Into the Barrier Peaks

Cædwyn peers curiously at the workmanship of the doors, thinking that perhaps it's Dwarven in origin, some clan lost to time. Mostly to himself he says, "Interesting, I've never seen workmanship such as this. It looks ... valuable." The one thing he was not expecting was an empty room though. "Hmm, be cautious. Something opened this door. There is no one here to 'greet' us. That means we're walking into a trap." He stands in center of the closed double door, prepared to take the brunt of whatever is on the other side.

"Are you all able to see alright? Let me know if not. Stay close to me - It won't do to get separated in a place like this." Ilwyn warns as she takes the lead of the party, proceeding inside with the druid and beckoning the others to follow. "Caedwyn is correct. We were invited inside, and that does not bode well, given what Etna sensed within. Still... An entire cavern made of steel? That seems absurd. I can't even begin to fathom how one might go about making such a place."

Taking a deep breath in and shutting her eyes, Etna focuses her mind. She feels the rush of wind almost inside her head, and the soft touch of some spirit of the wild pressing on the barrier between its existence and Etna's. It seemed ill at ease in this place. Even now, she was never quite sure how this worked, only that it did. These breaths of nature always seem eager to aid her when the need arises. Making her intention clear in her mind, an otherworldly warmth spreads behind her eyelids, and when they open, the darkness peels away in front of her like a tenebrous curtain being gently drawn back.

Hraefn nodded at Caedwyn's observation. "Yes, strange that the outer door should open without rhyme or reason, but not the inner door. If there were to be things coming out, both would open, or at least the inner one would first, before the outer. It must mean it is activating for entry, not egress. " Hraefn looked back to see if there was a mechanism to close the outer door from the inside.

Moving in to examine the walls of this strange place, you all have the same, eerie feeling. It is as if the doors opened to beckon you into the mouth of a metal monster, and yet you can find no way to open the inner door, much less how the outer door opened. The walls are cool to the touch, as one might expect in the cool reaches of the upper peaks, but as you press your hand to it you can feel an almost imperceptible vibration, as if you were in a mouth that was humming joyously at the delicacies it now enjoyed.

Furrowing your brows, you continue the search, when suddenly the light coming from outside is extinguished. Whirling to see what foul magic turned out the sun, you are surprised to see the outer door has slid silently shut. Before you can react to this new puzzle, the floor seems to amplify the vibration you had been feeling and with a clang, the door before you parts, revealing the interior.

The hallway before you is wide, roughly 20' and opens into a large chamber ahead. That chamber has 20' wide hallways running off in each of the cardinal directions, but what is most intriguing is what dominates the center of the otherwise empty room. A mine shaft of some sort stands in the center. On the left and right can be seen what look like rungs of a ladder spaced about 8' apart. They are not set into the walls of the shaft, but are on some sort of a metallic track. The way op us sealed off by the roof, but the way down is open.

In addition to the mine shaft, you also see several normal-sized doors. But the doors are unlike anything you have seen before, being more like the portals that led you in here than a door with handles that you are accustomed to using. Each of these doors have a little panel on the right, and a small slot about 3-inches wide and 1-inch high.

"More strange doors. I'm guessing these 'handles' off to one side require some kind of key to open them." Hraefn spoke his thoughts out loud. "Shall we search this level first before attempting to go down the mineshaft?"

I pull out a ball bearing and roll it in my hand. Perhaps I should toss this down the shaft, in case something is waiting for us to turn our backs?

Cædwyn rushes into the room as the door opens, massive sword held out in front of him. The emptiness seems worse to him than being greeted by slavering monstrosities, and the 'aliveness' of this metal place worries him greatly.

He nods at Hraefn, "Aye, no sense in heading down there before knowing what's up here, though we won't get far until we can figure out how to make these doors work for us." Looking at Bram he asks, "Can you tell if we're being watched? Magically perhaps?"

In response to Caedwyn Bram speaks up, "I could detect magic again to see if there's anything ensorceled here or even down that shaft." He stands at the doorway waiting for all the other stronger types to move in ahead of him.

"Let us go deeper into the cave, straight ahead. See if we can get to the source of the problem." Hraefn let the two most heavily armoured ones move ahead of him, but he positioned himself to be able to scout or transform at a moment's notice.

DM, what is the ceiling height, approximately?
Mar 16, 2019 11:55 am
Cædwyn nods, and proceeds down the corridor.
Mar 16, 2019 2:42 pm
Ilwyn nods as well and takes up position next to Caedwyn, looking around her with a look of distinct discomfort as they proceed. "All this metal doesn't sit well with me. Who could've built something this complex? I can't even fathom where you'd find the resources..."
Mar 16, 2019 9:27 pm
OOC:
The ceiling height is about 15 feet. I will need marching order for 20' wide as well as 10' wide. Also, Tell me how you will be proceeding down the corridors. Slow? Normal? Fast? What are you going to generally be doing? Stopping at each door you find? I will be posting regularly updated maps so you will see where you have been.

Lastly, try to be specific in movement. 'I walk around to the right of the shaft'... 'I go to the left side of the corridor to look at the second door'... etc, so if I want to spring a deadly surprise on you, I will know exactly where you all are. :D

My apologies, I should have asked for this earlier so as to not waste time.

With seemingly no swarms of plant-men or beasts, nor of intelligent life controlling their production, Hraefn was intent to penetrate deeper until they could find the source that created the monstrosities.
OOC:
Suggest Caedwyn and Ilwyn in front for 20' wide, Merri and Etna behind, Hraefn and Bram centre? If single file, then in that order as well. Normal speed going past corridors and rooms, but slow when reaching forks and junctions? No need to search locked rooms yet until we find the way to open them, for now we try to reach the centre of place to look for the sources or the controls?

OOC:
If it isn’t too dark, Merri would do well stealthing ahead to scout. If it’s dark I can’t see though.

Bram will proceed slowly on the right side within a long step of the right wall. He will stop if those in front stop otherwise he will continue until he reaches a door in the right wall.
