For various reasons you have all decided that your time in Waterdeep has come to an end. As such, you have all booked passage upon the Lucky Dice bound for Kingsbay in the Moonshae Isles. You are not rich, so Captain Sars placed you in a common cabin with several other less affluent travelers. You stake your claim to a hammock and spend the next few days getting to know your companions.

Please introduce your character and describe what the others learn about you in the next few days.

Is Happy in a cage in the common area? In chains?
May 27, 2018 4:48 am
OOC:
I had thought about that. What if Happy escaped from his owner and booked a trip aboard the Lucky Dice? Does that work for you?

If not and you want to start as a slave in the ship's hold then that will work too. It's up to you! He definitely wouldn't be in the common cabin though.

He could have booked passage. Maybe he had to do some dark stuff to get away...

Laeren appears as a tall, skinny male drow (dark skin, with white long hair usually worn in a ponytail). He wears mostly black clothes, including a black hooded cloak, but always has one brightly colored item such as a scarf, or a shirt. Laeren, spends the daytime inside, doing his trance sleep and resting, and spends the first few nights mostly on deck, trying to get some fresh air and fighting massive sea sickness. He is often heard muttering "I hate ships." He's feeling better by the 3rd day and after that spends his nights hanging out with whoever stays up late in the common cabin, drinking and playing cards or dice. He doesn't volunteer much about himself but when asked, says he's traveling to the islands because of the warmer climate. He says hates the cold weather on the main continent. "Winter in Waterdeep is brutal, frickin' snow everywhere!" If asked why he left the Underdark he sarcastically answers with an overly sweet voice "because I love sunshine and butterflies". If someone asks what kind of work he does, he shrugs and answers "this and that, whatever pays"

Laeren does ask a lot of questions though. He seems curious about different places and their people, and especially loves to hear stories about encounters with interesting beasts and monsters of the surface world. You get the impression he hasn't spent a lot of time above ground, just a few months in Waterdeep.

Late at night when everyone else has gone to sleep, he goes up on the main deck and sits and watches the stars and the waves.

Zev, an Elven wizard in spotless robes storms out of the common sleeping quarters heading towards the captain. "My good captain, you obviously know who my father is, and you know that I am doing everything I can to leave his name out of it, but to put me with those common quarters is unheard of. I have spent the last 6 months working on this very ship and when you promised me a letter of recommendation and free passage, I assumed it would be as an exalted guest, not as some lowly peasant. To think, one such as I to "bunk", as they say, in some sort of hanging sack trussed up like a sack of rice. It's unheard of and I do protest most strongly." Zev stands there tapping his foot excitedly awaiting a response from the captain.

Captain Sars looks to Zev and sneers, an ugly gesture considering his wooden dentures. You want a private cabin then you pay for it. Got enough coin and you can even have my cabin. If you ain't, then shut yer filthy sewer and get outta my sight or I'll keelhaul yer.

Ryca, as she has introduced herself as, is a lithe elf with dark gray hair. She is dressed in a plain white gown, keeping her look simple, but the necklace around her neck depicts her as some form of royalty. Her reason for being upon the vessel is unknown other than 'To get away from it all' as she so stately puts it. While she enjoys passing the time with card games, she hardly ever finishes them. She usually excuses herself and disappears for around an hour.

Standing off to the side watching the waves and endless seascape, her hair billowing in the rushing winds, she turns scrunching up her face "Ooooh, please. I swear you're complaining more than a child who got their sweets taken from them. How about instead of focusing on what you aren't getting—for free mind you—focus on the beauty around you." She turns back to the rolling waves "I mean, just look at the endless blue, stretching for miles, specked by the sparse fluffy white clouds conjoined with the beautiful shining sun." She lays against the railings, closing her eyes "And too think, we get this for free. Magic."
May 28, 2018 4:06 am
Zev quickly starts to back peddle "I.. we, you.. ohhh of all the... I do not have to stand here and take this. I am going to my room." Zev quickly turns around and walks off, "Come along coral, I know when we're not wanted." A greenish gray crab comes skittering along next to him as they head to the bunk room. As Zev goes into the common room he chooses the hammock furthest from the door and using a combination of prestidigitation and mending, he quickly cleans the filth and stains off of the hammock and repairs the small rips. In a practiced motion, he gracefully rolls into the hammock, picking up his crab as part of the movement and placing it onto his chest. After a short time, Zev gently starts tapping the shell with his fingers as the crab burrows into the robes gathered on top of his chest. Talking quietly to the crab he starts muttering, staring up at the ceiling... "Don't worry, this will soon be over, we will have our own ship, then our own fleet, and then and only then will he see me for who I really am."

