Ybus drops his coat, draping it over Baracus' arm. He begins to unbutton his shirt, teasing the appearance of tattoos upon his chest, then places the necklace over his head and lets the amulet rest between his pectorals. That done, he starts to button his shirt while whistling a shanty.
May 21, 2018 4:00 am
When Ybus begins to disrobe, the Golden Child laughs and returns to her throne in the main hall, leaving you with Sashvar in the trophy room. The priest leads you to the library, as promised.
OOC:
You stay about an hour more on the temple grounds, during which time you become attuned to your items (except for Baracus, who is already attuned to Xiphos as he has had the sword for quite a while). Urban and Sashvar discuss religion and philosophy in the library. The priest also still wants to know where Rydler got the key. The rest of you, let me know if there's anything specific your PC wants to do during this time.

And after that, what's next?
May 21, 2018 4:51 pm
"He prob'ly got it from underneath the Putrescent Prawn," Ybus says casually to the priest's inquiry. "Them and Chawl-Mun got so many doors, they hafta mark 'em all the same."

The halfling hops up and down several times, testing the feel of the amulet. Satisifed, he hops up and down some more.

Baracus wishes to meet the warriors of Skandrana. He would spend the hour sparring with them and listening their songs, if possible. While he fights, he will ask about the enemies of the Golden Child - their fighting styles and weakness. Privately, he would take their measure of these warriors' skill and prowess, and compare them against the armies that he has served with and fought against. How do they stack up?

As for what is next, Baracus usually allows fate to operate through the decisions of his friends. If you asked him, he would be most interested in waging war against the sect that attacked the Golden Child. But, he will follow the lead of others, believing that his fate is ever guided by outside forces.
May 21, 2018 8:27 pm
Urban indulges fully in the library, fascinated by the old scrolls and books and thoughtfully considering all of Sashvar's teachings. Urban is enamored with the idea that these teachings are so very ancient. He finds that his curiosity is only expanding about this sect of Pradeshi ritual religions.

Urban approaches Barracus and fields an idea, "Maybe we should take this new gear on a foray to confront whatever faction it is that kidnapped our girl. What did you say that guy was, some sort of rat king shape-shifter? Maybe we can track down him and his ilk, knock them down a peg or two while we're here in town."

Looking around at the monks, Sashvar, and the Golden Child herself, Urban adds sincerely, "This group has been kind to us. I don't like the idea of them being under threat."

Erden thanks them profusely for the cigar, "Your kindness and hospitality cannot be overstated," he says as he is given the gift.

He spends the rest of his time trying to get as much information as possible about their self-mutilation rituals and what their purpose is. He hopes to work his way to logically accepting the fate and place of the Golden Child in this temple.

Sashvar peers at Ybus curiously. "Putrescent Prawn? I don't know where that is. Are you saying you've seen doors marked with the twin snakes? Just like the key?"
May 22, 2018 6:20 pm
Ybus takes his coat back from Baracus and begins to put it on. "Sure. It's down by the Ways-A-Way. Look for the erectile goat man."

Baracus spars and talks with Skandrana warriors and even learns one of their songs. He witnesses a wide variety of fighting styles and disciplines practiced by men, women, children, even grandmothers. This is a sight that reminds him of home. Of his father who is most certainly watching him. Baracus also befriends an old man named Gaurav, who retired from the Thousand Swords after taking an arrow in the knee and came here to became a monk. Gaurav offers his services as a guide if Baracus wishes to seek out their encampments and meet the vaunted guardians of Pradesh.

From Sashvar and some of the other monks, Erden gains a better understanding of the sect's self-mutilation rituals. Mortification of the flesh is a rite of purification. The sect places a good deal of importance in purity of the body. Hence, Skandrana warriors are celibate, and Varhu healers do not consume meat. Still, the extreme mutilations the group witnessed today are only permitted every 170 years, for 3 days after a new avatar is chosen by the god/dess.

