OOC:
I was actually referring to the sample he got from the fireplace, not the giant's hair. @DM
annex says:

...Ælfric used his arcane arm to retrieve some of the night's ashes and small pieces of wood from the fireplace in case that would be enough for Julian's teleportation, stored them carefully, then a whispered magic word and a quick sign took him down the chimney!...

Ælfric shrugged at Korgazhar's question, assumed the half-orc would be sour no matter what happened, and retrieved the hair and fireplace ash for Julian.

Vialing the contents if they aren't already, Julian labels them carefully with a bit of paper and small amount of adhesive derived from boiled animal bones and tendons. He holds out the labeled vial of giant hair belonging to the chief "You may have spooked our enemies Ælfric, but this will ensure that they will never escape my sight. Good work. We are now one step closer to victory." he pauses for a moment, still watching the giants through his arcane eye. "Perhaps we allow things to cool off for a time. We have no reason to rush. The giants will be alert this morning, and likely tonight as well."

OOC:
If the party is not going anywhere today, I'll need perception checks from those out standing watch. Alain? Feranl? Anyone else?

OOC:
I was actually thinking of taking the party to Greyhawk for a nice breakfast, then teleporting back before lunch. Staying in the cave is cool too though. XD

"Also trying for the she-giant's hair was my mistake, Dreamseer. I should have focused solely on the necessary items."

Alain whispers to Aelfric

"Welcome back. Anybody follow you?"

When he gets a negative head shake, Alain follows him into the cave and listens to the dissemination of information, before heading back out to keep watch.

Korgazhar grabbed Aelfric's arm as the elf shrugged past him. "I've killed men for lesser affronts than this." Then, releasing his grip, "Deliver on your task, and it shall be forgotten. Risk our lives with your carelessness, and we shall have words." With that he left Aelfric to update the rest with his findings.

"If we are staying here longer, then roster a watch. I can take the shift after Alain and Fernal are done," the half-orc declared matter-of-factly.
Jan 23, 2019 3:58 am
Ælfric occasionally looked back at Korgazhar with dispassion. Such angry, self-important people usually led themselves and those bound to them into ruin... and Ælfric would not allow the half-orc to have any control over his actions or emotions.

Watching the exchange between Korgazhar and Ælfric, Julian takes notice of their growing tension, but doesn't intervene. "We should spend the day and night here. Though I could bring us to some city to rest and relax, I could not also take your retainers. A proposition I'm sure you're unhappy with, Korgazhar."
Jan 23, 2019 4:35 am
Ælfric nodded.

"Can you keep watching the giants or will it strain you? We can plan based on their movements."

He unconsciously rubbed his throat while talking.

"Only for so long. I will check in on them periodically, and send a little bird to watch them more permanently." Julian extend his hand, allowing his large and loose sleeve to dangle in the slight breeze. Out from the sleeve flies Lenore, a black raven and Julian's familiar, who flies away towards the steading.
OOC:
I can't communicate with my familiar from more than 100ft away, but I'll order it to return to me and inform me if any giants leave their camp heading any direction other than directly away from us. Also, the sleeve is how I'm flavoring the "pocket" dimension. It HASN'T been there this whole time. XD

At Julian's comment, Korgazhar seemed to relax his hardened expression a little, a bit more self-aware of the effect of his harsh taskmaster approach to their entire expedition.

"I am... not averse to having a good time, celebrating when it is time for celebration. I dislike the dangers this location offers, and what I see as risky endeavours. Nonetheless I accept that our skills differ," and with a slight conciliatory nod to Aelfric, "and what I deem foolhardy may be your everyday stock-in-trade. I fully support strategies that make our task easier or more effective, and will try not to object too much to your preferred methods of achieving thus."

"I will stay up for watch and enjoy my dear rations again." Seems she is grumbling about the rations and not doing watch.

The day passes slowly, and keeping an eye out below proves beneficial. The giants, or at least King Nosnra, are on edge as you see several patrols exit and enter the steading throughout the day. They look to be scouring the nearby landscape for any sign of intruders, but they never manage to come up and around the hills where you are based.

As night falls, the patrols continue but to a lesser extent. The sky proves helpful as well, as clouds begin to roll in, covering what light the twin moons of Celene and Luna are providing.

Later that afternoon, Julian sends his arcane eye to see if he can map out the basement level of the steading. After nightfall, when he thinks the giants might be sleeping, he'll perform his first scrying on Nosnra, holding the vial of his hair to enhance the spells potency. He'll watch the giant for 10 minutes, see if he sleeps in the same bed or otherwise.

DC 17 wisdom save from Nosnra, with a -10 tacked on at the end. I've seen Nosnra more than once now, so I imagine that qualifies for the +0 category of "firsthand"?

OOC:
Sorry for my tardiness. Hopefully we can all now begin to get right to it. :D
Julian
The time passes slowly into the night, as you focus your energy on sifting out the secrets of the lower steading. As expected, there is a full lower set of chambers, long ago carved from stone and rock to create storage chambers, slave cells and other such locations. Interestingly, there is also a set of natural caverns where many of the orcs seem to have taken up residence. In addition, you find a worked stone tunnel that appears to have collapsed (or was collapsed).

In addition to the orcs, you spy a huge giant working the prisoner area, and during your investigation you watch him torturing an elf, tossing the remains into a small pile of broken bodies when he is done. Finally, in a caged chamber, you spy a huge beast with the body of a lion, large leathery wings and a spike tail. What is most unnerving is the head of the beast looks almost human. You have heard of the manticore before, but having never seen one personally, its description pales in comparison to the real thing.

The Hill Giant King stays up late, once again feasting with the stone giant guest before retiring to his sitting room for a while in private consultation with the visitor. After a period of time, he retires to his bed. While you do not know what is said between the two, the stone giant gives Nosnra a large piece of parchment, which he reads and then hands back to him.

Korgazhar's single-mindedness meant that he paid close attention at each description of the place that Julian uncovered and laid out for the rest of them. His expression was emotionless even as he immediately concluded that the giants took to housing the orcs in the caves beneath to use as slaves, and privately contemplated how to go beyond the surgical strike they had planned, to kill as many of the giants as they could. Time will tell once they were in.

Ælfric's brow furrowed at the mention of the tortured and murdered elf. He sharpened his rapier and daggers while listening to the clairvoyant's descriptions and viewing his drawing of the caverns of horror.
