Delve #1

Nov 11, 2018 5:32 pm
Intro:

You enter the upstairs room of the village inn. The fireplace is stacked, and the heat is excessive. Yet the gaunt looking man who meets you is wrapped in his cloak. His face is partially hidden by the upturned collar: what you can see is an aquiline nose and a pair of dark eyes. The sickly eyes of a man driven to the limits by his obsessions.

This is Alois Helbrun, the lawful inheritor of the Hornfell Estate. Your employer.

"Good day to you, gentlemen," he says in a hoarse voice. "As you can see, I am of feeble health. Unfit to face the dangers that are rumored to infest my family’s seat. That is why I require your assistance.

"You are to explore the Estate. Find out just what exactly is going on inside. What are these perils the villagers are so afraid of.

"The payment: twenty gold coins per person, for every day you spend exploring the ruins. Paid when you return and report to me. After that, it is possible that I will send you on more errands, depending on the information you gather.

"I am also willing to pay a bonus for books from the personal collection of Manfried Hornfell. These valuable tomes bear his stamp,"
and here he shows you a battered, charred book. The first page is adorned with a large mark, depicting an eagle’s talon grabbing a sword by the blade.

"These books must be brought to me. All other objects – valuables, heirlooms, luxuries – are yours to take. I have no interest in them. A fair compensation for the risks you take."

With this, Alois turns back towards the roaring fireplace.

"Off you go now, gentlemen. I… need to rest."
In the village, people eye you with suspicion. If asked questions about the Estate, they mostly just shrug and turn away. "We don’t go there. It is a cursed place," some whisper.

"You know, you are not the first adventurer types to fall for the shiny coins of that Helbrun creep. There were others, before you. Adventurer types. They never made it back," a talkative old man says. "Or they just ran off with the money that dupe gave them!" he adds, and bursts out in laughter. "I bet he is not paying anything in advance anymore, is he? Huh? Huh?"
The next morning you follow a small road from the village to the Estate’s wrought iron gates. A twenty minute uphill hike, through dense forests.

The Estate is bigger than you imagined. A vast, sprawling complex of ruins. They occupy the top of a ragged cliff, reaching its limits on the east. From the distance the complex seems to balance on the very edge of the rocks, some two hundred feet above the dark waters of Lake Hornsee. Many walls still stand. Towers claw at the cloudy grey sky. Charred roof beams exposed: like the ribs of a dead creature. Blackened by fire and smoke, overgrown with vines and weeds.

Indeed, a haunting scenery.

But what will you find inside?

And so it begins.

With a black building, silhouetted against the overcast sky.

You enter the Estate's grounds. To the north, there is a garden, with hedgerows and topiaries, tall trees, now all reverted to wild and natural growth. Perhaps, something to explore at a later point?

You slowly approach the main building. It's a grandiose, but chaotic structure. Its parts were erected in different styles, in different centuries, and seemingly no Hornfell cared much for the architectural taste of their predecessors.

Some parts of the Estate are two or three storey high, with hanging corridors and bridges criss-crossing the air between them. Most windows on the ground floor are boarded up. The roofs collapsed.

The obvious access point is the main entrance in the middle. The massive door lays shattered on the ground. Through the doorway you glimpse the interior: a spacious hall, with half-collapsed staircase on the central axis.

The paved road that leads to the main entrance then continues to the right. It connects to a taller gateway, set between two parts of the building. It is possible that the gateway was used as an entrance for carriages or coaches, and leads to an inner courtyard.

Everything is eerily silent. There is only the sound of the wind blowing from the direction of the lake.
Nov 12, 2018 7:10 pm
Elias gestures around him. Blood drips down the man's arm, drawn by the metal cilice bound to his upper arm, pushing inwardly-pointing barbs into his flesh. The man's mad gesturing sends droplets of blood flying everywhere. "Behold: the products of all men's hubris, all our so-called accomplishments, all crumbles to dust. All of this striving for mortal riches and pleasures is meaningless. All that is pure and true can only be attained by casting off this sinful flesh!"

"hmmm... I'd rather like to keep mine if it's all the same to you Brother Elias."

Sarrgul tightens the cinch on his robes before rummaging through his pack, he produces a tome bound in a dark leather with runes etched across it's surface. Whispering a quick incantation a shadow falls over Sarrgul before blending into his cloth leaving it a shade darker than before. Pulling a small sprig of green leaves from a hidden pouch he chants while moving his fingers in an intricate pattern, his quarter staff glows a bright green momentarily before the light subsides to a faint shimmer.