As for the Golden Child, before she was chosen she had a normal life. Now her place is here in the temple fulfilling ceremonial duties. Varhu will vacate her body when she reaches puberty whereupon she may choose to return to her parents or stay at the temple and live out her life a monk.

After listening to your account of the fight against Sardo Numspa and his rat minions, Sashvar leans back and strokes his beard. "They stole her away two nights ago, just hours after she was chosen. A demon, you say? This is very troubling. I have no knowledge of this Sardo Numspa and what his designs might be, but we may not have seen the last of him. If you wish to seek him out, the rats might provide a clue: there once existed a rat cult in Northern Pradesh until they were outlawed and believed to have died out."

Sashvar unrolls a map before continuing, "There is a temple ruin there in the deep jungle that might provide clues, but it is a difficult journey overland through rough terrain. If you wish to investigate, I suggest you hire a boat to sail up the coast to the mouth of the Serpent River and strike inland from there."

"Perhaps it would be simpler if you just picked up the trail where you last encountered them, in this abandoned house you mentioned. Whether the house or the jungle, if you do decide to seek out this cult, I'm certain some of our Skandrana warriors would be honored to join you."

"As for Vashankala's tomb, if it has indeed been found as our halfling friend suggests, I fear what would happen if the dark power within were to fall into the wrong hands! This rat cult for instance. Thanks to you we now have two of the six keys. I wonder where the other four might be."
May 22, 2018 7:38 pm
Erden seems slightly more accepting of the strange mutilation practices now that it's all been explained. As they speak to Sashvar, Erden takes on his 'military' stance (standing up straight, hands clasped behind his back). He listens to Sashvar's instructions, carefully taking notes in his mind.

"Yes, I think that the best place to start would be the home they took her to," Erden agrees, turning to his companions to see if they have any input on the matter, "There may be additional clues to be found there."
OOC:
Question: Is my cigar permanent? Is there an action needed to activate it?

Rydler stands after thanking the Golden Child and turns to Sashvar and smiles endearingly "It was a gift—the last request of a dying man—to me, years ago. He told me I would find its purpose, when the time comes that I would know it; I believe this is that time."
May 24, 2018 6:35 am
Baracus works up a sweat, holding nothing back in his sparring to show his respect for the warriors of this temple, and in turn enjoys the challenge as the Skandrana monks reciprocate. However, he is most challenged by the grandmother, Swordmother Raghavan, whom he makes the mistake of going easy on. In the moments after his thorough thrashing, as he lies still on the ground and contemplates his own mother, who his father said he took after. At the time he had always taken that as insult, but now he wondered. He looked forward to the day he would be reunited with his father. Perhaps he would learn who she was, this human woman he took after.

He appreciates Gaurav's offer and tells him he will think on it. He had thought the little knife was home sick, but perhaps it would enjoy taking a tour of glory with Baracus before it returned it to the ranks of the Thousand Swords.

After listening to Urban and Erden discuss their next steps, Baracus is pleased with the plans of his friends. There was hope for them yet - they had not even mentioned monetary reward.

"Yes, let us rain down destruction upon the enemies of the Golden Child. I trust in the path you choose."

In response to Sashvar's offer of additional soldiers, he rejects it outright.

"Every soldier we take from here is one less guarding the Golden Child."
CancerMan says:
Ybus takes his coat back from Baracus and begins to put it on...[/b]
Baracus is puzzled. Did he have the coat the whole time? He considers that the halfling's trickery, but it is too clever by far and he gives up.

Naatkinson says:
....

