Chapter One - The Adventure Begins

After her investigation Kija looks dejected. "If they used magic to get in, there is no trace left. Sorry, my plan is a bust."
Aug 27, 2018 3:26 am
Fhenryl spends several minutes carefully investigating the tracks in the wooded park behind the orphanage. He finds the footprints of many children as well as a few adults. To be expected. He also discovers some small hoof prints from an apparently bipedal creature, and on one tree he finds a small carving of an open eye with smoke coming from the top.

Rand comes to the same conclusion as Kija — there are no traces of magic in the dormitories that he can detect.

Dracone, sifting through a pile of documents you find a half-written note thanking Lord Vhalantru for a recent large donation to the orphanage. You also find a coupon for a buy one, get one free dinner at Meat on a Stick on the north side of town.

Does Toe or Rand find anything else in the dormitories? (see perception roll and assist roll)

Fhenryl stiffens as he comes across the mark of the smoking eye: this is what his brother had mentioned to Sister Jenya as he came to St Cuthbert's temple!
He kneels next to the small hoof prints, trying to recall if he came across this type of creature before, his eyes peeled for further tracks that may give an indication as to where the creature came from, or where it was going.

OOC:
Not sure if he needs to do another tracking roll, or if the depth of the tracks in the ground might indicate if the creature was dragging or carrying anything/anyone... also, should I include a knowledge check of some sort to identify the type of creature (do, say, kobolds have hoofed feet in Greyhawk, and would Fhen know about that)?

Ash, make a Knowledge [Nature] check to see if you can determine what kind of creature left the tracks.

Fhenryl concentrates as he tries to recall where he saw similar tracks on his forest hunts and wanderings. All the while, the image of his brother comes to haunt him. Sdion mentioned cages: is this smoking eye a secret slavers' cult? What do they do with those they capture? Why was his brother seemingly so agitated, what did he find out that had him so worked up? Who are these hoofed creatures, who sent them ?

His attention goes back to the tracks in front of him...

Dracone waits for the others to finish their search of the dorms. As they return....

Nothing much has happened down here, I'm not much on looking for things but, I did find this half written note to a Lord Vhalantru thanking him for a large donation. Not sure if that may lead to something or not, maybe as a donation he expects something in return like an open window or door? I'm sure I am just grasping at straws but, if he owns a mine that could lead into the clue we have.

"Brother Rand, Lady Kija, and I have searched through the dormitories. We found on the locks to the dormitories, a stamped G, which according to Brother Rand is a signature of a local locksmith named Ghelve. Usually, this wouldn't be of any interest, however, given the line in the riddle produced by Sister Jenya's precious artifact, 'Locks are the key to finding them', it may be a lead. Other that that, we unfortunately come empty handed."

OOC:
Sorry, weekend is always stupid busy for me! The downside to having three children using you as a gymnasium at home!
Earlier
Jaqir nods softly at the suggestion. I will check in on Patch first, just to say hi. While my associates search the facility, could you help me find a quiet place to talk with the kids together and then separately Gretchen? I want to make sure they are comfortable when we talk.

Once the talking space is identified
Jaqir heads to Patch's room and knocks softly on the door.

Fhenryl, distracted by thoughts of the suffering his brother may be going through, can't focus well enough to determine for sure what creatures may have left the tracks. The hoof prints are cloven, like those of a goat or a pig. The only bipedal cloven-hoofed creature he can think of is a satyr, but the likelihood of one being found in the midst of a city this size is nearly nonexistent. The thought is there in his head, but it doesn't seem like it's the right answer. It must have been something else that made those prints.
OOC:
Meanwhile, back in the Hall of Justice...
Gretchen suggests the use of the sitting room to talk to the children. It's familiar and comfortable, and it can become private enough if the doors are closed. Once that's settled, Jaqir heads around back and knocks on the door leading to the basement.

Inside the room, Jaqir hears Patch grumble, roll out of bed, and clump drowsily to the door. The door opens, revealing a half-orc wearing only some tan canvas breeches and an eye patch over his left eye. As the brightness of the morning hits him, he snarls and squints his one good eye severely. "Who is it?" It takes him almost a full minute before he can open his eye far enough to be able to see who it is. "Jaqir? Wow, this is a surprise." He rubs the back of his head with one hand, smiling with embarrassment as he realizes how he must look in nothing but his breeches. "How have you been, my friend? What brings you back to visit?" He waits for a moment for Jaqir to respond, and then his face goes stone sober. "It's the missing kids, isn't it?"

"Althan'aan Elethyll'nayth ! May the Seven Devils From The Deep take them all !"

Fhenryl curses under his breath, the normally soft elven speech sounding strangely alien, spoken in the ranger's raspy, rugged tones.

Rubbing his jaw reflectively, he proceeds to make his way back towards the house. Once there, he goes straight to find Gretchen and whoever is still standing in the main room.

"I found something out back. Tracks. Like a small pig, or a goat, but on two legs. Not sure what." he says in a surly tone. "And a symbol carved on a tree... Eye symbol. With smoke coming out of it."
His eyes are set icily into the distance, as if attempting to drill a hole through the wall with the sheer intensity of their stare. His teeth are once again clenched and his razor-thin lips stretch in an angry, mirthless grin.

