Scene 2 - The Istanbul Auction

Mar 20, 2018 1:58 am
The aged but well maintained Dassault Falcon 50 touches down in Istanbul on schedule. The pilot taxis to a private hangar, and at their prompting, you quickly exit the plane, dumping your equipment into a waiting van before the customs officials arrive - their story is that they flew in empty, here to pick up passengers and cargo - and demand bribes and/or confiscate your finer gear. The van takes off, picking its way through a maze of hangars before making your way through Istanbul to the east.

The streets give way between wonders of antiquity and horrors of modern poverty. Sadly, it is the ladder that is your destination, and after about a half hour of harrowing near misses and almost constant blaring of vehicle horns, you arrive in Dolapdere district.

Right away you can tell that you have made some terrible decisions in this or a past life. Whatever road lead you here was full of missed opportunities. Still, even after dropping hammer on empty barrels of your side arms, the horde of Tony Robbins trained panhandlers gives you a little bit of space, enough that you can keep an eye on your loot. The press of people around you would make anyone but an Asian cringe in despair.

The van hobbles off, only through the liberal use of the horn and ramming more than a few loiterers. You make your way to your waystation, a small hotel / flophouse that undoubtedly would need to bribe a methhead to get even a 1 star rating.

Duke runs a hand through his hair and sighs sitting down. "How close are the buildings around here and when's the meetup again? If we can't move quickly through the streets neither can they having eyes up top ain't bad... granted they'd likely melt bystanders to make a path just as easily as run through them most likely."

Once told he'll excuse himself to the bathroom.

Micah looks to Katyu, an eyebrow raised. "Did you find out what time this purchase is supposed to go down? And where we go, exactly? We should probably go and scope out the place, right?" Micah is in a little over his head at this point. While he likes to boast that he lived many lives during his childhood acting career, those experiences left him sadly ill-prepared for life as an adult.

Katyushka can find some information on Syud Sail, including a blurry picture of someone affiliated with the holding company and known to lurk in the flea market maze of Dolapdere. The internet refers to the man as "Black Blaine". As she found before, the locals don't internet well, so research is likely needed to be done old-fashioned like.

Micah looks at the photos Katyu found, his lips pursed slightly in thought. "Well, he looks pleasant..."

Standing up straight, he glances at the rest of the team, "Ok, we need to go get more information, right? We just need to find someone who knows this character and I think I can get them to take us to him."

After a short pause, he asks, "That's what we want, right?"
Mar 23, 2018 9:55 am
"I cannot find anything else. If we want information, we need to hit strreets." She shuts the laptop then throws it in a satchel. "Once we find location..." She grabs her rifle. "I can cover from nearby."
Mar 23, 2018 2:09 pm
Duke comes out of the bathroom waving a lighter and sees Sokolov packing up her gear. "We taking off to find someone?"
Mar 23, 2018 7:28 pm
Yeah, this Blurry Blaine kid. Vinny points his bat at where the laptop used to be as if that's informative. We gotta go ask the locals about him.

Each of you have a photo of the Black Blaine person of interest, and a crowded third world flea market known for crime around you. How about each of you make some kind of investigation montage, doesn't have to be long, with your particular skillset. Add any roll you feel is appropriate, and feel free to create the environment. I'll use your collective efforts to advance the plot.
Mar 24, 2018 8:56 pm
Micah moves through the crowd, turning 'it' on. He smiles, chats, and starts to make friends. Many people ask him to buy things and he says he'll be back after he's had a chance to see everything, and most of the people believe him. To those people he thinks might have the right kinds of connections, he shows the photo, asking about the subject, where to find him and who surrounds him. He persuades them that he's looking to make a certain purchase, you know, that kind we can't mention, even here.
OOC:
Going to roll Intellect with my Persuade skill. I'll apply effort to it, as well, spending 2 points.

Whether it's Qatar or Queens , Vinny knows a bad element when he sees it. He wanders the streets, looking for the most likely spots that trouble might be waiting for him, and heading right for it. He can't understand a word anyone is saying but knocking someone's teeth out is a universal message.

Seth decides to go out on his own, and use his lab analysis skills in a way somewhat perpendicular to their usual purpose. He takes samples of a couple of areas in the market, figuring that the suspect will most likely have some trace of materials native to the strange, either through transference or other means. Seth usually carries some quick test strips he had concocted for just such a purpose. Once he finds something that points to the suspect being in this area, he will try to focus in and see if he can pick up traces mentally.