Albrecht takes a look around at the scenery, then his fellow travelers. Of course he had to end up with the weirdos, he thinks to himself. This expedition is doomed, just like the ones that preceded it and the ones that most likely will follow. The trick is to know when to call it quits, just like with gambling or a love affair gone south. Hit this place, grab as much loot as possible and make a run for it.
"Gimme a moment. Don't wanna die before we even enter."
Albrecht cautiously approaches the main entrance and checks for traps
OOC:
Not sure whether you'd call for Perception or Investigation on such an occasion, so just rolling a d20. Perception bonus is +3, Investigation is +2

Searching for traps - (1d20)

What is death but another doorway Brother Albrecht?
Nov 13, 2018 10:08 pm
Into the halls of death we go, to slay the monster blow by blow, or fall us all if we’re to slow.
Nov 14, 2018 9:25 am
Albrecht goes through the standard motions, checks for tripwires or pressure plates, but he is constantly distracted by his companions' existential banter... The entrance seems clear, though, and no traps or other nasty surprises go off when one of you crosses the threshold.

You are met by a spacious hall. The roof has collapsed, and several heavy, charred beams descend diagonally (their upper parts are still attached to the edges of the tall walls, but their broken sections touch the floor). There is much debris and fallen bricks on the ground, but under them you see that the floor is covered with marble slabs, in a black and white checkerboard pattern.

The hall is quite tall, taking up almost two storeys of the building. To the left, a small balcony protrudes from the wall, at the level of the second floor.

Opposite the entrance, there is a wide staircase, leading to the second floor. The steps are covered with a thick, rotting crimson carpet. The banisters are crumbling.

In the corners of the hall, on the two sides of the staircase, there are two marble statues, depicting athletic nude male bodies. They wear helmets, and turn their faces towards the staircase (and each other). The statues are huge: their heads reach up to the top of the stairs.

On the right hand wall, in the middle, there is an open entrance to a neighbouring room. From what you can see, it too must be a big hall. The passage is framed by an exquisitely carved stone portal. A vile stench emanates from this direction. Elias, acolyte of the flesh, easily recognizes it as the smell of rotting meat...

In the far left corner, next to the base of the statue, there is a door. It is currently closed.
Nov 14, 2018 1:34 pm
Sarrgul chants softly, his right hand closed tightly into a fist while he circles his left around it. Opening his hand, several feet away a spectral luminescent hand appears, reaching out slowly the hand moves to the door before settling on the pull. Are you prepared Brothers, to see what awaits us in this crumbling ruin?
OOC:
Unless the hall is longer than 30 feet, which is the range of mage hand. In which case the hand lasts a minute and I will use it on the door when we are closer.

"We are like worms burrowing into this carcass to pick it clean from inside" Elias cackles, "But what carrion feeders are already in residence, grown fat and ravenous?" He holds aloft the holy instrument of his purification: three, spiked iron orbs chained to a rough metal rod - the flail's handle is also spiked so the wielder bleeds. Dark blood drips onto Elias' upturned face as he murmurs, "My blood protects me from the wicked. By my blood I am sanctified."

Albrecht does his best to not pay much attention to the ramblings of Elias and Sarrgul's flair for the grandiose. Funny how Jingles the Jester is the person he feels he can mostly relate to. Still, with Sarrgul's magical hand of light reaching for the door, he immediately assumes his position next to it, out of sight and out of light. Safe from whatever might lie inside, while also prepared to strike at it from the darkness.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+4)

(3) + 4 = 7

Nov 15, 2018 3:01 pm
Sarrgul motions with is hand and the spectral hand moves to the handle pulling to see if it will open.
Nov 16, 2018 9:52 am
You all hold your breaths as the eerie disembodied hand reaches the handle and pulls. The door isn't locked, and opens to a crack.

Albrecht, who stands ready nearby, hears a click, and notices, peering at the crack, that a rope is attached to the bottom part of the door. It lays on the floor, still somewhat loose, but further movement of the door would stretch it.
Nov 16, 2018 1:30 pm
"Hold it! Don't move that door any further!"
Albrecht moves into position, using whatever he can as a wedge to make sure the door remains steady while holding out a hand to signal the others should wait and keep their distance. He then prepares his tools as he examines the trap, looking for the best way to disable it.

