As long as there are no trolls, I should be fine. I say, throwing my quiver over my shoulder.

Bram, Hrafn
Bram, as you hold the sundial coin, and Hraefn mentions magic, you suddenly think about how magical items work. While there is no real way to know when a magical device will expend the last of its energy, you imagine this tiny coin as a marker to the magic left in the device.

Holding it, you both get the sensation that you are holding something akin to a hand-crossbow, as the grip has a tiny bit of movement not unlike the trigger of the crossbow. Surmising, you think that were you to have a different coin, one where the thin line were not on the left, perhaps you might make it work.
OOC:
In lieu of Bram's excellent arcana check, along with Hraefn's help, I figured you could probably deduce as much about the two items.

Hmm, so, it's akin to charges in a magical item." Hraefn nodded at Bram's understanding of the device. "We may yet find other such coins which gives it more magical charge, as it were." The druid spoke his explanation out loud to the others as well. "Perhaps our archers could put this to good use, " and looked at both Merriweather and Etna.

It’s all hers. Crossbows are not my weapon of choice.

"Ne'er held a crossbow before in my life. I'll hold on to it though, see if we can find another of these little blue things later on." She chuckles under her breath, remembering a story Lod often told about crossbows. Devilish contraptions! No replacement for the fine skill of a proper bow, he would say. "I have to say, these monsters worry me. Not seen anything like them before, on paper or otherwise."

With the disc still in his hand Bram hands the device to Etna. "Let's all keep our eyes open for discs like this even if they are not exact duplicates some may have more charges or, if it does work like a crossbow, it could discharge a different kind of bolt."

The captain moves toward you, Bram, his eyes a bit wide in curiosity as you reveal the little hidden things about the device in your hand.

"It is a boon that that creature was unable to make this magic work. I fear what might have happened had it been able to. Your insights are most welcomed, sir mage. I am sure Colonel DeLarouge would welcome your counsel."

"This gives us a clue to understanding how their alien magic works. Completely antithetical to my understanding of the magic of life and nature." Hraefn attempted to adjust his mindset to try to comprehend these devices, and possibly future ones they might encounter.

Bram listens to the guard as he speaks of Colonel DeLarouge. If my team members are not in a big hurry to move on, I may be able to spend a moment or two with the Colonel." Bram turns to his partners. "How soon do we need to leave? Do I have time to speak to the Colonel for a couple minutes?"
Feb 26, 2019 6:39 am
"Nearly dusk. We can camp here, and set out first thing tomorrow morning."
Feb 26, 2019 2:58 pm
I nod at Hraefn, "Sounds like a good plan."

Bram turns to the guard and nods his assent to the request to speak to the Colonel.

With a nod, the captain turns and leads you all to the large tent at the end of camp. Stepping through the flaps, he announces your presence.

"Sir! These good folk come under charge from Duke Owen. They have just arrived and their abilities already bear fruit for our investigation. I felt it best they should speak to you directly."

Inside, the tent is spacious, with a separate area for sleeping that is closed off from the main. Here there is a desk in the corner, but the main space is dominated by a large table on which sits a large map of the area. Another, smaller table holding refreshments in the form of fruits and vegetables as well as decanters of wine and water. There is a single person inside, a man of below-average height and above-average head size. He is not fat, but is thick in the legs and shoulders that bear his rank and station on his epaulets. His half-plate armor is polished and clean, reflecting the flickering lantern light inside.

"So. Duke Owen sends reinforcements in the form of six men and women of various rank and station to fight a war with an enemy we have no inkling of, does he?" Colonel DeLarouge starts to say. Seeing you all gathered, he nods and sweeps a hand. "Please. Drink with me. I trust his Lordship's counsel, though I had hoped for more of a battalion of trained soldiers. I am hopeful that my captain is correct in his assessment of you."

"Now then. You know me. Who, then, are you?" he asks, pouring a glass of wine and offering the same to you all.

Cædwyn nods at the Colonel, "Lord Cædwyn Eigendrast. Thank you." I take the offered decanter, pour myself a glass, and pass the decanter along. "I think you mistake our purpose here though sir. We haven't come to fight a war, but to solve a problem. While you'd no doubt be able to hold the fort for a bit longer with more men, you'd soon be overwhelmed. These things, whatever they are, are multiplying. Their source needs to be found and destroyed, and that's a task best left to a few individuals who can move faster and more stealthily than a military unit of any size."

Cædwyn
"You lead your comrades to the cave then, Lord Eigendrast?" the colonel asks.
Feb 27, 2019 8:36 pm
I shake my head, "Nothing so formal. We're all each independent and fully capable on our own. Some of us are just drawn to speaking roles more naturally. The cave though is our destination."

"Three groups such as yours have traveled to that region, as did a group of ten of my men, led by my finest soldier. None have as yet returned. I shall pray for you and your families. Do you have kin who wish to be informed of your untimely end?" LaRouge asks, no hint of malice or ill will present in his voice or demeanor.

I grin, "Oh there are several who would be overjoyed should such a thing come to pass, though I wouldn't mind letting them wait to hear the news." Looking at my companions I ask, "I assume we all have our various affairs in order though yes?"
Feb 27, 2019 10:49 pm
"No beast's felled me yet! I intend to keep it that way."
