Alert: A new issue of the Cauldron Herald has just come out. Get yours today!.
OOC:
You each have set out on some minor errand this evening. As our story begins, you are walking along Magma Avenue NE...
A wretched drizzle falls from the ash gray sky. The rain-slicked buildings seem especially bleak and frightful, hunched together against the storm. A few lights burn in their windows, but mostly the shutters have been closed for the night. The scent of chimney smoke fills the air, and the din of water trundles from the rooftops, splashing into dark alleys and turning street gutters into tiny rivulets.

It's not as late as it looks. The clouds blocking out the moon along with the chill of the rain makes it seem as if it were nearly midnight when, it is only just past supper-time. You have passed others on your walk as well, some hurrying home to their families, others stumbling after a nightcap at the tavern.

You make a turn down one of Cauldron's many side-streets, and the crowd thins. There are a few other people you can see walking through here. A shiver runs down your spine—you want to hurry on and get back to a main street. The hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, and you jump as you hear a sudden cry from a nearby alleyway—"HELP! Somebody help!"—followed by angry cursing and a pained grunt. Your heart is pounding, but something in you compels you to investigate. You notice the others near you on the street move in as well.

Together, you arrive at the end of the alley and look in to see three men with faces painted half black and half white attacking a young man dressed in cleric's robes and wearing the symbol of St. Cuthbert around his neck. The cleric lies face down on the wet cobblestones. The three attackers kick him in the ribs a few times, then one lifts him up by the hook of his cloak and thrusts him against a wall as another other growls, "Stay away from the orphanage, you got that?" and punches him hard in the stomach.

In your post, let us know what brought you out on this less-than-glorious evening (it should probably not be something so terribly important that it can't be interrupted), as well as how you respond to what you see in the alley.

Spending an evening eating a warm meal in one of the local taverns, after a long day at the church of Pelor. The number of wounded seems to be growing more by the day, not to mention those in distress of spiritual guidance. Making his way home a little tipsy he hears the call for help.

He approaches with great hast. Holding his cloak closed with one hand and a firm grip on his mace with the other he calls out to the aggressors. "Stop!"

Toe rubs his sore jaw as he turns down the side street on his trusted steed, Korvet - a crimson coated pony. He probably shouldn't have serenaded that married woman at the tavern... in front of her husband no less.

"Perfectly dreary weather for perfectly dreary day. Where next my boy?" He asked as he gently patted Korvet's wet coat. As the pony neighs in reply Toe hears the cry for help, "Well, that's an answer I suppose." He quickly steers his steed on to the alley and witness the scene.

He almost falls off his steed as he is jolted by a sudden loud yell of "Stop!" right near him. He sees another man of the cloth, but this one of Pelor, hastily walking to the scene. Toe gets off the pony and walks next to the cleric.

"Greetings gentlemen. If I may give just a few constructive criticism on how you conduct your... affairs. It seems that just one of you could have taken on this poor acolyte. But, three men against this one hapless lad. That's just inefficiency. It also doesn't seem to be in the spirit of fairness does it? Not that gentlemen of your disposition would care about that sort of thing. And the face paint... my word, that's a bit too much don't you think? I know you're going for intimidation but you just look like painted jesters. Subtlety gentlemen. subtlety is your friend."

Toe unsheaths his rapier and short sword. "So now comes the question. Shall we play a little game of fence? Or will you let that acolyte go?"
OOC:
Toe doesn't have an eye patch, btw. I couldn't find a better picture though.

When they hear the cleric's command, the thugs stop what they're doing and turn to see who's there. Scowling and fingering their swords, they size him up to decide if they should advance on him or not. Then they see Toe.

The little halfling steps forward and confidently delivers his monologue. The thugs watch, eyebrows raised and smirking. They pause for a moment in silence after he finishes, then burst into laughter. Once they catch their breath, the leader steps forward and responds:

"You're absolutely right, little friend. This particular situation (indicating the accosted cleric, whose left eye is now nearly swollen shut and is doubled over clutching his ribs) is quite unfair. You see, in our line of business, it pays to be KEENLY aware of the level of fairness at all times. I work hard to make sure that it's ALWAYS weighted in my favor. As for the face paint... well. That's not for intimidation. That's what these two (motioning to the other two thugs) are for. The makeup is so that you don't recognize me next week while I'm out at the market shopping with my grandma."

"I'm not particularly worried that this green-gilled sunshine priest is going to stop us. If you think you could best us in a fight, little man, you're welcome to try. But my advice would be for you to bugger off before you get hurt."

"You're right, maynwdyr*, let's even-out those odds then !", a gruff, raspy voice announces cooly.

Emerging from the shadows on the opposite side of the alleyway, a hirsute-looking character slowly and deliberately steps out into the scene, the barrel of a grisly-looking, massive crossbow pointing at the thug's chest. Long, matted hair and bristly sidebruns framing a rugged, sunburnt face show him to be from the outside frontier, and his surprisingly pointy ears betray his mixed elven bloodline.

"You should really take one more step, fool. I am dying to pierce your filthy, marauder hide. You go on, then !"

The man's carnivorous smile is absolutely mirthless as his slanted, piercing yellowish eyes are strained on the bandits' every move.

*Maynwdyr: filthy, soiled or brackish water in sylvan speech. By extension, any unsavory or offensive person or behaviour.

Toe let's out a little yelp, startled at the sudden appearance of crossbow bearing half-elf.

Catching his purple plumed hat before it falls from his head, he pleads "Please, if anyone else wants to join in on the fray announce yourself gently first - for my poor heart's sake."

He mutters softly to himself so that no one can hear, "Alright, Alders let's see if your training has practical usage." He takes a deep breath then faces the thugs again smiling widely. He twirls the rapier and the short sword once around his wrist synchronously then asks "So, shall we begin the dance then?"

Jaqir, having been kicked out of his favorite dive bar once again, had been wandering his way through the streets with a thick leather hood pulled up over his curved horns, trying desperately to cover signs of his elemental lineage. Gods-be-damned weather, can't a man have the slightest bit of relief from this drizzle? he mutters to himself as he splashes in puddle after puddle.

At the sound of the priest's clamoring, a frown crosses his lips. JAQIR! You singed my curtains again, you miserable little cretin! the memory of an orphanage matron, moments before the sting of her reed switch crisscrossed his backside. A minor flinch twitches his shoulders as he sets his course for the sounds of someone being set upon. As he draws closer, he notes that several other good citizens have stepped in to voice their displeasure at the thug behavior.

Tsk tsk now. No one likes a bully. Jaqir says, leaving his hood drawn as he steps into the vicinity of the group, though his searing orange-red eyes pierce out from the darkness beneath the leather. Bit of a chilly night, with the rain, isn't it? Perhaps you'd like to warm up. he finishes, letting a broad grin sweep over his face, lit by the dull fire in his eyes.

Kija was thinking about how she wished she didn't live alone, or rather had someone at home who could tend fires. She had Onibaba, but the little bat couldn't do much to make sure there was a nice warm fire waiting for her when she got home at night.

As though the familiar could sense the wizard was thinking about her, the little bat poked its head out from under the hood of her cloak. "Baba, you did a good job keeping the kids occupied while I deciphered those texts for Meirta. Rumor is she is planning to send an expedition out next spring. i'd like to be included in that venture if possible. It should be exciting."

Hearing the call for help, Kija slips the cane off her belt and hefts it, ready to attack if need be. When she turns the corner she skids to a hault behind the group of gathered men. Seeing the priest on the ground and the thugs engaged by the others she hesitates. Whispering to Onibaba she says, "Well. Looks as though things might be handled without us. Still, could get interesting."

For the remaining two characters -- Even if you're not going to take action in this scenario, please still post to let me know why your character was out and about and that they have arrived. Once I hear from the last two, we'll resolve the scene and move forward. We'll keep up the same kind of routine throughout the game.

If we don't hear from the others tomorrow, then we'll move on and incorporate their characters later. I'll hold to the 1 post per day guideline. If you're going to be out, please leave a post letting us know that, for how long, and how I can expect your character to proceed while you're gone, so that we can keep the story moving forward.

Dracone was becoming bored at the Inn. The stories coming out of the drunks becoming more and more embellished as the minutes passed. What started out as a fist fight had somehow led into an all out war won by the person telling it. The weather outside wasn't toogreat but, Dracone needed to get out and get some fresh air. As he was walking, he kept thinking of his duties and how he could find a way to expand his knowledge and experience when suddenly there was a cry for help.

I'm sorry Gentlemen but, as a protector of the Church of St. Cuthbert, I take your assault on my fellow man as a personal insult.
I believe you owe him and apology.

Dracone will move forward to help the acolyte all the while keeping his hand on his weapon at all times.
Aug 21, 2018 2:09 am
The battered and bruised young cleric looks relieved to see everyone step up to his aid, and when he sees Dracone his eyes begin to glisten and you see him clench his jaw to hold back the emotion.

The lead thug counts under his breath — one, two, three, four, five, six — his eyes growing wider and more doubtful with each one of you he sees. He says, with a note of anger and embarrassment in his voice, "Well boys, it looks like we're done here. We got our message across. You can have the priest. Let's get outta here." They back away from the priest and begin to make their way out of the alley.

Dracone moves forward to help the injured cleric to his feet. It looks like he may have one or two broken ribs, and his eyes are so swollen that he won't be able to see to walk himself back to the temple. "Thank you for your assistance, everyone. It is truly surprising and humbling to see so many answer my call for help on a night like this. As you all surely know, people in this city aren't always so... neighborly."

He pauses for a moment before continuing. "Would you all mind accompanying me back to the temple? I'm a little shaken up and would feel better with the company. My superior will want to offer her thanks as well, and I have a feeling she may have a job proposition for you."
Aug 21, 2018 3:21 am
Recognizing the man's injuries for what they are, Kija steps forward. "I'll be glad to walk with you and make sure you get home without further issues. I'm sure some of these gentlemen will follow as well. Tell me, what was it they wanted? They said something about staying away from the orphanage? Why would they want you to do that?"
Aug 21, 2018 3:30 am
The cleric shakes his head in confusion and disbelief. "All they said was to stay away from the orphanage, and I was only there to offer counseling if anybody wanted it. They're all afraid after the kidnapping. I don't blame them. I can't imagine why anyone would want to keep us from helping. It doesn't make any sense."
Aug 21, 2018 3:43 am
"That is strange, indeed." Kija agrees offering her arm for support. She follows the men with her eyes trying to commit the details to memory so she might know them later.
OOC:

"Hmm.. a mystery."

Toe sheaths his weapons and walks back to his pony. "What do you say Korvy? Would be more interesting than another night spent at the tavern." He jumps onto Korvet with one smooth motion. "The company would certainly be an improvement." He turns to Kija and gives a wink.

He then looks around the motley crew from his steed. "So, social protocols would dictate we exchange pleasantries and introductions. I will go first." Toe takes off his hat revealing shiny black hair, slicked back. His face is olive-skinned with brown eyes and razor thin mustache, groomed with care. He is overall well put together with fashionable purple vest over white tunic (his leather armor kept underneath both) and a matching purple trousers with black leather boots over it.

"I am Tovuk Tinkerton of Hollowsky, also known simply as Toe. The circumstances of our meeting would suggest you are all honorable folks and as such I am pleased to meet your acquaintances."

" If you let me I can heal your injuries"

Rand steps forward putting his mace away. With both hands stretched out you hear him silently pray to himself, his hand begins to give off a soft glow and warmth like muted sunlight.

"May the warmth of Pelor be with you, Thank you all for coming when you did. Um ... excuse me"

The adrenaline beings to crash on Rand faster than he anticipated. This being the first time he raised his mace to other people. He promptly looks for a side ally feeling his dinner coming back.

After Rand takes the priests arm and supports him, Dracone walks to the end of the alley where the thugs exited, checks the streets to ensure they left and returns.

It looks like our friends have left the area, we should be ok for now. I am Dracone, Paladin of St. Cuthbert, Defender of Law and Protector of the innocent. I hail from Kingfisher Hollow and am currently in Cauldron to familiarize myself with the various churches of my faith. I see now, that my services may be needed in other ways.

Dracone stands about 5'10" with black hair and green eyes. He is clad in Scale mail and carries a heavy wooden shield on his left arm. Sheathed on his left side is a Long sword and tucked into his belt on the right is a flail. While he has a youthful appearance, his eyes show the signs of a hard life.

The whiskered, pointy-eared stranger had lowered his crossbow: warily watching the thugs leave the scene, he stood silent and bristling with something between scorn and simmering anger, a cold, ferocious glint in his gold-colored eyes, who seemed to zero in and follow the direction the thugs were taking as they slipped away, melting into the shadows of the narrow and winding alleyway.

His attention turned back to the group.