Rolls

Investigation (figure out how the trap works and how it should be disarmed) - (1d20+2)

(11) + 2 = 13

Thieves' Tools (Dexterity+Proficiency bonus, to disarm the trap) - (1d20+4)

(6) + 4 = 10

Nov 16, 2018 2:37 pm
Albrecht examines the contraption. It's a simple mechanism: the rope stretches when the door is pulled, and triggers something.

Cutting the rope would certainly disable it, and this is exactly what Albrecht does.

The door is now safe to open - but what other dangers lies ahead?

Albrecht sees that a corridor after the door. It has no windows, and its low ceiling is intact, making the place dim. There are two closed doors on the left wall, and a single open doorway on the right wall.

In the middle of the corridor, a crossbow is propped up. The cut rope connects to it.

Despite the dimness, Albrecht notices that there is a dark, smeared trace on the floor, approx. 2' wide. It starts somewhere from the farther end of the corridor, than stops at the first closed left-side door. Something was dragged there.

The corridor goes for about 60', then ends in a T-junction, with passages leading to the left and the right.

Rolls

Wisdom (Perception) check for Albrecht - (1d20+3)

Nov 16, 2018 2:59 pm
Once Albrecht has the door wedged open, the hand dissipates like mist on a sunny morning.

Good catch Brother Albrecht, caution is our ally. Ancient traps lie in wait, unsprung and thirsting for blood.
Nov 19, 2018 8:46 am
Albrecht cuts the rope and slowly steps into the room, motioning with his hand to the others that it's now safe to approach. As Sarrgul comes closer, he shows the trace of smeared blood on the floor to the occultist.
"I don't know about traps, but something was certainly thirsting for blood here."
As the rest of the group enter the corridor, Albrecht heads towards the middle, looking to remove the crossbow and carry it as his own weapon moving forward.
Nov 19, 2018 10:07 am
The trap was fashioned out of a standard light crossbow, which Albrecht now takes possession of. The weapon is worn, but in working condition. There are five notches cut into the wooden stock. Obviously, there is just a single bolt.

A small bell was also attached to the crossbow, to make some extra alarm noise when the trap goes off: Albrecht mutes and removes it.

The smears indeed look like blood. The traces are dry and blackened, not fresh, but probably not more than a day old either.
Nov 19, 2018 1:26 pm
Whomever was kind enough to leave the cross bow is still near, the bell can only be heard from so far away. Perhaps we lay our own trap Brothers.
Nov 19, 2018 2:02 pm
"We ring the bell, and fall upon whomever comes. But who is the intruder here, we or they?" Elias cackles.

"We still have the element of surprise. Let us not give them the time to prepare before our paths cross."

As you say Brother Albrecht

Sarrgul looks through his tome one more time before falling in line with the others.
Nov 21, 2018 6:53 pm
OOC:
So, what is your course of action?
Ringing the bell and waiting,
or going forward, exploring one of the rooms?
There are two closed doors on the left side (the one that's closer to you has the blood traces leading to it) and an open doorway on the right side.
Nov 21, 2018 6:58 pm
Elias wanders over to the open doorway.
Nov 21, 2018 11:07 pm
Sarrgul follows.
Nov 22, 2018 8:20 am
Jingles also clinks alone behind Elias.
Nov 22, 2018 8:28 am
Albrecht sighs at the apparent lack of leadership in the group, but it's not like he's willing to take up the mantle himself. Elias may be a fanatic, but at least he doesn't lack conviction. Might as well follow the raving madman and hope for the best; either way, if things go south, he'll be ready to bail.

Rolls

Sneaking up to the doorway - (1d20+4)

(5) + 4 = 9

Nov 22, 2018 5:18 pm
Elias takes the lead. As he gets close to the open doorway, he hears a strange sound: like the flapping of a gigantic bird wing. He takes a peek inside, and there is indeed something bird-like, suspended mid-air for a moment. Then he realizes, that this "wing" is an enormous piece of fabric, a long but narrow flag, in the colors of the Hornfell family, black and red.

The flag is being "flown" by two people, who stand at two sides of the wide hall, 30 feet apart. They hold the two ends of the fabric, let it dangle loosely, then lift their hands to wave and fly it, like two servants shaking off breadcrumbs from a tablecloth.

Elias is mesmerized by this movement.

But then he notices that the two figures he took to be servants are not exactly... people.

They are dressed in black-and-red servant's uniforms, right. But above the yellowed frill collars their faces are rotten, flesh rended to the skull. Their eye sockets are hollow and empty.

A third figure, in similar clothes, stands closer to the entrance, with its back turned.

