Kija looks abashed as she responds to Gretchen, "My apologies Matron, I did not mean to slander Lord Vhalantru's character. I was attempting to work through all possible options. If, as you say, he is a well known philanthropist and possible an orphan himself, then his conduct is entirely reasonable. I am not judging anyone before facts are known, and I am willing to accept proof of innocence or guilt that is verifiable. We cannot know what we do not know."

Turning to the half elf, her expression settles into a flat unreadable one. "You ranger, when you call me witch...do you use that word out of ignorance or malice? My name is Kija Fen. I am a Wizard. I have spent years training my mind to master the energies that bind this world. Few mortals in this realm have the capacity to do what I can do. A [/i]witch[/i] has sold their soul for paltry gifts of power, where as I have set myself on a path that I will blaze for myself. I am no mere witch and I expect you to adjust your way of thinking."

Nah Patch, you aren't a piece of shit at all. I can see how you'd think it might of been your fault, but think on it for a minute. If they had asked you to introduce them to the kid or you had given them keys to the orphanage, it'd be your fault maybe. But Hells below brother, you did what any of us would have. Watched a little for a chance at an honest wage, and you picked up some skills out of it? No, this isn't on you old friend. I won't mention more than needs be to Gretchen, but I do agree that the Last Laugh is somehow involved. I'll ask around with some of the folks that I'm working with now, see if they know anything about it. Jaq says, squeezing the other man's shoulder firmly.

Hey, any way to identify these Last Laugh guys? We were all walking alone last night and saw some guys beating up a cleric of St. Cuthbert. I'm starting to wonder if it was them? he says, hoping his words lifted Patch's spirits some.
OOC:
Sorry for the slow posting to get through Jaq and Patch's reunion talking.

AshDrunbar says:
"As for the young lordling, leave me a moment alone with him and we shall soon find out if he has anything to hide or shame himself for !", he said to Kija with a feral grin.
Dracone walks over to the Half-elf and whispers into his ear.

Now listen very closely. Nothing angers me more than those who prey on the innocent and I for one will not stop until justice is done but, JUSTICE it will be. We will not go about beating and torturing people for answers as those people may be innocent themselves and then we are just as evil as those we seek. While it may burn our nerves this investigating and waiting, it is the proper way to go about it to prove we are better than those others and I will not stand by and allow any of those I travel with cross that line. I hope this is does not divide us but bring us closer to a mutual trust and understanding.

Rand appears skittish after being addressed by Fheneryl.

" What Kija has said is true Fheneryl, it's also considered rude and insulting to address people other than by name. It demeans us and you for that matter. I understand you might not be used to interacting with people in this matter. So please I ask of you."

Rand holds out his hand toward Fheneryl.

" Call me Rand."

"A cleric? Gods. I gotta get out of this mess," Patch says. He looks relieved to get everything off his chest—a visible weight has come off his shoulders. "The Last Laugh guys usually go around with their faces painted black and white. Did those guys last night have painted faces?"
OOC:
Rand, you aren't familiar with the smoking eye symbol.

Toe feeling the tension in the room rising, scrunches his face as if annoyed. He stands up on the chair he was sitting on, trying to get to eye level with everyone.

"Gentlemen, and Lady, let us focus on the task at hand. The half elf huntsman here is undoubtedly uncouth - insultingly so - but, I believe his heart is in the right place. I've no doubt about it. I understand someone important to him may have been taken by the same culprit as the orphanage kidnappers. Our goals are aligned. This has a whiff of something bigger, conspiratorial even. At present, it is better that we work together and hash out personal slights at a later time."

He then turns to Fheneryl.

"Now good huntsman. You may be spoiled in your hermetic ways. It seems obvious you don't socialize much among other men and women. But, I think you're wise enough to know that you need us more than we need you. And if you decide you'd rather make valuable allies than isolate yourself further, it would behoove you to learn just a modicum of social niceties. More bluntly, learn to play nice with others and be... a little less intense or something."

Satisfied with the lecture - and himself, a bit smugly - Toe sits back down and continues his wait for Jaqir's return.

