OOC:
Thank you for reminding me!
Jenya addresses Toe. "I don't know much about the mining operations in this area, so I can't say for certain, but no. I don't think there are any mines that delve directly into this mountain. Most that I know of are in the foothills near the outlying villages."

LadyBrash says:
OOC:
No, the face paint did not have any religious significance that you can think of. It's vaguely reminiscent of the two-face Erythnul, god of slaughter, but only vaguely. You are certain that's not what the paint was symbolizing. So you two are headed where? To the temple of Pelor?
OOC:
Yep, but its more or less just a quick in and out moment for me to get gear. It doesn't need to be roleplayed unless you have an interesting encounter planned. If you do decide to, I'm essentially an on-duty nurse checking patients to make sure they're comfortable and to change bandages. Then go gather my personal things, maybe chat up Dracone on some personal stuff.

But for the sake of time, we can skip it.

Fhenryl edges closer to Toe, but his eyes are set on Kija and Jaqir. He still seems ill-at ease, enclosed indoors with so many strangers, but makes an effort to stay set on their task.
"Two-swords," he adresses the halfling with his gruff, sandpapered tone, "the witch and the warlock must surely have some magic they can use to see if anyone tempered with this place. You ask them !" he adds stiffly, for some reason unwilling to get too near any of the two casters.

"My brother was being pursued and now he's disappeared. He talked about cages. There are other people who were taken, like he was. There is information to be gained from them." he declares, as he waits for an answer from the assembly.

Toe looks up at Fhenryl with a smile, "Patience my dour-faced friend." He follows this with a feigned gravity in his voice, "Rushing things only invites error, and in situations such as this, a single error could mean life or death! We especially do not want to provoke the conspirators wantonly and without strategic necessity."

"Besides, though Lady Kija seems to possess quite capable intellect - and a self-professed diviner, if she had the relevant information to share or ability to divine them now, I'd imagine she would already have shared them. As for sir Jaqir, his domain of specialty seems to be more of the incineration kind than divination."

Addressing Fhenryl directly, "Indeed, if there was anything I could do now, I would not hesitate to try. As it stands, I am not that powerful of a wizard. My spells can't reveal that much. Even going to the orphanage is unlikely to yield much information via magic, but we should still try. I think we should let the children sleep, we can look for clues in the morning."

Turning back to Toe she offers a smile of thanks.

OOC:
I'm going to move the story forward at this point. If any of you want/need to do anything during the evening, you can point that out in your post.
The group decides to meet early the next morning near the Lantern Street Orphanage, located on the corner of Lantern Street and Lava Avenue NE.

When you arrive, you see a two-story stone building with a thick oak door flanked on either side by glass lanterns. There's a green cooper knocker that looks like a smiling gargoyle face with a ring running through its septum like a piercing. Looking up at the building from the front, you notice that all the windows on both stories are tightly shuttered.

Standing before the building with the group, Rand is now outfitted with his scale mail and heavy wooden shield. Carrying a quiver of 4 javelins at his back. His sun holy symbol hanging prominently from his neck.

" Yes, well this rightly looks ripped from a nightmare."

Closes his eyes immediately in forgiveness.

" Sorry Jaqir, so now that we're here whats the plan then?"

Toe looks around the party, "Well, one of us should make use of that knocker and get the attention of someone inside. I'd volunteer but alas they're position a bit high for a halfling." With a playful grumble he adds "Sadly almost nothing in this city is designed with due consideration to halflings."
OOC:
I'll assume Toe left Korvet at a stable near by or if there is none, then left him back at the Temple.

"I'd offer you a boost master halfling, if that would be no an insult to your dignity, or an inefficient use of our time. Instead, I will bravely step forward and knock for us." With a smile and slight bow to Toe, Kija steps forward and uses the knocker to announce the parties arrival.

"I don't know about 'nightmare', it's a grim visage to be sure, but they suffered a tragedy. The shutters being closed is only right, and as a charity, they take what they are given. They probably didn't build this house."
Aug 24, 2018 5:21 pm
Toe smiles and tips his hat towards Kija.

"I am honored by your considerate words, Lady Kija. But, my dignity isn't so fragile as to be broken by a mere boost from a woman of such grace and virtue."

He continues to wait for an answer inside the orphanage, while casually examining the knocker and the barred windows.
OOC:
Oops. Add +4 to the perception roll (he has rank and also is a class skill). So the roll should be 10.

