Hi! I've never done a formal RPG through play-by-forum, but am very interested in trying...

Is there anyone out there who's looking to set up a 5e game? I'd be open to playing or even DMing, if nobody else wants to. Let me know if you're up for it, and we'll get something going.
Nov 7, 2014 5:43 pm
I'd get in on a 5E game. Total newbie though, if that works for ya...
Nov 7, 2014 11:04 pm
I haven't played a 5e game yet myself, but I've been through the free rules online (to get it built for Gamers' Plane), so if you want a player, I'd be in. But I suspect if you do start a game, we could get more interested people from Twitter onboard.
Nov 7, 2014 11:19 pm
I'll create a few characters based on the ones my IRL group were running and put them in the library.

So as I work on these characters, it becomes apparent that the most annoying part of making a 5e character on here is going to be manually adding in the skills. Would it be possible to have all the skills that appear on the basic character sheet appear automatically?
Nov 8, 2014 12:32 am
I actually asked about that on Twitter as I was building the site; the general response was it was unnecessary. But I think I can make it auto-populate the skills with the ones on the character sheet.
Nov 8, 2014 12:37 am
It probably wouldn't be so detrimental that it would turn someone off of the site, but it's very tedious, especially if you're planning on uploading several characters to the library
Nov 8, 2014 8:33 am
most of the skills or feats autofill however. would that be useful to you even if -all- the skills aren't present?
Nov 8, 2014 10:44 pm
Some autofill is better than none!

*slowly raises hand*
I'd really like to try playing a 5e game...
Feb 17, 2015 12:47 pm
I got the books and looked them over. Loving what I see and am considering running a rpg noob series but not sure I will have the time since I have a lot going on. My airship pirates game doesnt seem to be happening so I may cancel that and do Dnd 5 instead. Keep an ear out for news on the matter.
Feb 17, 2015 8:52 pm
I would certainly jump into another 5E game if one came open.
Feb 18, 2015 2:14 am
I'm running a 5E game with my local game group, but it would be nice to play one on here!
Feb 19, 2015 12:26 am
5e is of interest to me as well, but I don't have the materials to run it. I only have limited access to a Player's Guide.
Mar 20, 2015 6:55 pm
Anything picking up steam with this game? I'm GM for one game but would love to play in one.
Apr 3, 2015 4:27 am
I'm interested but look like this kind of died?
May 12, 2015 2:32 am
Yes, barinthus. It looks to have died. Anyone else in the thread interested in starting up another game?
May 14, 2015 1:09 pm
I'd like a game, but I don't know if I have enough time to devote to DMing...
May 14, 2015 2:45 pm
DMing here is quite easy... Since you have lots of time between posts you just need a nice notebook to not forget anything. Maybe start with a prewritten module that reduces the amount of preparation to a little reading. And you can go from there. Use the module as a starting point and wing the rest :-) Use your commute to come up with te next clever twist, usually you have a week or so to do it :-)
May 14, 2015 3:03 pm
I would also be interested! As long as y'all are cool with a novice to play-by-post
May 14, 2015 4:15 pm
I'm really tempted to start up a 5e game for you folks** -- I'd need to restrict it to the free basic rules (which are enough to carry us on for a little while) and I'd probably run a very basic home-brew adventure to start (just to feel out the mechanics and feel out how to best run 5e in this format). I'd take up to 5 players, so lets so how this will stick.

Sounds like Morrowlife and Caedron are definitely in.

**this is probably the third time I've written this post (but obviously I didn't post the others).
May 14, 2015 5:44 pm
I've only been doing PbP for under a year now and found using published adventures makes it pretty straightforward. You don't need any more time than you would for playing.
May 14, 2015 6:03 pm
Exactly :) So does that mean you're in?
May 14, 2015 6:08 pm
I'd actually REALLY like to run one of the longer adventures that WotC has published (Princes of the Apocalypse or Hoard of the Dragon Queen into Rise of Tiamat) but those are lv 1 - 15 adventures, and the pace of play by forum can often be much slower than even monthly face-to-face games.
May 14, 2015 9:34 pm
I'd play!
May 14, 2015 11:07 pm
I'd like to play, but to be honest I have the PHB and would want to use some of the classes and rules in that. I could probably get by without it... but I mean c'mooooon! :)
May 14, 2015 11:18 pm
Alright you twisted my arm. PHB is allowed
May 14, 2015 11:25 pm
Woot spoot magoot! Four classes just don't seem like enough to me anyway.
May 15, 2015 12:56 am
Yay for PHB! Now the question is do I try something new or go with a typical class
May 15, 2015 1:49 pm
Alright so this is officially on then. You can use anything in the PHB to create your characters. I'll start a game up in a few days, but in the meantime work on those characters and discuss them here.

