Scene 1: The train from Korranberg

May 31, 2018 4:34 am
The air is crisp and cool as it blows in from the sea. The scent of brine is present, but not overwhelming. A young clerk makes a few final notes in a ledger then turns to the table behind him. A portfolio of ships schematics is open on the table, designs for a three new scout vessels. Light maneuverable elemental powered airships intended for service in the army of Breland. As the clerk checks one final time that all the drawings are there, Garthinok can see that the engineers have gone all out in their designs. Two elemental flight rings will make the ships turn on a crown. It really is a remarkable concept. Almost surprising that the shipwrights' guild would sell them rather than employ the designs for themselves.

The clerk shuts the portfolio after assuring himself of its contents and closes the flap. Reaching for a candle and his guild seal he drips the melted wax on closing flap and presses it closed. "The client has requested the utmost secrecy regarding these designs, though in truth, word of these designs will spread the moment they take to the air. But we must strive to adhere to the contract. Try not to mention that you saw this before we make delivery next year, aye? Not that I don't trust House Sivis to do its job."

He hands Garth the portfolio and leaves. Garth walks down the stairs to the first floor and across the boardwalk. The lightning rail gleams in the morning light. Below the carriage cars you can see the arcs of electricity that keep the train hovering a few feet off the ground. The smell of ozone competes with the brine of the sea for dominance in the Garth's nostrils. You see your fellow apprentice, Mintina Haskal d'Sivis, standing near a pile of luggage overseeing the half-elf porters loading it onto the train.

"About time you got here. You trying to leave me to do all the work Garthinok Tamlish? Maester Corfan will hear of this! Not that I expect him to actually do anything about it, of course. He does favor you over me, the old lecherous bastard..." That last bit is muttered in a lowear tone. It would seem Mint is in one of her typical foul moods this morning. She never has been good with mornings, and she especially hates traveling. Before her mark appeared she had been training to join the church of the Soverign Host, planning on finding a nice quiet temple to serve in peace somewhere far away from the stronghold of House Sivis. The gods seemed to have other plans for her though. When her mark appeared, she was 'persuaded' by her family to join one of the House guilds and uphold family tradition. Garth knows that once she settles in to her car and gets a cup of tea, she'll sort herself out.

And as if the words summoned him, a massive carriage rounds the corner and approaches the two apprentice scribes. The carriage belongs to your superior in the House, one Maester Corfan Severin d'Sivis. To your dismay, the elderly gnome is seated in the drivers seat of the vehicle, accompanied by two young gnomish women. The old man seems to be clinging to them both for dear life, and loving every minute of the careening ride. The young girls seem to be staying in the seat despite the old man leaning upon them, but they barley have control of the horses that pull the carriage toward you. It seems they are about to crash right through you when a thunderous voice rings out from the old man.

"Halt!" He bellows and the horses skid to a stop as the woman on the left leans hard on the brake bar. "Hee hee heeeee! Xala, you need some more practice before I let you drive the coach again! Hee hee! But thank you for the...hrmm...experience. It is one I will not soon forget." The old gnome pulls the driver, Xala in and kisses her neck, eliciting a squeal of child-like joy from the woman. Then he turns to the other woman, "And Spinove, you have mastered that brake. Thank you for keeping us in one piece." Corfan pulls her close too, the hand wrapped around her squeezing her hip in a slightly scandalous fashion as he kisses her on the cheek.

Corfan drops down from the carriage without so much as a glance back and walks toward Garth and Mint. "Ah, good. Glad to see you both here on time on this fine morning." He gives a little kick step as he approaches. Behind him, the two young women have climbed down from the driver's seat and opened the door to the carriage. Inside, you see three gnome men who are supposed to be Corfan's driver and footmen. They each look a little green from the ordeal. Purple haired Xala and dark haired Sinove make their way to the lightning rail without so much as a hello for the apprentices.

