As the wolves close in, Annganne steps forward and casts forth a subtle illusion of peaceful twilight, of full wolf bellies and the warmth of the pack huddled together at rest.

Two wolves sink back onto their haunches and settle down to sleep. The rest keep coming at you.

At the orcs who follow the wolves -- tall, lean, and gray-skinned, with long hair running down their backs and the sides of their faces, clad in hide-and-carapace armor -- Leth takes careful aim, firing off two precision shots at the orc leading the charge. The first arrow pierces his shoulder, the second his heart. He falls mid-stride; the other orcs rush past him without a glance.

They run into a field of swirling, interlaced colors conjured by Domarc. Here, nine of them stop in their tracks. The rest keep running, but two near the rear cry out and stop. An orc near the front gives a shout. At about 100' short of you, the four in the lead stop and start to charge up their slings, while the two at the rear venture back to the fading field of hypnotic color patterns to attend their comrades, some of whom are staggering in a daze while others pray loudly to Gruumsh.

Enemy status: 5 awake wolves, 2 sleeping wolves, 1 dead orc, 6 awake orcs, 9 hypnotized orcs.

Rolls

Wolves & orcs initiative - (1d20+2, 1d20+1)

Orcs WIS saving throw - (16d20)

Apr 3, 2019 5:44 pm
Annganne, you win initiative and can take one action before the wolves enter melee range. After that the order will be wolves, orcs, party.

Everybody: please check out the new combat map for your visual reference needs!
Apr 3, 2019 6:27 pm
Well done, spellslingers.

ETA: Looking at the map, PBO, is there any undergrowth/rubble/low-lying fog that Mordred might conceal himself in the area?

"It is time to gauge their interest in birds!"

Casts a Major Image of a Roc flying straight down from a cloud, with an orc in beak that it swallows as it pulls up. Then, it flies at them. If it gets close, it will "nearly miss", then pull up for another divebomb.

I think the spell save DC might be 15? (Proficiency bonus 3, INT bonus 2)

The remaining wolfpack leaps at the two of you out in front. Three wolves pounce at Zangua while two try to take down Felor.

Felor knocks the first one aside, but the second clamps down hard on his arm. One wolf goes low at Zangua and sinks his fangs into Zangua's thigh while the other two find themselves deflected by his armor.

That's 6 damage to Zangua, 9 to Felor, and both of you need to give me Strength saving throws.

Two orcs use their actions to shake their hypnotized comrades out of their torpor.

As the wolves attack, Annganne stands up on her mount's back and enters a state of deep concentration. A shadow passes overhead, and suddenly a massive bird with a twenty-foot wingspan emerges from the clouds, gobbling down the flailing, bloody limbs of an orc as it descends. Some of the orcs break their position and scatter as it plunges down, pulling up at the last second to circle back around for another dive. One orc gives a shout, and all four slingers loose their bullets at the avian nightmare.

Edit: Two of the sling bullets pass right through the roc. One of the orcs points and yells something. Two of them drop their slings and draw their blades while the other two start loading their slings again.

Everybody but Annganne can take an action now!

Mordred slides around Leth and attempts to flank one of the wolves. He swipes his dagger at it, and then rolls into some underbrush at the side of the trail.

Mordred gets alongside one of the wolves circling around Zangua and drives his dagger up into its belly. With a single swift and dexterous motion, he gives the dagger a fatal twist, pulls it out, and rolls away toward some scrub at the side of the trail.

(Nota bene, Mordred: there is not enough brush here to actually hide you.)

Domarc, Felor, Leth, and Zangua, you can take your actions now.
Apr 5, 2019 7:13 pm
Zangua swats aside some of the jaws and tries to kick free of the wolf that has his leg.

He retaliates by swinging his longsword, hacking away at the beasts.

With a wolf right up next to him, and hearing Felor's prayer, Domarc will take the disengage action and move 5 feet back.

As a bonus action, he will give bardic inspiration on Zangua: "why do they yelp at each other?/this is what it sounds like/when wolves cry" Zangua has a d8 to add on to any ability check, attack roll, or saving throw in the next 10 minutes.

Both Zangua and Felor hold their ground and remain upright when the wolves try to take them down. Zangua hacks at the neck of the wolf on his leg; two quick blows kill the wolf and it drops to the ground.

Felor calls upon Fjorgyn while Domarc backs up, singing a fragment of a song.

Edit: One wolf leaps back and turns to run back toward the orcs, snarling and barking. The other two do not react.

Leth, you're up!