He ignores the vendors for the most part, despite their complaints as he swabs their stalls and wares.
OOC:
Using Lab Analysis here a litle bit, probably at an increased difficulty, but spending my 3 Int. pts, minus my edge, so 2 pts.

Rolls

Time to complete analysis (in minutes) - (2d20)

(196) = 25

Mar 29, 2018 2:18 am
Micah strolls about, engaging the vendors and riffraff, although often the two are interchangeable. He talks and they talk and he counts himself lucky that he doesn't but a used Fischer Price portable record player that might have been shot, but it was touch and go. He manages to follow half promises and see through outright lies toward the western end of the market.

Vinny adopts a more straightforward, combative approach, and picks the worst place he can go. He gets involved in a shady geese juggling ring and loses a handful of bank notes, acquires a black eye (don't ask, 1 Might damage), and wastes a bunch of time.

From high above the street, Katyushka settles into place trying to keep each of the team in sight. Micah seems to be surrounded perpetually by an angry lynching mob, but it turns out just to be regular Turks. Vinny appears to be in a bind, or having fun, is hard to tell, but Katyu doesn't feel it's necessary to interrupt the party with a high velocity shot. Still, from above, she can coordinate, following Micah's trail, helping Duke focus on the likely spots.

Seth dibs and dabs the debris, dusts the detritus, and disturbs the denizens to gain samples. Setting up his lab, he performs his analysis. Indeed, his instruments register residues of The Strange, focused on the south west side. His commentary assists the search.

Duke follows Micah, until he finds the true power of the flea market, unwashed urchins. With a pittance of cash, Katyushka's directions, and Seth's final confirmation, he finds a tiny doorway into witch he watches a wino with a €5,000 wrist watch duck inside.

Target acquired.
Mar 29, 2018 3:34 am
Micah looks around at all the new "friends" he's made, smiling ruefully at his luck as he pushes away an old walkman offered for sale. He steps out of the crowd of people up against a building's outer wall and his followers seem to realize that he is separating himself from them and they suddenly find other targets of interest.

Into his radio, Micah says, "Anyone have any luck? I... Well, I guess I kind of lost track of what I was doing." He chuckles a bit then his eyes widen as he hears about the target being found.

"On my way," he says quietly, plunging back into the fray to make his way over there.

The round strikes the building, but the noise is lost in the noise of the market. Only a few cock their heads or interrupt their barter/bullying to look about. The door he ducked through slams quickly and forcibly, so he may have felt the urge to duck and cover.
Mar 29, 2018 9:36 pm
As Micah approaches the rest of his team, he says, "Hey, Vinny, feel like busting in? I think that might be what we gotta do."
Mar 30, 2018 1:54 am
Vinny is holding a cold beer up to his eye as he walks up. Bro, they are serious about their goose juggling around here.

He lowers the beer to get a better look at the door revealing his swollen eye. Pssh, no problem, Bro. I got you. Vinny lowers his shoulder and careens into the door.

Mar 30, 2018 2:17 am
Vinny slams into the door, breaking it open and it flops on its hinges. He sees the man ducking past two bouncers (armed). Beyond them, the murmur of a gathered crowd can be heard. The bouncers seem ready for action, hands drifting to shoulder holsters, but don't immediately press the issue.
Mar 30, 2018 2:47 am
Vinny gives the bouncers a big stupid grin as he holds up his beers then points at his pants, You got a bathroom in here....BATH-Room he over enunciates the words as if that's sufficient to translate them. He continues the show as he advances on the bouncers.
Mar 30, 2018 2:59 am
Micah turns to Duke with a dumb smile on his face. "Hey, he didn't even ask us to hold his beer!" With that, he peeks around the corner to check out the situation Vinny just created. Seeing the bouncers he jerks his head back and points to the open doorway with his thumb.

"You guys better get in there. He's gonna take some heat."
Mar 30, 2018 11:47 am
"You guys? If yall ain't going in find out if there's a backdoor and radio Sokolov, lady already took a shot at him when he was going in. If he don't come out he'll go down..." Duke states moving into the building.

