Toe nods in agreement with Dracone. "That is wise sir knight. I also believe this is a delicate situation and needs to be handled with care."

He turns to Keygan after the old gnome gives us the information. "So you say it's under your shop? Are we to assume then there's an entrance somewhere around here to this enclave? And is this Kazmojen part of the said enclave?"

Fhenryl, who still has the creeper's bloodied face mushed against the wall, twisting the creature's collar in an iron grip, says between gritted teeth: "I say we take this one with us as a guide: he must know the quickest and surest way down to this fortress. As for the other..." He gives the skulk a ferocious and eloquent look, "... a couchy prison cell is far too good for the likes of him... but do as you see fit."

"Let's decide what to do with these creatures first, and then I'll tell you about Jzadirune and the Fortress. It's a bit of a long tale. Let me fetch some rope." Keygan fetches a length of rope from an upstairs closet, and you bind the skulk and dark creeper. "We should dispose of this body. I would prefer to dump it out back and explain my part in all of this before we call in the guard, if that's what you decide is best. What shall it be?"

"I will defer to the decisions of others. I know my strengths and hence my weaknesses. Matters regarding law enforcement is certainly not a strength of mine." Toe then turns to the others awaiting their decision.
Sep 26, 2018 8:55 pm
"Now that they're bound it is no matter, I suppose. I'll tell my tale and you can decide my fate at the end." Keygan walks to the bottom of the stairs and presses a hidden switch to open a small secret door, revealing a dark staircase leading down.

"This is the entrance to Jzadirune. It was once a flourishing enclave where my people would create and sell magic items throughout the region. Seventy-five years ago a terrible curse befell us -- we called it The Vanishing. Several of our crafters faded into nothingness before our eyes over the course of several days, just disappearing into non-existence. Fearing for the safety of the workers, families and customers, the enclave was shut down and has been abandoned since. There is an elevator within Jzadirune that leads down to the Malachite Fortress. The fortress was once occupiedby noble dwarven defenders, but it seems that the situation has changed."

"About three months ago, these creatures came up into my home from Jzadirune. They took me by surprise in the middle of the night, captured my beloved familiar Starbrow, and demanded information about the city. I told them what they wanted to know. When they learned I was a locksmith, they asked me to craft them a set of skeleton keys that would open any of the locks I had crafted. They threatened to torture Starbrow and to kill me if I didn't cooperate. I gave them the key, and since then they have been passing through my shop to rob and kidnap citizens, selling them off into slavery. I was not brave enough to speak up, and I didn't want to risk losing Starbrow. He's down there somewhere. I can sense him -- hungry and afraid."

"I don't know anything about this Kazmojen fellow, other than that he's the one in charge of the whole operation. He isn't anyone I know or have ever heard of, and he never set foot in my home. Only these," he says, kicking the leg of the tied skulk.

Toe takes off his hat and fidgets with his hair for a bit, "First, on behalf of our ragtag band of wannabe heroes I thank you for coming clean and providing us with this vital information. However, you're basically telling us you've traded the lives of these orphans for your pet's, Master Ghelve. I hope it weighs heavy on your conscience."

He looks at his companions and says, gesturing to the stairway down. "Shall we then?"

Keygan, I can think of nothing worse than a pure coward. I understand your initial assistance when they were in your home but, you should have gone to the authorities long ago and sought help. The damage you have helped cause has affected many lives and some of those will be scard for life. While I understand someone's attachment to a Familiar, there are those who could have freed him and prevented what you have done. I have no respect for you sir, and I hope you can make ammends to your God for your soul.

Before we decend, does everyone have what will be needed? All your weapons, armor, supplies?

Standing in a corner while watching over the two trussed and tied surviving kidnappers, Fhen growls: "Give the lockmaker a break: Familiar or not, seen through its master's eye the critter probably has more sense and its life more value than half the so-called 'people' in this pestilent hole of a city. In any case, what's done is done, no sense yapping on about it. Now, what do we do with this scum ?" He looks down on the skulk and the bloodied creeper with a mirthless smile as he muses: "If you lot really wanna leave them here, that doesn't make that much difference to me. Still, the hoofed one would make great bait to test out underground traps..." with that last chilling comment, the ranger's grin seems to grow a little more sinister.

He then appears to grow bored with the subject and starts busying himself with checking his gear to prepare for their imminent departure. "How do we organize ourselves with the light sources ?", the forest tracker asks off-handedly as he slowly and methodically inspects first a length of hempen rope he pulled from his haversack, then proceeds to tighten the straps of his lamelled leather cuirass. "Only maybe the Red One... apologies, the fire mage Jaqir..." Fhenryl makes a face as if the effort of remembering to mention names constantly was a nuisance to him, "... and also myself can see well-enough in darkness. So: what about the rest of you?"

