Dorn's Deep

The quaggoths are determined to fight to the death, and every rake of claws is accompanied by enraged snarls (Al takes 17 slashing damage, Vince takes 32, after resistance Reo takes 27, and after resistance Ug takes 6).

Alalla's flaming sword cuts wide swathes through white fur, the fiery light illuminating Ug's bestial form as the goliath brings his own weapon home with devastating swings. Just behind the barbarian, Ras carefully extends a healing hand.

Then one of the slavers reveals itself more bluntly as an arcane lightning bolt bursts through the cloud of darkness and crackles down the corridor, careening wildly as it strikes walls, floor, and ceiling, a maelstrom of energy. It slams through both heroes and monsters, a merciless display of power.

In an incredible display of agility, Vincent flings himself down and almost seems to phase through the floor as the destructive magic passes over him (due to Evasion, Vince takes no damage). Ras shrinks aside just as a shocking tendril strikes him, and he manages to avoid some of its wrath (Ras takes 14 lightning damage).

Reòthadh takes the brunt of the blast as the spell slams into his chest (Reo takes 28 lightning damage). Still, the dwarf's impressive fortitude and iced armor keep him upright and stable. One of the quaggoths, in a last murderous attempt, rips a claw over the old dwarf's face. The claw, hand, arm, and shoulder of the creature flash-freeze, then crack and fall to the floor. The quaggoth soon follows.

Through the melee Vincent picks a target of his own. The warlock takes aim with his conjured bow, and fires. Two arrows flash down the corridor and pierce the bubble of darkness at the far end, resulting in a cry of pain - and Vincent feels the person's soul depart its body as it dies.

With the quaggoths and spellcasters defeated, the area is suddenly silent but for the gasps and groans of the heroes (hint that Erevain is bleeding out and has failed 1 death save) - until they notice that the darkness spell at the far end of the corridor has not dissipated.

The click of crossbows sound and tiny bolts fly out of the darkness. Two of them clatter against the ground near Ras, and two of them fly toward Vincent - who sidesteps the first and snatches the second from the air just an inch away from his eye. A flick of his wrist sends it back the same direction it came, and the warlock is rewarded by a grunt from the darkness (Vince deals 9 damage to whoever tried to shoot him).

Silence falls yet again, and the darkness remains.

Alalla goes to Erevain. "Great Torm," she murmurs, bending over her husband, "bring him away from death." Is this even how this works? "I can't do my duty without him." Way to make your new deity feel confident in you.

Al takes Erevain's hand and a small mote of light shines in their palms. She pulls him to a stand with a smile. It seems that was good enough.

Alalla uses Lay on Hands to give Erevain 1hp. 9/10 hp of that pool remaining.

The specter of the dead quaggoth disappears into the darkness. A few moments later it returns. It does not appear to have found anyone within the darkness.

It seems that whatever foes conjured the darkness have retreated further into the ruins of the dwarven citadel.

Erevain rises, holding a hand to his body bloody side. "They seem to have pulled back. Do we follow, or..." He groans. "With some time to see to our wounds, perhaps we could press on. But in this state..."
OOC:
Push on and chase the baddies who retreated, or camp out in the entry hall and take a short rest?

"To continue is to die," Alalla says. She supports Erevain with one arm and leans on her glaive with the other. "We are woefully unprepared. We need to rest and regroup, at least."

Looking around at all of the bodies, Vincent agrees.

Sitting down and making a rough sandwich with whatever was in his pack. An odd mix of nut butter, pickles, and cheese, Vincent munches on his snack while telling everyone a story about his past.

"Did I ever tell you about the time I courted the Pyromancer? Mmmmmmmm. Best cook I ever dated. Her favorite part of every day was waking up and setting fire to an oven the size of a bedroom. She was a Fire Genasi of course. She'd walk right into the oven not a care in the world, arms full of unbaked goodies, and come out with trays of something else. She did that day in and out.

So, one day they were repairing a crack in the oven, and we got a rare full day to ourselves. So we went out for a picnic at the beach. We we're halfway through the meal when we saw pirates attack a merchant vessel...

Have you ever seen what a Pyromancer can do to a ship? It's hardly a fair fight. Well, they must have already taken some spoils, because at the first lick of flames all the pirates jumped overboard and swam for their lives. Not picking up on their odd behavior, she just kept doing what she does best.

The explosion that quickly followed was, to this day, the biggest I have ever seen. I happened to blink at the right time. I missed the first flash of light and saw, for a split second my date hovering naked in midair. Both ships were vaporized along with a sizable bowl of water all around her. I swear I could see the sea floor before the waters rushed in and filled in the bowl.

And that, my friends, is why I was banned from Waterdeep. Turns out City Guards didn't believe me and my girlfriend found that time to conviently forget who I was despite wearing every stitch of my clothing.

On an related note my Armor of Shadows didn't cover me as well as I had hoped."

"Those were some impressive tricks, Reòthadh," Alalla says, tying off a bandage around Erevain's arm. "The fact that you've wrestled a dragon makes much more sense. Any other skills we have yet to see?"

OOC:
Short rest achieved!
The party takes some time to bind wounds and gather strength. Who knows what trials might lie ahead of them? Given the resistance they've met so far, storming Dorn's Deep is going to be difficult.

Erevain keeps his eyes on the corridor before them, the expression on his face showing that his mind is hard at work. "Duergar or drow? Either slaver race is evil and perfectly capable of siding with a creature such as Belhifet. It would make sense for gray dwarves to be drawn by the thought of taking control of an ancient dwarven city. But the way our foes fight..." He looks at a nearby pile of white-furred corpses. "Such awful cruelty, and they never reveal themselves..."

He nods. "I am sure it is dark elves we are up against."
Feb 6, 2019 2:47 am
"Well of course it's dark elves!" A drow soldier speaks up from only a dozen feet away. Where did he come from?

He raises his hands, palms open. "Take it easy! I'm just here on behalf of a mutual friend to share with you some news. And a warning. Please don't kill me, I - "

The drow blinks as his eyes fall on Reòthadh. "By Lady Lolth's Bloated Arse! Where in the Abyss did he come from?" He swallows. "I mean, he looks so old, he really shouldn't be out adventuring..."
Feb 6, 2019 2:53 am
Alalla leans on her glaive and raises an eyebrow. Her posture is easy, but she is ready to strike. "Is that you, Nym? You don't look as nice as before, but your manner is harder to mask than your face."
Feb 6, 2019 3:05 am
The drow stammers. "What? Who is this incredibly handsome rogue you speak of? I'm sure I have no idea to whom you refer..."

He sighs.

"Fine."
Feb 6, 2019 3:07 am
A moment later the merchant Nym appears as himself. "You caught me! But this disguise was only so that you wouldn't try to kill me. And also to fool that pompous idiot Malavon. Dangerous archmage in the next room, wants to kill you all, has a plan to do so." He arches a fine white eyebrow. "I told you I had news and a warning."
