Yea, it's definitely not auto-win in most standard situations (especially combat).
But there's times when it can completely "F" the GMs plans (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but...). Like when you're trying to get a McGuffin: BBEG has the McG in his hands up on the upper deck of the control bridge, and is delivering his dramatic speech, before escaping with it? Well, I've got the "secure mountings" upgrade and Long Range. I yoink it. GM: "Well crap, there went my whole next session where I thought you were gonna have to chase this guy."
Or, "You gotta capture this guy, and he just spotted you walking into the cantina and takes off!", Well, I have the Sil 1 upgrade and Long Range, I yoink him over to us. GM: "Crap. There went my dramatic chase scene!"
Or, "This ruthless black market merchant has your McG, and will only sell it to you if you do this thing for him!", I Influence him to believe that we've done it AND paid him already, give us the Guffin! GM: "Crap there went my next session where you had to do this thing. Which was also the same thing that was gonna hook you up with this plot NPC. Double crap!"
Granted there are sometimes narrative controls like, "Do you really want to show yourself as a Force User in this seedy cantina full of bounty hunters?" But also if the GM is being so restrictive that you can't use this thing that you've invested SO heavily into, it's gonna create frustration...
The Force isn't all powerful, but it can certainly break certain situations in a way that no normal skill or Talent can.
Edit: apologies everyone, this convo should probably be in the cantina...