The two servants repeat the process of flying the flag, as if stuck in an endless loop. They don't seem to have noticed you yet.
The room they are in is about 50 feet wide and at least a 100 long. There are no windows, but, since the ceiling of the room collapsed in places, some light seeps through from the levels above. On the opposite wall, there is another doorway, leading further. A closed door is on the left wall. A row of cupboards line the right wall.

The two skull-faced servants with the flag are standing in the middle of the hall, 35 feet from the entrance you are at.

The third servant is 20 feet from the entrance.

Wisdom (Perception) check for Butler - (1d20)

Nov 22, 2018 9:19 pm
Albrecht can't help but curl a lip in disappointment. Of course it had to be undead. Not much use his blades or arrows can be of against such monsters who lack flesh and organs.
"Elias, we will rely on your flail for this one. Sarrgul, see if you can muster any helpful magicks. And Jingles... do whatever it is you do. I'll try to move into position so we can flank them" he whispers to his group.

A bloody sigil hovers above the Butler. Elias charges into the room, and attacks the closest undead... but misses. His swing goes wild, and Elias is unable to stop the heavy flail: he loses balance, and falls prone.

The attack alerts the creatures, who now all turn towards the intruders.

But they are not ready to fend for themselves yet... Make every action count!
You have a bonus surprise round.

Elias already acted. He is currently prone (due to Fumble (1) on the Attack roll).

"Butler" is the undead closest to you. Servant #1 is the undead to your left. Servant #2 is the undead to your right.

Seeing Elias miss and fall down, Albrecht aims the crossbow he picked up previously at the Butler and pulls the trigger in hopes of making the most of the distraction. He then drops the weapon to the ground and circles around in order to get close to the Butler, hopefully in a flanking position, but always sticking to the wall and shadows.
OOC:

Jingles swiftly moves into the room - elegant and deadly, and lashes at the Servant with his whip. The creature's reaction is dull, and the thin leather stripe slashes a chunk out of its already decaying flesh. The crackling aura generated by Jingles' second spell encircles it.

Albrecht discharges the crossbow, but the bolt doesn't connect. The Butler's reactions seem swifter than the slow movements of the two Servants. As it turns, you notice that it's wearing a crudely carved wooden mask on its face. After this attempt, Albrecht reaches a nook at the wall, and becomes one with the shadows. Who knows where he will strike next?

Sarrgul reaches into the depth of a mysterious void, and pulls forth an energy none less blasphemous than the creatures you are fighting. The eldritch blast hits the undead in the chest.

Immaterial tendrils, like black smoke, spiral out from under the torn and slashed uniform of the Butler, and engulf Elias, reach down his nostrils and mouth... An acrid, foul taste, the vapors of a blasphemous abomination! A strain on both body and psyche!
Surprise round over! Next turn! Jingles is up first, then the enemies, than the rest of the team.

Elias at the start of his turn must make a DC 10 Constitution check, or be Poisoned until the start of his next turn (Disadvantage on attack and ability rolls). On a successful saving throw, he is immune to this effect for the next 24 hours.

Albrecht is Hidden, and has Advantage on his attack roll against any of the enemy creatures.

Initiative order:

11 Butler, Servant #1, Servant #2
10 Albrecht, Elias
1 Sarrgul
OOC:
Was Sarrgul's attack against "the farthest butler" against Servant #1 or Servant #2?

Jingles strikes once more. The Servant stumbles as the whip and the searing magic cut deep into its body. The power of Jingles' attack should be enough to bring it down-----but it remains standing, and raises its claw-like hands. How do you kill something that's not alive?!

Elias takes 9 slashing damage and 7 bludgeoning damage.

Elias has Bardic Inspiration (1d6) (can be applied to one of the following saving throws)

Seeing the skeleton closest to him crumble to the ground, Albrecht alters his original plan and sneaks up behind the remaining enemies just as they're being distracted by Elias.
OOC:
Assuming the Butler is still alive after Elias' attack, Albrecht will move to flank him, draw his rapier as part of the move and strike down the Butler. If the blow from Elias fells the Butler, Albrecht will attack the remaining servant instead. In any case, he will then use Cunning Action to disengage and move as far away "up north" as he can.

Edit: Forgot to roll with advantage due to being hidden, though a total of 20 from the first roll should be enough.

On his back, Elias laughs maniacally when the Butler rakes its claws across the flagellant's flesh. Hot, burning blood gushes from the wounds and sprays the undead servitor.

