Chapter IIa: Absolute Disaster

Kendall heads to her newly-assigned room, changes into her new uniform, hating how restrictive it is. I forgot how much I loved the non-regulation parts of my job before.

She thinks, and realizes also how much she loved the freedom of non-Spacefleet life. But, these are her people now. She will make due with this, and hopefully, they can help her tie off the loose ends of her life.

She makes a few modifications to the uniform to allow for a little more flexibility. Hopefully no one notices, she muses as she puts on her coat. It's not regulation, but it allows for her to conceal her two acquired phasers and her "pen" inconspicuously in case she needs them.

Once she looks herself over in the mirror and is happy with the result, she hits her comm badge and says, "Computer: locate Commander Cassano."

Wherever the computer indicates, she will take a turbolift to that location.

Moonbeam says:
Cass thanks the lieutenant and disconnects, frowning as she continues walking. If the parasite was asking to speak to "Captain Tulak," she wonders why Marbo hadn't simply patched him through to her.

Sighing, she guesses she'll have to do it after all. "Cassano to Dr. Zlam. Marbo, I hate to make you go over this again, but in the airlock, when the parasite grabbed your arm, what was he saying to you before you gave the order to blow the airlock?"
"Commander. Zlam. Parasite wanted to speak to Tulak. Marbo assumed he meant you. Demeanor was very threatening. Marbo made a quick assessment. Based on past interactions, and nature of the request, marbo denied request. Conversation changed to thinly veiled threats. Marbo does not deal in thinly veiled threats, and took us out for a walk. Always good to go outside. Fresh air. Good for calming down," Marbo says, recounting to the best of his ability the lead-up to his near death experience. He tries to remember all of the scenario, but he can only vaguely remember his helmet shattering, the door opening, the vacuum sucking him and the slug into space, and then blackness.

" I am sorry, commander. Marbo remembers not much of the incident, other than choosing to protect his home and his family."

Cass frowns a little, but she already feels badly about making Marbo relive the attack even this much. "Okay, Marbo, that's all I wanted to know. I'm sorry for asking you to remember it. Take it easy and concentrate on recovering."

OOC:
Cass, are you in the ready room?

" Anytime, Commander."

Sure, why not?

Kendall, you enter the bridge, which, I guess, would be held by Darcy at this moment. She barely acknoledges you as you make your way to the ready room and signal your presence at the door.
Cass, someone's at the door to your ready room.

"Belka. Get one of the interns to examine the age of the entry wound on the woman in stasis. Follow with an examination of how long the brainstem has been disconnected. Also, more Tea," Marbo states. Still assuming command from his bed.

He shoots a glance at Belka when he turns to look at Marbo, and smirks the kind of smirk that a smartassed child would shoot at a parent or teacher when they know theyre holding the cards.

"Also, Marbo requires assistance in the restroom"
Mar 25, 2019 7:17 pm
"Yes, Dr. Marbo. Someone is already working on doing this analysis. You've told us about this multiple times.", Belka replies. "And someone will get you another tea."
When he gives his final addition, Belka gives him a disbelieving stare. "You can do that by yourself, Doctor. The collar shouldnt stop you there and I'm sure you've done it before."
Unlike Marbo, Belka seems not amused.

Kendall walks in, uniform worn. "Commander, since we will be working together for a while, I wanted to put my cards on table to you. I do need assurances that this will not show up on any reports to Spacefleet, though, as I fear our friend Karen would seek opportunity to destroy me.

"Do I have your word?"

"Doctor Zlam had no problems. Marbo is injured, and feeble. To feeble to stare at screens and run analysis, much too weak to take care of his cleanups.

Are you denying care to a patient? Perhaps if Marbo was no longer a patient, he would be determined fit for duty, and wiping himself."

Marbo looks absolutely tickeled by the solution hes come up with, and the feeling of juvenile bliss breaks through with a huge grin, two of his hands crossed across his chest, the remaining two pantomiming how hard it is for him to reach his posterior.

