battleaxe!

You see a new leather strap with the large battleaxe from the half-ogre that he recently slew. You can all tell Balak is feeling like his old self again, and he is like a kid with a new toy, as he puts his shield and his hammer in their respective holsters on his person, and he is just hefting the battleaxe around with both hands, grinning from ear to ear.

Balak leads the party merrily into a trap. However, they aren't entirely as sneaky as he was prepared for, and his ire goes up before the trap is sprung.

Balak comes upon a small clearing (15 feet across) around a cave. He sees a black bear in a cage of dubious structural integrity, and within the rustling bushes, 3 or more bandits with bows drawn. You see two on the left (ten feet apart) and one on the right. The nearest on the left and the one on the right are twenty feet away from Balak when he comes into view.

My genius is wasted on these fools, Dazzle muttered to himself as the bandit failed to comprehend the subtleties of his joke.

The bear, however, was definitely becoming a cause for concern. Dazzle made his way through the melee, carefully picking his way towards the cage. Stopping well out of reach of the bear, he tried to counteract the chaos of the battle with a soothing, sing-song tone. There there, ol' buddy. Everything's going to be fine. As soon as we brutally murder all these bandits and loot their still-warm corpses, we'll let you go back into the wild where you belong.

The bear is not handled.

That's Balak, Sorgrimm, Xella, Felicia, Dazzle, meaning Alyx is up.

I launch another firebolt at the closest bandit.

The bandit having been struck by Sorgrimm, barely avoided Felicia's attack, and epically dodged Xella, drops from Alyx's Firebolt.

The bear, far from being be-Dazzled... Continues to attack is cage.

The remaining bandit, sensing the odds are against him, turns and bolts into the woods.

You are all up. The bandit moved and Dashed and is 30' away, crashing through difficult terrain, and has half cover (+2 AC and to Dex saves)

Balak drops his battleaxe with an audible *thud*, yangs out a javelin, sticks his tongue out and bites it, squints, and chucks the javelin at the fleeing bandit.
OOC:
He is within the first range increment, so no disadvantage.

Tsk tsk. We shouldn't run away. It isn't polite. Felicia whispers into the bandit's mind as she sends another blast of eldritch energy hurtling after him.

Casting eldritch blast.

Felicia's Eldritch Blast critically kills the feeling bandit.

Dazzle and Xella are up before the bear.
May 10, 2018 3:33 am
Xella walks over towards the bear in the cage. "Alright bear, you calm yourself and we'll take care of you. Work with us, won'tcha?"

Rolls

Animal Handling - (1d20+5)

(5) + 5 = 10

OOC:
Ill forgo the damage roll since the bandit is dead,
May 10, 2018 1:23 pm
Dazzle tries to help Xella in calming down the bear. He extracts a lyre from his pouch and plays a soothing, calming lullaby. See, this is the lyre I was talking about.
OOC:
Dazzle is using the Help action on Xella's Animal Handling check.
May 10, 2018 1:46 pm
With Dazzle's aid, (granting Advantage) Xella can roll a second Animal Handling check to sooth the savage... (sorry, I won't finish that).

"Such lovely music!"

After giving the bear some bacon, Xella calms the creature down enough that she...
Qralloq sent a note to Moofsalot
May 10, 2018 10:15 pm
"I say we leave the bear some food, open the cage and back away. Seems calm enough, I wouldn’t want to kill him for no reason."
May 10, 2018 10:39 pm
Balak drops out of his rage, then goes and collects his javelin and his battleaxe, then stays away.
May 11, 2018 2:05 am
Sorgrimm inspects the bandit corpses.
May 11, 2018 1:08 pm
We should attempt to scare the bear away, never know when it will get hungry for people.
May 11, 2018 2:26 pm
Bears... don't get hungry for people. But yeah, we should gently encourage it to leave this area.
May 11, 2018 2:49 pm
After the bandit's bodies are thoroughly examined, I drag one as close to the bear as possible before it starts growling at me.
May 11, 2018 3:28 pm
Have you ever seen, or maybe heard of, a bear before, Alyx? Dazzle asks out of genuine curiosity as he observes the necromancer's antics.
May 11, 2018 3:32 pm
The bandits' corpses have crossbows, scimitars, leather armor, and a dozen bolts each.

Their hideout is a cave full of stolen food, wine, weapons, and coins. Coins in the cave total 99 cp, 74 sp, and 13 gp, divided among several coin purses. The bandits also accumulated other plunder worth 100 gp, including numerous weapons.
May 11, 2018 9:10 pm
OOC:
All right, are we ready to enact these two semi-divergent plans simultaneously? The plans are to: 1) leave the bear some food (Alyx has thoughtfully provided bloody people that tormented the bear), release it, and back away calmly; and 2) scare the bear.
May 11, 2018 10:46 pm
"We are not scaring the bear. Are you trying to get attacked?"
May 12, 2018 2:14 am
OOC:
what kinds of weapons?
"I agree with Xella, the bear is a prisoner. Let’s let it go, and just try to give it space. We can wait until we are ready to leave the area then open the cage and walk away while it eats the bodies.
May 12, 2018 2:47 am
OOC:
The weapons are simple swords, axes, spears.
As you mill about discussing matters, the bear begins to get a little agitated again.
May 12, 2018 4:52 am
Balak collects as many of the items as fit in his pack. We can definitely share these when we get back to town. I'm just going to stash these in here for now, and we can split the loot at the inn. He finds some food appropriate for a bear, opens whatever container it is found in, and uses a stick to push it towards the back of the cage, away from the door. Balak hopes to distract the bear long enough that someone can unlock the cage.
May 12, 2018 11:53 am
Taking Balaks cue, Sorgrimm moves to unlock ththe cage.
May 12, 2018 12:49 pm
The bear turns to sniff at the food, and roars at Balak. Sorgrimm is able to unlatch the cage; the bear can now just push it open.
May 12, 2018 2:48 pm
Alright, lot. Let's get out of here.

Balak backs away slowly until he is about 100 yards away from the bear, and then he gets out of sight of the bear behind a rock or something.
May 13, 2018 1:16 pm
OOC:
Assuming we gathered all gear and etc.
Sorgrimm motions to Xella that now is the time to be leaving the area and he follows the young Paladin out of here.
May 13, 2018 3:50 pm
Having gathered anything of valuable from the cave and the bandits, and with the bear pawing at the back of the cage (for the moment) trying to reach Balak's food offering, does anyone do anything else contrary to they plan of backing well off now that the cage is unlocked?
May 14, 2018 5:28 pm
Another evil successfully vanquished, Dazzle declares as he dusts off his hands.

Who's hungry for lunch? he asks rhetorically as he starts heading back towards Red Larch.
May 14, 2018 5:50 pm
I hear bear is good. I mumble.
May 14, 2018 6:22 pm
Balak ignores Alyx and walks with Dazzle towards Red Larch.
May 15, 2018 1:48 am
The bear once it pushes on the cage door which settings open, is free. It paws angrily at the corpses, mailing them, but then lumbers of into the woods away from you.

You return to Red Larch safely.
Congratulations, you have reached level 2! (Any character leveling questions or rolls should be done in the character creation thread.)