"By my blood this place will be cleansed!!!"
Elias reacts to the Butler's attack with his own foul secretions... The flagellant's fiery blood leaves charred marks all over the creature's body.

Elias is covered in blood and viscera - a visage no less terrifying, than the undead minions you face in this ancient hall! The Flagellant brings down his flail against the creature: cleanse the flesh! Purge the rot!
DarK_RaideR says:

Albrecht reappears from the shadows, and delivers a strike with deadly precision. When the Highwayman steps up to attack the creature, black, smoke-like tendrils reach towards him - but luckily Albrecht is already retreating, and avoids the miasmatic aura of the Butler.

The Butler roars, foul black blood sprouts from its multiple wounds; yet it still stands, despite the combined onslaught. But the lesser Servants are defeated.

The Butler's monstrous roar is cut in half as Jingles' whip circles around his throat and yanks him to the floor.

The creature's body twitches involuntarily, in its death throes, then finally stops.

The black tendrils, however, still coil around the fallen Butler... They seem to "grow" straight out from its' body, protruding from the cuts and tears of its' tattered uniform. Sarrgul watches their movements with fascination.

In the silence that sets in after the arcane thunders and battlecries, Albrecht hears a shuffling from above: somebody (or something) on the floor above you was alerted by the noises, and moves away.
The room they are in is about 50 feet wide and at least a 100 long. There are no windows, but, since the ceiling of the room collapsed in places, some light seeps through from the levels above. On the opposite wall, there is another doorway, leading further. A closed wooden door is on the left wall. A row of cupboards line the right wall.

Albrecht recovers the crossbow bolt. It's still usable.

Most of the cupboards hold tablecloths, curtains, flags. The textiles are all tattered, dirty and burnt, but folded ideally, and stored in perfect order.

The last cupboard is a dining cabinet. There are stacks of broken and chipped china plates. Albrecht also finds three boxes of silverware: these might be of value, at least because of the material, but also because, as far the Highwayman can appraise, they are exquisitely worked.
Dec 5, 2018 9:11 am
Albrecht is well aware he cannot hope to carry the boxes of silverware around and fight with such baggage, let alone trying to be stealthy with all that stuff clanging about. Still, he might be able to make something out of this stash...

Slaughter for profit seems to be the motivation here Brother Elias, profit and cleansing the land of corruption. Surely your spirit can rest easy with that knowledge.

Sarrgul smiles and what looks like a small worm like tendril moves under his skin, or maybe it's just a trick of the light.

We should press on Brothers with caution of course.

Sarrgul stares into the abyss.

The narrow corridor leading to the left just seems to be going on and on, its end once more fading into darkness outside Sarrgul's demonically enhanced field of vision.

But he does get a better understanding of what's there. There are closed wooden doors on the right hand wall of the left corridor. From the current vantage point, Sarrgul can see 4 in total. They are equally spaced, each about 20' from the other. The first one is 60' down the corridor from where you're standing.
Dec 10, 2018 1:59 pm

As you wish Brother Elias, there are four doors along the right hand of the passage they seem to be evenly spaced if we follow the passage to the left. It does continue beyond even my sight. Which way would you have me lead us Brothers?
Dec 11, 2018 8:34 am
"I would rather head left. Too many doors means we could find ourselves surrounded and overwhelmed. I could scout ahead if you want, stay in the shadows some distance from torchlight and check for traps or enemies."

All these lefts and rights... Sorry if my descriptions are confusing! I will try to work on them.

LEFT HAND CORRIDOR: with 4 doors on its right wall.
RIGHT HAND CoRRIDOR: corridor goes on for about 40', then turns right.

I assume Albrecht wants to scout the right hand corridor, that has no doors, just the turn.

Albrecht silently slides down the corridor to the right. The walls and floors are made of the same roughly-worked stones, and nothing really stands out.

He reaches the spot where the corridor makes a turn to the right. Albrecht is now at the very edge of the torchlight. He carefully checks what's around the corner: the corridor goes on for 10', then terminates in a flight of steps leading downwards. It is too dark to make out anything else.
Dec 12, 2018 11:42 am
Albrecht returns and relays his findings to the group.
"Catacombs and dungeons below are probably more dangerous the deeper down we go. Will it be that or the doors back there?"

Jan 3, 2019 8:56 am
Albrecht sneaks over to the closest door. Without the torchlight, the Highwayman has to rely on tactile sensations and instinct.