He was a rugged, strapping specimen for a half-elf, although a little short in stature for his race, and both his tanned, coppery skin and his thick and somewhat tangled shoulder-length mane of black hair - the hairline growing in a very characteristic "v" shape atop a high, tapering forehead and a slightly jutting brow ridge - marked him as being of wild sylvan blood.
He wore a small ring of what appeared to be some kind of polished bone drilled into the outer side of his left ear, with a few leathery cords and other baubles weaved in his hair, that grew straight back from his forehead and came falling in long, coarse strands between his shoulder-blades. His ears were unusally long and pointy for a half-blood and, besides the small bone earing, they bore a few chinks and the scars of what could have been either teeth marks or tribal branding.
He was dressed in regular hunting gear, mostly buckskins and supple leather leggings and thick, knee-high elven mocassins, and besides the huge crossbow that he now slung over his back, the party could make out a small throwing axe hanging from his belt and what looked like a spiked stone hammer slung on his other hip, both weapons half-hidden in the shadows of a hooded cloak lined with rabbit fur.

Even after the rest of the group had made their introduction, the grim-looking trapper had remained silent for a little while, his lips thin as a knife's edge, his mouth bent in a bitter frown between the long, coarse black whiskers sprouting along both sides of his bony jaw. He now stroked one of these hirsute sideburns pensively, then finally spoke. His raspy, husky baritone sounded like the grating of a rounded stone on an old oak tree, as if he wasn't used to speak very often, and his common had the thick, guttural intonations of sylvan speech.

"I am Fheryn Thuath'An'Anthl, from the people of Llyrth." he looked at each of his new companions in turn, his eyes lingering intently on each and every one of them, as it to take in their features, then his attention turned back on the young battered clergyman. Apparently the presentations had been made, as far as he was concerned.

"Priest !" he almost barked, advancing on the poor cleric still shaken by all the recent man-handling: "You are from the Ones Who Heal, yes ? You meet a younger male, also half-elven as I, a little thinner, dark auburn of crown and dressed in dark velvet, about yay high ?", the hunter made a gesture indicating a size of about 6 feet to the dazed cleric.

"I must... I have to find him." Fhenryl said between clenched teeth. "Yet you speak of kidnapping". Something seemed to dawn on him as his expression suddenly froze. He then swung on the rest of the group. "We should catch the clowns. Ask them ! If they know, they will speak. And if not...".

His smile had frozen in a savage grimace, baring small, white elven teeth. His look had turned feral.

Jaqir moves to follow the pair of thugs before his mind stops him. What connection to Lantern Street do these bastards have? he thinks. WIth a turn he pivots back to the group. As he speaks, he draws his hood off, revealing his messy mop of ebon-black hair and bright red skin.

Well met all of you. I am Jaqir, known denizen of Cauldron and frequenter of bars the crater around. It would be good to speak to the other Cuthberites. I grew up in the orphanage those vile men were speaking of and it causes me great pain to think that any would think they speak for the facility. I had my issues there, we all did, but assaulting a priest is not the right way to express concern. I read about the kidnappings this morning priest. I am thankful you are there to counsel the littles, it's something missing in their lives almost assuredly. he bows deeply towards the group. You may call me Jaq, Jaqir, or Huhu as you'd like, I'll answer to nearly all of it.
Aug 21, 2018 2:47 pm
OOC:
Rand, you are familiar with the cleric only in passing. You have seen him around Cauldron's religious community. The paladin as well. The region is small, and most people within certain groups know, or are at least acquainted with, one another.
The cleric is taken aback by the intensity of the half-elf, still shaken and nervous after his ordeal. "I have not, I apologize. You may be able to get answers from Jenya. Come, I'll introduce you." He leads the way to the Church of St. Cuthbert, introducing himself as Rufus and telling a bit of his life story along the way.

A short walk later, you arrive at the north end of Obsidian avenue in front of the Church of St. Cuthbert. It is a two-story building with walls crafted of white marble suffused with veins of vivid blue. It stands in stark contrast to the buildings of black volcanic stone that surround it. A pair of statues, also crafted from white marble, stands on either side of the temple's heavy oaken door. The statues are armored warriors, each raising a mace to the sky. The door itself is topped with an inscription: "WITHIN LAW LIVES HOPE"

Rufus opens the door and invites you inside. He leads you through the main worship hall to a sitting room on the side, and instructs one of the acolytes to set a fire for you. "Please wait here a moment. I'm going to go get Jenya." While you are waiting, the acolyte brings in dry blankets and asks if any of you would like some tea.
Aug 21, 2018 3:09 pm
Giving a quick but nervous smile.

" Yes I would love a tea, thank you"

Rand takes his cloak off to hang it on a hook if available to dry.

You now see Rand as a 5'8" human topped with red hair and a well-groomed beard which contrasts rather well with his steel grey eyes and fair tanned skin. He does have a somewhat imposing figure keeping himself well fit (Pelor does have the strength domain after all).

Looking towards Jaqir

" I sorry Jaqir but ah ..."

Rand looks towards the empty fireplace, the acolyte taking his time it seems.

Toe refuses the offer of tea. He sits idly for a while twirling his dagger around his fingers. Then sits up.

"So the kidnappings.... It must be related to the attack on the young priest. Too much of a coincidence.".

He then turns to Jaqir, "You mentioned issues you had with the orphanage. What did you mean by that?"
Aug 21, 2018 4:53 pm
"I've been contemplating the words of the assailants. Warning the priest to stay away from the orphanage leads me to believe they intend to go back. They are...somehow...involved in the kidnapping, and by that I mean perpetrating it. The only other option is that they believed the priest was. And if that were the case, they would have accused him there and then I should think. We, the gathered audience, would have listened to their side if it had been in the pursuit of justice...so their guilt int he matter is...the only logical conclusion. Now I am cross with myself that we did not detain them." Kija rambles through these thoughts speaking both to the room at large and to no one specifically. Suddenly she looks up as though remembering she isn't alone.

"Sorry, I was lost in my own mind for a moment. We were exchanging names? Kija Fen. Wizard, specializing in divination and portents."
Aug 21, 2018 5:07 pm
Jaqir smiles and moves towards the acolyte. Here, allow me to use some of my essence to give a bit of spark to it. he says happily, moving his hand in a small little circle ending with a snap of the fingers. Instantly, the pile of tinder and kindling in the fireplace flares into a small fire.

Now, just feed it normally. he says, winking at the acolyte.

Jaqir takes a large breath, as if he were going to launch into an explanation, but then stops. Were you ever orphaned or alone as a child Toe?
Aug 21, 2018 6:02 pm
Toe's usual confident persona recedes for a brief moment at that question. With an uncharacteristically demurred voice he mutters "No." Then with a familiar smirk, "Anyway, I believe Lady Kija is on to something. There is only two possible conclusions - if we assume the assault is related to the kidnappings - and one of those conclusions doesn't make much sense. I recall in today's herald, this very church gave public support to the investigation of the kidnappings. This assault could be a response to that declaration."
Aug 21, 2018 6:36 pm
Dracone walks with the others to the Church, while walking, he keeps an eye out for any thugs and his hands close to his weapons. Upon entering, Dracone drops to one knee and says a short prayer upon entering, then raises up and enters. As the Acolyte enters and offers blankets, Dracone accepts one and the offer for tea.

I thank you for the hospitality, blanket and Tea. I don't believe for a moment that any member of this Church would stoop so low as to be apart of such a scandalous scheme. As Toe has said, the Church supports the investigation and that is likely the reason for the attack. They do not wish for anyone looking around or finding any clues. Kidnappings from orphanages usually have ties to slavers which means those children are in trouble. I for one say we should investigate and help them.
Aug 21, 2018 7:01 pm
"Well, not to delve to deep into speculation, but IF one were to commit a crime like this, it might be a good way to throw off suspicion if one were the first and/or loudest in condemning it. However, it is the least likely of conclusions. I mean innocent people don't go around with face paint to mask their identities."
Aug 21, 2018 7:58 pm
"We're wasting time !", Fhenryl growled.

He was standing right next to the door, his body tense and looking obviously ill-at-ease within the massive marble structure of St Cuthbert's temple, what with the thick tapestries, the heavy candelabras, robed people walking around in hushed tones, and the sickening smell of incense... in fact the woodsman seemed like he was dying to spring out of the room at any moment, back onto the cobbled streets slick with rain. He gave the proffered tea a dismissive look. "The witch is right: the painted clowns are guilty and they must pay. We should have stomped the truth outta them there and then... but we let them get away to accompany a crippled priest, and now we're standing around doing fancy prattle while they're probably preparing to take more innocent people. Taking children...!". He spat disdainfully. "My brother. They have him, I can sense it."

His fists shaking and his face livid with barely contained rage, he concluded grimly: "I am going to track them down. I am going to find them. And if they did anything to Sdion, by all the ancient forest gods, I'm going to kill every last one of them."

The surly half-elf remained tense, but that last prophetic outburst seemed to have calmed his nerves somewhat. He seemed to snap back to his senses and suddenly walked up to the young novice carrying the tea tray, grabbed a cup of the scalding herbal beverage and downed it in one long gulp, barely taking the time to wipe his mouth with the back of his sleeve before grabbing another of the steaming cups, and proceed to sip at it a tad more leisurely, his eyes now slowly scanning around the room, as if taking the time to finally take the scenery in.

What is the best way to eliminate an encroaching ant colony? Do you squish the one or two you see taking sugar, or do you let them go back to their hill so you find the mound, where you seek out the queen and burn it all to the ground? Jaqir says, while a small wisp of smoke starts to curl up from his nostrils.

You are right that I think they are guilty, and they must pay. But my fury burns to see the entire group punished. Do not lose sight of that. These drones will suffer penance in due time. he goes on to say, a wicked smile curling his lips up. Gathering some information now and being blessed with a bit of legal authority makes our task that much easier Fhenryl.

A woman enters the room. She is petite, around 5'4" tall, and has curly brown hair which she has kept back out of her eyes with neat braids. She looks relatively young, but the streaks of gray in her hair belie her age. She wears a brown robe with golden trim, cinched up around her narrow waist with a gold-colored rope. A holy symbol of St. Cuthbert hangs around her neck on a chain.

"Good evening, everyone. My name is Jenya Urikas. Thank you for coming to the aid of my friend Rufus this evening. I find it absolutely appalling that anyone would attack a cleric under any circumstances, but this instance is particularly disturbing. We need more people like you in this city, that's for sure. I've brought a small gift for each of you as a token of our thanks, but before I give it to you, I have a proposition."

She pours herself a cup of tea and begins to explain. "Rufus explained to me that his attackers seemed to be determined to frighten us away from investigating the kidnappings at the orphanage. I can promise you they've failed at that. The Church of St. Cuthbert has publicly vowed to track down the kidnappers, and we will not relent."

"We have a sacred relic here in the Church vaults—the Star of Justice—which has divinatory powers. I used it this past evening to ask the question, 'Where are the children who were abducted from the Lantern Street Orphanage?' I got a response, but I haven't yet been able to make out what it means."

She hands a small slip of paper to the person sitting nearest to her, who reads it and passes it around to everyone else.
[ +- ] Jenya's Response
As soon as everyone has seen the note, she continues.

"We don't have the manpower to conduct a thorough investigation ourselves, especially in light of tonight's attack. I need a team to go investigate. I need you. Cauldron needs you."

She pauses for a moment to measure how her words have impacted you, and then follows up with the reward. "The reward would be 2,500 gold pieces. Your deliverable is the children—alive. Of course, if you find any of the other missing townsfolk, you'll bring them back as well. Do you accept?"
Aug 21, 2018 9:50 pm
Toe lets out a whistle. "2,500 gold pieces, that's quite the enticing bounty. Of course, no honorable person would be solely motivated by financial gain but, it doesn't hurt your cause. You have my swords sister."

Toe peruses the piece of paper.

"'Below the cauldron' seems obvious. We may be going underground - down the crater perhaps. "Where precious life is bought with gold." Sir Dracone, it seems you're correct about it being slavers. Rest of it, your guess is as good as mine." He hands the paper to the next in line.
OOC:
Just realized the crater is a huge lake.

The ranger looks quickly at the piece of parchment, before passing it to whoever wants to read it next. He seems nonplussed, as expected, but throws a quick look at the halfling swordsman, dryly saying: "Traps. Must be traps... doors with teeth."

Then his gaze falls on the woman standing in front of them: "Sister...", he says softly, and a little awkwardly, "I would have a word, please... My brother, Sdion, has been missing for some days. Your... people, they tend to the wounded yes ? I need to know: did he come this way? He has been missing. For almost a week. So I went through this crater-town and turned the taverns and all kinds of scum-dens upside down, trying to find signs of him, but no-one has seen him. He seems to have just... gone. If he came here, I need to know it !"...then he seems to pause a moment and adds, visibly with effort: "If it... would please you to help me, Sister. I will owe you."

Trying hard to control his obvious distress, he proceeds to describe his younger sibling as well as he can. His face is suffused with worry as he awaits Sister Jenya's answer.

Dracone takes the note and reads it over. He understands the words but, lacks the wisdom and experience to make the words tell him what is going on. While the hint of gold does support his guess at slavery, the clues as to where to go leave leaves him with now idea.

