Character questions

Post here if you have any questions about making a character
Mar 26, 2018 4:47 am
You mention humans and elves in the setting are there any guidelines with regard to other races available? Or are we free to use our imaginations?

You're completely free. One of the main goals of this system is to open it up to the story and roll playing. Race doesn't have an impact to stats at all so it would be entirely for added flavor. When making your character it seems super easy to customize and even states that when adding features you don't have to use all available points at a given time. Since you might decide to save some for a later point to purchase another skill point or something I ask that on the character sheet you make you keep a section for unused points so we don't have to dig through and try to recalculate.

I'm a bit confused about banes and boons.

They're only mentioned briefly in the character creation process, but there is really no steps dedicated to them, and then when you look at the archetype builds, they have all those actions capable of inflicting banes and boons.

So what, if I boost an attribute high enough, I can basically perform an action for each of the boon or bane I qualify for? Is that it?

My understanding is that, if you meet the attribute prerequisite, your character is technically able to invoke that boon or bane, but you're kind of on the honor system to make sure it's an action that makes sense in character

Ok. Tell me if this idea just won't work in the setting. there's a mythological creature in many Latin cultures called a duende. It's like a mischievous (sometimes evil depending on the culture) gnome that often helps lost (sometimes lures away and eats) children. I'm thinking that in modern days, a duende would be an interesting private eye type character. Often gets brought in for missing persons cases that the cops don't have time for, but you can never fully escape where you're from and there's definitely a bad element among the duende.

I'm really into the idea of a small sized character because my first idea was a Pixie Necromancer or Assassin.

That idea is dope, roll with it. I'll read up on the boons and banes I remembered it going into more detail elsewhere, I just don't remember how specifically.

More detail comes in here. It's under the combat rules. WarDomo is correct your character is able to invoke any bane or boon provided that you can roll for it and that it makes sense to the rp of your character.
As an example if you choose to play as some type of rock golem trying to invoke the boon flight probably doesn't make sense, but it would if you were playing some type of furie sent to punish people. Still at minimum you'd have to roll a 20 with your attribute dice to accomplish it though. To roll you'd have a 1d20 and what ever your given attribute level is for that boon. In the case of flight you can use either alteration or movement.

Does this make sense?

Using the pregenerated character Damian we can see that if he wants to use flight he'd have to level up movement or alteration to at least level 5 to be eligible to roll for it.

However if he wants to use heal he can use his presence score of 3 to perform heal at up to level three. He would be rolling 1d20+1d8 trying to roll higher than a 16 to succeed. At level 3 he would be able to heal Heal 1d8.
OOC:
with my roll here that would not have been a success, but it could have been a success with a twist or a failure but the story progresses, which is at the DM's discretion.

Rolls

heal level 3 (presence level 3) - (1d20+1, 1d8)

1d20+1 : (9) + 1 = 10

1d8 : (1) = 1

I found this on reddit which should help making a character way easier, plus it has links to available banes and boons which shows what you can roll for based on your stats.

That's a great tool!

Are we using Perks & Flaws?

As far as during character creation, that's totally up to you. I think it might help flavor the game somewhat. If you feel like it would hinder you to start then you can skip it. Depending on how the game progresses and whether it seems like we need it I may assign them out. I plan on being very flexible and fluid, as that seems in line with the game.

I'm thinking about a 'Professional Curse Breaker Witch' for my character. She is descended form a long line of witches and warlocks. Rumor is one of her grandmothers was an actual Hag, and another was a Siren. She will start out with Entropy and Protection as her main go to, but pick up Influence as we advance maybe. I also am thinking that 3 points of her Feats are going to be spent on Flight, but rather than wings, she can tie a strand of hair to an object and fly with it. Typically a broom is good for show, but anything can work as long as it would be sturdy enough to hold her weight. She has solid tungsten ring she wears as a bracelet for emergencies.

She is likely on the poor side, because she has a tendency to work Pro-Bono when someone presents her with a hard-luck case, or her rich clients act like jerks. Kind of a less gruff Jessica Jones type...a witch rather than a two-fisted detective.

Personally, I was thinking of doing a red-mage-like character called Crimson Jack. I was toying with the idea of perhaps making him half-ice elemental (which would be funny since he'd dress in red and calls himself Crimson Jack, perhaps as a way to distract people away from his true origin...).

Character isn't done yet, but I'll submit it right away. Looking at the archetypes, they seem to have between 5-11 moves, so I guess I should shoot for roughly this amount, with maybe aiming for the higher end of the bracket (8-11) since my character is an hybrid fighter/mage...

These all look awesome.

I didn’t mention it before, but my plan is to be fairly heavy on prescience and movement with some Creation
Mar 27, 2018 9:49 pm
I noticed on some of the archetype that their favored move sometimes affect an area or multiple target. How do you build that?
Mar 27, 2018 10:15 pm
I'm not sure I'm understanding the question, I know off the top of my head that if you'd like to damage multiple targets at once or a larger than 5' cube for area damage you roll with disadvantage. Were you asking about the mechanic specifically or how to create a character that specializes in that type of attack?
Mar 27, 2018 10:16 pm
The disadvantage is one level of disadvantage per enemy or per 5 foot segment on the cube. So if you want to fldamge 3 people at once you would need looking at disavantage 2.
Mar 28, 2018 1:26 am
There's also an aura boon that can apply a second effect to an area. There's also a couple feats for multiple target stuff