"Do you mean that no references to Kendall F'brei show up on the reports, or something else that you're about to share with me? Because if you're asking me to ensure that your name doesn't appear on any reports, I obviously can't agree to that. But if this is about that matter we were discussing much earlier... then yes, I give you my word that it will remain between us."

"If you're not even able to wipe yourself, I definitely won't be able to declare you fit for duty.", Belka replies, turning your comment around on you. "Listen, we both know you're just trying to annoy me until I kick you out of sickbay. It's not going to work. Just be quiet on your bed for an hour and I'll let you get back to active duty. If you annoy me, I'll stick you in one of the recovery tubes and turn off all communications with it."

OOC:
Honestly, Cass would probably find some justice in this solution.

"Marbo will be filing a report to command on your refusal to provide medical services at the request of a patient, but he will shut up for now."

Kendall speaks up: "The fact that you don't see a 'Kendall F'brei' on Spacefleet records is because there never has been one in Spacefleet. As you know, I bear a...striking resemblance...to one Karen Granden.

"You probably found at some point where Karen volunteered to lead a team planetside to save a Space fleet crew who encountered mysterious turbulence (explained as encountering dark matter), which caused the ship to crash onto a moon of a gas giant (the moon being a class-M moon, but still somewhat harsh living conditions).

"They beamed down and found the source of the signal, but there was no shipwreck in sight. Instead, some changelings (posing as Spacefleet in distress) attacked her team, killing one of them in the process. She and her crew fought them off. The changelings had some sort of transporter disruptor machine, which prevented the matter-to-energy conversion to take place. After several hours of stratagem, they found the source of the disruptor and attempted to disable the device, and then they transported off that rock, registering the distress beacon as faulty.

"What the report doesn't mention is that as we tried to beam out of there, we realized that we didn't disable the device appropriately, the transporter caused excruciating pain, and when it was done, we were all stuck on this planet still.

"We called back to the ship, but they left us on the planetoid. My remaining team members died in the onslaught we engineered, but I took one of the enemy pod ships, destroyed the others, and left the location.

"It was in using that technology that I discovered what had occurred: the disruptor caused the signal of the transporter to duplicate the message, effectively causing a 'fax' of myself to land on the ship. I also discovered that the changelings intended this to occur, but I am unsure why. An experiment, maybe?

"It has been 10 years since the incident. I took on another personae, as I discovered that "Karen-2" was promoted, moving up the ranks, and she is now a Space fleet captain. I watched her from a distance, and discovered in my investigation that she is not me, really. Her in-depth motivations are evil in nature.

"I decided that I can never be Karen Granden anymore. The last 10 years have really sent us on divergent paths. I don't know what she is up to, or what she is doing, but she's not good. Something is off.

"If she, or Space fleet, were to find out the truth of what occurred, I would be hunted actively by Space fleet spec ops. Karen is too valuable to them. That's why I need to be inconspicuous, understand?"

Marbo has taken to sitting on the end of the medical cot, drumming on it and his thighs and his collar with all four of his hands.

He can not keep a beat to save his life.

Cass listens to all of this with outward impassivity. Inwardly, her first thought is, It's not an evil twin - it's an evil clone! That's EVEN BETTER!

But this is, of course, a fleeting and immature thought that she casts aside instantly, being a serious acting captain about to embark on a major, complex mission of great importance.

The ramifications of Kendall's story about her changeling imposter are disturbing, but when she gets to her assertion that Spacefleet special operations would "hunt her down" if Kendall were to make herself known to them, Cass is more than a little skeptical. It doesn't square with anything she knows or has experienced or even heard about regarding Spacefleet. And honestly, it couldn't possibly matter less in this moment. They have a job to do that is entirely unrelated to Kendall's imposter situation.

"I appreciate you telling me this," Cass says, "but to be honest, I don't have time to unpack this or give it any real thought right now. If we both survive this next mission, we can talk about it then."

"Belka. How are the tests coming," MArbo asks, stopping his incessant drumming in search of answers. Belka has had more than enough time to calculate the time between the wound and the disconnection of the brain stem.