Duke looks from the bouncers to the Vinny and back and shakes his head, "You know round these parts they speak English just fine... well at least as good and you and me." Duke comments pulling his creditials. "Internal Bounty Hunter. My informant let me know there's a man inside there that's got a price on his head. I know yall just gotta do your job so how bout I pay a processing fee." Duke states flipping out his badge and credentials. "If you want repair money talk to him." Duke explains nodding sideways at Vinny.

OOC:
What will Katyu do if the party goes indoors?
Apr 3, 2018 3:24 pm
OOC:
We'll leave Katyushka's preparations to be mysterious.
You press through the bouncers, having only needing to show your guns to prove you are not tourists, before they let you past.

Beyond the bouncers is a small open air courtyard where refreshments and hors d'oerves have been sent aside (a cooler of cheap bottled Turkish beer and a box of Greek granola bars). A few rough characters stand about chatting quietly.

Beyond the courtyard another set of doors leads to an indoor room. You can see a few dozen folding chairs have been set up before a lectern with a paint flaked table to the side.
Apr 3, 2018 3:34 pm
Duke scans the area and looks for where he would go if he ducked into the establishment after someone took a shot at him.

"Sokolov we're inside. Status?" Duke requests before continuing to move through looking for their target and threats.
OOC:
Let me know if a roll is needed or if the background music changes.
Apr 3, 2018 3:58 pm
The only obvious place he could have gone would be through some subtle curtains at the back of the stage.

You get the obvious feel that you have stumbled upon the auction.
Apr 3, 2018 4:18 pm
"Sokolov How copy...." he stats again before swearing. Finding the others and looking around. I think we just found our world ending EBay auction... "Sokolov if you're not coming in there's a courtyard with line of sigh down." he advises and nods to the curtain when he's gathered the others before moving towards the curtains.
Apr 4, 2018 1:40 am
Vinny smiles broadly at his cleverness as he gets past the guards only to realize it was because he had gun-wielding compatriots right behind him.

Entering the courtyard, he spies the curtain and grabs a fresh beer on his way towards it. Vinny touches the curtain as though he's evaluating the thread count as he tries to nonchalantly peek behind the it.

Micah follows Duke, also picking up a beer, following Vinny's lead.

"Auction, here we come..." Micah murmurs to himself as he moves through the curtains with the rest of his crew. "I wish I had through to bring a weapon. It really came in handy in Ruk."
Apr 5, 2018 11:06 am
"You're a smart guy you'll figure something out. Worse case just pretend your an innocent bystander then take someone's gun once they're shot."
Apr 6, 2018 2:35 am
Micah stares at Duke in horror for a few seconds, then chuckles. "You really had me going there, for a second, man!" He pats Duke on back, shaking his head. "But, seriously, that's a good idea." He starts looking around, looking for people who are likely to get shot first and then tries to figure out which of them are packing.
Apr 6, 2018 3:00 am
Behind the curtain, Vinny sees a staging area for the auction. Various objects, mainly weapons, tech, and drugs, are arranged with small cards. A large man pushes a meaty hand in your face, saying something like "Fuck off" in the international language of the thug.

Micah figures everybody is packing, most with holdouts.
Apr 6, 2018 11:00 am
Vinny puts his hands up to show he is not a threat, My bad, bro. Wanted to see if that was velvet. He turns and saunters back to Duke and Micah, They're setting up the guns and stuff for the auction back there. Got at least one big dude on security. He didn't just shoot me. Probably bad to shoot customers

The storage room of the auction, where the items up for sale are held before being announced, is guard by someone. While you're not sure how tough these guard types have to be, given the possibly millions of Euros with of items back here, you're about to find out.

After backfiring Micah, the thug draws a gun (hand cannon) and says, "You're dead punk!" in a mangled accent.

Seth scans the room, looking for something that they can use to their advantage.

In the meantime, he steps forward, and puts his science kit on the counter in front of the thug with a slam, and says, "If this is how you treat all prospective customers, I do not think that your little auction will go well. As it is I see that you have nothing but baubles of mild oddness at best, so I do not see how our employer would want us to waste our time here. Our employer is very influential in these circles, so their endorsement would make or break your little cabal."

Seth says all of this with a sneer, pulling out a Fischer badge, polishing it and making sure that the thug cannot read the name of the company, only seeing the quality of the badge.