The half-elven woodsman stiffens at the wave of reprobation coming from his new companions, his face tense with supressed fury as one after another schools him on his behaviour. He stands his ground in the midst of the group, his brow furrowing, his face glowering and his knuckles whitening as he listens in silence to what each of them has to say. After a few tense seconds, he makes a visible effort to control his temper and stares at each and everyone of them with intent, slowly exhaling as he says between clenched teeth:

"You are right. Your so-called civilization is something that doesn't make much sense where I come from."

He turns towards Dracone as he continues: "In the lands I come from, blood is not something shameful. A burst eyebrow and a few broken teeth are not something we fear or cringe from, be they either given, or received. Yet I am not too proud to hear your words and bow to your rules", the wild half-human says without an ounce of irony, "This meatpot here is your world, not mine. I will accept that. For now."

He then gives Kija an unphased look as he declares starkly: "You can choose to be insulted if you so wish. But know that I, Fhenryl Thuath'An'Anthl, do not waste my breath in petty insinuations. I shall call you what you wish to be called."

Finally addressing the whole group: "Let's have no more of this ballroom prattling. If I have offended anyone, so be it. We must find this cult and not stand here wasting our time. Where is the Red Man ? I have spent too long inside this place, already...!"

Yeah, yeah they did. Thanks for the information Patch, I know it isn't easy to tell someone what you did. I will make sure that if Gretchen asks at all, that she knows you weren't doing anythin' but helpin' the littles. They did threaten the cleric, told him to stay away from the orphanage. I definitely think these guys are involved. Hey, once I get this all squared, would you want to join me and we'll go off and see what good we can bring to the world? Jaqir says, mind racing as he puts the dots together.
OOC:
Provided there's not a ton else for Patch and Jaq to talk about, he'll head back into where everyone else is.
After a bit, Jaqir comes back into the main room, face somewhat pulled together in thought.

Sorry for the delay all, I think I have some other stuff to dig into. I don't know that we'll need to bother the littles at all. he says, giving Gretchen's shoulder a squeeze.

"Sir Jaqir, I think it's best we work in concert on this investigation. Why not share with the rest of us what you have found? What do you mean by other stuff? We have found several possible leads ourselves."

Toe briefs Jaqir on the leads party has found.
OOC:
Assuming Jaqir briefs the party on his finding. If not ignore the rest of the following.
Toe listens to Jaqir's tale intently.

"Interesting indeed. That may be the strongest lead yet. Lady Kija, will you provide us with your consult? What's our best course of action next?"
OOC:
Just noting here that throughout all this Toe is seated on a chair that is way too big for him with his feet dangling off the floor.

OOC:
Okay! Now that we've gathered cluesies at the orphanage, where to next?
Aug 31, 2018 12:07 pm
Dracone listens to the information as it is all brought together.

"I believe the easiest step to eliminate would be the locksmith. While the locks were installed a long time ago, he may have recently had a break in to his shop and someone could have stolen a key but, it may also be that someone good with locks opened them without a key. I don't think the locksmith is involved but, may know something without really knowing it. Such as, he may have had someone come in recently with a lock and said he lost the key, it may be the same type or lock that he sold the orphanage way back and did not make the connection. This is of course my opinion and I could be wrong."
Aug 31, 2018 1:31 pm
"Consider the matter behind us Fhenryl and I will. As for the next course of action...I agree that consulting the locksmith is necessary. With the addition of this Last Laugh group, I think wonder if we might divide our efforts for a moment. One of us who can disquise their visage could try to make contact with the gang. Perhaps we can set up a sting of some sort and either foil their efforts and learn how their operation works."
Aug 31, 2018 5:11 pm
"Lady diviner, Sir knight, I agree locksmith seems to be a low hanging fruit. As for infiltrating this Last Laugh group, if I may give one suggestion. This could be a risky proposition for whoever infiltrates. If they are, by some bad luck, found out - I'm afraid they'd be sitting ducks. If we decide to take this route, instead of splitting the party - I would suggest rest of us stay out of sight, but close by, so that we can serve as back up in case things go... awry."

