Raccoon Fight!

Sep 15, 2018 10:49 pm
OOC:
Figured with a split party, running the fight, even if it's a short one, is a good formatting choice. Is this a good idea?

Initiative Order:
Albino Group
Carlin
Large Group
Gangly Group
Chuton

The albino raccoon leaps first, leading his family of mottled fur to swarm over Chuton. They take to biting his ankles and clawing his arms with reckless abandon.

OOC:
I'm okay with splitting it.
Sep 15, 2018 11:27 pm
OOC:
Yup, makes it cleaner and easier to follow.
Sep 19, 2018 9:32 am
OOC:
Oops...sorry I spaced on my turn!
Carlin leaps onto her broom and casts a swirling spiral of blue energy about herself. A dim blue shimmering encases her form.
OOC:
Casting mage armor. Not sure how much movement it would take to get on the broom, but will use any left to go up.
Sep 19, 2018 10:12 pm
OOC:
Simply mounting a broom doesn't have any kind of action associated with it, so I'll count it as a "interact with object" kind of free action. Using state-of-the-art simulations indicate that the action in question should take no more than one second, given an easily-accessible broom.
As Carlin rises into the air, one of the groups breaks off to climb up a tree and have a better shot at her, chattering away.
The third group, led by a rotund raccoon, does its best to help the first against the big man with the sword, but likewise find no purchase in his hide for their teeth.
All are chattering. It sounds like there's a rhythm to the noise.
OOC:
Chuton is up.

Rolls

Attack - (1d20+2)

(5) + 2 = 7

Damage - (2d6)

(61) = 7

Sep 19, 2018 10:53 pm
"Cease and desist!" Chuton roars, sweeping his greatsword across to try and cleave through the small creatures. The dragonborn attempts to target the group with the albino raccoon as he assumes it to be the pack leader.
OOC:
19 total slashing damage

Chuton's strike seems set to cleave through the albino raccoon, when the others in the group swirl around him like a furry cloak. Still, Chuton manages to down a large portion of them. As his sword passes, the albino leaps out from the group alone. Missing, the rest of its group congeal back around it.
OOC:
Am I always going to roll this low?

Rolls

Attack - (1d20+2)

(5) + 2 = 7

Damage - (1d6)

(4) = 4

OOC:
I sure hope so! Is Carlin in melee range with either of the groups? I.e., will she provoke AoO if she moves?
Sep 21, 2018 12:24 am
OOC:
Currently, she is not, having flown up to a comfortable height. One group is climbing trees to get a shot at her soon, but if she goes too high, the treetops would probably obscure her aim.

Carlin narrows her eyes in concentration and sends four motes of magic swirling toward the albino raccoon.

Rolls

magic missile, 2nd level - (1d4+1, 1d4+1, 1d4+1, 1d4+1)

1d4+1 : (2) + 1 = 3

1d4+1 : (4) + 1 = 5

1d4+1 : (2) + 1 = 3

1d4+1 : (2) + 1 = 3

As Carlin's missiles hit one after the other, the raccoon starts to scream. By the time all four have found their marks, the entirety of his family is down on the ground.

The portly raccoons carry on the screaming at Carlin, before as a mass trying to hold Chuton down. Less coordinated than their fallen partners, the rear ones jump first, and trip up all of them.
The skinnier group reaches the upper branches of the tree they were climbing, and prepare to jump at the witch.
OOC:
Opposed grapple check for Chuton, then his turn.
Edit: Nevermind then...

Rolls

Grapple - (1d20-1)

(2) - 1 = 1

Sep 22, 2018 8:47 pm
Chuton attempts to avoid the takedown, using his greatsword to swipe away the raccoons and give himself some room. "This is a violation of local laws!" he roars. "I have no choice but to apply appropriate force."

Rolls

Athletics to resist Grapple - (1d20+6)

(16) + 6 = 22

Greatsword, Slashing Damage - (1d20+7, 2d6+5)

1d20+7 : (18) + 7 = 25

2d6+5 : (46) + 5 = 15

Sep 22, 2018 8:56 pm
Their huddled state makes it incredibly easy to pick them off with a well-placed swing. The only thing that stops Chuton from killing them all is the mass of bodies already being carried on his sword.
OOC:
Carlin's turn, but both Chuton and Carlin should make perception checks.
Sep 23, 2018 4:08 am
Chuton says, "Based on their behavior, I am beginning to suspect these creatures may be responsible for the slain villagers!"

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+3)

(16) + 3 = 19

Sep 24, 2018 12:00 am
Carlin replies dryly, "You don't say." She fires four more darts toward the albino raccoon before swinging her broom to the far end of the clearing from the group threatening her.

Rolls

magic missile, 2nd level - (1d4+1, 1d4+1, 1d4+1, 1d4+1)

1d4+1 : (4) + 1 = 5

1d4+1 : (3) + 1 = 4

1d4+1 : (2) + 1 = 3

1d4+1 : (3) + 1 = 4

Perception - (1d20)

(13) = 13

OOC:
Albino raccoon is down, however (you can target it or change if you want)
Both of you notice a stream of black liquid escaping the bodies of the albino raccoon and his family...
Sep 24, 2018 9:54 am
OOC:
If Carlin saw the black liquid before her action, then she would have held her action and just watched. If not, then she would have targeted the raccoons near Chuton.
Sep 24, 2018 4:32 pm
Chuton dutifully makes his report. "Evidence! Their black blood supports your observation that these are not normal raccoons."
OOC:
Is the liquid running along the ground, or through the air?
Sep 26, 2018 9:01 pm
As you watch, the black bile pouring from the bodies leaves them entirely, becoming a semi-solid wriggling mass. It seems to support itself on thin limbs of the same material about three feet off the ground, constantly shifting and dripping all over the ground under it. It slowly moves toward Chuton, though it's black mass seems to lack eyes, or features of any kind.
