The Academy - Character Creation

May 22, 2018 5:16 pm
Post your character ideas here, as well as any questions related to character creation.

Looking at prospective ideas, so far we have

Meribson - Chiss Gadgeteer
-Like the idea

Joress - Performer, Vanguard, Medic
-I like the Vanguard/Medic more than the Performer. Were you thinking someone who already works with/for the Rebellion?

emsquared - Force Wizard
-Like the idea. Just remember, if you start using the Force openly, you're going to draw attention.

Yea, I noted the year...

Depending on what others do, the "Mind Taker"/Face-type was at the top of my list, ie unless someone else does a Spec that would cover the "Face" duties.

Just so I can plan appropriately, will I have any access to a "Mentor" to assist with learning basic Powers, whether actual person or holocron?

The group resource to start will be a ship, so you'll need to pay full price for any force powers at character creation. As the story progresses, there might be opportunities to increase your force abilities outside the standard "buying with xp" method

Yeah, for the Soldier, I was going to have him be a part of the Rebellion already. Whether you needed him to be on assignment to pick up some others, or stumble into the group, I was going to build off either one fine. I'll need to come up with more of his backstory...

My Performer idea was that he was an illusionist that traveled around luxury ships for a while, until he was brought into heist job for his slight of hand skills. Plan fell through, but he escaped, and has had to keep a low appearance since then, teaming up with other less than savory people now to make ends meet.

But, with that said, if you think the Soldier fits better, I'm totally cool with going that route.

Welcome Ninja_Dano and Silim. Updating the character ideas

Meribson - Chiss Gadgeteer

Joress - Vanguard/Medic
-I like the Soldier specs better. Especially since it seems emsquared is leaning toward a face type

emsquared - Force Face

Ninja_Dano - Spy
-Good, we needed a sneaky type

Silim - Force Sensitive from a military family
-I like the idea, but make sure you include how he goes from an empire friendly family to a rebel operative

The only thing we don't have is a dedicated pilot, which is totally fine. That being said, the group will have a ship, and will need to use it from time to time (other than as a free hyperdrive), so if someone wanted to grab a few piloting ranks, they will get use.

Also for Ninja_Dano, who expressed interest in being a Rebel operative, the best bet would be to have your characters be sort of freelance Rebel operatives to start, more like Hera than Cassian. They're on Lanthrym when they get an urgent message to assemble a crew for a mission.

As a bounty hunter, I can function as a pilot when the time arises. He won't have any talents geared towards it, but he's got both planetary and space as career skills

Currently thinking that my as of yet unnamed chiss is an exile from chiss space, and if I had the funds to spare his armor would be covered in wicked spikes as both an identifier and to scare the piss out of his quarry. If I did that though, all of his money would have been spent on that with nothing left for his weapons.

His main thing is building an intimidating reputation and an iconic look, both with his armor and that he uses slugthrowers as his primary weapons.

Sounds good! I'll work it up and flesh out his backstory.

Cool, thanks for the invite first of all.

I was thinking a Spy/slicer type. I'll look at the options I have but essentially the idea is this guy is a special operative who does the things the rebellion doesn't like but are forced to do: subversion, sabotage, assassination. Basically he turns people on each other, blows stuff up or shuts it down, and has no qualms about assassinating someone when asked. He's not a Partisan though. He's firmly in the main rebel organization, knows how to take orders and understands what's required of him. His skillset allows him some freedom to do as he wants in terms of information gathering and spying and is called on when dirty jobs need doing.

This is just the early concept. When I go to build him it may change but I'll be focusing on those themes primarily. I'll also look into adding piloting so he can be a back-up (or primary) opposite of Meribson.

Alright, now that I'm home and not on my phone - here's the full character concept I had in mind! This is a character concept I've had for a long time, but had not found a game for yet...

Name: Hira Darksun
Species: Human (Echani)
Age: 23
Career/Spec: Completely open. Probably gonna want some Force wizardry stuff, but I don't want to steal emsquared's thunder. If he goes for a face-type force user heavy into the mental powers, then I'll go for more physical powers like Move and Enhance. Will probably pick up Imperial Cadet with those 50 extra EXP for flavor reasons.

Full background idea:

The Darksun family has served in the Republic's intelligence agency for generations, and did so before, during and after the Clone Wars when the Republic became the Empire. Usually patriots to a fault, yet also highly mistrustful of the Jedi Order, when they came for a young Hira on Coruscant, her father turned them away and refused to give her up.

Growing up during the war, Hira only rarely saw her strict father, and her mother died while she was young. She was never told that the Jedi once wanted to recruit her, and her father used his influence to get all records of it erased, yet she still felt a strange connection to the temple even as a child. On the night of Order 66 and the end of the clone wars, she felt true fear for the first time as a 6 year old, but didn't know why until she got older and learned that the Jedi she had admired from afar had been branded traitors and eradicated.

With her father stationed back on Coruscant, he tried to teach Hira to be a true supporter of the new Empire, but the young girl had a keen ability to see the faults, flaws and corruption destroy what little good remained of the Republic. Growing estranged from him, he finally became fed up with his rebellious daughter and forced her to attend the local Imperial Academy for high-ranking children.