"My Holy Sister, as a Defender of the Church, you had but ask of me to set upon this quest. I have sworn my life to protect the innocent and uphold the law to oppress the tyranny of others. While no reward is required, the offer you have made will assist me in helping those in need and I will not use the gold for greed but, to pursue justice against those who wish to impose their evil ways upon others. In the name of St. Cuthbert, I Dracone will set out upon this quest and bring to justice those who have defiled the innocent and free those innocents so they may return to their homes and families. I pledge my life to this quest.

Taking the note Rand reads it over quickly

" Not sure how much help I could be, but I think an investigation may help with both of our interests. It's not publicly known but our church has been missing our three highest ranking priests, one of which is my mentor. "

Rand uncomfortable shifts slightly.

"I will offer my cleric services as aid but not for any coin. To conquer this great evil will be its own reward. But what would kidnappers want with 3 master Sun priests?"

"Hard to say, Rand. The first thing that comes to my mind is they want them for the same services you are offering us...healing magic. Where these three known for having a great amount of skill?"

She pauses for a moment biting her bottom lip, "And, apologies if this next question is to indelicate, but...are you positive they were taken against their will? I only ask so that we can clear any doubts. I mean, IF there is the possibility they went willingly, to perhaps take leadership positions in the slaver group...well...we need to rule that out if we can. No one is truly above suspicion until we know they are. Where they seen being taken? Or where there signs of a struggle?"
Aug 22, 2018 5:37 pm
"If I may interject with a minor suggestion - perhaps it is too early in our investigation to offer a conclusion. Can we even say they were specifically targeted? Could they be targets of convenience? Were the orphans taken from the orphanage or in public space? Same question regarding the missing priests. Why don't we begin by visiting the scene of the crime - assuming this is known? See if there's anything amiss?

Sister, what information can you provide us about the kidnappings? Same to you brother Rand."

" Well, they were taken with no signs of a struggle and all were missing around the same time. I suppose there isn't anything credible to say they aren't involved. But I've known these people, were even raised by them I can't believe they would have a hand in this but logically I can't rule it out either "

Rand raises his right hand to his temple with a soft sigh.

"Kija to answer your question, yes all were masters of either healing miracles or medicine. However, they also mastered miracles of sunlight as well, divine power good against undead or anything weak to daylight"

Rand seems to come to a realization.

" I remember that one of the face painted bandits mentioned me as a 'green-gilled sunshine priest'. I was promoted to Alcolyte only a couple days ago, since the disappearances. It could have been a trivial taunt but maybe not .... "

Looking at Jenya

"Lady Urikas, has anyone from your church turned up missing as well?"

Jaqir happily accepts a tea and revels in the smooth scent of the beverage, sipping it softly as he watches the others talk about the possibilities for the culprits.

It is certainly too early to make a judgment regardless. Do any of you that spend more time in study of religious groups or local groups recognize the face paint they wore? That could help to guide us in where our next questions should be. he says in between sips. And Toe, I only ask because being in an orphanage is a - struggle - to put it lightly. You've likely noticed I'm a little stranger than the norm. It didn't help make my parents love me and it didn't help the matron there at the time treat me nicely. I singed countless drapes and papers before I learned better how to control my inborn power, but the emotional damage was done. I know many of the orphans I grew up with could have been lured away from that life with the promise of no more than an extra bowl of soup and a place to call home. Without finding them to ask, we won't know how they are being taken in order to watch for other issues.
Aug 22, 2018 8:40 pm
Toe turns to Jaqir.

"You may have misunderstood me. If I seemed a bit... flustered by your inquiry, it wasn't anything to do with experience of an orphan. I do not doubt your circumstances were less than ideal. It's that your question brought to mind... someone..., whom I haven't seen in year and it conjured up wistful feelings in me. I wish to leave it at that. My apologies." With that Toe bow slightly toward Jaqir.

"I'm sorry to bring it up, it's just my nature to try and see a situation from every possible angle. It is what draws me to Divination magic, as I learn more I will be able to truths faster."

Kija, there are several mines in the hills and mountains outside of the city, but none within the city proper. Copper is one of the materials mined in the region.
Jenya holds up her hand for a moment to take everything in. "I'll try to answer everyone's questions as best I can."

To Fhenryl she responds, "There are many half-elves in the city, and our clerics perform healings for many people. I do recall seeing someone who looked much like you, though. As I recall, he was distressed—saying something about being followed. He seemed out of sorts. We offered him food and water and asked him if he needed a place to stay, but he insisted that he had to move on before 'they' found him. He couldn't explain in any intelligent way who or what was after him. He said something about a smoking eye and cage builders, but it didn't make any sense. I'm sorry to hear that he has gone missing. Know that we will assist you in any way we can to find him."

She places a hand gently on his forearm to reassure him of her attention and concern while she turns back to the group to address the kidnappings.

"The children were taken from the orphanage itself, at night while everyone was asleep—two boys and two girls. Nobody saw or heard anything, and there were no signs of struggle. What makes it even more fascinating is that the orphanage has bars on all of its windows and locks on all of its doors. The intruder must have been extremely skilled in either lockpicking or magic."

"Nobody from the Church of St. Cuthbert has been taken, thank goodness, but none of us are really safe as long as the kidnappers are out there. I am extremely grateful that you have agreed to take on the quest."
Aug 22, 2018 10:08 pm
Toe cocks his eyeybrow and says, "Locks you say? Perhaps we should check out the orphanage and these locks in particular."

"Also, all mines being located outside the city... 'Look beyond the curtain'... Curtain could mean the malachite city walls. Sister, are there any mines you know of that leads directly underneath Cauldron?"
Aug 22, 2018 10:29 pm
Yes, investigating the Orphanage first does seem like a good idea. I also think we should send out word to all members of St. Cuthberts to always stay in pairs at a minimum. If our Church's desire to have a full investigation has already resulted in threats, we do not know how far they will go. We must ensure everyone's safety. I would suggest we remain here tonight and get a good rest in before we move out.

Fhenryl had listened intently at the Sister's account of her brief meeting with the stranger he had no doubt was his brother. His face tightened with a mix of elation and cool, concentrated focus as he strained to memorize everything she was telling him, in a desperate effort to make sense of these precious few bribes of information.

He did give a small start as she touched his forearm, and for a split second he'd made as if to shy away from this wholly unexpected contact, but soon his eyes lit up with warmth and gratitude, and he'd grabbed the indeed quite startled holy woman of St Cuthbert in a sudden bear hug, stopping short of choking the breath out of her.

After a second, he'd released his grip on the dazzed priestess, taken a half step away from her, and dropped to one knee, while staring at her in a new, intense look, then dramatically pawed at his chest as he pronounced the ritual of the an-a'ndreth*, his voice thick with emotion:

"From all the denizens of this gurgling meatbasket, you and you only offered help and spoke with truth and honor, your provided me with hope like a draught of clear, cool water after I'd toiled in darkness for many a moon. For this I shall give you my help, at this time and at one other time of your choosing."**

As he slowly stood, he kept his eyes on the priestess and as if to answer her intrigued expression, he said, switching back to Common: "The Forest Law commands it: In Kindness Or In Blood, So I Shall Repay... !"

*an-a'ndreth: a very ancient pledge that was of common use in the first elven settlements, either as a gift of service to retribute a good deed or as a blood oath to extract revenge against a perceived crime, the ritual phrase is used nowadays only in exceptional circumstances, but is still practiced and revered by most.

Jenya blinks, surprised, at the half-elf's reaction, and then nods at him politely. "It seems it's settled then," Jenya says with a slight smile. "The quest to recover the kidnapped orphans is underway."

She signals to an acolyte standing nearby, who brings in a tray of vials filled with red liquid and stamped with the symbol of St. Cuthbert. "These healing potions are our way of saying thank you for coming to Rufus's aid. They may come in handy." The acolyte walks the tray around the room, handing one vial to each of you.

"Thank you very much Lady Urikas. I hope we can end this vile plot before it goes any further."

Looking towards Kija.

" Sorry if I sounded cross Kija, don't feel that you need to apologize for your inquisitiveness at least to me. Your questions have merit. In fact, your directness is a nice change of pace from church conversation."

Looking to address Jaqir.

"It true Jaqir we can waste time speculating all night but what we really need are facts and proof. I shouldn't make judgments until we find out more."

Grabbing his cloak from the hook he left it on earlier, he looks to Dracone direction

" An investigation should take place as soon as possible Dracone and I do agree with staying together. However, I do have rounds to make back at the hospital in the temple and I cannot stay but will be back in an hour. You're more than welcome to come with if you feel that a strength in number will stop them. Also these clothes I'm wearing will do very little to stop a dagger in the shadows. Fhenryl edges closer to Toe, but his eyes are set on Kija and Jaqir. He still seems ill-at ease, enclosed indoors with so many strangers, but makes an effort to stay set on their task.
"Two-swords," he adresses the halfling with his gruff, sandpapered tone, "the witch and the warlock must surely have some magic they can use to see if anyone tempered with this place. You ask them !" he adds stiffly, for some reason unwilling to get too near any of the two casters.

"My brother was being pursued and now he's disappeared. He talked about cages. There are other people who were taken, like he was. There is information to be gained from them." he declares, as he waits for an answer from the assembly.
Aug 23, 2018 9:05 pm
Toe looks up at Fhenryl with a smile, "Patience my dour-faced friend." He follows this with a feigned gravity in his voice, "Rushing things only invites error, and in situations such as this, a single error could mean life or death! We especially do not want to provoke the conspirators wantonly and without strategic necessity."

"Besides, though Lady Kija seems to possess quite capable intellect - and a self-professed diviner, if she had the relevant information to share or ability to divine them now, I'd imagine she would already have shared them. As for sir Jaqir, his domain of specialty seems to be more of the incineration kind than divination."

Addressing Fhenryl directly, "Indeed, if there was anything I could do now, I would not hesitate to try. As it stands, I am not that powerful of a wizard. My spells can't reveal that much. Even going to the orphanage is unlikely to yield much information via magic, but we should still try. I think we should let the children sleep, we can look for clues in the morning."

I'm going to move the story forward at this point. If any of you want/need to do anything during the evening, you can point that out in your post.
The group decides to meet early the next morning near the Lantern Street Orphanage, located on the corner of Lantern Street and Lava Avenue NE.

When you arrive, you see a two-story stone building with a thick oak door flanked on either side by glass lanterns. There's a green cooper knocker that looks like a smiling gargoyle face with a ring running through its septum like a piercing. Looking up at the building from the front, you notice that all the windows on both stories are tightly shuttered.
Aug 24, 2018 5:23 am
Standing before the building with the group, Rand is now outfitted with his scale mail and heavy wooden shield. Carrying a quiver of 4 javelins at his back. His sun holy symbol hanging prominently from his neck.

" Yes, well this rightly looks ripped from a nightmare."

Closes his eyes immediately in forgiveness.

" Sorry Jaqir, so now that we're here whats the plan then?"

With a playful grumble he adds "Sadly almost nothing in this city is designed with due consideration to halflings."

"I'd offer you a boost master halfling, if that would be no an insult to your dignity, or an inefficient use of our time. Instead, I will bravely step forward and knock for us." With a smile and slight bow to Toe, Kija steps forward and uses the knocker to announce the parties arrival.

"I don't know about 'nightmare', it's a grim visage to be sure, but they suffered a tragedy. The shutters being closed is only right, and as a charity, they take what they are given. They probably didn't build this house."
Aug 24, 2018 5:21 pm
Toe smiles and tips his hat towards Kija.

"I am honored by your considerate words, Lady Kija. But, my dignity isn't so fragile as to be broken by a mere boost from a woman of such grace and virtue."

He continues to wait for an answer inside the orphanage, while casually examining the knocker and the barred windows.

It's been almost ten years since I left, when I was twelve years old. I would think our first step is to see if the headmistress is in. She was - well - we weren't always on the best of terms, but she treated me better than any other adult had before her. he shakes his head as they wait for a response to the knock.

Yes Fhenryl, when there are children without parents to watch them or a tribe to call them theirs, institutions like this give them a roof and meals and a place to sleep. It isn't perfect, not by any stretch. But As bad as some of the times were, it was better than I'd have been able to do on the street alone. It was really the only home I knew before I left because I'd gotten 'too old' to suffer their instructions. Jaqir says, fingers drawing the quotations around too old in the air. I could have possibly stayed, but I was a bit - ah - hot headed?

Fhenryl, different cultures different circumstances. Places like these are a necessary evil per say. While no one really wants to close children up, these children may not live long is they weren't. All these children have something in common and by living together can help support one another. While I would like nothing better than to see families all take at least one child, the reality is, there isn't enough food or money for that to happen. Most families just make do with what they have. As for the building, it is one way to keep them together and safe....well, suppose to keep them safe. These children have been through enough then to also have the threat of kidnapping thrust upon them.

Dracone looks away then, holding back the tear he knows is coming. He dislikes when things happen to those already suffering. To hide his emotions, he turns to watch behind them to ensure they aren't being watched.

