Ok short version of the backstory.
Baron Kir'anor (half-elf) d'Nari owns a plot of land that includes a part of the river that is used as a trade route. A family castle oversees said river and a small town provides docks and other services to merchants and sailors.
Wife of the Kir d'Nari, Eloen, is an elven maiden, daughter of an Earl, but her family was much less fortunate with their wealth, so this union occured. Surprisignly, after few years both Kir and Ekke came to love each other and slowly their family started to grow.
Firstborn, Ruan, is currently at the age of 23 and is groomed to become an heir to his father. He also never forgets to remind everyone about this part. Politics and finances are his bread and butter. Not that anyone else is fighting him over them.
About four years after Ruan, Eloen gave birth to a boy that was named Lyss'amir.
One year later the twins, Caeda (girl) and Jerdar (not a girl), arrived. From the very young age Caeda embrassed her role of young noble daughter and begun training ... to be a wife. She did make some aggreements to her father about the future spouse, but the details are between them. Jerdar awakened arcane talent at age of five and was sent to a Magic School to learn the art.
All this brings us to the protagonist - Lyss'amir, or just "Lys" (pronounced as /lɪs/ as in "miss") for his friends. That boy was a troublemaker and trouble-seeker from the very begining. He spent a lot of his time in the port-town and got into all kinds of trouble with boys he was specificaly prohibited to socialize with. Between those activities amd getting punished for them, Lyss was taught some basic knowledge and skilll "appropriate for a noble". He was smart. And many teachers even called him "tallented". But just not very interested in "all that boring crap".
One evening, when Lyss was 15, he stumbled upon a body of a halfling. Covered in bruises and blood. That happened in the "Twilight District", the dark part of the town, so this wasn't something unusual. And Lyss might've just passed along if only he didn't hear a faint moan. Not going into the details, Lyss saved the halfling. Idozor, that was his name, was a thief. A very good one. But he crossed wrong people. And payed for it. All his fingers were broken, preventing him to use his craft. Lyss took Idozor as his retinue as halfling svered his loyalty for saving his life. Idozor became Lyss's manservant and even passed some of his skills to the young man.
Second retinue he hired at the age of 17. Half-orc Kelta is a good cook and quite good at keeping Lyss's clothes and appartments clean. She is in her 30s and Lyss bought her out from the debt. So she's working it out now and has about eight more years ahead of her. But she isn't treated pourly.
Last retainer is gnome boy Nurwut, only ten years old. He is a young brother of one of Lyss's childhood buddies whose whole family died from sickness. Lyss took him as a paige.
Whole King's Guard was idea of a baron, Lyss's father. Right now he's arrived to the summons and probably staying at some inn with his retinues.
