How to create an investigator

Because my EDU roll was so low I've had to adjust from an FBI agent to a PI. He is out of Las Cruces and was called in by an acquaintance in the Federal Ag department.

I have the character pretty much put together except for equipment. Still waiting for a source for 1954 equipment. The rulebook I have only lists 1920's equipment. Big difference.

I'm leaning on doing a bartender for laughs. I prefer the weirder occupations, that lend themselves to a how-did-I-end-up-here attitude, rather than the professional interest ones. No idea why, since basically all it does is make it harder for me to think of why they'd be there XD

OK, a lab assistant, a boxer, a bartender and a PI. That's quite a mix. I can see the Lab assistant and the PI working the case pretty straightfowardly. Curious to see the box and bartender's approach. Are they conspiracy theorists? Some food for thought.

Below is what I came up with. Not too complicated and I think it works.

Mason met Danny while he was working at UCLA doing odd jobs while he was getting his boxing career sorted out. Mason liked the kid for not looking down on him for his job and this eventually led to their morning coffee routine which turned into a friendship. Once Mason heard what happened to Danny he felt he needed to come and check out things for himself.

I trust the boxer is a straightforward sportsman rather than something of a street thug. My character comes across more like a cop since he was military police in the Marines. He's softened a bit since working as a PI on his own but he can still have a bit of a jaundiced eye.

Yeah my boxer is a good hearted tough guy who befriended a smart kid. When he heard what happened to his friend, he decided to come check things out for himself. To him, it was the right thing to do.

I'm thinking our characters, the PI and the Boxer, will get along well then. Mason, my character, would respect the military service and the more down to earth your PI character is the more Mason can relate to him.

I'm thinking of switching mine up a bit to a valet or personal assistant type. Any takers? If I end up running with the bartender, I might say she was a childhood friend of the guy and hadn't seen him in several years, so when she heard about the accident she came running.

I've wondered for years why people prefer to play characters that are mostly outside the parameters of the game as described by the GM. I play in another game that is placed in a medieval setting but one of the characters is a bard who speaks in 21st century street lingo. We here have been asked to create investigators who are looking into a strange incident and not curiosity seekers. It's pretty much a given that friends and family of the victim will show up to the accident scene if they are able to do so. The question is how would they have found out about the accident and made their way to the scene before the investigation has even started? Remember it's 1954. There are no cell phones, no internet. National TV news was only televised 30 minutes each day. There is no instant information. The first people who would learn about the situation would be medical personnel, police and investigators called in by the police. No one else would learn of it for at least a couple of days unless it was immediate family and then only after police and medical people have been at the scene for awhile. Enough of my rant. Please think about this.

So looks like Bleak has left the game. I'm cool with playing any type of investigator. I'm new still new at all this and I am still looking forward to participating in this game. Maybe my boxer had a fight in town and while here he was going to look his old friend up. On his way back from his fight he saw the accident and the vehicle looked all too familiar. Just a thought. If I need to change my character that's cool too. Just let me know.

OK, we're 9 days without a post. Is this game going to start up or is it dead in the water? I can only have 10 games so if we're not playing here then I need to create some room.