Kija knocks on the door using the heavy copper knocker. A moment later, the door opens a crack and a tiny woman peers out. Her eyes narrow with suspicion as she scans the crowd. "Who are you? Who sent you?" an elderly voice demands while the eyes continue to look everyone over. When they spot Jaqir, the eyes open wide and fill with warmth. The door swings open, revealing an aged halfling woman with her gray hair up in a messy bun. She says with a smile, "Jaqir! Oh my how you've grown. It's so good to see you. Are these your friends? Do come in and tell me what you've been up to." She holds the door open, and everyone files inside, Jaqir leading the way.

Your red-skinned companion leads you through a dimly lit main hall (you can see a staircase leading up to the second floor) and into a comfortably furnished and well-used sitting room. The halfling woman follows you in and takes a seat in an overstuffed chair much too large for her. With her feet dangling almost a foot off the ground, she asks, "What brings you to the orphanage so early in the morning?"

Heya Gretchen, it's good to see you too! We are acquaintances of need for the moment, though all are good people. The head priestess at the temple of St. Cuthbert actually asked if we could help look into the kidnappings. We all came upon a pair of painted men beating up a cleric last night and to a one we stepped up to keep the man whole. I know the kinds of things that would entice kids away and wanted to see if I could help, after all the help you gave me. he says, smiling warmly at her.

You have to open the lever and then open the window to get to the shutter, which is bolted shut with a metal bolt on one side that slides into a hole in the other. It's functioning perfectly, and there is no sign of any damage on this one. There's nothing that seems out of place in the room, or in the entry hall. It's as if nothing had ever happened here.
At mention of the kidnappings, Gretchen's head tilts down to the floor and her tone turns to sadness. "They just disappeared in the night, Jaq. Nobody saw or heard a thing. None of the children so much as stirred, and in the morning they were just gone. Four of them, from right under my nose. I feel as though I failed them." She pauses for a moment as emotion sweeps over her and she tries to hold herself together in front of her guests. She steels her face and says, "It's reassuring that there are so many different people looking for them. The town guard came first thing in the morning when we reported them missing. The next day two men from the Lord Mayor's office came by asking questions, and then yesterday the young man of St. Cuthbert came by. And now you."

She looks at each one of you in turn, peering carefully into your eyes to get a read on your character. Then she says to everyone in the room, "Bring them back. You must find them. They're only children. They've already been through so much."

She stands up, straightens her dress and says, "You have my permission to search the building. My staff will answer any questions you have. You may talk to the children, but please use discretion. Many of them have experienced great trauma, and we try not to exacerbate it." To Jaqir she adds, "Patch is in his room. He is probably only just waking up. He has been staying in the basement. You can get there through the door out back."
Aug 25, 2018 9:54 pm
"Well, Jaqir, I think you should take the lead here, especially in interviewing the orphans as no one here can empathize with them like you can - at least that is my humble suggestion. In the meantime, I'd like to examine the dormitory from whence the kidnapping occurred. Would anyone like to join me? Matron Gretchen, could you point me to the scene of the kidnappings?"

Gretchen explains that the dormitories are upstairs. There's one for the boys and one for the girls. Two children were taken from each room. The boys taken were named Deakon, a dwarf, and Terrem, a human. The girls were named Lucinda and Evelyn, both human. She also explains that before the kidnappings, she would only close the shutters during a storm. The windows were bolted every night. Now, though, the children (and the staff) are too afraid to sleep with them open.

With that Toe walks upstairs with Rand to the dormitories. Toe being eye level to the knobs carefully examines the locks on the doors first.

Toe, though not knowing much about locks, can tell that they're of quite fine craftsmanship. There are no outward indications that they have been tampered with or forced in any way, and seem to be in perfect working order. He can see on the faceplate of each of the locks a tiny stamped "G".

Fhenryl had remained on the edge of the assembled group as was his custom, quietly scanning the room and listening in on the conversation. As the group started to spread out on their various investigative tasks, he came closer to Gretchen and asked in his hoarse, husky tone: "You mentioned a back door and a basement. Do you also have some sort of yard out back? Is it often used ? Whoever broke in may have left tracks there..."

As he waits for the halfling matron´s answer he feels a tinge of curiosity as to who may be living in the basement, but quickly checks himself: this is nothing that directly concerns him, and in any case the Red Man (i.e. Jaqir) would see to that.

Fhenryl spends several minutes carefully investigating the tracks in the wooded park behind the orphanage. He finds the footprints of many children as well as a few adults. To be expected. He also discovers some small hoof prints from an apparently bipedal creature, and on one tree he finds a small carving of an open eye with smoke coming from the top.

Rand comes to the same conclusion as Kija — there are no traces of magic in the dormitories that he can detect.

Dracone, sifting through a pile of documents you find a half-written note thanking Lord Vhalantru for a recent large donation to the orphanage. You also find a coupon for a buy one, get one free dinner at Meat on a Stick on the north side of town.

Fhenryl stiffens as he comes across the mark of the smoking eye: this is what his brother had mentioned to Sister Jenya as he came to St Cuthbert's temple!
He kneels next to the small hoof prints, trying to recall if he came across this type of creature before, his eyes peeled for further tracks that may give an indication as to where the creature came from, or where it was going.

OOC:
Not sure if he needs to do another tracking roll, or if the depth of the tracks in the ground might indicate if the creature was dragging or carrying anything/anyone... also, should I include a knowledge check of some sort to identify the type of creature (do, say, kobolds have hoofed feet in Greyhawk, and would Fhen know about that)?

Fhenryl concentrates as he tries to recall where he saw similar tracks on his forest hunts and wanderings. All the while, the image of his brother comes to haunt him. Sdion mentioned cages: is this smoking eye a secret slavers' cult? What do they do with those they capture? Why was his brother seemingly so agitated, what did he find out that had him so worked up? Who are these hoofed creatures, who sent them ?

His attention goes back to the tracks in front of him...

Nothing much has happened down here, I'm not much on looking for things but, I did find this half written note to a Lord Vhalantru thanking him for a large donation. We found on the locks to the dormitories, a stamped G, which according to Brother Rand is a signature of a local locksmith named Ghelve. Other that that, we unfortunately come empty handed."

Jaqir nods softly at the suggestion. I will check in on Patch first, just to say hi. While my associates search the facility, could you help me find a quiet place to talk with the kids together and then separately Gretchen? I want to make sure they are comfortable when we talk.

Once the talking space is identified
Jaqir heads to Patch's room and knocks softly on the door.
Aug 28, 2018 4:26 am
Fhenryl, distracted by thoughts of the suffering his brother may be going through, can't focus well enough to determine for sure what creatures may have left the tracks. The hoof prints are cloven, like those of a goat or a pig. The only bipedal cloven-hoofed creature he can think of is a satyr, but the likelihood of one being found in the midst of a city this size is nearly nonexistent. The thought is there in his head, but it doesn't seem like it's the right answer. It must have been something else that made those prints.
OOC:
Meanwhile, back in the Hall of Justice...
Gretchen suggests the use of the sitting room to talk to the children. It's familiar and comfortable, and it can become private enough if the doors are closed. Once that's settled, Jaqir heads around back and knocks on the door leading to the basement.

Inside the room, Jaqir hears Patch grumble, roll out of bed, and clump drowsily to the door. The door opens, revealing a half-orc wearing only some tan canvas breeches and an eye patch over his left eye. As the brightness of the morning hits him, he snarls and squints his one good eye severely. "Who is it?" It takes him almost a full minute before he can open his eye far enough to be able to see who it is. "Jaqir? Wow, this is a surprise." He rubs the back of his head with one hand, smiling with embarrassment as he realizes how he must look in nothing but his breeches. "How have you been, my friend? What brings you back to visit?" He waits for a moment for Jaqir to respond, and then his face goes stone sober. "It's the missing kids, isn't it?"
Aug 28, 2018 7:46 pm
"Althan'aan Elethyll'nayth ! May the Seven Devils From The Deep take them all !"

Fhenryl curses under his breath, the normally soft elven speech sounding strangely alien, spoken in the ranger's raspy, rugged tones.

Rubbing his jaw reflectively, he proceeds to make his way back towards the house. Once there, he goes straight to find Gretchen and whoever is still standing in the main room.

"I found something out back. Tracks. Like a small pig, or a goat, but on two legs. Not sure what." he says in a surly tone. "And a symbol carved on a tree... Eye symbol. With smoke coming out of it."
His eyes are set icily into the distance, as if attempting to drill a hole through the wall with the sheer intensity of their stare. His teeth are once again clenched and his razor-thin lips stretch in an angry, mirthless grin.

"A cult. It's a slavers cult, I'm sure of it...!" he hisses, apparently speaking more to himself that addressing anyone in the small room, before adding ominously: "I'll hang their insides to dry like beavers' skins, I swear it by the Old Forest Gods!"

"A smoking eye? That sounds familiar... Come with me." Gretchen leads you back to the school room and pulls out a portfolio labeled "Terrem". While she sifts through the pages, she says, "Terrem is one of the boys who was kidnapped. He's always been a rather gloomy boy, but it's gotten worse in the last few months. Look at this." She pulls out a few drawings and lays them side by side on a table. Each one is either a drawing of an eye with smoking above it (similar to the one Fhenryl found carved on the tree), or an eye with an upward-pointing arrow through the middle.
Aug 29, 2018 12:38 am
"That... is rather creepy, especially for a young boy to be doodling I must say. So, it seems we have a few leads:
1. The locksmith,
2. Lord Vhalantru - who may have influence over the orphanage,
3. Creepy smoking eye symbol that is somehow connected to one of the kidnapped boys.

Now, hopefully sir Jaqir will return to us with something a bit less puzzling and more concrete."

Toe will patiently wait for Jaqir's return after his investigations in the waiting room. In the meantime, Toe will ask Gretchen a few questions.

"Lady Gretchen, what can you tell us about the locksmith who installed the locks in the boys' and girls' dormitories? I believe Ghelve is his name? And, does Lord Vhalantru have free access in and out of this orphanage?"

Aye, it's the missing littles that brought me today. Life has been ok, found some exciting truths about myself since I left. But I've been meanin' to stop by though, to see you. I'm glad you were awake. How've you been old friend? Jaqir says, holding out his hand to hopefully embrace the other man's forearm in greeting.
Aug 29, 2018 5:53 am
Patch takes Jaqir's forearm and gives it a firm squeeze. "I've been good. Trying to keep busy." The two of you make small talk for a few minutes, dancing around the painful topic of the missing children. You can sense that he has something on his mind, and after a while he spits it out. "I feel like it's my fault, Jaq." He sits down on his bed and takes a deep breath before continuing.

"A few months back I met a guy. He's part of this organization, the Last Laugh. A guild of sorts. Anyway, I meet this guy at the bar one night. We get to talking and I mention that I work at the orphanage. He ends up asking me if I can keep an eye on one of the kids — Terrem. He said he could get me into his guild. I could make some real money, get out of this place. It sounded good, so I agreed. What harm could it do to keep an eye on the kid?"

"We met up a few more times, me and this guy. He taught me some stuff—skills I can use to protect the orphanage and later on to make some extra coin. Then Terrem disappeared. I tried to get in touch with the guy, but he's nowhere to be found. I have this sick feeling in my gut that the Last Laugh is in on this somehow, and now I'm part of it. I'm a piece of shit, Jaq. As much as I try, I just can't get away from that. Just whatever you do, don't tell Gretchen, huh? It would break her heart."
Aug 29, 2018 6:00 am
OOC:
For everyone else:
Gretchen puts a hand on her hip and tilts her head up just a bit as she thinks back. "That would be Keygan Ghelve. He's the finest locksmith in the city. I bought all these locks from him back, oh, twenty years or so ago now. Charged me a pretty coin, too. He has a lovely shop off of Lava Avenue on the south side of the city."

"As for Vhalantru, no. I'm the only one with a key to the orphanage. He recently sent us a very generous donation, and has come to visit the children a few times, but he's doesn't hang around much and he's never asked for a key. He's a very charming young man."
Aug 29, 2018 7:09 pm
Kija lets out a small sound. Nothing specific but it communicates a level of displeasure at the matron's words. "Young charming men are not usually prone to giving their wealth to the causes of orphans. Do you know if Vhalantru is married, or has ever lost a child...or a sibling, to tragedy?" She pauses, her eyes go a little vacant for a moment as she ponders another idea quickly. "Does...or did he pay any particular attention to a specific child? Do any of the children remind you of Vhalantru, in a physical capacity? Eye and hair color, facial structure, density of freckles?"
Aug 30, 2018 1:08 am
"That is quite a keen observation Lady Kija, perhaps we can try to arrange an audience with this young charming noble. We also have this Keyvan Ghelve that we can visit. Rather appropriate name that."

He looks around to his companions.