The little wild man talks little. He eats differently than what you normally see halflings eat. Whereas most eat with their mouths open, spewing stories and sharing food in equal measure. He eats with pursed lips, mouth barely moving as he chews. He has a disheveled appearance, including ratty long hair (much akin to an 80s rocker with a full head of nasty unkept hair. Despite his size, his well-used stone battleaxe, his bear-toothed and bear-clawed necklace, he is pretty friendly if you choose to sit with him and start a conversation.

His speech is pretty broken, but he would introduce himself in the following fashion: Hi. I Hepi. You big. He would smile big, then say, pointing to himself: Man Hepi. Man, Woman, you? After you identified yourself and your gender, he would then explain, Good! People me no shirt. Know quick if woman. He would gesture hefting something near his bosoms with both hands to indicate how he would know quick in his tribe if you were a woman.

When the captain asks for "Happy", Hepi corrects his accent, I (hard H sound)Hu-pee.

He loves spending his nights on deck, watching the open sky, or standing at the front of the boat looking at the darkness and its contrasting celestial lights. He missed this about the wild; Waterdeep had too much light pollution that it was hard to see the familiar sky. The constellations are a bit different out here, moved slightly in the sky, but he still recognizes them to know where he is, how far from his old home.

He comes to the deck when the crew tells him to head back into the common quarters to get out of their way. There, he finds women and tries to cuddle with them, if they will let him. He is very cuddly, after all...
May 28, 2018 1:56 pm
Laeren notices that the wild little man who talks funny comes outside to look at the stars every night too, so after the 1st night, he comes to stand next to him. "We don't have these where I come from. What do your people think they are?" he asks pointing to the stars.

Earlier when Hepy asked his "man, woman, you?" question, Laeren winked and answered "a little bit of column A and a bit of column B".

After moping around the room for the better of an evening, Zev ventures out onto the deck to watch the night and get some food. As he walked towards the galley, he saw two of the more loathsome crew members, the ones who tormented him for the past 6 months, waiting in line for food. Smirking, he cuts in front of the two of them. "Oh pardon me, but I do believe that passengers are fed before the crew. Don't mind me. Ah fish chowder again, I've always loved the delicate flavors of this particular dish, don't you?" Zev takes a deep smell of the bowl and eyes the two bowls the others just picked up. Zev then bends down to feed a piece of fish to his familiar crab, and mutters a quick incantation and changes the flavor of the fish chowder in their bowls to a rancid rotten fish flavor. As he stands back up and turns around, he takes a big spoonful of the chowder "Mmm, chef outdid himself tonight, enjoy..." With a quick smirk, Zev strolls out the door onto the deck to eat his meal under the stars.

Hepi doesn't really understand what the dhekdia-khjila means by this statement. He doesn't get into it, but this androgynous man is asking about the sky, so he responds, as he uses his fingers to connect the dots in the sky: Fire is bear, over is lion, fight bear, bear eat heart of lion, become more strong. Pointing to his own bare and hairy chest, as he puffs it out: Le'nuakuu bear family.

@Zev: One of the sailors moves as if to confront you but another sailor grabs his arm, looks him in the eye and shakes his head.

The first sailor looks you in the eye, grins and allows you to go to the front of the food line.

After a few moments you hear a commotion from inside the galley. What the hell do you call this Grease Guts!? I'll flay the skin from yer bones for that!

Then you hear the sounds of fighting.
May 29, 2018 11:41 am
"Bear? Huh?" says Laeren. He then pauses for a moment listening. He hears sounds of fighting coming from the dining area and says with a grin "Well Bear, it looks like this cruise comes with entertainment. I'm going to see what the noise is all about." and starts following the sounds of fighting.

Over the first few days, I do not interact much. At meal times, I sit alone, my back to a wall, my long brown hair tied into a ponytail, and my green eyes on those around me. Every morning I go through the same routine, praying and casting druidcraft to see the weather. If anyone were to approach me, I would be cautious but would not oppose conversation.

Sitting in the back of the galley a young Tiefling with grey skin and downturned horns watched the fight from a distance. She wore simple dark clothes without shoes and a purple scarf that marched the dark purple color of her hair, her face rarely displaying any emotion, resembling a look of calm disinterest unless she discovered some new knowledge of interest.
As a crowd formed around the cook and the sailor, Feral, to anyone that asked, decided there was nothing of interest happening and continued to eat her meal. It was rare to see her outside of the common cabins in her hammock, she mostly kept to herself but would respond politely if spoken to. Although she spoke politely and with manners to rival the most sophisticated person her voice never betrayed any emotion, like her face she always seemed overtly composed.
Despite her appearance and mannerisms, her thoughts were a little different, I wish they would just shut up, it's too damn loud in here. Just eat your meal and be quiet.