"I trust everything is in order? Garthinok, you collected the papers from the shipwright as I instructed?" It is hardly a question as he points to the portfolio under your arm.
Jun 2, 2018 3:54 am
Garth nods with a weak smile, holding the folio out to his master. "Of course I did! And I'll forget it all, I swear. Err... Yes, I didn't see anything. Um..." he shrugs and gives a rueful smile as he continues to hold out the folio.

"Um, where are we going? Also, aren't you not supposed to be driving? I thought to doctors said you weren't supposed to be driving, anymore..." Garth opens his mouth to say something more, then remembers Mint's constant admonitions against talking all the time. "You really don't have to fill every moment of silence!" she would yell at him.
Jun 3, 2018 1:58 am
"Ah...but I wasn't driving! Xala was. And those doctors don't know what their talking about. My mind and reflexes are as sharp as the day I turned 150! Mind you that was when I took that arrow to the knee. That blasted healer of a real slapdash job patching me up. Never been right since, but I haven't lost a step since." The old gnome pushes his glasses up on his nose with a smug grin.

"What's that about forgetting...eh? No matter, I trust ya laddy. As for where we are going, Wroat, by way of Starilaskur. A highly inefficient route, but there weren't any airships making more direct flights, least none the client was willing to charter for simple paperwork. All the details are set. The shipwrights are starting their work, the client has agreed to the payments by speaking stone. We are just on a glorified couriers with tedious work. That's why I brought something to...heh...distract myself from the boredom." He nods over his shoulder in the direction of the two women.

"If everything is in order, we should get aboard. We are scheduled to leave..." A steam whistle sounds near the front of the train. "...right about now it seems. HA!" And with that Corfan heads toward the train.

The porters, a mix of gnome and humans of Hour Orien finish up their tasks. Down the platform several dozen people are boarding a passenger car. Garth notices one individual in a dark cloak, hood drawn close to their face seems to be watching your party. It could be from the slight spectacle Corfan made upon arriving. From this distance it is hard to tell if the man is human or half-elf, with the hood covering his ears. He stoops to pick up a pack, turning away momentarily, but when he turns back...the full bearded face of a dwarf can be seen, and the man is clearly not as tall as he was before stooping down.
Jun 3, 2018 3:55 am
Garth shakes his head as his master gives his explanations. He opens his mouth a couple times as if to respond to Corfan, but the old man just keeps talking and Garth closes his mouth without saying anything. He continues to hold out the folio until his arm begins to shake slightly and, as it's now obvious that Corfan won't be taking the folio, draws it back and tucks it under one arm.

As the whistle blows and Corfan boards the train, Garth turns to Mint and says in a low tone, "Why did we need him to come along, again? Aren't we responsible enough to do this courier run without him?" He shakes his head, glancing at Mint from the side of his eye, hoping that she agrees with him and doesn't go tattling to their master before he moves to help her load the last piece of luggage onto the train.

As he notices the dark figure, he stops and looks firmly at the figure, trying to see any other details, marks or anything that might give him a clue as to what the figure might be up to.
Jun 4, 2018 6:12 pm
"Bah, don't you know anything? Wool headed fool." Mintina glances around and lowers her tone to just above a whisper, low enough that she is unlikely to be heard over the other noises of the platform. "Because The Client is the king of Breland. You don't send an apprentice to speak with a king. It would be an insult to his pride, so House Sivis has to send someone with some clout. Corfan was at the peace talks. He fits the bill...we would not."
Jun 4, 2018 6:17 pm
From this distance, Garth can't make out anything more significant about the stranger. He seems to be just another traveler, other than he is capable of changing his face in the matter of a few moments without the telltale signs of casting a spell.
Jun 6, 2018 4:10 am
Garth shakes his head, "Why am I always the last to know these things?!" he says in a loud whisper.