"Once Jaqir is back we should decide on our next course of action. I will abide by whatever the group decides."
Aug 30, 2018 2:57 am
Fhenryl had started pacing back and forth, his brow furrowed in thought and his face slowly turning a nasty purple in his impatience to get on with their search. He finally brought himself to a stop and turned towards Kija and Rand with an exasperated, fuming expression:
"You witch, and you, Sun-servant! You know of no such symbol as the one I described? There must be ancient stories about such things, old tales, mayhaps forgotten prayers...?", he shook his mane of plaited black locks in frustration. "As for the young lordling, leave me a moment alone with him and we shall soon find out if he has anything to hide or shame himself for !", he said to Kija with a feral grin.

The mere mention of beating local aristocracy to a pulp appearing to have calmed his nerves somewhat, the half-elf took a deep breath and raked his fingers through his hair, turned towards the direction Jaqir had taken and concluded: "In any case we must wait for the Red One. He is taking time to come back. Probably this is a good sign, and he will have valuable information to provide."

OOC:
Not sure if anyone else can, or wants to try a knowledge check on that symbol, but may be worth a try... and as far as identifying the tracks, I wouldn't know if anyone had the skill available to try a second look there, as well.

Gretchen seems a bit put off by both Kija's criticism and Fhenryl's aggression. She responds with just a touch of shortness in her tone. "This orphanage is funded entirely by donations from Cauldron's nobility, and Vhalantru is known to be exceptionally generous. It didn't seem strange to me at all that he gave such a sum. He single-handedly funded the renovation of the town hall and lakeside pavilion ten years ago. Rumor has it that he's an orphan himself, but nobody really knows much about his past and he doesn't talk about it publicly. Smart, if you ask me."

"And no, I don't believe he's married or ever has been. He's not the father of any of these children, if that's what you're suggesting."
Aug 30, 2018 12:59 pm
Kija looks abashed as she responds to Gretchen, "My apologies Matron, I did not mean to slander Lord Vhalantru's character. I was attempting to work through all possible options. If, as you say, he is a well known philanthropist and possible an orphan himself, then his conduct is entirely reasonable. I am not judging anyone before facts are known, and I am willing to accept proof of innocence or guilt that is verifiable. We cannot know what we do not know."

Turning to the half elf, her expression settles into a flat unreadable one. "You ranger, when you call me witch...do you use that word out of ignorance or malice? My name is Kija Fen. I am a Wizard. I have spent years training my mind to master the energies that bind this world. Few mortals in this realm have the capacity to do what I can do. A [/i]witch[/i] has sold their soul for paltry gifts of power, where as I have set myself on a path that I will blaze for myself. I am no mere witch and I expect you to adjust your way of thinking."
Aug 30, 2018 1:04 pm
Nah Patch, you aren't a piece of shit at all. I can see how you'd think it might of been your fault, but think on it for a minute. If they had asked you to introduce them to the kid or you had given them keys to the orphanage, it'd be your fault maybe. But Hells below brother, you did what any of us would have. Watched a little for a chance at an honest wage, and you picked up some skills out of it? No, this isn't on you old friend. I won't mention more than needs be to Gretchen, but I do agree that the Last Laugh is somehow involved. I'll ask around with some of the folks that I'm working with now, see if they know anything about it. Jaq says, squeezing the other man's shoulder firmly.

Hey, any way to identify these Last Laugh guys? We were all walking alone last night and saw some guys beating up a cleric of St. Cuthbert. I'm starting to wonder if it was them? he says, hoping his words lifted Patch's spirits some.

Dracone walks over to the Half-elf and whispers into his ear.

Now listen very closely. Nothing angers me more than those who prey on the innocent and I for one will not stop until justice is done but, JUSTICE it will be. We will not go about beating and torturing people for answers as those people may be innocent themselves and then we are just as evil as those we seek. While it may burn our nerves this investigating and waiting, it is the proper way to go about it to prove we are better than those others and I will not stand by and allow any of those I travel with cross that line. I hope this is does not divide us but bring us closer to a mutual trust and understanding.

Toe feeling the tension in the room rising, scrunches his face as if annoyed. He stands up on the chair he was sitting on, trying to get to eye level with everyone.

"Gentlemen, and Lady, let us focus on the task at hand. The half elf huntsman here is undoubtedly uncouth - insultingly so - but, I believe his heart is in the right place. I've no doubt about it. I understand someone important to him may have been taken by the same culprit as the orphanage kidnappers. Our goals are aligned. This has a whiff of something bigger, conspiratorial even. At present, it is better that we work together and hash out personal slights at a later time."

He then turns to Fheneryl.

But, I think you're wise enough to know that you need us more than we need you. And if you decide you'd rather make valuable allies than isolate yourself further, it would behoove you to learn just a modicum of social niceties. More bluntly, learn to play nice with others and be... a little less intense or something."

Satisfied with the lecture - and himself, a bit smugly - Toe sits back down and continues his wait for Jaqir's return.

The half-elven woodsman stiffens at the wave of reprobation coming from his new companions, his face tense with supressed fury as one after another schools him on his behaviour. He stands his ground in the midst of the group, his brow furrowing, his face glowering and his knuckles whitening as he listens in silence to what each of them has to say. After a few tense seconds, he makes a visible effort to control his temper and stares at each and everyone of them with intent, slowly exhaling as he says between clenched teeth:

"You are right. Your so-called civilization is something that doesn't make much sense where I come from."

He turns towards Dracone as he continues: "In the lands I come from, blood is not something shameful. A burst eyebrow and a few broken teeth are not something we fear or cringe from, be they either given, or received. Yet I am not too proud to hear your words and bow to your rules", the wild half-human says without an ounce of irony, "This meatpot here is your world, not mine. I will accept that. For now."

He then gives Kija an unphased look as he declares starkly: "You can choose to be insulted if you so wish. But know that I, Fhenryl Thuath'An'Anthl, do not waste my breath in petty insinuations. I shall call you what you wish to be called."

Finally addressing the whole group: "Let's have no more of this ballroom prattling. If I have offended anyone, so be it. We must find this cult and not stand here wasting our time. Where is the Red Man ? I have spent too long inside this place, already...!"

Yeah, yeah they did. Thanks for the information Patch, I know it isn't easy to tell someone what you did. I will make sure that if Gretchen asks at all, that she knows you weren't doing anythin' but helpin' the littles. They did threaten the cleric, told him to stay away from the orphanage. I definitely think these guys are involved. Hey, once I get this all squared, would you want to join me and we'll go off and see what good we can bring to the world? Jaqir says, mind racing as he puts the dots together.
OOC:
Provided there's not a ton else for Patch and Jaq to talk about, he'll head back into where everyone else is.
After a bit, Jaqir comes back into the main room, face somewhat pulled together in thought.

Sorry for the delay all, I think I have some other stuff to dig into. I don't know that we'll need to bother the littles at all. he says, giving Gretchen's shoulder a squeeze.

OOC:
Okay! Now that we've gathered cluesies at the orphanage, where to next?
Aug 31, 2018 4:32 am
"Sir Jaqir, I think it's best we work in concert on this investigation. Why not share with the rest of us what you have found? What do you mean by other stuff? We have found several possible leads ourselves."

Toe briefs Jaqir on the leads party has found.
OOC:
Assuming Jaqir briefs the party on his finding. If not ignore the rest of the following.
Toe listens to Jaqir's tale intently.

"Interesting indeed. That may be the strongest lead yet. Lady Kija, will you provide us with your consult? What's our best course of action next?"
OOC:
Just noting here that throughout all this Toe is seated on a chair that is way too big for him with his feet dangling off the floor.

Dracone listens to the information as it is all brought together.

"I believe the easiest step to eliminate would be the locksmith. While the locks were installed a long time ago, he may have recently had a break in to his shop and someone could have stolen a key but, it may also be that someone good with locks opened them without a key. I don't think the locksmith is involved but, may know something without really knowing it. Such as, he may have had someone come in recently with a lock and said he lost the key, it may be the same type or lock that he sold the orphanage way back and did not make the connection. This is of course my opinion and I could be wrong."
Aug 31, 2018 1:31 pm
"Consider the matter behind us Fhenryl and I will. As for the next course of action...I agree that consulting the locksmith is necessary. With the addition of this Last Laugh group, I think wonder if we might divide our efforts for a moment. One of us who can disquise their visage could try to make contact with the gang. Perhaps we can set up a sting of some sort and either foil their efforts and learn how their operation works."
Aug 31, 2018 5:11 pm
"Lady diviner, Sir knight, I agree locksmith seems to be a low hanging fruit. As for infiltrating this Last Laugh group, if I may give one suggestion. This could be a risky proposition for whoever infiltrates. If they are, by some bad luck, found out - I'm afraid they'd be sitting ducks. If we decide to take this route, instead of splitting the party - I would suggest rest of us stay out of sight, but close by, so that we can serve as back up in case things go... awry."

Fhenryl nods gravely as he acknowledges Kija's and Toe's words, and edges closer to the latter and to Jaqir as he says: "I agree with the wi... Enchantress Kee-j'ah. I am not one for disguises and fancy words, but I can tell a lie from a truth and I will melt into the shadows, waiting for the time to strike." he says proudly, before pointing to the sorcerer and the halfling: "The Half-Man is also speaking truth when he considers the dangers of this plan, and as for the Red One, he has the best link to the gang..." he then seems to grasp on to something as he hesitantly - and with visible difficulties - corrects himself, "... that is, Master Towh and Master Ja-kieer, both seem to know the ways of devious speech and trickery. I shall remain hidden, make sure our allies stay safe and be ready to pounce on these bandits scum, should the need arise."
OOC:
Fhen is referring to his proficiency in both Stealth and Sense Motive. If any contact with the Last Laugh should be made, he also considers discreetly following the gang members their eventual sting may hope to attract, back to their den if need be.

" Although I'm for a non-invasive tactic to get information from the Last laugh, they do know who we are which will make infiltration difficult."

Looking around the room at everyone, you see Rand give a defeated sigh.

" What if we took a more direct approach for answers?"

After a bit more discussion, the group decides that the best course of action is to see what they can find out from the locksmith, Keygan Ghelve. Following directions given by Headmistress Gretchen, you make your way along Lava Avenue around the south side of the city. Soon enough you come across a two-story building with a swinging sign that reads GHELVE'S LOCKS. Standing in front of the building, you see a heavy, iron-bound oak door leading into the shop. The windows all around the building are barred with iron as well. To the right of the door is a bay window with an impressive display of locks set up inside. The display contains locks of all kinds, from large to small, simple to complex. Trying the door, you find it unlocked.

You hear the ring of a small bell as the door opens, and you all step inside the shop. You are immediately greeted by the smell of warm wood and pipe smoke. To your left is a small fireplace flanked on either side by a padded sitting chair. You see on the mantle a base of dried smoking leaves and a nice collection of pipes. A burgundy-colored carpet runs from the entrance of the shop straight to the back wall, where you can see dozens—perhaps hundreds—of keys hanging from tiny hooks. Looking to your right, you see a handsomely engraved mahogany counter, behind which is an exceptionally tall gnome with salt-and-pepper colored hair and a nicely trimmed goatee. This must be the locksmith, Keygan. Behind him, neatly hiding the rest of the store, hangs a red curtain.
[ +- ] Keygan
The locksmith raises a brow at the motley crew that has just entered his shop. "Good morning, friends. What can I do for you?"
Sep 3, 2018 6:33 pm
"Good morning, Master Ghelve! I am called Tovuk Tinkerton - a mere humble trick fencer. Am honored to be in the presence such master craftsman. And being here now, I can clearly see your venerable reputation is well-earned." Toe bows deeply with his hat to his chest.

"We're here to inquire about one of your fine works. In particular, we find your exquisite pieces at the the orphanage of interest to us. Can you tell us about them?"

"And good morning to you as well, Master Tovuk." Keygan echoes back. "Thank you for your kind words, but I'm no master. The lesson I've learned most keenly over the years is that I actually know very little." He pauses to smile politely at his guests before continuing. "I did craft and install the locks at the orphanage. That was more than twenty years ago now. In fact, I've done most of the shops and government buildings in the city. Why do you ask?"
Sep 5, 2018 1:28 am
"I am Kija Fen, Master Ghelve, and no doubt you have heard of the tragic news that befell the orphanage? We intend to do what we can to find the missing children. In our inspection of the crime scene, we could not help but notice your work. We have come to get your insight into the situation. We hoped you might have some thoughts on how it is that the children were able to leave the building without any obvious signs of tampering. Specifically with your locks. I hope I am not asking you to reveal any trade secrets, but...is it possible to see the mechanism you used on that building? Preferably without the casing so the inner workings can be viewed?"
Sep 5, 2018 6:11 am
Keygan scratches his head nervously. "No signs of tampering, huh? That's just not possible unless... well... um. Here, let me show you." He takes a few steps toward the back of the room, toward a door that sits next to the big rack full of keys, and then stops suddenly, grimacing in pain. "You know what? I don't think I can help you, actually. It's been quite a long time since I put those locks in and I'm not sure I remember what exactly I did. I'm sorry... unless you'd like to purchase something I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

Dracone as usual has stayed at the back, letting those with better tongues do the talking. While watching and listening, he observes the locksmith's actions and wonders if there is something else at work here. Dracone stands still and in the locksmiths direction starts to push out his feelings and tries to sense any evil aura in the immediate area.
Sep 6, 2018 12:34 am
Standing near the door, Fhenryl is watching the lockmaker's interaction with Toe intently. The halfling and Kija seemingly having a firm handle on the situation, he will simply make sure that Keygan doesn't try anything stupid, like running off to a hidden backdoor to attempt to flee, for example.

