OOC:
what sounds good? I guess I should clarify- I need your full marching order. 😎
Jan 9, 2019 3:48 am
Having completed his short conversation with the rabbit, Hraefn found himself a bit behind the rest, and moved a little faster just to catch up. "A little bunny tells me this creature eats alligators. And we can see what else ser Merriweather can uncover." Hraefn kept his voice low, even though they were still a distance away. "If need be, I can aid in first lighting up the beast more clearly when we are nearer, after which I will adopt a form more suited to engaging the beast."
OOC:
Hraefn is still last in marching order.

Etna
Pausing a moment to get your bearings, your senses reach out. You absorb the sights, sounds and smells of the surrounding land, which is heavy with the pungent smell of stagnant water and mud. Insects buzz around you, swooping low to your ear before darting away at the brush of your hand. Flocks of birds nest in the surrounding trees, their calls barking out and rolling over and through you as you seek to find what might lie in the area.

When you finally relax, you are confident that no dragons or monstrosities lie within the nearest 5 miles or so.
Jan 9, 2019 3:20 pm
Etna cheery demeanor suddenly sours. "Hmm. Either this beast is very far from here, or its much worse than I thought. Guard yerselves."
Jan 9, 2019 4:06 pm
Cædwyn grumbles, "Or this is a wild goose chase...."
Jan 9, 2019 4:18 pm
Ilwyn claps Caedwyn on the shoulder. "Too late for that, there's already coin on it." She strides forward and rolls her neck, working out the last of the stiffness from riding. "Can you track the old-fashioned way, Etna? If so, it may be best to take point. I'll stand with you."
OOC:
Ilwyn will take the front if no-one else is. If someone else comes to the front to do the tracking, she'll walk beside them.

OOC:
Merriweather and Etna are in the front, followed by Ilwyn and Cato, Bram and then Hraefn. Agreed?
Jan 9, 2019 11:41 pm
Turning to Ilwyn, her enthusiasm reappears. "I'll give it a go." She falls to one knee, and begins searching for signs in the muck.
OOC:
Yes to the marching order. Making a survival check to track the beast. (If it is a monstrosity or dragon, I get advantage, but if it turns out to be something else just take the first roll.)
Edit: Or not haha they're both the same

Etna
Looking carefully as you move slowly forward, at first you don't see much more than normal animal traffic. However, soon you begin to spy small signs of something different. Bits of animal here, breaks of reeds and bushes there. Soon they become more noticeable, leading you on a slowly winding route toward the large bend in the river.

At one point you find a full impression of a foot. From the look of it, the beast must be enormous, in-line with an adult dragon, but much different in its shape. It is humanoid, with four huge appendages that end in what are certainly massive claws. Based on your experience, this creature must surely top 10 feet tall, perhaps reaching closer to 20 feet; additionally its weight must be incredible if the depth of the impression is any guide.

The trail you are following leads into the swampy trees and thick reeds along the river approximately 50 yards ahead.
OOC:
I will be posting an area map later tonight.

"Will we require aid? Or do we think ourselves sufficient for the task? I can summon aid from the creatures of the land if need be." Hraefn spoke quietly from the back. "If one of my animal friends take care of the beast though, the coin bet might just have to go to it," Hraefn's newfound sense of humour was aimed drily at Caedwyn and Ilwyn.
Jan 10, 2019 1:48 am
Cædwyn grins at Hraefn, "If so perhaps it should come from your purse then," then adds, "I say we try the take the creature ourselves though. Unless the creatures you can summon happen to be of the 'on fire' variety."
Jan 10, 2019 2:21 am
"I can, but they'd be very small fires." Hraefn smiled. "Very well, let us at least see what manner of creature it is before we decide."

Moving slowly forward, Etna in front with Merriweather right behind her, you all make your way closer to the river. While the ground is mostly firm, there are occasional areas where you sink almost to your shin before you manage to struggle your way out of the gripping mud.

As you move through the trees and tall, thick reeds, you finally come to the banks of the river.

If you right click and 'open image in new tab' you will get the fully rendered image. Clicking the image expands it to full size.

I move just south of Etna and look at the mushrooms.

Rolls

Nature - (1d20+3)

(15) + 3 = 18

Merriweather
You move through the low shrubs and stoop to examine the growth of mushrooms next to Etna. They are the typical species as might be found growing in this environment, with a dark brown color and a smooth cap. Your experience tells you that they are edible, though they look a bit early to be harvested.

As the tracks pace closer to the water's edge, the ranger becomes increasingly wary of both collapsing banks and the possibility that their foe may be submerged. Once again, she takes a knee to try to reach out to monsters in their surroundings.
OOC:
Going for another primeval awareness. Extra survival check as well in case the tracks go alongside the water or something.

Rolls

Survival - (1d20+5)

(14) + 5 = 19

Advantage(?) - (1d20+5)

(13) + 5 = 18

"This place feels far too still for a swamp." Ilwyn notes, cautiously watching the trees for any sign of movement. "By the by, Hraefn - I don't suppose you could ask the resident alligators not to eat us? Maybe tell them we're here to solve their monster problem?"

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+1)

(7) + 1 = 8

OOC:
As a note, if you are moving, the map has coordinates that you can use as a guide.
Jan 11, 2019 7:31 am
"Should they approach us, I will tell them of our intentions. Perhaps they may even help us." Hraefn moved himself a bit further forward, just to join Etna in giving everyone a sense of the lay of the land.
OOC:
Shifting to square AR15, or thereabouts. Will do a Survival check to figure out how deep the swamp might be for the purposes of moving near or into it, whether there are safe spots for standing etc
Also declaring, because I'm necessarily one step behind everyone's rolls for ability checks, where opportune and the DM permits, Hraefn will cast Guidance so that the character can roll an additional d4.

Rolls

Survival (safe route into swamp) - (1d20+7)

(2) + 7 = 9

Guidance (on self) - (1d4)

(2) = 2

Ilwyn
The swamp makes you uneasy, the stillness of it a bit unnerving as you look around. Your eyes play tricks as you look back and forth from tree to water, to tree to brush, but you see nothing out of the ordinary.

Hraefn
While you are well versed in woodland lore, swamp lore is a bit more problematic to your eye. The ground looks sturdy enough, until you step on a patch and the reeds below give way to softer earth. You do note that the stream running through this area is not fully the river (which is just off of the map) and looks a bit shallow. Though murky, you can see the bottom is perhaps 3-4 feet down and is a solid sheet of muddy silt. Of note, however, is the lack of water creatures, other than some insects that skirt along its surface. You see no fish, etc.

Etna
Similar to your previous attempt, you determine that there are no dragons or monstrosities within range of your senses. However, you manage to discern that the tracks you are following head straight ahead toward the water. It looks almost as if the thing steps right over small trees and large bushes, reaffirming your notion that this thing is tall.