Apr 24, 2018 6:37 pm
OOC:
Sorry zatatmando, missed that detail. Now, I'm not sure how to apply Premonition here. On one hand, the description of the power refers to 'a careful observer' but the next bit is 'a random fact from a person or location that is pertinent to a topic you designate.' I think the most relevant way to incorporate the description is that: 1) you need to observe a person or location, and 2) you designate a topic and then learn a random fact about that topic and about that person or location. This topic could be smell, or intentions, or family, or something much more complex and specific. If my interpretation is acceptable, then you could not use the power to see through walls. But, there could be a window!

Seth needs to designate a topic to learn about in regards to the armed men outside.
Apr 24, 2018 6:51 pm
Duke tosses on of the items to the closest teammate opting to just say figure it out so you can use it. When that's done he'll go back to looking around for where their target may have gone. "We ain't got time ta pussy foot around, where's that slippery sucker go?"
OOC:
Could I try and track down the guy's path out of here we're looking for?

OOC:
That makes sense to me! I will redo the description a bit.

Seth looks for a window or gap in the wall that he could sneak to to find a sightline on the group of men outside. He spots an area on the wall covered with a poster, or perhaps an old street sign (his Arabic is about as rusty as this piece of metal) and pulls it away to see the area the group of men just pulled up to.

He studies the men, and tries to figure out which of them is from Ruk originally, or seems to have any bits of The Strange clinging to them. He knows that one of the artifacts that he picked up from Ruk will be more effective against someone not from the Earth recursion, and anyone from Ruk may know where their target item may be.

Seth readies his cypher, the frog-like contextualizer, and goes to look for the fat man, thinking that at the very least he may be able to incapacitate the man and get the object.

"Does anyone have eyes on the fat man with the case? He is from Ruk, and I think one of my cyphers can out him to his crew here, which may cause enough confusion to let us grab the package." Seth says into his earpiece, quietly so that other patrons may not hear him.

We're now just waiting for WarDomo who has some IRL issues to deal with, so I'll update the situation and prompt your actions shortly.
Apr 30, 2018 6:59 pm
Loose Ends and Situation Summary

After a search of the flea market, you followed a random passerby into the auction site. This person is of no obvious importance and is cavorting with the other auction attendees in the outer area. You all passed through the outer area into the auction room, and then into the store room.

In the store room, the guard there told you that you were not welcome (albeit in mock-Russian) and you responded by storming the store room and subduing the guard.

Meanwhile, Katyushka has declared war on three approaching cars in the alley. The cars' eight passengers have spilled out and are about to come through the door in the middle room, i.e., the auction room. Seth has discerned that of the cars' passengers, the Fat Man carrying a hardcase is from Ruk.

Also, it is apparent to at least one person in the party that the other (ten) auction attendees near the donut table are slapping leather - it is likely that they perceive you to be attempting to steal the auction items.

Duke is before everyone, then the Fat Man, then Seth, Micah, and Katyu.

The Fat Man rushes in, gun in hand. He is immediately struck by Duke's obscure attack. (A rolled 17 grants +1 damage, so 5 damage in total.)

The Fat Man slams backwards into the wall, the heavy case slamming to the side. He recovers quickly and fires a short burst from his automatic pistol back at Duke is stunned by the attack, losing his action this round.

Duke: Speed Defense roll, please, and the other four of you can act as mooks pile in from both the outer area and from the alleyway door.

Seth sees that above the group of attendees there are light fixtures that would work quite well to shatter and rain down unhappiness on the people gathering to confront them. He concentrates on one that seems to be closest to the center of the group, and thinks about what that fixture is made of, dissecting it in his mind until he is picturing the individual molecular bonds involved in their existence. Then, he imagines that he is pulling those bonds apart until they break with a snap.

Seth's attack causes the arc lights above the potential auction-participants. The glass and the metal of the fixture itself hurls itself in all directions, mowing down the attendees. This is no popped light bulb, but the detonation is akin to a grenade going off. They fall to the ground, moaning and clutching their hands to grevious wounds.

There are seven mooks coming in the back door from the alley. They're still up and gung ho. As is the fat man.

So whatever was in the case was returned to Ruk, it would seem. This would be something we would probably know with our strange training, so if you want me to roll, I will gladly do so.