At some point he will have a discreet look outside, making sure that no-one is spying on them, or trying to come into the shop. He will discourage eventual customers by barring the door and grunting gruffly: "Place is closed, there's been a death in the family...Now, git !" to anyone looking like they may want to barge in.

Rand, you can definitely sense that something strange is going on here.

Elveron senses an evil presence in the room beyond the curtain.

Fhenryl, the street outside the shop is empty save for a young couple taking a mid-morning stroll. You scowl at them and they hurry on.
Keygan nods at Toe and returns to the counter saying rather loudly, "I'm sorry I couldn't be more help to you all. I wish you the best of luck in your investigation." As he talks, he grabs an ink pen and a piece of paper and scrawls a hurried message: "Upstairs. Always watching. Please help."
Sep 6, 2018 4:40 am
"Fhennryl...come look at this for a moment. I think this is exactly the item we were looking for." Kija sees the note and turns to the nearest item for sale. She holds on hand near her face, pointing up above her. She hopes to alert the half-elf to the trouble upstairs without being noticed.
Sep 6, 2018 2:52 pm
Fhenryl sizes up the situation in an instant, and imperceptibly nods his head while holding the enchantress's eye to signal he understands. He then says loudly for anyone to hear: "Nah, way too small, too fragile. What we need is something more like this... here, let me show you. Two-swords, give me that paper, I'll draw it out for you !"
Walking decidedly towards the counter, he grabs the paper that Keygan had scribbled on, takes one quick look at the message -at which point he takes a second to stare wordlessly right at the gnome, then at Toe standing next to him- then grabs the ink pen and writes the following message, for all to see:

Badies are upstars?
I go out, den climbe thru weendow.
Anyoen come with ?
Love, Fhen.

He says loudly and a tad stiffly: "See? This is what I want, not this puny thing there... We're wasting our time here ! I have better things to do that fiddle with these gnomish trinkets !"
He then turns to face Rand, Jaqir and Kija, with his back to the curtain, and there's a very strange nervous tick distorting his facial features. After a moment, they all realize this must be the ranger's attempt at winking.

He then very purposefully and very blatantly leaves the shop, stomping his feet for effect.

Once in the street he will look for a discreet way to scale the building to make it to the upper floor.

Keygan has barred all of his windows on the outside with iron. The walls would be easy enough to climb, but there would be no getting in through the windows without making a racket and doing some damage to the building. Stifling a curse, he swiftly whirls about and subtly dives into a crouch behind the counter, making his way behind Toe as they both start to advance stealthily towards the red curtains. He gives Jaqir and the remainder of the group a nod as he grabs a grim-looking stone warhammer with a short wooden handle wrapped in leather with one hand, and a small cleaver made out of sharpened, dented bone and covered in tribal markings in the other, then returns his focus towards the back of the shop, soon climbing up the stairs on the halfling's heels.

Toe slowly parts the curtain and sneaks through to the base of the stairs. He looks up to make sure the coast is clear before making his way slowly up. Fhenryl follows closely behind, a bolt readied for when he finally spots his foe. Once his head is high enough that he can finally see the landing, Toe looks to the left and to the right, but doesn't see anyone. The others come up behind and don't see anyone either. There's a door at the end of the landing to the left, and one immediately at the top of the stairs to the right.

Jaqir spots it - a waver in the wall, what looks like a tiny bit of movement at the leftmost end of the landing, and two bright blue orbs that seem to blink once and then disappear into the wall. He blinks once or twice because it really doesn't look like there's anything there, but he saw SOMETHING.

Jaqir whispers to the group that he has seen something strange -- some blue orbs near the wall at the left end of the landing. Nodding that they've understood the warning, Toe and Fhenryl carefully make their way down the hall toward the disturbance, both of them ready to attack the first thing that moves.

Toe makes his way toward the door at the end of the hall, and just as he gets close enough to open it, the wall itself seems to shift in shape and change color, revealing a pale blue-skinned humanoid with piercing blue eyes holding a short sword. It was camouflaged like a chameleon against the wall, holding the sword behind its back. As the mouser emerges on their enemy's blind side brandishing his small, flexible blade, the ranger instantly understands he has to grasp the opportunity to strike: in one split second, he lets a bolt fly loose at the creature's face then lets the big crossbow fall by his side as he grabs his warhammer in both hands with a fluid, practiced movement and closes the distance between them in a few wide, bounding steps.

I submitted my character, can you see if it can be accepted? Would be easier to post as Dracone. Not that my actions will improve but, maybe. LOL
His companions head up the stairs, Dracone waits and listens for any sounds of danger.

They are no longer acting quiet, the firing of a crossbow and running footsteps, time to act.

Dracone has been at the bottom of the stairs waiting, knowing something is up there but, not able to help until now. With determination on his face, his heart racing as he will finally be entering real combat for the first time, he bounds up the stairs to assist his comrades in combat, hoping he isn't late and hoping he will not fail them.

Rand runs up the stairs in a panic stopping just behind the skulk trying to take advantage of Toes position.

The young cleric Rand bravely rushes in with his comrades to close the skulk in and prevent him from escaping. The creature's eyes widen as he realizes the trouble he's gotten into, and he calls out for help. Instead of aid, he sees Elveron advancing up the stairs with his weapon brandished.

Just at that moment, the door to the right of the stairs opens and two more creatures step out to join the fray: another of the blue-skinned humanoids, and another shorter creature that looks like an evil gnome with cloven hooves for feet.

At the same time, the gnome-like humanoid with the hooves moves down the stairs to engage Elveron, stabbing wildly at the paladin from above. The dagger slices across Elveron's face, leaving a stinging gash.

Jaqir moves up only so far as to see the closest enemy to their group. With a smile, he begins uttering some magical words and a ball of ice slowly spins in his hand for an instant before flaring into a ball of flame. With a thrust of his hand, a tight beam of searing air and embers blasts towards the creature.

Alerted by the sound of rushing footsteps behind him, Fhenryl stops in his tracks and pivots into a half-crouch to face the incoming strike of another creature, barely deflecting the short, vicious-looking blade of the blue-skinned thug with a hasty strike of his hammer. The two weapons give out a loud 'clang' as they bounce off each-other.

With a roar of anger, and using the weight of his own weapon, he then extends its swing into a full spin, expecting to ram the tapered end of the hammer right into the Skulk's shoulder, but swears under his breath as the stone wedge only meets thin air, widely missing the mark with a great swooshing sound, as its target lithely side-steps the counter-attack and keeps hovering just out of reach, looking for an angle to get past Fhenryl's guard.

The two adversaries take a moment to take each-other's measure, their bodies tensing up for the oncoming showdown.

"Take them alive ! Remember we need answers !", the ranger shouts at his companions, before his eyes settle on the humanoid facing him, hardening in a cold, steely glare: "Not you, though, Rhur'kaash*. Backstabbers and cowards don't find mercy, where I'm from..." he growls menacingly.
OOC:

Jaqir hurls a fiery bolt at the dark creeper, who ducks as it passes over his head. The bolt hits the wall with a thunderous crash, leaving a circle of charred wood and the smell of warm cedar and brimstone. Luckily, the icy base of the spell kept it from setting the room aflame. The small hoofed villain hisses out a response that must be a curse in a language you don't understand.

The first blue-skinned skulk, bolstered by the appearance of his allies, steps to his right, slicing his short sword in a downward arc toward Toe's head. Toe dodges back out of the line of attack and it swings by harmlessly in front of him.

Toe returns his opponent's attack with a thrust of his own, sticking the creature in the abdomen. It winces in pain and scowls at the halfling.

Meanwhile, Fhenryl's growling threat intimidates the skulk he is facing, and the creature takes a tiny nervous step back to resettle himself. You can see it's sword hand shaking slightly.

Jaqir blasts another fiery bolt at the snarling, hoofed creature. This one, too, sails right over its head, but this time in the direction of its skulk companion, striking the skulk in the side while it's busy in its battle against Fhenryl and Rand. It cries out in pain, surprised at the sudden icy searing sensation just below its ribs.

At the same time, Elveron swings at its legs with his flail, trying to hook its ankles and bring it down off its feet. He swings, but the creature lifts its leg up out of the way and the attack has no effect. The creature, having already tasted a bit of the paladin's blood, responds with another slashing attack. This time the paladin is ready, and easily knocks the attack aside with his shield.

The skulk battling Fhenryl and Rand, while feeling his nerves after the ranger's intimidating threat, ducks under the young paladin's thrust and thrusts its own sword toward Rand's torso. The paladin parries by bringing the haft of his mace down onto the skulk's sword, drawing it off to the side.

The other skulk, still engaged with Fhenryl and Rand, has not yet noticed that his friends have been beat. He turns slightly and takes a stab at Rand. As the skulk's sword clatters to the floor, Toe kicks it over the edge of the balcony to land on the rug below. He demands that the creature surrender. At that moment, Fhenryl lets out a guttural cry of rage and smashes the butt of his warhammer into the face of the second skulk, crushing its skull and killing it instantly. The creature's body slumps to the ground, lifeless. Toe pokes the tip of his sword into his foe, indicating that the same fate would soon befall him unless he surrenders. The skulk slowly puts his hands up, saying nothing but glaring coldly at Fhenryl with his piercing blue eyes. The dark creeper lets go of his weapon as well, putting his hands up from where he lay sprawled on the floor at the top of the stairs.

Keygan rushes through the curtain below and looks up to assess the fight. "It's over already? You guys are something. I just went to lock the front door. It's been less than 30 seconds! These creatures have been tormenting me for months."
Sep 22, 2018 1:50 am
His chest still heaving with fury, Fhenryl sustains the glare of the remaining skulk for just long enough to make his thoughts about the creature's chances of survival abundantly clear, while wiping his weapon slowly on the carcass of his dead partner. After giving Rand a quick look to make sure the godly man isn't bleeding out, he approaches the creeper in slow, measured steps.

He comes to a stop mere inches from the half-goat, and stares at him squarely in the face, saying nothing, glowering at the creature and looking very intently at his hoofed feet. Then back at the creeper's face. Then he abruptly head-butts the creeper square in the nose, smashing it in a spray of scarlet.

As the hoofed humanoid screams in surprise and pain and attempts to stop the bleeding, reaching out to the mess of what used to be its nose, the feral half-elven has already grabbed it by the throat and shoved the back of its head against the nearest wall.

His teeth clenched in a rictus of savage, yet cold fury, the ranger pushes his face right against the creeper and roars: "THE CHILDREN: WHERE ARE THEY? I know you took them , you cloven-footed, sorry excuse for a half-human being. You better speak. NOW !!!"

It is very obvious that we need to make our way to this fortress as soon as possible. As Rand has stated, these criminals need to be turned over. The question I have though is one: Do we tell the Authorities everything we know and risk a mob of citizens going to free the children or two: do we inform them we have a lead and will investigate it and keep them posted. I personally think, if we withhold specifics, we will have a better chance of saving the children.
Sep 24, 2018 8:34 pm
None of you are familiar with the names the skulk mentioned -- either the Malachite Fortress or Kazmojen. Keygan speaks up to clarify, "There is an old gnomish enclave called Jzadirune under my shop, and below that is the Malachite Fortress. The fortress was built to guard the underside of the city from foes who would attack from the Underdark. It seems this Kazmojen has taken over and turned it into a hub for his slave trade business."
Sep 24, 2018 8:55 pm
Toe nods in agreement with Dracone. "That is wise sir knight. I also believe this is a delicate situation and needs to be handled with care."

He turns to Keygan after the old gnome gives us the information. "So you say it's under your shop? Are we to assume then there's an entrance somewhere around here to this enclave? And is this Kazmojen part of the said enclave?"

As for the other..." He gives the skulk a ferocious and eloquent look, "... a couchy prison cell is far too good for the likes of him... but do as you see fit."

"Let's decide what to do with these creatures first, and then I'll tell you about Jzadirune and the Fortress. It's a bit of a long tale. Let me fetch some rope." Keygan fetches a length of rope from an upstairs closet, and you bind the skulk and dark creeper. "We should dispose of this body. I would prefer to dump it out back and explain my part in all of this before we call in the guard, if that's what you decide is best. What shall it be?"
Sep 25, 2018 5:00 pm
"I will defer to the decisions of others. I know my strengths and hence my weaknesses. Matters regarding law enforcement is certainly not a strength of mine." Toe then turns to the others awaiting their decision.
Sep 26, 2018 8:55 pm
"Now that they're bound it is no matter, I suppose. I'll tell my tale and you can decide my fate at the end." Keygan walks to the bottom of the stairs and presses a hidden switch to open a small secret door, revealing a dark staircase leading down.