@Laeren: You manage to fleece 2 gold and 10 silver pieces from the distraced sailor's purse.

@ Happy: You try to grapple but one of the sailors prevents you from interfering with the fight. You can only watch between the sailor's legs.

@Feral: You don't see Laeren pick the sailor's pocket.

@Waya: After the smoke fills the room, the sailors snarl in disgust and then disperse. You have effectively broken up the fight.
May 30, 2018 1:28 am
You spend the next week or so in a similar fashion. However, that all changes one day when you awaken to find swords at your throat. Everybody out. the sword says. You nod and slowly get to your feet. You are led up to the main deck along with several other passengers. You see Captain Sars in conversation with a very odd-looking dwarf with a red beard and a mohawk. Connected to the dwarf's belt by a large thick chain is a wizened old gnome with big round glasses on his head.
Here you are Captain Copperbeard, delivery as promised. Now for my er payment?
Ye tree deys let ya slimmy bucketa turd shite. the dwarf says in a very thick mountain accent. Ye'll get whatsa old te ye right enough. Now get these larks locketed ona Jug and then ye'll get ya feckin coin. Tell him ye good for nought else besterd son of a whorena thislte toad.

At this the wizened old gnome moves forward and bows deeply and addresses Captain Sars.
Captain Copperbeard sends his compliments and thanks you for your punctuality. Once the cargo has been transferred to our ship we will deliver the 50 gold per person as agreed.

In horror you realise the captain has sold you out. Literally! You are taken to the weirdest ship you have ever seen. For one thing it appears to have been constructed entirely out of lead or perhaps iron. You have absolutely no idea how it manages to stay afloat. Also, there are no visible sails. There does appear to be some sort of steering wheel and rudder however. The deck is filled with all manner of machines, which seem to have been slapped together and added haphazardly as if the designer had no foresight at all with regards to the ship's design. The sound of them all whirring away is quite horrendous.

You are lead to a small deck where the sword, or I should say, the orc wielding the sword, finally removes it from your throat and has you sit near what appears to be some sort of sail-less mast. wait! the voice says roughly.

After a short while you see Captain Copperbeard climbs aboard and walk up to the lot of you with his gnome translator in tow.
now ye lessen her ye slimmy skunk buckets of mucus piss. This ere is mai shi' an ye wanna et then ye bedda do whatever the feck I sey or else. Ye gedit? De jugs the onla ting I give a rats erse abou' an if ye wenna live then ye bedda be more fekin useful then de las lo'!

Then he grabs the gnome and shoves him forward.
Captain Copperbeard bids you welcome aboard our mighty ship the Jug O-Nought! He does appologize and sympathize that your position and autonomy has been somewhat compromised. However, you are now a part of the crew and here we treat the crew like family. So on behalf of the crew I would like to say welcome to the family. Think of Captain Copperbeard as your father and like any good father he provides for his children. We have prepared a welcome feast in your honour. After a short pause Copperbeard berates you
Whatcha waitin for ye lilly livereed lassies? A suk from me mudder's teat! Get the feck offin me dick!
The gnome interjects A hot meal and a berth is awaiting you below decks. We do hope that you enjoy your new life here with us. Please make haste down to the ship's galley. I do appologise if the fare is not what you are used to. We lost our last cook in our last ah, business transaction.

You make your way down to the galley where you see a disgusting looking goblin pick his nose, sniff it and then add it to a pot. It looks up at you and grins. It ladles a few bowls of "stew" and hands one to each of you. You sit down and take stock of your situation.

You have all managed to secretly hide one of your possessions but the rest have all been taken from you. Please note which possession you have on you on your character sheets and let me know in your next post.

The soft face of the female elf with luscious gray hair is not present amongst the group. Instead, a new face graces your presences. A man, his face mostly covered with a wrapped turban, his black holes of eyes never leave the gaze of Captain Sars. He begins to whisper in a harmonic melody
[ +- ] Celestial
As they are lead to the galley, he turns to the gnome and gives a nod before descending down "You have my thanks for your hospitality." He gathers his bowl of slop and gives a nod to the goblin. Under the table, he grabs a pouch hanging on his belt to find solace.