Fhenryl nods gravely as he acknowledges Kija's and Toe's words, and edges closer to the latter and to Jaqir as he says: "I agree with the wi... Enchantress Kee-j'ah. I am not one for disguises and fancy words, but I can tell a lie from a truth and I will melt into the shadows, waiting for the time to strike." he says proudly, before pointing to the sorcerer and the halfling: "The Half-Man is also speaking truth when he considers the dangers of this plan, and as for the Red One, he has the best link to the gang..." he then seems to grasp on to something as he hesitantly - and with visible difficulties - corrects himself, "... that is, Master Towh and Master Ja-kieer, both seem to know the ways of devious speech and trickery. I shall remain hidden, make sure our allies stay safe and be ready to pounce on these bandits scum, should the need arise."
OOC:
Fhen is referring to his proficiency in both Stealth and Sense Motive. If any contact with the Last Laugh should be made, he also considers discreetly following the gang members their eventual sting may hope to attract, back to their den if need be.

OOC:
Sorry their guys just a busy weekend. Yeah, I'm not super familiar with the smoking eye symbol and Rand has no idea what it is according to the roll."
" Although I'm for a non-invasive tactic to get information from the Last laugh, they do know who we are which will make infiltration difficult."

Looking around the room at everyone, you see Rand give a defeated sigh.

" What if we took a more direct approach for answers?"

After a bit more discussion, the group decides that the best course of action is to see what they can find out from the locksmith, Keygan Ghelve. Following directions given by Headmistress Gretchen, you make your way along Lava Avenue around the south side of the city. Soon enough you come across a two-story building with a swinging sign that reads GHELVE'S LOCKS. Standing in front of the building, you see a heavy, iron-bound oak door leading into the shop. The windows all around the building are barred with iron as well. To the right of the door is a bay window with an impressive display of locks set up inside. The display contains locks of all kinds, from large to small, simple to complex. Trying the door, you find it unlocked.

You hear the ring of a small bell as the door opens, and you all step inside the shop. You are immediately greeted by the smell of warm wood and pipe smoke. To your left is a small fireplace flanked on either side by a padded sitting chair. You see on the mantle a base of dried smoking leaves and a nice collection of pipes. A burgundy-colored carpet runs from the entrance of the shop straight to the back wall, where you can see dozens—perhaps hundreds—of keys hanging from tiny hooks. Looking to your right, you see a handsomely engraved mahogany counter, behind which is an exceptionally tall gnome with salt-and-pepper colored hair and a nicely trimmed goatee. This must be the locksmith, Keygan. Behind him, neatly hiding the rest of the store, hangs a red curtain.
[ +- ] Keygan
The locksmith raises a brow at the motley crew that has just entered his shop. "Good morning, friends. What can I do for you?"
Sep 3, 2018 6:33 pm
"Good morning, Master Ghelve! I am called Tovuk Tinkerton - a mere humble trick fencer. Am honored to be in the presence such master craftsman. And being here now, I can clearly see your venerable reputation is well-earned." Toe bows deeply with his hat to his chest.

"We're here to inquire about one of your fine works. In particular, we find your exquisite pieces at the the orphanage of interest to us. Can you tell us about them?"
OOC:
Toe is fishing here and also trying to flatter him into ease. He's looking for any suspicious/sudden change in reaction. I'm rolling both diplomacy and perception just in case.

"And good morning to you as well, Master Tovuk." Keygan echoes back. "Thank you for your kind words, but I'm no master. The lesson I've learned most keenly over the years is that I actually know very little." He pauses to smile politely at his guests before continuing. "I did craft and install the locks at the orphanage. That was more than twenty years ago now. In fact, I've done most of the shops and government buildings in the city. Why do you ask?"
Sep 5, 2018 1:28 am
"I am Kija Fen, Master Ghelve, and no doubt you have heard of the tragic news that befell the orphanage? We intend to do what we can to find the missing children. In our inspection of the crime scene, we could not help but notice your work. We have come to get your insight into the situation. We hoped you might have some thoughts on how it is that the children were able to leave the building without any obvious signs of tampering. Specifically with your locks. I hope I am not asking you to reveal any trade secrets, but...is it possible to see the mechanism you used on that building? Preferably without the casing so the inner workings can be viewed?"
Sep 5, 2018 6:11 am
Keygan scratches his head nervously. "No signs of tampering, huh? That's just not possible unless... well... um. Here, let me show you." He takes a few steps toward the back of the room, toward a door that sits next to the big rack full of keys, and then stops suddenly, grimacing in pain. "You know what? I don't think I can help you, actually. It's been quite a long time since I put those locks in and I'm not sure I remember what exactly I did. I'm sorry... unless you'd like to purchase something I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