"This is the entrance to Jzadirune. It was once a flourishing enclave where my people would create and sell magic items throughout the region. Seventy-five years ago a terrible curse befell us -- we called it The Vanishing. Several of our crafters faded into nothingness before our eyes over the course of several days, just disappearing into non-existence. Fearing for the safety of the workers, families and customers, the enclave was shut down and has been abandoned since. There is an elevator within Jzadirune that leads down to the Malachite Fortress. The fortress was once occupiedby noble dwarven defenders, but it seems that the situation has changed."

"About three months ago, these creatures came up into my home from Jzadirune. They took me by surprise in the middle of the night, captured my beloved familiar Starbrow, and demanded information about the city. I told them what they wanted to know. When they learned I was a locksmith, they asked me to craft them a set of skeleton keys that would open any of the locks I had crafted. They threatened to torture Starbrow and to kill me if I didn't cooperate. I gave them the key, and since then they have been passing through my shop to rob and kidnap citizens, selling them off into slavery. I was not brave enough to speak up, and I didn't want to risk losing Starbrow. He's down there somewhere. I can sense him -- hungry and afraid."

"I don't know anything about this Kazmojen fellow, other than that he's the one in charge of the whole operation. He isn't anyone I know or have ever heard of, and he never set foot in my home. Only these," he says, kicking the leg of the tied skulk.
Sep 27, 2018 3:04 am
Toe takes off his hat and fidgets with his hair for a bit, "First, on behalf of our ragtag band of wannabe heroes I thank you for coming clean and providing us with this vital information. However, you're basically telling us you've traded the lives of these orphans for your pet's, Master Ghelve. I hope it weighs heavy on your conscience."

He looks at his companions and says, gesturing to the stairway down. "Shall we then?"

The damage you have helped cause has affected many lives and some of those will be scard for life. While I understand someone's attachment to a Familiar, there are those who could have freed him and prevented what you have done. I have no respect for you sir, and I hope you can make ammends to your God for your soul.

Before we decend, does everyone have what will be needed? All your weapons, armor, supplies?
Sep 27, 2018 2:13 pm
Standing in a corner while watching over the two trussed and tied surviving kidnappers, Fhen growls: "Give the lockmaker a break: Familiar or not, seen through its master's eye the critter probably has more sense and its life more value than half the so-called 'people' in this pestilent hole of a city. In any case, what's done is done, no sense yapping on about it. Now, what do we do with this scum ?" He looks down on the skulk and the bloodied creeper with a mirthless smile as he muses: "If you lot really wanna leave them here, that doesn't make that much difference to me. Still, the hoofed one would make great bait to test out underground traps..." with that last chilling comment, the ranger's grin seems to grow a little more sinister.

He then appears to grow bored with the subject and starts busying himself with checking his gear to prepare for their imminent departure. "How do we organize ourselves with the light sources ?", the forest tracker asks off-handedly as he slowly and methodically inspects first a length of hempen rope he pulled from his haversack, then proceeds to tighten the straps of his lamelled leather cuirass. "Only maybe the Red One... apologies, the fire mage Jaqir..." Fhenryl makes a face as if the effort of remembering to mention names constantly was a nuisance to him, "... and also myself can see well-enough in darkness. So: what about the rest of you?"

Rand prays to his mace which begins to give off a soft white glow almost like a torch.

"This simple orison can last quite a while and I can always pray for it again. Pelor never grows bored of this trick is my theory. I should have all that I require for this trip."

Rand begins to give Ghelve a stern look.

" Even though you may have willingly or unwillingly helped these vile men, I must ask if you wish to make amends for the actions you have taken, call the guards and have these men arrested and report while we take our leave."

"You are all absolutely correct. I am ashamed of my participation in these events. I will call the guard, tell them my story, and ensure that these creatures are imprisoned. I have something for you that may help." Keygan hurries to one of the upstairs rooms and returns with a small scroll, dark brown in color and tied with a small strip of leather. He removes the tie and unrolls it on a table, revealing a map. "This is a map of Jzadirune. Here is the elevator down to the Malachite Fortress. The gnomes put traps on all of the gear-shaped doors. You will need to find the appropriate keys to each before you can open them. There are also many secret passageways, though they are not shown on this map. Beware the Vanishing, which seemed to be connected with magical items."
OOC:
I will post the map in the morning. I can’t do it from my phone.
Edit: POSTED! The circle is the elevator. The 'X' is the entrance from Keygan's shop.

I think Fhenryl could try and work his way a little bit ahead as a scout of sorts, if the group decides to use one: he's the only one that has Darkvision (besides from Jaqir, maybe? Seems like Dracone isn't a dwarf but a human after all, so no night-eyes there, I'm afraid...) and has a decent knowledge of traps and pretty high Stealth and Perception skills. Is the tunnel wide enough for two people walking side by side, or is this gonna be more of a single file walking order ?

Rand looks towards Dracone with a puzzled look.

" Wait, ... I could have sworn you were shorter."

He then begins to stroke his beard worryingly. Then quickly moves his attention to check if his shield is strapped properly.
Oct 3, 2018 5:07 pm
OOC:
Okay, well let 's trudge on ahead. Others will catch up as we go. I'm going to assume you head down to the bottom of the staircase. If any of you would like to do any skill checks along the way, let me know and I'll go back and handle them.
The small door under the stairs is open, revealing a stone staircase leading down into darkness. The steps are shrouded with cobwebs and dust. Peering down from where you stand at the top of the steps, you can see that it descends about twenty feet before turning to the right and plunging into darkness. Fhenryl leads the way, his keen eyes able to see at least partially in the darkness.

After the first turn, the staircase descends another twenty feet and then turns again. You move carefully and quietly down to the next landing. From here, you can hear strange sounds emanating from the chamber below: chirping birds, rustling leaves, and cheery giggles. The landing itself is bare, save for an empty iron torch sconce mounted on the south wall. The stairs descend a final twenty feet and open into a large square room.

There is barely enough light in this room to make out the dimensions of this chamber -- it seems to be about a forty foot square with a ten foot ceiling. You can feel a slight draft blowing into the room from a 10' wide passage heading out of the room directly across from the stairs. To your left are two 4' diameter circular doors made of wood and framed with a ring of mortared stones.

The farther of the two doors is closed; you can see that it bears a strange glyph. The closer door bears a different glyph but rests half-open, revealing a rim of gear-like teeth. Dim light spills from the chamber beyond the door, providing the light by which you can see this room.

Mounted to the walls of this chamber are twelve tarnished copper masks, each two feet tall and mounted about four feet above the floor. Each of the masks depicts a slightly different smiling gnome's face. The soft giggling, chirping, and rustling sounds you heard from above seem to pour from the very walls.
OOC:
Reminder that Keygan warned you about the doors being trapped, and that you'll need special keys to bypass the traps.
Oct 3, 2018 11:55 pm
Toe motions to the two doors. "Those are obviously the trapped doors Keygan mentioned." He studies the glyphs on the door, keeping his distance and taking care not to touch the doors or the glyphs. "I've heard of arcane glyphs that serve as wards against intruders or would-be thieves..."
OOC:
Toe will investigate the door, without touching them. Just examine from distance to see if there any strange mechanisms or things of that nature. Not sure if perception is the right roll. Let me know if it isn't.

Toe, you don't see any trap-like mechanisms from the distance you are standing. You can make out a small diamond-shaped keyhole in each of the doors, to the right of the glyph near the rim.

OOC:
Ok back on schedule and much taller. Thanks Rand. lol
As they prepare to decend, Dracone looks towards Rand.

I see you have the ability for light, may you also cast it upon the center piece of my shield my friend?

Dracone will move at the front of the party but, a little behind their scout Fhenryl, with his lighted shield. If Unable to cast, he will walk with a torch in his right hand and his Shield in his left, he will toss the torch in front of him at the first sign of Combat.

As they enter the room with the masks, Dracone will turn and watch the far wall with the open passage.
Oct 4, 2018 10:07 am
Fhenryl enters the landing hall gingerly, stepping lightly as he walks along the wall in a clockwise pattern.
The ranger's face is taut, his hand patting the handle of his black stone hammer, both nostrils seeming to flare slightly in the manner of a wild animal, as he strains all his senses to detect any sign of incoming movement or danger.

On his way he takes his time to inspect some of the grinning masks on his way past the closed door, finally positioning himself just off the entrance to the lit room. Hugging the rim of the opened gear-gate to find cover, he pokes his head in for a cautious look inside.
OOC:
Fhenryl takes his time in passing to note the design of the glyphs, both on the closed door and on the opened one (assuming they are both "gear-shaped", as Keygan described, in which case we can safely assume they're both trapped). As he gets closer to the open door to the lit chamber he will ready his hammer in both hands.

Here's a diagram of what the doors look like, and what the key must look like based on the shape of the keyhole:

https://image.ibb.co/ezHvOe/Jzadirune_Doors.jpg
Fhenryl carefully and quietly sneaks up to the half-open door and peers inside:

You immediately spot the source of the light -- a sunrod lying in the middle of the floor. It sheds enough light for you to make out the contents of the room, which seems to have been a barracks. Gnome-sized cots line the wall, each with a small wooden footlocker at the end. Dust and cobwebs blanket the room, and you can smell the must and disuse. Tiny spiders scurry across the floor and up the walls. You don't see or hear any other movement in the room.

Directly across from the door you're looking through is a circular tunnel bored directly into the wall. It's approximately 5' in diameter and relatively cleanly cut. A small pile of rubble lies on the floor near the tunnel's entrance. You can see by the light of the sunrod that the tunnel goes straight back a few feet before branching off to the left and right.

You can't see the far end of the room without going in, but you're pretty sure that you can't hear or see any creatures from your vantage point.

Reacting instinctively, the wild half-human swings his hammer on the skulk standing on his right side, while attempting to maneuver himself so as to have his back towards the entrance and slowly retreat into the doorway.

As the wedge of his weapon connects with his opponent with a satisfying thud, the ranger gives out a triumphant, blood-curling scream: "Filth ! You'll regret having tested me this day...!" He then calls out to the rest of the group to warn them: "Over here ! OOC:

Just as Dracone manages to get a good hold on him so that Toe can tie him up, Fhenryl walks over and hits the creature hard in the head with the butt of his weapon. The skulk goes limp, unconscious.

As the excitement dies down, your attention begins to shift back to the environment -- the sounds in the mask room that seem to be pouring from the walls, the copper masks, the tiny barracks with its spiderweb-draped beds and tiny footlockers, and the two 5' diameter tunnels bored directly into the stone walls of the room.

Moving swiftly, Fhenryl leaves their prisoner to his companions' care and takes position at the mouth of the eastern tunnel, peering intently into the darkness and straining his ears to make sure that no more enemies are coming their way from that direction. Toe, weapon drawn, tiptoes into the southern tunnel to see where it leads. About 10 feet from the entrance, it forks to the left and to the right, and both directions extend for a ways before turning to the south. There is no light in the tunnels; without the glow from the sunrod in the barracks, you wouldn't be able to see a thing.

Rand places a hand on the neck of the skulk by the door, feeling for a pulse. There is a weak pulse, and it's bleeding pretty badly from a head wound. Rand manages to stop the bleeding using some bandages made from the sheets on one of the nearby bunks. The skulk is stable now, but still unconscious. Without some kind of magical healing, it will be a while before it comes around. This would be a good time to tie this one up like the other.

Rand makes a motion toward Dracone.

" Please Dracone, hand me a bit of rope."

Tying the skulks hands hand and feet. Rand begins to hold his hand above the skulks forehead.

" Pelor please help heal this humanoid, for they deserve a second chance to make what's right."

A ghostly white light wraps around Rands extended hand and transfers to the skulk.

I apologize for not helping more in that fight friends. I didn't want to risk my magic going awry and burning any of you. he says, not quite chagrined, but wanting to explain why he didn't do anything to support the team during the fight.
Oct 23, 2018 2:07 pm
Toe realizing he's useless without a light in the tunnel comes back out. "Well, gentlemen, it looks like the southern tunnel forks to the east and west. But, it's completely dark in there. Perhaps someone who can see in the dark can scout it out."
Oct 23, 2018 3:28 pm
Fhenryl nods: "I'll handle it. Someone takes watch on that eastern entrance."
And with that he slips into the tunnel, going east then south.
Oct 23, 2018 4:38 pm
Fhenryl has keen eyes, but he still needs *some* light in order to see. He makes his way east into the tunnel, but when he gets to the bend, he can no longer see. You'll have to bring a light, or recruit somebody with darkvision (such as Jaqir) to scout the tunnels. That sunrod in the barracks should burn for another hour or so, or you could light a torch to see by.
OOC:
Fhenryl and Toe both have low-light vision, which means they can see twice as far as humans can in dim light, but they still need a light source to see. Unless I missed something on Fhen's character sheet indicating he has darkvision. Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken. Or does anybody have a light spell?
Oct 23, 2018 8:28 pm
OOC:
Yep, a light spell is currently cast on Dracones shield from me. Also, a sunrod is brighter and emits light to 30 ft instead of 20 in case we need to know that. Also, work in water!