"A cult. It's a slavers cult, I'm sure of it...!" he hisses, apparently speaking more to himself that addressing anyone in the small room, before adding ominously: "I'll hang their insides to dry like beavers' skins, I swear it by the Old Forest Gods!"
OOC:
He's still attempting a knowledge check to identify the smoking eye symbol, on the off-chance

"A smoking eye? That sounds familiar... Come with me." Gretchen leads you back to the school room and pulls out a portfolio labeled "Terrem". While she sifts through the pages, she says, "Terrem is one of the boys who was kidnapped. He's always been a rather gloomy boy, but it's gotten worse in the last few months. Look at this." She pulls out a few drawings and lays them side by side on a table. Each one is either a drawing of an eye with smoking above it (similar to the one Fhenryl found carved on the tree), or an eye with an upward-pointing arrow through the middle.
Aug 29, 2018 12:38 am
"That... is rather creepy, especially for a young boy to be doodling I must say. So, it seems we have a few leads:
1. The locksmith,
2. Lord Vhalantru - who may have influence over the orphanage,
3. Creepy smoking eye symbol that is somehow connected to one of the kidnapped boys.

Now, hopefully sir Jaqir will return to us with something a bit less puzzling and more concrete."

Toe will patiently wait for Jaqir's return after his investigations in the waiting room. In the meantime, Toe will ask Gretchen a few questions.

"Lady Gretchen, what can you tell us about the locksmith who installed the locks in the boys' and girls' dormitories? I believe Ghelve is his name? And, does Lord Vhalantru have free access in and out of this orphanage?"

Aye, it's the missing littles that brought me today. Life has been ok, found some exciting truths about myself since I left. But I've been meanin' to stop by though, to see you. I'm glad you were awake. How've you been old friend? Jaqir says, holding out his hand to hopefully embrace the other man's forearm in greeting.
Aug 29, 2018 5:53 am
Patch takes Jaqir's forearm and gives it a firm squeeze. "I've been good. Trying to keep busy." The two of you make small talk for a few minutes, dancing around the painful topic of the missing children. You can sense that he has something on his mind, and after a while he spits it out. "I feel like it's my fault, Jaq." He sits down on his bed and takes a deep breath before continuing.

"A few months back I met a guy. He's part of this organization, the Last Laugh. A guild of sorts. Anyway, I meet this guy at the bar one night. We get to talking and I mention that I work at the orphanage. He ends up asking me if I can keep an eye on one of the kids — Terrem. He said he could get me into his guild. I could make some real money, get out of this place. It sounded good, so I agreed. What harm could it do to keep an eye on the kid?"

"We met up a few more times, me and this guy. He taught me some stuff—skills I can use to protect the orphanage and later on to make some extra coin. Then Terrem disappeared. I tried to get in touch with the guy, but he's nowhere to be found. I have this sick feeling in my gut that the Last Laugh is in on this somehow, and now I'm part of it. I'm a piece of shit, Jaq. As much as I try, I just can't get away from that. Just whatever you do, don't tell Gretchen, huh? It would break her heart."

OOC:
For everyone else:
Gretchen puts a hand on her hip and tilts her head up just a bit as she thinks back. "That would be Keygan Ghelve. He's the finest locksmith in the city. I bought all these locks from him back, oh, twenty years or so ago now. Charged me a pretty coin, too. He has a lovely shop off of Lava Avenue on the south side of the city."

"As for Vhalantru, no. I'm the only one with a key to the orphanage. He recently sent us a very generous donation, and has come to visit the children a few times, but he's doesn't hang around much and he's never asked for a key. He's a very charming young man."
Aug 29, 2018 7:09 pm
Kija lets out a small sound. Nothing specific but it communicates a level of displeasure at the matron's words. "Young charming men are not usually prone to giving their wealth to the causes of orphans. Do you know if Vhalantru is married, or has ever lost a child...or a sibling, to tragedy?" She pauses, her eyes go a little vacant for a moment as she ponders another idea quickly. "Does...or did he pay any particular attention to a specific child? Do any of the children remind you of Vhalantru, in a physical capacity? Eye and hair color, facial structure, density of freckles?"
Aug 30, 2018 1:08 am
"That is quite a keen observation Lady Kija, perhaps we can try to arrange an audience with this young charming noble. We also have this Keyvan Ghelve that we can visit. Rather appropriate name that."

He looks around to his companions.

"Once Jaqir is back we should decide on our next course of action. I will abide by whatever the group decides."
Aug 30, 2018 2:57 am
Fhenryl had started pacing back and forth, his brow furrowed in thought and his face slowly turning a nasty purple in his impatience to get on with their search. He finally brought himself to a stop and turned towards Kija and Rand with an exasperated, fuming expression:
"You witch, and you, Sun-servant! You know of no such symbol as the one I described? There must be ancient stories about such things, old tales, mayhaps forgotten prayers...?", he shook his mane of plaited black locks in frustration. "As for the young lordling, leave me a moment alone with him and we shall soon find out if he has anything to hide or shame himself for !", he said to Kija with a feral grin.

The mere mention of beating local aristocracy to a pulp appearing to have calmed his nerves somewhat, the half-elf took a deep breath and raked his fingers through his hair, turned towards the direction Jaqir had taken and concluded: "In any case we must wait for the Red One. He is taking time to come back. Probably this is a good sign, and he will have valuable information to provide."

OOC:
Not sure if anyone else can, or wants to try a knowledge check on that symbol, but may be worth a try... and as far as identifying the tracks, I wouldn't know if anyone had the skill available to try a second look there, as well.

Gretchen seems a bit put off by both Kija's criticism and Fhenryl's aggression. She responds with just a touch of shortness in her tone. "This orphanage is funded entirely by donations from Cauldron's nobility, and Vhalantru is known to be exceptionally generous. It didn't seem strange to me at all that he gave such a sum. He single-handedly funded the renovation of the town hall and lakeside pavilion ten years ago. Rumor has it that he's an orphan himself, but nobody really knows much about his past and he doesn't talk about it publicly. Smart, if you ask me."

"And no, I don't believe he's married or ever has been. He's not the father of any of these children, if that's what you're suggesting."
