With that Fernal pushes herself off the wall and opens the door. She continues her quiet stealthy walking. She walks to the next door and listens.

Moving quietly to the intersection, Fernal pauses at the first door to listen. At the rear, Legeia carefully passes into the hallway, Aelfric closing it behind you before moving back to his place in the line. At the door, there is nothing of note, and this wing of the giant stronghold appears to muffle the sounds coming from the feast hall. Similarly, no sound emanates from the other two doors.

The hallway leading north is intermittently lighted by flickering torches, their smoky fumes providing a heady oil and ash smell. At the far end of the hallway you can see it ends in a door. Though that end is dark and shadowy, you can make out moving shadows beneath the cracks.

Julian points to the door at the end of the far hall. "That door leads to the kitchen. From there, we can access tunnels beneath the steading."

Julian wills his arcane eye towards the door, sending it into the kitchen to scout the area.

Fernal moves forward to the door at end of the far hall and listens.

Julian
Smoke fills an odorous kitchen, which features two large trestle tables covered with pots, kettles and bowls. Counters along the walls are likewise cluttered with wooden utensils, jugs, mugs, and plates. Barrels are piled near the tables, and various cheeses, smoked meats, and sausages hang from the blackened rafters. Simmering in the hearths are two fat iron cauldrons overflowing with hot broth. In front of the hearths and tables are a group of giant maids wearing stained leather aprons, screaming instructions at a host of orcs and their young ogre taskmasters, who scurry in and out of a pair of large double doors to the east.

Fernal
From the other side of the door, you can hear grunts, squeals and the bellows of giants. The clanging of pots and sounds of metal-on-metal, as if someone were stirring a massive soup pot, can be heard. The occasional groan and creak of doors opening and closing can be heard as well.

Sure right way? I hear giants more. Fernal seems a bit unsure that they going the right way.

Korgazhar scowled at Julian and Fernal's description of the kitchen. "I didn't come here to kill maids and orcs. But I have no qualms doing so. Either that, or we backtrack and go round to the adjacent corridor. Or if you have your charm powers, now it's time to use them." The half-orc looked at the mage and the bard.

"I fear there are far to many for us to charm, and with our proximity to the feast hall the sound of combat would draw unwanted attention to us."

"Very well. Back round." Korgazhar made ready to move back the same way they came.

"The other hall would be best. This passage here would lead us closest to our goal." Julian gestures to a point on the map. "Perhaps we can sneak past them here, if we time it correctly. I can transform Ligeia and myself into something more subtle, that we might not have a horse sneaking through the kitchens."

Julian wills his arcane eye into the gap between the feast hall and the kitchen, intending to move it between the two that he might watch for those who might accidentally discover his allies.

Quickly regrouping and heading back, you return to the eastern hall that runs north. Up front, Fernal can see where the corridor widens, and a set of massive doors lead into the feast hall on one side, and the kitchen on the other. Just as you get about halfway down, Julian calls a quick halt to the party. The door to the feast hall opens and the hallway is flooded by the now-unblocked shouts and laughs of a host of giants. A pair of orcs, puny compared to the giants and ogres populating the steading, carry empty trays back toward the kitchen. Though you are in the relative open, neither appears to notice you and they pass to the west, through the kitchen doors.

Fernal holds her breath and lets them pass before proceeding.

Seeing Fernal pause successfully, Korgazhar kept still as well. Those doors were likely to have high traffic to and from the kitchen. They'd just have to sneak past it. Or if necessary, kill anyone who appears when they were nearer. He continued moving only after the orcs exited, and after Fernal.

Moving quickly and quietly down the hall, you all manage to get past the doors without being noticed; something incredible given that you have a Pegasus traveling behind you. Reaching the smaller door leading into the back end of the kitchen, you all move to take up positions surrounding Fernal.

As you arrive, Korgazhar notes that the corridor you are in continues for perhaps 70-80' before ending in a large door. No sooner than you get set to open the kitchen door, than the hallway door opens and a grotesquely fat hill giant appears. Behind him is a large room, and you see a pair of females inside. The male giant, however, has apparently not seen you, as the females call out and he turns to see what they want.

Fernal steps back from the hallway to avoid being seen and motion all to get against the wall as she does. And she listen to either hear the door close or some giant walking down the hall to her position.

Ælfric followed Fernal's lead and moved to put himself out of the line of sight of the blubberous giant.

"How much does it take to feed him?" Ælfric wondered.
Apr 13, 2019 4:25 am
Korgazhar moved likewise. Hopefully they could get through their door quickly without being spotted. It'll still be tricky, seeing that there are still orcs and ogres in the kitchen. Maybe the more magical among them could conjure up an illusion.

"Move in fast. Make illusion to hide us?" Korgazhar whispered.

@DM. I have an idea, but it relies on their being a stack of dishes or other glassware available around the indicated position. Would that be the case in this kitchen or no?

Fernal turns to Korgazhar a moment with her fingers to her lips indicating "Be quiet" and turns her attention back to listening for what to do next. She had a concerned look on her face. Like perhaps she doesn't want something bring this whole place on us for not real reason.