Rand prays to his mace which begins to give off a soft white glow almost like a torch.

"This simple orison can last quite a while and I can always pray for it again. Pelor never grows bored of this trick is my theory. I should have all that I require for this trip."

Rand begins to give Ghelve a stern look.

" Even though you may have willingly or unwillingly helped these vile men, I must ask if you wish to make amends for the actions you have taken, call the guards and have these men arrested and report while we take our leave."
OOC:
"Narrator: It was then that Pagrzero realized the die roller would get him later!"

"You are all absolutely correct. I am ashamed of my participation in these events. I will call the guard, tell them my story, and ensure that these creatures are imprisoned. I have something for you that may help." Keygan hurries to one of the upstairs rooms and returns with a small scroll, dark brown in color and tied with a small strip of leather. He removes the tie and unrolls it on a table, revealing a map. "This is a map of Jzadirune. Here is the elevator down to the Malachite Fortress. The gnomes put traps on all of the gear-shaped doors. You will need to find the appropriate keys to each before you can open them. There are also many secret passageways, though they are not shown on this map. Beware the Vanishing, which seemed to be connected with magical items."
OOC:
I will post the map in the morning. I can’t do it from my phone.
Edit: POSTED! The circle is the elevator. The 'X' is the entrance from Keygan's shop.

Map is posted! What's your marching order and how would you like to proceed into the dungeon?

OOC:
I'll stick near the frontline with a tanky character that can deliver damage. I can't damage that much but I CAN make it easier for the tank to deliver damage. I also have decent AC and HPs. Maybe Dracone or Fhenryl take the front? And I'll follow them.

OOC:
I think Fhenryl could try and work his way a little bit ahead as a scout of sorts, if the group decides to use one: he's the only one that has Darkvision (besides from Jaqir, maybe? Seems like Dracone isn't a dwarf but a human after all, so no night-eyes there, I'm afraid...) and has a decent knowledge of traps and pretty high Stealth and Perception skills. Is the tunnel wide enough for two people walking side by side, or is this gonna be more of a single file walking order ?

Yep, I guess I should have said "lighted" mace in hand, my bad.

Rand looks towards Dracone with a puzzled look.

" Wait, ... I could have sworn you were shorter."

He then begins to stroke his beard worryingly. Then quickly moves his attention to check if his shield is strapped properly.

OOC:
Okay, well let 's trudge on ahead. Others will catch up as we go. I'm going to assume you head down to the bottom of the staircase. If any of you would like to do any skill checks along the way, let me know and I'll go back and handle them.
The small door under the stairs is open, revealing a stone staircase leading down into darkness. The steps are shrouded with cobwebs and dust. Peering down from where you stand at the top of the steps, you can see that it descends about twenty feet before turning to the right and plunging into darkness. Fhenryl leads the way, his keen eyes able to see at least partially in the darkness.

After the first turn, the staircase descends another twenty feet and then turns again. You move carefully and quietly down to the next landing. From here, you can hear strange sounds emanating from the chamber below: chirping birds, rustling leaves, and cheery giggles. The landing itself is bare, save for an empty iron torch sconce mounted on the south wall. The stairs descend a final twenty feet and open into a large square room.

There is barely enough light in this room to make out the dimensions of this chamber -- it seems to be about a forty foot square with a ten foot ceiling. You can feel a slight draft blowing into the room from a 10' wide passage heading out of the room directly across from the stairs. To your left are two 4' diameter circular doors made of wood and framed with a ring of mortared stones.

The farther of the two doors is closed; you can see that it bears a strange glyph. The closer door bears a different glyph but rests half-open, revealing a rim of gear-like teeth. Dim light spills from the chamber beyond the door, providing the light by which you can see this room.

Mounted to the walls of this chamber are twelve tarnished copper masks, each two feet tall and mounted about four feet above the floor. Each of the masks depicts a slightly different smiling gnome's face. The soft giggling, chirping, and rustling sounds you heard from above seem to pour from the very walls.
OOC:
Reminder that Keygan warned you about the doors being trapped, and that you'll need special keys to bypass the traps.
Oct 3, 2018 11:55 pm
Toe motions to the two doors. "Those are obviously the trapped doors Keygan mentioned." He studies the glyphs on the door, keeping his distance and taking care not to touch the doors or the glyphs. "I've heard of arcane glyphs that serve as wards against intruders or would-be thieves..."
OOC:
Toe will investigate the door, without touching them. Just examine from distance to see if there any strange mechanisms or things of that nature. Not sure if perception is the right roll. Let me know if it isn't.