When the loading is finished, he goes and finds Corfan and sits in the seat in front of him, ignoring the old man's wandering hands and the two attractive women submitting to said hands. After thinking for several moments, he blurts, "Would you say that our current assignment is fairly dangerous?"
Jun 6, 2018 9:27 pm
Without looking away from Sinove's ample display of flesh Corfan answers Garthinock with a chuckle. "Hee, hee...no, no...well...no, heh...why would you think such a thing, lad?"
Jun 6, 2018 9:57 pm
The car that Garith finds himself in currently is a private car, about 50 feet long, 20 feet wide. The front portion has been fashioned into a sitting room with very comfortably appointed cushioned benches that are somewhat larger than the ones in the standard car. For persons of gnomish stature they are practically couches. There is also an oak desk in the corner for Corfan, or his apprentices, to do some work. A stone hearth is built into one wall, a bound fire elemental can be summoned to warm the car if need be. The only thing that breaks the illusion of the comfortable living room is the fact that everything is bolted into place for safety.

The traveling party has gathered there to start the journey, but Corfan and his two companions, have the back half of this car which is walled off to create a private sleeping chamber. Garthinock and Mintina both have access to individual bunks in the sleeping car directly ahead of this one. Those chambers considerably smaller, a mere 6 feet wide and 10 feet long, including a pallet with a straw mattress.
Jun 7, 2018 3:57 am
Garth shrugs at Corfan's question and answers, "I just saw a shady character, perhaps a changeling, at the station who seemed to be looking at us. So, I was wondering if there's any reason for someone to be following us."
Jun 8, 2018 3:40 am
The older gnome pauses for a moment, then says, "Reasons-a-plenty in my opinion. I am very wealthy. There could be any number of interesting House Sivis secrets rattling around up in the old gourd." He thumps his temple with a finger and clucks his tongue to make a hollow 'thunk' sound emit from his open mouth. "The gray skinned bastard might believe the rumors that we gnomes have enchanted every sitting king and lordling and secretly hold all the strings, manipulating events across Khorvaire. Mind you, I'm not convinced that one isn't true myself, but I've no more proof than they have." He returns his attention to his companions, tickling Sinove and making her jump enticingly. "More than like you're being paranoid Garth. But just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to GIT'CHYA." He turns suddenly and gooses Xala who was seated on his opposite side. She hurls herself to the floor with a shriek of surprise, but is smiling and laughing in good spirits. "Keep a sharp eye, but don't fret yer'self to mightily, lad."

The two Sinove and Xala make eye contact and nod conspiratorially, agreeing to some course of action. They lunge at Corfan who throws himself nimbly toward the opposite bench between Garth and Mint then springs over the back of it. The young women take a moment to gather themselves and smooth their somewhat disheveled skirts before taking off at full tilt. They chase the old man toward his private chamber. Hollering over his shoulder, he adds, "You're free for the day, likely tomorrow too. I'll send if I need any-!" With that the door slams shut and only the muffled squeals and titters of merriment can be heard.

OOC:
At this point you are free to do what you want. I don't want to railroad you any more than I have. *wink, nudge* (pun intended...sorry, I made myself laugh.) If you have things you want to look into or explore on the train you can, or we can jump to the next "event" scene. If you want to skip ahead, just give me a montage of how Garth spends his day off work.
Jun 9, 2018 3:38 am
Garth looks after Corfan with a momentary stab of jealousy at the old man's merriment, then shakes his head and stands. Without looking at Mint, he says, "I'm gonna take a walk."

He walks to the end of the car they are in and moves to the next car, wandering around with the half intention of finding the changeling/dwarf he spotted at the station. He doesn't think that he'll find him, and doesn't know what he'd do if he did, but it's a direction for his scattered mind to take.

As he does this, Garth runs through a mental exercise he was learning in school to clear his mind. Ostensibly, it's used to forget private messages sent for others via sending stone, but Garth hasn't reached that level yet and it's just a simple relaxing exercise for him.
Jun 11, 2018 5:51 am
Corfan's car is at near the rear of the train, just in front of the cargo cars. Ideally this should mean that no one will intrude on his privacy, as no one should have any reason to access the cargo cars while the train is moving. There is a notice on door to the last sleeping car, where Garth and Mint are staying that the next car is private and unauthorized passengers should not enter.