She quickly proved to not be soldier material, let alone officer or covert ops, yet a strange tendency towards luck and chance made her barely scrape by in this hellhole that called itself an Academy. And through this blind luck, she just so happened to overhear someone talk about her on a com-connection, and about her penchant to somehow succeed against all odds. When the arriving shuttle that day sent the same terror through her that she felt when the Jedi fell, Hira escaped the Academy by hiding in some cargo boxes and stowed away on the nearest freighter, determined NOT to find out what kind of person could scare her just by landing their craft. With that, she barely escaped a close-up of an Imperial Inquisitor.

Becoming a drifter on the Outer Rim that kept herself alive through odd-jobs and luck, she started to hear rumors of a rebellion brewing - and eventually, recruitment posters and graffiti for the "Alliance to restore the Republic".

And following a hunch that maybe the restoration of the Republic will allow her to stop running, she's going to join the recruitment for that high-priority mission.

--

Well, that turned out longer than I wanted. Should cover all important bases though! Right now I'm considering Mystic/Seer/Imperial Cadet, to show the full range of supernatural luck, strong force sensitivity and the bit of Imperial training she got (Unlimited Power, please get released soon). But as I said, I could just as easily make her any other F&D career and specialization and it'll fit.
May 22, 2018 11:51 pm
Alright, here's the rough draft. I am open to any suggestions or changes. I'll have a full background most likely tomorrow, but I wanted to get all of your opinions on the build itself. I took specializations based on what I had in mind for his backstory and then fit the skills in to match. He sneaks in, steals or gathers intel, sabotages stuff, and dabbles in wetwork when necessary.

Kelen Pell (Human)
Career: Spy
Specializations: Infiltrator, Slicer, Recruit
Talents: Defensive Stance, Bypass Security, Basic Combat Training, Tactical Combat Training

Characteristics - BR 2, AG 3, IN 3, CU 3, WI 2, PR 2

Skills of Note:
- Cool
- Deception
- Perception
- Skulduggery
- Stealth
- Streetwise

He has a lot of career skills due to the three specializations as well but only ranks in the skills above.

Looking cool Ninja_Dano and Silim!

I'll throw my initial character idea out here to for all to review. I need to fill in some gaps and double check species talents and XP, but here you go...

Lot'Tusina'Tenac (or "Lotus" for short)
Species: Drabatan
Career: Soldier
Specialization: Vanguard (soon Medic too)

Characteristics: BR(3) AG(3) INT(3) CUN(2) WIL(2) PRE(2)
(I need to double check those species stats, but that's what I'm aiming for. Might rearrange a BR and WIL, but we'll see.)
EDIT: Actual stats will be 3 3 3 1 2 3

Skills of note (so far):
Range Heavy
Medicine
Warefare

Lotus and his cousin Pao (from Rogue One fame) both found themselves suffering tragedies of the Empire. It was Pao who ultimately encouraged Lotus into joining with him to do something about it. A skilled soldier with medical training, Lotus is anxious and ready for his next assignment to support the fledgling Rebel Alliance.

More backstory to follow soon.

I like the backstory. Ties in surprisingly well with some stuff I had in mind. I’m not sure Mystic is the right career though. With emsquared planning a Force wizard/face, I wouldn’t be surprised if he went with Mystic/Seer. Maybe we can come up with something else that fits. Just an FYI, but the game will reach "knight" level fairly quickly, so doing something that can handle a saber wouldn’t be a terrible idea :)

I don’t want you guys to min/max but please don’t take 3 specs at only 50xp. The later talents (cough, dedication, cough) can be really good. You probably want to be deep in a spec before a second career, let alone a third.

What book is Drabatan in? I’m fine with you being Pao’s cousin. (Do you play Galaxy of Heroes?)
May 23, 2018 1:16 am
Cool. Drabatan’s are in the Dawn of Rebellion source book.

I don’t play Galaxy of Hero’s, unfortunately! Is Pao really good in it or something? I loved that character as soon as I saw him in Rogue One!
May 23, 2018 1:19 am
Yeah, Pao is a good toon to have in the latest raid. Pretty heavy hitter.

Overall he’s pretty terrible. But he’s a key piece of the team you need to beat Darth Traya in the new raid. So in the past few months, everyone farmed him.

So I finally settled on a name for my chiss: Drazzu'som'rarsu

He prefers Zusom.

Still working on backstory and personality, but a mechanical sparknotes is as follows:
Ag 3, In 3, Wi 3, Pr 1 (everything else 2)
Soak 5, WT 14, ST 13

Rnk 1 Skills: Athletics, Cool, Mechanics, Perception, Piloting (Space), Ranged (Light), Vigilance
Rnk 2 Skills: Coercion, Ranged (Heavy)

Talents: Brace, Toughened, Intimidating, Spare Clip, Jury Rigged, Point Blank, Armor Master

Weapons: Slugthrower Rifle, ASP-9 "Vrelt" Autopistol (slugthrower pistol with Auto Fire)
Armor: Laminate

He doesn't hit as hard with his weapons as a blaster might, but it helps establish his reputation. To quote the Order 66 episode, his archetype is "I'm going to scare the piss out of you, and then collect the bounty." That said, while his current focus is on fear, he will still work on getting tricked out gear.