Throughout the entire exchange, Feral hid amongst the crowd staying low and out of sight, managing to hide a small dagger between her breasts before being transferred to the strange and eccentric ship.
Following the crowd on deck, she took notice of the strange metallic design and couldn't help wanting to know more about how it stays afloat. While their new captain and his little gnome friend made their glowing speeches to the newcomers Feral found it hard to pay attention but caught one of them say something about a new family or other. Deciding that the information was irrelevant she only bothered to take her mind off the ship's design long enough to ridicule them in her head.
After following the crowd to the galley Feral sat and contemplated her situation, seeing no current way out of it she decides its best to stay quiet for the time being and wait for a good opportunity to get the hell out of there.

Hepi, in the commotion of what happened, was not able to find his trusty battleaxe nor any of his other weapons. He did manage to hide his small tinderbox between his legs, which was covered nicely by his abnormally large...third limb.

He listens to the speeches, pissed off that this captain sold him into slavery...again.

It'll all be okay, Hepi thinks to himself. I've gotten myself out of a situation like this before. Though, it is interesting that I am not in chains. Thank goodness for that!

Now, to find something flammable.
OOC:
Just so you all know, his command of the Common language is rough, but he understands the language perfectly, though maybe not getting the nuanced innuendo and what-not.
As Hepi is escorted to the mess, he is looking around for things that may be flammable enough to cause a stir in this ship. That should make for an interesting distraction...

Theres a lot of wood about but it all looks pretty damp. You see some sailors drinking booze though. Maybe you could find the supply and burn that. Probably not a good idea to do that right now as you feel dozens of eyes follow your every movement.

As soon as Zev wakes up with a sword at his throat, Coral clatters to the ground with a blanket draped over it, making as much noise as possible and blinks out of existence. Zev reaches and grabs for his spell book, placing it in the small of his back. As soon as the guard turns back he starts to act out. "What is going on? I must protest most fiercely. This is simply unheard of. I do hope you have representation because I have several solicitors on retainer that I am more than willing to bring forth if need be. This is a direct violation of the free waters act." With a quick nick at his throat to be quiet, Zev closes his mouth and follows the others. After hearing the captain sell them out, Zev's vindictive side comes out. Looking around, he quietly utters the words and motions for prestidigitation, and thinks of the ropes coiled on the deck 10 feet away, and the edges of the sail above his head, small flames start to appear, tiny insignificant flames that with just the right amount of wind and time might erupt. Zev follows the others down below, "Well if you need a new cook, I do have some experience and can make an excellent tasting stew." Zev smiles at the old gnome.

Laeren has made a conscious decision to stay in their male form during the journey, to avoid having to explain themselves. However, this "blessing of Correlon" (or curse as Laeren views it) is still new and they don't have complete control over it. After a night of vivid dreams, they wake up to find themselves in female form. "Oh shit." she says. Then she notices the orc with a dagger. "Oh fuck."

As Laeren puts her boots on, the orc finds the hilt of a dagger sticking out of her right boot and confiscates it. Laeren sighs saying "nothing gets past you, huh?". She walks dejectedly with the other prisoners. She knows the drill, though she's never been on this side of it. As she walks, her eyes dart around sharply taking everything in, looking for any weaknesses to exploit later.

She doesn't do much to hide the look of amusement at seeing the captain and his gnome translator. As they're about to be lead away, she shouts to the translator "Hey parrot, does this translation thing you do work both ways? You can tell the captain to go fuck himself."
OOC:

@Ziv: Your little work with the prestidigitation goes un-noticed but as you sail away from the Lucky Dice you don't notice any flames or anything, so it musn't have done any significant damage.
@Laeren : Several of the crew clearly snigger at your bold assault. The captain either didn't hear you, doesn't understand your accent or pretended not to hear you.
@Happy: The crew are all looking at your group. Most are giving you sympathetic looks as if they'd been there and done that but a few are looking at you with a predatory gleam in their eyes. You see a female drow look at you and give you a friendly smile. That's about as close to a friendly welcome as you gonna get.

@Everyone: After you're about three-quarters of the way through your meal the sword-bearing orc from before approaches your table, slaps the food out of your hands and introduces himself.
They call me Rotgut, but you maggots will call me either midshopman (sic) or sir. I'm the unlucky son of a bitch whose been given charge a yer. Now I unna stand that a few a yer might be haborin a little ana mosty, so lets get that oudda way first.