The ranger is looking quizzically at the building, then back at Jaqir, standing next to him. He seems to be making an effort to overcome his reticence in dealing with witches and sorcerers, and he soon asks his red-skinned companion:

"They keep children enclosed in places such as these ?"

The woodsman seems flabbergasted by the thought. How could anyone thrive while growing up in a place without light, without trees?

LadyBrash sent a note to Dramasailor
OOC:
Toe, your inspection of the windows and knocker doesn't provide any clues. The shutters are locked from the inside, and none of them appear to have been tampered with. The intruder couldn't have come in through a window. The knocker is perfectly ordinary, though a bit weathered.

OOC:
Hi LadyBrash, I asked for a small change to my character, if permitted, in the Character Creation thread. Just making sure you don't miss it!

It's been almost ten years since I left, when I was twelve years old. I would think our first step is to see if the headmistress is in. She was - well - we weren't always on the best of terms, but she treated me better than any other adult had before her. he shakes his head as they wait for a response to the knock.

Yes Fhenryl, when there are children without parents to watch them or a tribe to call them theirs, institutions like this give them a roof and meals and a place to sleep. It isn't perfect, not by any stretch. But As bad as some of the times were, it was better than I'd have been able to do on the street alone. It was really the only home I knew before I left because I'd gotten 'too old' to suffer their instructions. Jaqir says, fingers drawing the quotations around too old in the air. I could have possibly stayed, but I was a bit - ah - hot headed?

Fhen grunts in response to the Fire Sorcerer's explanations, nodding as he takes it all in. He then turns towards the door and as it remains closed he mumbles impatiently: "I will have a look around...", before proceeding to scan the area around the facade and the sides of the house, looking for tracks or any indices of passage.
OOC:
not sure if there are side-streets to the building, but he will do his best to detect anything that may raise his suspicions, bits of torn cloth, unusual objects, markings, anything pointing towards out-of-the-ordinary activity or indicating a human or a humanoid presence around the house recently... making 2 rolls, one for tracking, one for perception, not sure which one applies best in that case.

Fhenryl, different cultures different circumstances. Places like these are a necessary evil per say. While no one really wants to close children up, these children may not live long is they weren't. All these children have something in common and by living together can help support one another. While I would like nothing better than to see families all take at least one child, the reality is, there isn't enough food or money for that to happen. Most families just make do with what they have. As for the building, it is one way to keep them together and safe....well, suppose to keep them safe. These children have been through enough then to also have the threat of kidnapping thrust upon them.

Dracone looks away then, holding back the tear he knows is coming. He dislikes when things happen to those already suffering. To hide his emotions, he turns to watch behind them to ensure they aren't being watched.

OOC:
Fhenryl and Dracone, you are both confident that the area is secure. There are many footprints in the dirt around the house, many obviously from children but some from adults. You don't see any that are suspicious, though.
LadyBrash sent a note to Dramasailor
Kija knocks on the door using the heavy copper knocker. A moment later, the door opens a crack and a tiny woman peers out. Her eyes narrow with suspicion as she scans the crowd. "Who are you? Who sent you?" an elderly voice demands while the eyes continue to look everyone over. When they spot Jaqir, the eyes open wide and fill with warmth. The door swings open, revealing an aged halfling woman with her gray hair up in a messy bun. She says with a smile, "Jaqir! Oh my how you've grown. It's so good to see you. Are these your friends? Do come in and tell me what you've been up to." She holds the door open, and everyone files inside, Jaqir leading the way.

Your red-skinned companion leads you through a dimly lit main hall (you can see a staircase leading up to the second floor) and into a comfortably furnished and well-used sitting room. The halfling woman follows you in and takes a seat in an overstuffed chair much too large for her. With her feet dangling almost a foot off the ground, she asks, "What brings you to the orphanage so early in the morning?"
Aug 25, 2018 3:45 pm
OOC:
While waiting for Jaqir to respond to the halfling woman, I would just like to take a quick look around the room and when we were traveling the halls to see if anything maybe out of place? Also if there is a shuddered window in the meeting room I'd like to open it.

Heya Gretchen, it's good to see you too! We are acquaintances of need for the moment, though all are good people. The head priestess at the temple of St. Cuthbert actually asked if we could help look into the kidnappings. We all came upon a pair of painted men beating up a cleric last night and to a one we stepped up to keep the man whole. I know the kinds of things that would entice kids away and wanted to see if I could help, after all the help you gave me. he says, smiling warmly at her.

Plus, I was hoping Patch would be around. It's been too long since I've been back. It would do me good to say hi if I could?
