Character Creation

Aug 13, 2018 12:23 am
Hello, and welcome. I've run this campaign several times—it's great fun, but it's really hard. There are a lot of battles in here that are designed to kill you dead. This campaign definitely favors players who relish a challenge, but there's also a HUGE amount of opportunity for great role play.

Material Allowed:
You may use any Paizo material from the d20PFSRD. As long as I can look it up on that site, and it's not 3rd-party material, you're good to go. Play what's fun for you. HOWEVER! This campaign is set in Greyhawk, so you'll be using the Greyhawk pantheon and cultures instead of the ones from Pathfinder. I will be adding a post in the Character Knowledge section about prominent deities in the region shortly. See below.

Local Deities:
There are four established temples in Cauldron—St. Cuthbert, Pelor, Kord, and Wee Jas. There is a shrine to Fharlanghn, the god of travel at the Lucky Monkey. Additional shrines to Pelor, Wee Jas, Moradin, Yondalla, and Garl Glittergold can be found in the outlying towns and villages. Here are the domains associated with each of the common deities:

https://image.ibb.co/hiy2Fp/deities.png

Ability Scores:
Use the standard method (4d6 drop lowest) to generate your ability scores, but roll three (3) sets instead of one. You may choose which of the three sets you will use for your character. Please roll your stats in this thread (ideally in one post to keep things clean), and then let me know which of the three sets you'll be using.

Alignment: No evil alignments, please. I'm not down with that. I like my heroes to be heroic. =)

Starting Gold: Take the average amount of starting gold for your class.

Backgrounds:
The campaign works best if your character is from the Cauldron region. You're not required to do this, but I want to encourage it, so: Any character who hails from one of the towns or villages in the region may have a +1 bonus to any one ability score. List this on your character under Special Abilities as "Local Hero ([Name of Town]) - [Stat Modified]" (example: Local Hero (Hollowsky) – +1 Charisma). You can find a list of the towns in the region, along with a brief description of each, in this thread.

Character Sheets:
I will be creating a shared Google drive folder to store our campaign materials. There will be a spot in there for your character sheets, and a fillable PDF template for you to use. Keeping the character sheets there (and in that format) makes it easier for me to keep track of everyone.

Just to check before I delve deep into character creation, are the Occult Classes on the approved list? I have seen other games where the GM wasn't a fan on those mechanics. I'm not dead-set on any of them, but just want to verify.

So Block 1 is the set I will be using...before racial adjustment I am working with: 16, 16, 15, 14, 12, 12.
That is a nice stat block right there.

Yep. I haven't played with them enough to firm up an opinion either way.

Stat rolls

Looks like I will be going with stat block 3. Base stats before adjustments will be 16, 16, 15, 14, 12, 10.
Better than I have done in the past.

Now that the stats are turning out pretty good, does everyone have an idea as to what class they are looking at?
Aug 13, 2018 10:02 pm
I am bouncing around between several ideas. Witch or Shaman or Wizard are my go to...but honestly I'm open to anything at this point.
Aug 14, 2018 12:30 am
I'm strongly leaning towards an Ifrit sorcerer with the fire elemental bloodline. He'd be from the Cauldron proper, loving the whole "living in the caldera of the dormant volcano as a partial fireblood" idea.
Aug 14, 2018 1:43 am
That is cool!

Not sure if this will help you pick:
There will be a lot of dungeon delving, some urban stuff, a bit of wilderness stuff, and some extraplanar goodness.
Aug 14, 2018 10:55 am
I have never done a TWF character. Thinking Ranger TWF or possibly a TWF Fighter. Suggestions on which? I have almost always played a rogue.
Aug 14, 2018 12:47 pm
Rolled up! Wow, stats are a heck of a lot higher then I'm used to. Hope this doesn't bust up the game, but you did say it was somewhat a meat grinder.

I'll be going with set 1 with 15, 17, 11, 18, 15, 9

-------------------------
Set 1

4d6( 6, 4, 1, 5 ) = 16

4d6( 1, 6, 6, 5 ) = 18

4d6( 5, 2, 2, 4 ) = 13

4d6( 6, 6, 6, 5 ) = 23

4d6( 6, 4, 4, 5 ) = 19

4d6( 2, 1, 6, 1 ) = 10
-------------------------
Set 2

4d6( 6, 2, 2, 4 ) = 14

4d6( 6, 5, 1, 4 ) = 16

4d6( 6, 5, 3, 1 ) = 15

4d6( 1, 6, 6, 2 ) = 15

4d6( 5, 3, 1, 3 ) = 12

4d6( 3, 2, 1, 5 ) = 11
------------------------
Set 3
4d6( 5, 4, 5, 4 ) = 18

4d6( 6, 2, 5, 4 ) = 17

4d6( 4, 5, 1, 2 ) = 12

4d6( 6, 6, 2, 5 ) = 19

4d6( 6, 4, 5, 5 ) = 20

4d6( 2, 2, 6, 3 ) = 13
------------------------

Not sure what to play yet, stuck between Paladin, Priest or War priest

Elveron, I think it might be better to use the fighter than the Ranger. Just looking at what LadyBrash posted " Lots of dungeon delving, a bit of wilderness". Just guessing though.
Aug 14, 2018 2:16 pm
Yeah, I've read that. Going to go tank, probably sword and board to absorb attacks for others. Now deciding between fighter and paladin. We could both go paled in and play it differently.

For sure, were you just going to go in as a stock Paladin or looking at some archetypes? Was going to try a Pally with the "Warrior of the holy light" archetype. Also looking at a stock Cleric of Pelor.
Aug 14, 2018 5:09 pm
OK...so after too much thought I am going to got nuts and play...a specialist wizard. I know, at first glance it doesn't seem like that big of a reveal...however...pending GM approval...I would like to build a Familiar Adept Foresight (Divination) Specialist. This character's motto is "Forewarned is forearmed." Always doing her best to know what is coming so the party can be prepared.
Aug 14, 2018 5:37 pm
How do we handle starting HP and gold? Rolling random?
Aug 14, 2018 5:57 pm
I'm going stock pally. Actually looking at dwarf paladin. Might be a challenge but, should be fun.
Aug 14, 2018 5:57 pm
In Pathfinder its usually assumed first level is max hp, gold is up to the GM.