It is a sturdy wooden door, reinforced with iron. It is kept closed by a horizontal metal bar. There is also a rusty lock, with the key in it.
Jan 3, 2019 9:25 am
Albrecht will wait for the rest of the group to catch up with him and will then try to gently turn the key, hoping it's not rusted to the point of breaking.
OOC:
How thick/heavy is the horizontal metal bar? Would it require something like a Strength check to lift it?
Jan 3, 2019 9:31 am
The metal bar is sturdy, but relatively light. An average person can lift it.

Albrecht gently manipulates the key. Luckily, it turns without breaking. There is a click, and the mechanism unlocks.
Jan 3, 2019 3:23 pm
Sarrgul falls in behind Albrecht to be able to see beyond the door once opened.

The room is in stark contrast with the bleak and rough corridor. It is a small space, granted - 20' by 20', but well-furnished, clean and tidy. And the light! There is a window opposite the entrance, overlooking a small courtyard. The bright sunshine coming from the outside illuminates the whole room.

The interior includes a bed with embroidered covers, a large chest next to the bed, and a writing desk with several small drawers. There is a painting easel in the far right corner, with an empty canvas. On a stand next to it there are various paints, brushes, oils in jars.
Framed paintings hang on the walls. Most of them are landscapes, with views of Lake Hornsee and the mountains of the surrounding area. One painting depicts the Hornfell Estate, the very building you are exploring now, but before its destruction.

When Elias steps in, he is overcome with a weird sensation. His superior attentiveness lets him notice a vibration or shifting in the air. A human silhouette, barely visible, flickers before his eyes, but then it's gone.

There is a small set of books on the desk, neatly stacked, which Sarrgul inspects. Most of them are popular romances and poetry.

The last book in the pile is, however, a journal. The title page is signed by one Gedeon Hornfell. Sarrgul flips through the pages. The journal entries are painfully boring and mundane. They detail daily walks in parks, the anticipation of meeting with a lady called Sophia.

The last entry is from 12 years ago: "Lovely weather today, not a cloud in sight! After supper, I plan to go up to Father's observatory. I want to see the stars. On a night as clear as this, you can almost reach them! I hope Father won't be there to sour my joy."
Jan 13, 2019 12:20 pm
Albrecht hastily wipes himself clean from as much of the paint as he can, then proceeds to open the chest and drawers.
Jan 14, 2019 3:07 pm
This journal may be of interest to our patron.

Sarrgul slides the journal into his bag.
Jan 15, 2019 5:26 pm
Albrecht's search turns up more drawing implements (chalk, charcoal, ink and quills), stacks of papers with sketches of landscapes and portraits (mostly of a fair-looking young lady), but also a small pouch of gold coins.

The chest next to the bed holds neatly folded clothes, sewn from very nice materials, silk kerchiefs, and a set of ornate brooches and pins. The Highwayman's trained eyes quickly appraise the brooches and pins - these small items might be worth about 30 gold pieces.

Jan 15, 2019 11:02 pm
Elias has no interest in money and baubles. He stands in the center of the room, wondering about the presence that he feltupon entering.
Jan 16, 2019 8:19 am
Albrecht finishes up his looting, making sure he hasn't left any details unchecked. "Right, think we're done here. On to the next room?"
Jan 16, 2019 2:23 pm
Yes Brother Albrecht, let's continue.
Jan 17, 2019 11:02 am
The group leaves the room, and is back in the confines of the narrow, dark, bleak passage.

The next door is 20' down the corridor.

It is also a sturdy wooden construction, kept closed by a metal bar and a lock with the key in it. It must be some sort of a standard solution for this part of the mansion?

As you get closer, you can discern sounds: muffled sobbing and mumbling coming from behind the door.
"No... please... no, no... no... no...
Jan 17, 2019 11:59 am
"Sounds like a trap" says Albrecht, trying to prevent his allies from grabbing the key and rushing into the room. "Let me do a quick scan first, make sure you don't get struck by lightning or something if you grab that key."

The Flagellant flings the door open.

The sobbing and crying ceases instantly. The room is uninhabited.

The door opens to a room, 20' by 20', and eerily similar to the previous one - or perhaps identical? - but most of the furniture is smashed and upturned. The bed's mattress is bloody. The table's legs are broken. The canvas on the stand was slashed violently. The chest next to the bed was flipped over, and the exquisite clothes are torn to shreds. Dried mud and dirt soils the floor.

Outside the single window opposite the door, it's dusk.
