Zangua yawns, but is otherwise silent as he breaks down camp after breakfast.

Onward!

After about an hour's ride, just past a sparse forest of leafless oak trees, come the first unmistakable signs of the orcs. As you ascend a low hill, you hear the stuttering groan of an orcish war-horn somewhere off to the northwest. Coming back down the other side of that hill, Leth spots one standing atop a ridge to the east, a wolf at his side. He vanishes soon after he's spotted; there can be no doubt that he has seen the party.

Soon you can see Old Hilltown in the distance, its central plateau and surrounding hills bearing the shells and bones of ruined structures. Beyond are the gray slopes of the Lesser Dulehans, and somewhere between is the Valley of the Dragon.

You are about three miles from Old Hilltown. Will you keep going, or are there any other actions you want to take?

I'm inclined to keep moving and stay ahead of the orcs.
Mar 19, 2019 6:20 pm
"We'd better hustle," says Zangua. "I'll hang back a bit in case those wolves come up from behind, but if they're any good at mobility they'll try to head us off and delay us for their foot soldiers." He draws his sword and prepares his shield.

"I agree." Leth chimes in. "The sooner we get to our destination, the better." Leth keeps his bow drawn, and makes every effort to keep a close eye on their surroundings as they go, looking for any signs of orcs around or behind them, not wanting to fall into a trap or ambush.

"Let's ride," Domarc says, as he urges his horse forward.
Mar 21, 2019 5:36 pm
After another mile of progress you can hear the war cries -- harsh, barking yells coming from over the hills to the west. Leth is the first to see them, approaching in plain view from several hundred yards away: sixteen orcs with seven leashed wolves. They let out another cry as their entire party surmounts the rise and starts to descend toward you.

16 orcs and 7 wolves are approaching. You have time to take preparatory actions or make ranged attacks.

Looks for missile weapons on the orcs.

Zangua maneuvers to interpose himself between the party and the charging orc-and-wolf horde. Shield made ready, he clutches his longsword behind him to swipe at the first opponent to cross his path.
Mar 22, 2019 4:50 pm
Annganne can see one orc holding a sling and warming up his throwing arm.

You all can take one action before the enemies are in missile range, then you can take another action or fire ranged weapons, and then you'll roll for initiative.
Mar 22, 2019 5:03 pm
"Take cover!" says Zangua. He raises his shield and prepares to dodge any attacks before he meets the charge.
OOC:
Taking the Dodge action.

No action at this point, but as the orcs enter missile range, Domarc will cast Hypnotic Pattern - range 120 feet - to get as many orcs as possible inside the 30 foot cube of effect
Mar 22, 2019 6:19 pm
OOC:
Ha, beat me to it! I will save my illusion of a sudden inferno before us for another time.
*Annganne Anne will cast Sleep at those, if any, who make it through the Hypnotic Pattern.*

Hit points of creatures affected by Sleep - (5d8)

Leth curses as the orcs come in to view. He drops back a few feet behind the rest of his party as he pulls an arrow back on his bow, aiming at the closest orc, releasing it as soon as it's within range.

As they close to within arrow range, the orcs loose the wolves from their leashes; the wolves immediately begin to charge toward you while the orcs start loading their slings.

Please make any ranged attacks you would like (Leth, got yours already) and roll for initiative.

Annganne, the wolves will be in range first, do you want to cast Sleep on them or wait for the orcs?

She puts her finger on her chin and remembers reading Farleth Mowathly's Never Crye Wolfe, then decides to focus on the wolves, who normally sleep every hour anyway and would probably appreciate an excuse to nap.