"Animosity is such a loaded word, I personally don't feel that there is a need to fight. We are all adults here." Zev turns to look at Hapi "I mean I think we're all adults here. Instead of this kind of a hard sell, why not go with the positives for being on board. Is there any incentives for not fighting? I mean are we taken as slaves or are we part of the crew? If we are slaves, how do we earn back our freedom. If we are part of the crew then forget my question about slavery, and do we get part of the spoils for whatever nefarious schemes this captain has for us?" Zev puts his bowl onto the floor. "Obviously good food isn't a selling point, but before anyone takes up arms, perhaps you, or someone a little more well read, can explain to us our current situation and options."
Jun 2, 2018 8:09 pm
"I have fish guts running down my pants," Feral said in her most emotionless voice. Sarcastically screaming in her head, Obviously we are slaves, you don't sell people off to join a crew. This is a form of control, a way to make us dependent and warry of the situation. Standing up she tried to shake the stew out of her trousers, unsuccessfully, looking to Zev she says, "You have some in your hair too."

Hepi takes the first blow, but it doesn't do as much damage as the orc hoped. He takes it and smiles, enjoying himself far too much to let that little pain bother him.

OOC:
Per RAW: An unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes. So your rolls would be 1d20+strength mod+proficiency to hit. An unarmed strike isn't finesse or range so sneak attack doesn't apply.

This is ignoring certain feats and the monk class, which change unarmed strikes.
Ryca has little concern for the combat, with his meal destroyed, he attempts to make his way up, back to the top deck.

OOC:
@Feral. No problem. I got this. You can use either your strength or your dex plus proficiency bonus. Your damage is equal to 1+ your strength mod plus sneak attack. So I need you to make an attack roll. As you are trying to surprise the orc, I'd like you to make a deception or stealth check DC 11. If you pass the check I'll give you advantage on the attack.

Laeren passed a DC11 stealth check on their attack, does that one count as a sneak attack too? It was a ranged attack, so not sure it applies in that case.

After a few minutes Rotgut manages to come around. He stares up at you with a mixture or surprise and respect on his face. Magic uzers, aye? We'll aint that somtin'. I think we're gonna work out jus' fine. He slowly gets to his feet, poors some grog down the unconscious party members' throats and they come back to conscioisness with a cough.
OOC:
At 1hp. Just so you know.
The good newz iz, we don' have ter do much work on dis ship. She's fully automated. All we gotta do is fight the other ships and take deer shi'. You guys get some rest and tommora we're gonna do some more trainin'. Then rotgut leaves the galley.

After the crows disipates, a young elven woman with purple hair approaches your group.
Don't worry too much about Rotgut. He's not such a bad bloke and he's a good man to have on your side in a fight. My name's Lissa and I've been in your shoes, so I'll go over a few of the rules here. First off, as Rotgut said, we don't have any jobs per se. Bronzebeard might occasionally ask us to do some heavy lifiting but mainly, he and his parrot do most of the work. He encourages us to fight as much as possible but don't ever kill another member of the crew. Bronzebeard will keel haul you for that. Finally, we split all of the booty. Everyone gets a share. So even though you were press ganged, you're not slaves, no matter what anyone says. Oh and your belongings were deposited in the quartermaster's office. You should be able to find him in the hold. Any questions?
Jun 22, 2018 4:31 am
Hepi shoots awake after the grog enters his mouth, and he rolls over and begins coughing. Rotgut......cough...cough...brother......*pant*...*pant*......my...

He pounds his chest with his right fist as he says this, and then he coughs a couple big coughs and stands up.
Jun 22, 2018 12:58 pm
Zeverelin quickly perks up at the approach of Lissa, giving her a big bow, he uses prestidigitation to clean himself up. "Allow me to introduce myself, Zeverelin Kiirnodel at your service." He snaps his finger and Coral, his familiar crab appears in his hand. and this is Coral. How did such an enchanting lady end up on this crew and exactly how much coin are we talking about?"
Jun 26, 2018 2:58 pm
Hepi is going to try to find Rotgut to speak with him.
Jun 26, 2018 11:29 pm
Lissa replies to Zev We each get an equal share. There are roughly 80 of us on the ship, so if we take anither ship then we will each get 1/80th of the treasure. So if the ship has 8,000 gold then we would each get 80. If we manage to catch a treasure ship then we would each get 800 or possibly more. If you work for more than a year you are free to leave whenever you like and take your savings with you.

"Well besides being forced into it, a years work for a fair exchange doesn't seem to bad. Of course there's the whole hanged till dead part is a bit extreme. I don't suppose there's any paperwork I can get saying that I was pressed into service is there? Probably not. Ah well, best make the most of it. So care to give me a tour of the ship? I'm guessing intelligent conversation is in short supply here and I'd love to know the inner workings of this marvelous ship."