Headed toward the front of the train, Garth passes through three additional sleeper cars each containing five sleeping cells like his own. All the curtains are drawn and hide any occupants from view. Garth passes no one in the corridor. Next comes the first of the steerage cars, most of the car is filled with more cargo, about twenty people, poor families traveling for any number of reasons. They pay no attention to Garth. The next three cars are similarly appointed, but holding more people than cargo, but no one in them appears to be the changeling he thinks he saw earlier.

The standard class cars are next. Four of them hold 50 passengers each on this leg of the trip. There are a few cloaks that could have been the one from the station, but draped over benches or stowed under seats as they are, he can't be sure. There are two galley cars next. The first one he comes to is intended to serve the steerage and standard passengers, the second intended for first class. They are empty except for staff. (At least apparent staff) Garth is greeted by the waitstaff but told that meals are not available for another hour.

The last four cars before the engine are dedicated to the first class passengers. The suspected changeling was seen getting on the last of the first class (furthest from the engine). The first class cars look like well decorated sitting rooms, much like Corfan's private car, but with four distinct seating areas. A party of dwarves has taken over two adjoined seating area. The distance between the changeling and Garth make it hard to be sure which one it was, but there are three that have the right beard and hair color.
Jun 12, 2018 3:50 am
Garth moves forward to the group of dwarves, pulling out his hand-carved flute. "Gentle-Dwarves, my name is Garthinok Tamlish d'Sivis Viltrin Pokk, Garth to friends, family and yourselves. I have been learning a Dwarven drinking song. Would you permit me to play it for you?" He smiles and puts the flute to his lips with a raised eyebrow. He watches the group, looking for one that might be uncomfortable at being recognized or some mannerism that gives them away as being un-Dwarvish.
Jun 12, 2018 5:24 am
The dwarves look at each other, a couple wry smiles are exchanged and the youngest speaks up. "Aye, Yodrol, son of Yodrailen, son of Yodrak Coalmaker. It would be our pleasure to hear your song, young bard. We cherish our heritage and our drinking songs though, we'll not go easy on ye." The other dwarves nod in agreement and settle back to listen.

"Wait a moment, if we are going to listen to drinking songs, then we should be drinking, says I." Another dwarf says. and gets up and walks toward the first class galley.

"A House Sivis bard, never did I see such a thing, I've not."[/b] the second dwarf returns with steins of ale and beer passing them out to his fellows. Settling in they all look at Garth expectantly.
OOC:
OK, so you want to roll Spot check, but just to warn you the DC is high. Changelings get a +10 to their Disguise checks. But also roll your Perform for playing the song. That DC won't be as high. Let's say DC 13 to impress them. Get higher and you can improve their reception.
Jun 14, 2018 5:37 am
Keeping an eye out, Garth begins to play.
OOC:
Rolling. I'm also taking a long weekend for a family vacation so my posting will be sporadic at best. Garth isn't trained in wind instruments, just oratory, so base Charisma here.

Rolls

Spot - (1d20-1)

(11) - 1 = 10

Perform - (1d20+3)

(13) + 3 = 16

Jun 17, 2018 4:49 am
Garthinock notices no one and nothing, out of the ordinary as he plays. The piece isn't especially difficult...for a gnome of his prowess...and the dwarves all start to sing along. Clearly he has impressed them, but his target remains elusive.
Jun 18, 2018 5:14 am
When he finishes the piece, he reaches out and grabs one of the steins of beer, taking a large drink, and cries out, "Who wants another?!" He will then proceed to play and drink and listen and talk with them until he passes out or discovers which one is his quarry.
OOC:
I'm all for letting the dice ride normally, but I'd like to up the ante on this one, make the situation a bit more dangerous, maybe, and try to figure out which one of these guys isn't who he appears to be.
Jun 19, 2018 4:22 am
OOC:
I like it...let's see...obviously another Spot roll is needed...and...

How heavy are you going to drink? You could try to pretend to drink and give me a Bluff check. Or a Fort save if you want to just roll hard see what happens. You have a much better chance at a Bluff skill check I think. DC is 12 either way.