Duke's slippery gel completely disrupts the fat man's plans. Duke gets ready to speak and stops and realize that really ain't his thing unless it's letting people know they're being detained or stating someone is impeding him doing that to someone and waves everyone over.

"I'm under the impression he's in charge or the head honcho of Karum or he's speaking for him, her, them... yall... He got our attention about Earth and his viewpoint besides the method we really don't know 'what it'll do' down the line. GM Prompt: The game has slowed a bit. Let's jump ahead a bit.

After securing the area, the fat man seems to be more interested in his life than in anything else. Opening the case for you, you do see that it is empty, with foam packing in the basic shape you were expecting.

He tells you that he is a courier, and came from an inapposite gate (also called a matter gate) to Ardeyn. They had to use matter gates because translating would alter the weapon - not having access to a matter gate directly from Ruk, they had to detour through Ardeyn.

The weapon is likely lying in the open back in Ardeyn on the otherside of that gate. The open being a tavern called the Pyramid within the Citadel Hazzurium.

He cannot take you to the gate on this side, because it has dissolved (they are temporary in nature) but he will assist you in translating there in exchange for his freedom once in Ardeyn.

I know, right? Party of me would love just to run an Ardeyn-only game. So much cool.
OOC:
I figure new thread right?

Woo! Fun times.

So are we going to do the translation in this thread then move to the new one, or how would we like to do it?

The fat man has given you some information. Assuming you all take a moment to gather yourselves and compare notes, are you going to take him up on his offer to translate?

Discuss.

OOC:
I feel like we should get there in a hurry and try and grab this thing before someone else grabs it. However, I could also use that last rest. But, 10 hours is a long time to let it lie there...
May 17, 2018 12:50 pm
OOC:
Snatch and grab then lay low? I'm under the impression we're running hot, going in blind, and likely breaking protocol.
May 17, 2018 1:50 pm
OOC:
I think we are all probably running a little low on steam, but yes a quick snatch and grab before the device walks, then maybe we stay in Ardeyn and recover. Now on to the fat man (whose name we should probably ask). Two questions:
A-why should we trust him at all?
B-If we do accept his help to translate to Ardeyn, what do we do with him after? Hope a Turask eats him? Or do we take him back to HQ with us and put him on ice?
May 18, 2018 3:18 am
OOC:
I say we let him go. We have bigger fish to fry and, we're not cops. Also, that was one of his stipulations to help us translate.
Micah sticks his hand out, "The name's Micah. What's yours?" After shaking, he glances at the rest of his crew and then asks, "So, what's in this all for you? What do you get out of your nefarious plans?"
May 18, 2018 3:29 am
The fat man is pleased to be so addressed. "Domic Salish," he replies. "I'm a courier of extraordinary rarity. I'm highly paid for my services, and for access. I'm sure that you and I could have an extraordinarily productive friendship. You want to go to Ardeyn," (pronounced Ar-dunn), "I'll take you there. Then we can talk the future, yes?"
May 18, 2018 12:18 pm
"So he's a black bagger that got caught and knows he's screwed the pooch. I think he's just looking for an exit strategy to law low and lick his wounds..." Duke comments, "To me you're on the hook till we're square Bubba, double cross is kinda what I'm expecting you to do from the get go to save your own hide." he explains bluntly with a shrug.
May 18, 2018 12:47 pm
"Why don't we get to translating, yes? This might be a little strange, but first we need to settle down a bit, and concentrate on Ardeyn. Feel it, the impossibly large Citadel Hazzurium at the top of the Path of the Dead, the seven moons, the Strange flickering on the Borderlands, picture it in your minds' eyes..."

In his way, Domic Salish directs you in the translating, but let's have one of the paradoxes make the actual roll. After that, well move to a new thread for scene 3.
May 18, 2018 2:23 pm
Duke squats and mutters since he hasn't even had time to take a leak today due to how busy they have been.

He clears his mind and tries to focus.

I doubt I would be able to beat that roll, so that's all on Duke. So where do you want us to post our Ardeyn focuses?
May 18, 2018 4:18 pm
Duke's leadership during the translation speeds the transition, reducing the acclimation time to zero, and all tasks relating to your new foci will have difficulty reduced by one step for an hour.
OOC:
Discuss your new foci in the Out of Character thread. A new thread will open up for scene 3 shortly, but let's get the Ardeyn foci hammered down before play resumes.