" That's ok Jaqir you don't need to give an excuse. I'd prefer to keep my beard if possible."

Rand gives Jaqir a sarcastic smile. Kneeling down next to the unconscious skulk he begins looking for any weapons and start taking them.

" This one will live but won't be conscious for some time. Please, can someone check the other one for anything they may cut the ropes with?"

Fhenryl crouches into the tunnel with Dracone and his lighted shield just behind, leaving the others to watch over the bound skulks. They head east into the tunnel and around two bends before the tunnel turns straight up. About seven feet up, the tunnel opens up into some kind of larger area.

Meanwhile, in the barracks, the skulk that Rand aided stirs and groans as he comes to consciousness and feels the heavy thundering in his head. He quickly realizes that he is tied up, and his eyes snap open, cold and sharp.

Fhenryl turns back towards the knight behind him, his jagged features glowing eerily in the white, magic light. The half-elven ranger lifts a finger to his lips and signals for Dracone to hold back a little ways behind, in fear of having the holy warrior's heavy armor constant scratching and creaking raising unwanted attention from any enemies who may be lurking ahead.

Looking up at the tunnel's exit gaping above him, Fhenryl frowns as he considers his wisest move. After a second, where he stays seemingly frozen, his whole being tensing with awareness for the dangers above, he swings around and huddles close to Dracone, uttering in a hoarse whisper the following words: "Warrior. Get me a hand mirror. Now."

He glares at the armored knight expectantly.

Making his way towards the skulks, Rand bends down on one knee a couple feet away with sunrod in hand. Looking at the skulk he saved from the cracked skull.

"Take it easy, you were on death's door a moment ago. You must concede. We found out your plot and more are coming soon to take you away. However, it might be beneficial to you if you make our venture a little easier. What are down these corridors?"

Rand motions with his shielded arm towards the tunnel entrances in the room.

"We have come to climb. Our friend needs a mirror, does anyone have one on them?

Dispensing of standing around in complete darkness, Fhenryl follows Dracone back to the main room, where he attempts to explain his plan: "We don't know what's in the room above, I didn't hear anything but we know these... scum" at that he stares at the tied-up skulks with ferocious intent "... more of these may be hidden up there. Or a trap. Whoever climbs will be in a completely vulnerable position. We need eyes up there before we enter the room." He gives the group a calm, inquisitive stare.

"Thus: I need a mirror", and turning his attention between the paladin's shining shield and the sunrod: "... and a source of light."

He then pulls out a piece of string and a bolt from his quiver, and starts wrapping the small cord around the pointed head. "I can set it on the tip at an angle, thusly." He shows his contraption to the others before adding with a shrug: "Unless one of you city-dwellers has a simpler, more civilized way of doing this ?"

The ranger then turns his attention towards the tunnels, apparently done with his unusually long and convoluted explanation.

With a look of visible frustration, Rand cast an angry look at Fhenryl.

"NO, I don't have a mirror. Why not just look up? No doubt they heard the clashing of blades when you ran in here! Just parry them."

With an exasperated long breath out Rand closes his eyes.

" Sorry Fhenryl, I can cast light on the bolt but it'll move from Dracone's shield."

The surly half-elf gives Rand a cold stare and seems to tense up at the cleric's dry comments, but finally shrugs his shoulders as he gives out a non-committal grunt: "No mirror, then. I'd thought everyone of you fancy folks had one at hand at all times..."

He bares his teeth at the cleric in what could pass for a mirthless smile, but soon turns back to Dracone: "I can climb up if you keep the light going under me. Should be enough for me to see past the hole and into the chamber above."

He takes a few steps towards the dark passageway before suddenly freezing in his tracks.

Turning back on his heels, his eyes sparkling with something between anger and glee, his face breaks into a wry grin as he adds grimly, looking around at his assembled companions and their trussed-up prisoners: "If my headless body falls back into the tunnel, you'll know the room is probably trapped. Now let's go."

Dracone smirks at his new companion.

"If your headless body drops down, we'll have something to feed our prisoners."

Dracone turns to follow Fhen down the tunnel to help light the way.
Nov 4, 2018 3:58 pm
Fhenryl and Dracone make their way back to the entrance to the room above. The tunnel is narrow enough that you could brace yourself on either side to make climbing easier. It also wouldn't be too hard to jump and pull yourself up -- the lip of the floor looks to be only about seven feet above the floor of the tunnel you're standing in, so only a little over a foot above your head.
OOC:
Fhenryl, how would you like to ascend? Make either a Climb check or an Acrobatics check (to jump). Or if you have a different idea, I will be happy to entertain that as well.
Nov 4, 2018 6:55 pm
Leaving his great crossbow leaning against the tunnel wall, the whiskered hunter secures his warhammer to his leather belt and proceeds to brace himself against the sides of the vertical vent, edging his way towards the opening above as he uses his legs and back as leverage on his slow, careful climb.

Trying to be as silent as possible, he tilts his head towards the opening as he reaches just below ground level, stretching his neck in an attempt to get a sense of what's in the room he's about to pull himself into.

After a few seconds of tense alertness, he grabs onto the edge of the opening and catapults himself inside the room, using all the strength of his arms and shoulders to jerk his body up and quickly roll head over heels, landing in a crouching stance a few feet from the rim. His right hand already clenching on the hilt of his weapon, Fhen swings his head rapidly from left to right as he scans his surroundings, ready for anything...
OOC:
So I guess a Climb check to get to floor level, Perception to see if anything's amiss inside the room above, followed by Acrobatics for the bouncy roll-over stunt.

Dracone leaps up, grabs the edge of the tunnel and pulls himself up into the room above, the light on his shield all but eliminating any remaining shadows in the room. He takes position flanking the skulk so as to best aid his companions.

Jaqir following Dracone's lead, attempts to make his way up as well, but just can't get a grip on the stone walls.

Fhenryl swings his warhammer at the skulk, who ducks under -- the weapon whistles by dangerously just above the creature's head. Rand follows up with an attack of his own, this one connecting. The heavy mace makes a sickening crack against the creature's back, a spray of blood ejecting from the skulk's mouth. The creature falls to its knees, struggling to breathe. It holds up an arm signalling its surrender.

In one swift movement, Fhenryl snaps the skulk's sword off his hand while holding the blue humanoid down on the ground, one booted foot pressing on the poor fiend's bloodied neck and chin.

Ignoring the gurgling noises from their prisoner, now feebly struggling under his heel, the half-elf turns towards Rand, giving the cleric a curt nod of acknowledgment:
"I thank thee and thy sun god for this blessing, priest." He looks down at his torn legging now encrusted with dried blood, at the new, pinkish scar writhing along his thigh, then at the grimacing skulk beneath his foot. "A little deeper and that thing could have nicked an artery..."
He turns his golden, slanted eyes on Rand again before continuing with the faintest trace of mockery, the corner of his thin lips curving slightly as he quips raspily: "I suppose you'll want to heal that one too."

Lifting his foot off the wounded skulk, who starts hacking and coughing with relief as it takes in a big gulp of air, the ranger takes a couple of steps off to the side, looking around at the room then examining the creature's sword before adding dryly, as if to himself: "Next time, someone maybe brings a mirror..."

Rand begins examining the skulk. Noting the skulk is still moving and acknowledging him, directs him to the entrance in the floor.

" Jaqir, Toe, we have another one on his way down put him with the others and tie him please!"

Rand stands looking around the room looking anxious. Then collapses against the wall.

" A few inches to the left and I would have permanently paralyzed him, or worse."

In frustration, he throws the fading sun rod against the opposite wall.

Fhen looks at the cleric gravely, a perplexed frown creeping between his thick, jutting brows. "I respect your ways and those of thy God, Holy Man, but hear me when I say this: this blue shookyir* wouldn't have hesitated in slitting your throat. These 'skulks' are not mere children snatchers: these are foul, murdering creatures, and I have a nasty feeling we're about to encounter worse before this is over..."

He gives Rand a level look, before awkwardly putting his scarred, gnarled hand on the cleric's shoulder: "Life is a precious thing, that much is true. But sometimes it's Kill or Be Killed." He turns and also looks towards Dracone, who's standing beside them still holding his magic shield and listening in on their exchange, as he continues: "I say: try and don't get too tangled-up in the morals of it all. Your churches and patrons taught you many things, but now we're deep in the midst of a very real and very dangerous territory. These are Thanethyr An' Parathr', The Wild Places Under The Earth. The dark creatures that live in these parts have never heard of thy gods, and if they have, they laugh at their folly !"

Letting out a sigh and a grunt to signify his part in that conversation is over, the ranger then turns his back on the two holy warriors and takes a long look at the room around them, scratching his coarse, tangled sideburns thoughtfully while he examines their new surroundings.

I'm trying to go through the posts but I'm a little confused about where we are at the moment. Anyone have a short summary?

OOC:
Toe is back in the barracks watching over the tied up skulks. Jaqir is in the tunnel below the room -- he didn't succeed in climbing up. Fenryl, Rand and Dracone are up in the room above the tunnel with the newly captured skulk.

OOC:
After going ahead through the southern tunnels Fhenryl, helped with Dracone's magically lit shield, managed to find a vent going upwards towards what seemed to be another empty room (at least he could hear nothing). He attempted to use an old dungeon-crawler's trick by tying a small mirror to the tip of one of his crossbow bolts, in the hope of having a small reflected view into the room above, before having to enter it in a defenseless position, but he was deterred by the fact there was no-one with said-mirror on site. Back in the barracks and after a brief deliberation with the group, he and Dracone both returned to the vent and Fhen hauled himself up, to be instantly set upon by another hidden Skulk. After a brief battle where they were joined by Rand, who managed to heal Fhenryl from a nasty gash in the thigh, they took the creature prisoner and are now ready to send him back down to Jaqir, who's waiting below. The skulk saw Jaqir's face and got somewhat intimidated into cooperating, at least it seems that way. Meanwhile, Toe's still in the barracks, watching over their first 2 skulk prisoners, who were healed by Rand... (to be continued)

p.s: sorry, that wasn't exactly "short".

Fhenryl senses that the skulk is sincere in aiding you for the time being, if only to preserve his own life. That isn't to say he's to be trusted in a dark room alone, though.

Rand attempts to put the skulk in his place to ensure that it acts on its best behavior. The skulk listens, nodding and smiling as innocently as it can manage. "You will not be betrayed by me, Shiny One. Where do you go first? To the elevator or to the rat?"

Sorry for the delay in responding to this one. I missed these posts in the stream..... :(

" What is your name?"

Rand begins going through his backpack. You see he brings out a small leather balder filled with lamp oil and un-hooks his lantern from the side of his backpack.

"Hadan. What is that?"
Nov 29, 2018 10:00 am
" Well Hadan, do you mean this lantern or the man on fire below?"

Rand then looks towards Dracone and Fhenryl.

" Well did we want to stay up here and look around or meet back up with the group below?"

Fhenryl swings around and gives Hadan a dark look before turning to answer Rand: "I say let's ask our new 'friend' here what this room is here for... It doesn't seem to be of much use, except to get filth like him to hide away, then try and murder us !" While saying that, the half-elf takes another long look around the small chamber, looking especially towards the dark corners and the ceiling to try and spot any other entrance, or air vent.

After making sure his sharp eyes have missed nothing of interest, he then bores his stare into the skulk, almost spitting his words with cold rage but keeping his temper in check as he addresses their coerced 'guide' with visible reluctance: "What was that you said about a Rat, shookyir ? Anything we need to know here ? Speak, before I use this sword to lob your ugly mug off your shoulders...!", then as he notices Hadan's fleeting look towards Rand, the wild half-human brings his face real close to the skulk's and whispers between clenched teeth: "... unless I decide to cut off both your blue ears first, and chuck them to my burning friend down there for him to barbecue. Oh you're absolutely right, scum, our Sun Priest would not approve, but I think you know I'd be willing to live with that. No tricks here, just tell us what you know about the dangers ahead !"

Knowing this could grow very ugly very quickly, Dracone is split. He knows they need the answers for their safety and to solve the mystery and save the children but, the way Fhen is going about it just isn't right. Dracone thinks about this very carefully.

Making the threats in order to save the children isn't really evil but, following through is. So far he hasn't really crossed the line.

I'm going to rejoin the others below and se how they are getting along.

"Great idea Dracone, anything Hadan needs to say can be heard by everyone."

Rand offers to help Hadan down, once we're all out of the room I'll let Hadan walk towards the room with Toe ahead of me (after picking up my shield).

As Fhenryl makes his threat, Jaqir quirks a smile and sends a few sparks shooting up through the hole in the floor.