"Yes, I think that the best place to start would be the home they took her to," Erden agrees, turning to his companions to see if they have any input on the matter, "There may be additional clues to be found there."
"Let us go now then," Urban says. "I'll bet they are still somewhere in the city."
May 24, 2018 1:50 pm
Sashvar accepts Rydler's explanation without question, and nods approvingly when Erden takes charge. The priest shakes his head when Baracus speaks of thinning the ranks of the temple guardians. "The Skandrana warriors I have in mind are not posted here. They have extensive knowledge of the sewers which you are about to enter. At least meet them, then you can decide whether to take them with you or not. You will find them - or rather, they will find you - as soon as you go below. Go now, and the god/dess bless you."

As you head southwest from Skandrana Varhu temple in the shadow of the Tower of the Tiger, through the Peacock Gate, skirt the Great Temple of Gajenndra, and make your way to Rat Alley, it occurs to you that you are now retracing the path Sardo Numspa took when he kidnapped the Golden Child. Sashvar said the avatar was taken in the dead of night, but it was late afternoon when you spotted the procession near the Peacock Gate. Might he have held her somewhere else before moving her again?

You find the derelict house pretty much as you left it yesterday. The northeast door hangs open, flooding the musty room in daylight. The pile of rugs sits in the corner as before. The wreckage of the gilded cage lies where Baracus tossed it atop the heap of broken furniture at the foot of the stairs. The demonic symbols on the crumbling walls leer down on the ones on the floor which are now almost completely obscured by the orcish runes Baracus scrawled there in ichor. The corpse of the scar-faced rat is nowhere to be seen.

Urban, though your heightened sensitivity to strong good and evil is fading (the Golden Child extended it by briefly opening your third eye, Sashvar explained) the demonic symbols still emanate dark auras, as does the circular grate in the middle of the floor through which the cultists fled.

What do you do?
May 24, 2018 3:17 pm
Baracus heaves the grate open, and looks and smells within. If he determines no dishonorable tricks are at hand, he will be first to descend.

"Wait, Baracus," Erden says softly, "Let's see if there's anything else up here before we head down."

Erden will call forth Timear, his owl companion, and send him upstairs to see if there's anything worth checking out. His eyes roll into the back of his head as he connects telepathically with his familiar to see through his eyes. If there is nothing worth noting up there, he will give Baracus the sign to continue down and then will follow right after.
OOC:
There is an upper level to this building, so we may want to take a peek there first

Going to be looking through the owl's eyes

Ybus learned long ago, through constant and repetitive scolding no less, to never bother Erden whenever the eyes roll back like that. Still, the halfling always fights against the sensible option.

"I will watch over him," Ybus volunteers, and proceeds to do literally that. His form shifts and blurs until he reappears unchanged except for the head of an owl (Timear, to be exact) where his halfling face used to be. His Disguise Self spell cast, he stands in front of Erden and stares at the gnome.

Ybus: One of Erden's nostrils is slightly bigger than the other. You've never noticed that before.

Erden: There doesn't appear to be anything unusual on the upper level. Looking through Timear's eyes you see more of the moldering drapes, rat droppings of the ordinary sort, a solitary cockroach.

Baracus: By what little light spills down the shaft you see a slick stone floor 10 feet below. It looks like you're going to need torches down there. The shaft is rough stone, missing the usual rungs for climbing. You hear flowing water (at least, you think it's water). The most surprising thing is the smell. Instead of the stench you would normally expect from a sewer, you smell cinnamon, caramel, fresh-baked bread. It's like you've stuck your nose into the moist center of a sticky cinnamon bun.

Urban: You still sense faint evil from the shaft. Not the presence of evil, but the trace of strong evil having passed recently. An evil breadcrumb trail.

What do you do?
May 26, 2018 3:21 pm
Urban looks down into the tunnel and calls out to Barracus, "All clear?"

Shifting so that his shield can get through, Urban follows up, "I'm coming down," and then lowers himself into the tunnel with Barracus.

Once he gets stabilized, he lights a torch. Once it is burning, he holds it high in his left hand and surveys as much as he can as the torchlight carries out into the tunnel.

"What the ...?", he looks at Barracus confused. He sniffs the air again to be sure. "Cinnamon?"
