Chapter One - The Adventure Begins

OOC:
Rand, there is a window in the sitting room. You find that the window itself is locked shut with a lever mechanism. You have to open the lever and then open the window to get to the shutter, which is bolted shut with a metal bolt on one side that slides into a hole in the other. It's functioning perfectly, and there is no sign of any damage on this one. There's nothing that seems out of place in the room, or in the entry hall. It's as if nothing had ever happened here.
At mention of the kidnappings, Gretchen's head tilts down to the floor and her tone turns to sadness. "They just disappeared in the night, Jaq. Nobody saw or heard a thing. None of the children so much as stirred, and in the morning they were just gone. Four of them, from right under my nose. I feel as though I failed them." She pauses for a moment as emotion sweeps over her and she tries to hold herself together in front of her guests. She steels her face and says, "It's reassuring that there are so many different people looking for them. The town guard came first thing in the morning when we reported them missing. The next day two men from the Lord Mayor's office came by asking questions, and then yesterday the young man of St. Cuthbert came by. And now you."

She looks at each one of you in turn, peering carefully into your eyes to get a read on your character. Then she says to everyone in the room, "Bring them back. You must find them. They're only children. They've already been through so much."

She stands up, straightens her dress and says, "You have my permission to search the building. My staff will answer any questions you have. You may talk to the children, but please use discretion. Many of them have experienced great trauma, and we try not to exacerbate it." To Jaqir she adds, "Patch is in his room. He is probably only just waking up. He has been staying in the basement. You can get there through the door out back."

"Well, Jaqir, I think you should take the lead here, especially in interviewing the orphans as no one here can empathize with them like you can - at least that is my humble suggestion. In the meantime, I'd like to examine the dormitory from whence the kidnapping occurred. Would anyone like to join me? Matron Gretchen, could you point me to the scene of the kidnappings?"

" Yes Toe, I'll accompany you. Also, Matron Gretchen have the windows always been double bolted like this or all of them closed for that matter even before the kidnapping?"

Gretchen explains that the dormitories are upstairs. There's one for the boys and one for the girls. Two children were taken from each room. The boys taken were named Deakon, a dwarf, and Terrem, a human. The girls were named Lucinda and Evelyn, both human. She also explains that before the kidnappings, she would only close the shutters during a storm. The windows were bolted every night. Now, though, the children (and the staff) are too afraid to sleep with them open.

"Come, Brother Rand, come. The game is afoot!"

With that Toe walks upstairs with Rand to the dormitories. Toe being eye level to the knobs carefully examines the locks on the doors first.
OOC:
Not sure what the appropriate roll is. Let me know if perception isn't correct.

Kneeling down beside Toe.

" So Toe, what are we looking for?"
OOC:
Assist perception DC 10 = +2 added to Toes check, I'm pretty sure perception is the right one Twotonkatrucks if your searching for clues. Pathfinder wraps all search, spot and awareness rolls to just the one skill.

"I'm not sure Brother Rand. I have no idea what exactly I'm looking for but... Do you remember the riddle that Sister Jenya showed us? It mentioned something about locks being the key. And when she mentioned that the orphanage has locks installed... I don't know, I figured why not take it literally and at least take a gander at these locks. Couldn't hurt."

Toe, though not knowing much about locks, can tell that they're of quite fine craftsmanship. There are no outward indications that they have been tampered with or forced in any way, and seem to be in perfect working order. He can see on the faceplate of each of the locks a tiny stamped "G".
Aug 26, 2018 3:31 am
"Matron, of the people who came to investigate so far, have they tried looking for residual magical energies? I would like to visit the areas where the children vanished. It's unlikely at this point that I will find anything...days have passed, but it is my realm of expertise so I will start there."
Aug 26, 2018 3:46 am
To Kija, Gretchen responds, "No mages came with the guard, and the two young men who came the day before yesterday didn't check for anything of that sort. I'm so grateful to have such talented people looking for the children. Whatever you need, you just let me know."
Aug 26, 2018 4:39 am
Toe shows Rand the stamp.

"What do you think of this? Locksmith's signature no doubt? When we're done here maybe we should visit the locksmith."
OOC:
Does Toe know anything about the stamped G?

Also, +3 bonus for class skill only applies to skills I have rank in correct?

EDIT: Ha! I guess not.
Then pausing and thinking for a moment, Toe asks Rand, "Uh, do you, perchance, know whose stamp this is?"

OOC:
. Yep, you only get the +3 class bonus if you put ranks in it if we are running rules as written. Ladybrash might have house rules though right?

Dracone, not knowing much about investigations, feels a little useless here. He decides to wait by the front door in case of any visitors and have a look around.

I'm not sure what to do looking for clues so, I will remain by the front door in case of visitors or if any of you call for help.

Dracone will check the front door, windows close by and check any papers for anything he may feel is a clue. He will also stay close to the door in case of company.

Fhenryl had remained on the edge of the assembled group as was his custom, quietly scanning the room and listening in on the conversation. As the group started to spread out on their various investigative tasks, he came closer to Gretchen and asked in his hoarse, husky tone: "You mentioned a back door and a basement. Do you also have some sort of yard out back? Is it often used ? Whoever broke in may have left tracks there..."

As he waits for the halfling matron´s answer he feels a tinge of curiosity as to who may be living in the basement, but quickly checks himself: this is nothing that directly concerns him, and in any case the Red Man (i.e. Jaqir) would see to that.

Kija proceeds to the area where the female children where taken and casts Detect Magic. She intently scans the area looking for residual magical energy. When she is done there, she will moves to the boys dorms and do the same.

OOC:
Rand, you recall that there is a locksmith's shop in town called Ghelve's Locks.
Kija, you find no signs of any magic in the building.
Gretchen tells Fhenryl that there's no official "yard" out back, but there is a small wooded park behind the building, just across the street. The children often play there when the weather is nice.
Aug 26, 2018 8:25 pm
Fhen grunts his understanding and announces: "I´d better have a look there, then."

As he gets to the back door, he stops for a moment as if remembering something.
"Thanks." he snorts, before turning his back on Gretchen and making his way into the park.

Once there, he focuses his skills on examining the grounds, looking for clues.

"Thank you Brother. That information may bear some fruit in this investigation... Gods willing."

Toe nods to Kija in acknowledgement as he sees her go into the dormitories.

"Should we join the lady diviner and give the dormitories a once over?" Toe asks Rand and goes into each dormitory and take a look around looking for anything that stands out big or small, presumably with Rand.
OOC:
He's basically going to help Rand and Kija sweep the place for any kind of clues. He'll also let Kija know about what Toe and Rand found on the locks to the dormitory along with the locksmith's name.

" Good idea Toe, an extra head going over the scene could make sure we don't overlook anything. Unless of course we just prove to be in Kija's way."

Rand walks beside Toe.
OOC:
I will also cast detect magic and assist with both Toes perception roll and a Kija spellcraft check in the boy's dorm.