Also, as you create your characters I want you to have a close connection with one other character (close connections are things like: personal friend, long time rival, traveling companion -- you know each other well) and a distant connection with a different character (distant connections are things like: once shared drinks at a bar, saved each other from a bandit ambush, lost a bunch of gold in a game of cards to them -- you have met before).
May 15, 2015 2:32 pm
Very nice. Where should we submit our characters?
May 15, 2015 2:39 pm
I will make the game shortly and let you know here when i do
May 15, 2015 2:48 pm
Do you have a preferred method of character creation?
And are we in Forgotten Realms?
May 15, 2015 2:58 pm
Standard array
and that's undecided but probably yes

What sort of classes do people want to play in this?

I understand that I'm late to this discussion so if you have enough who expressed interest earlier I won't be butt hurt if I'm not accepted.
May 15, 2015 5:32 pm
I'm in two D&D5E games already, and as much as I'd like to add a third, I'll give others a crack to go before me. If there's still a slot open come Monday I'll go ahead and sign up.

New to GP, but I'm definitely down for a 5e game. I tend toward sneaky or brutish-type PCs, but i'm up for anything.
May 15, 2015 8:26 pm
Cool. Just so everyone applying knows, I'm holding off on accepting until those who had first expressed interest submit applications. If by Monday they haven't I'll let the rest in on a first come-first-serve basis.
May 16, 2015 2:08 am
I applied! Excited to play some 5e :)
May 16, 2015 1:03 pm
Alright, we're all full up! To those who didn't get in, I apologize.

There is enough unfulfilled interested to easily support another game, if someone was interested in running it.
May 16, 2015 7:35 pm
Anyone know what they're playing yet?
May 16, 2015 8:17 pm
I made a thread in the game forum for you guys to discuss character concepts, introduce yourselves etc. I'd prefer if as much game-related discussion happened there as possible :)
Jun 30, 2015 11:44 am
One of our players seems to have vanished! The adventure I'm running really does call for a full team of 5, and so I'm opening this up to another player. Priority going to any of those who expressed interest back in May when I got this thing started.

I've opened up a slot: http://gamersplane.com/games/50
Jun 30, 2015 8:11 pm
I'd like to give it a shot if the previous people who expressed interest are not in, but FYI I haven't played D&D in a few years (probably since 3.5) so there may be a slight learning curve. I've done lots of pbp and pbf however and am usually very active.
Jul 1, 2015 4:16 pm
Ok cool, I see the application but I'm going to wait a day or two just to make sure the previously interested parties have a chance to see this.
Jul 4, 2015 8:27 pm
alright I've approved you. we're not quite ready to get you in the game but b you can make a character in the meantime. wotc has a free quick start rules for 5th edition
Jul 5, 2015 3:57 pm
Thanks! What does the party need?
Jul 5, 2015 8:10 pm
whatever you want to play. i adapt adventurers to the party.
Jul 6, 2015 1:17 pm
Hmm it says that I can't submit any more characters to the game for some reason?
Jul 6, 2015 1:43 pm
You have a valid character to add, don't have any submitted, but it says you can't submit any more characters? I'll look into that.
Jul 6, 2015 2:57 pm
Try now - somehow the "number of characters per player" got set to 0 when i edited the game to make room for you in the first place!
Jul 6, 2015 3:38 pm
Got it! Thanks!

I think what happened is that when I hit "edit" that field didn't auto-fill with the previous value (of 1) and I didn't bother putting anything in the field (because I was only changing player #) and so when I hit submit it automatically entered "0" for the blank. That's my guess anyway.

Veteran gamer here, likewise looking to get into a 5E game. Hit me up!
Aug 21, 2015 1:37 pm
Very convenient that you just dropped in. We may have another vacancy, and I was just scouting around for a potential replacement.

The group is level 2, and we're a very active game (posting about once a day except on weekends). I'd like to keep moving at this pace, so if that works for you I'll add a slot to the game and you can drop on in.

Sounds good, thanks! Totally interested! Any particular class/race needed? I can adapt to anything. Might take me a day or so to come up with the sheet and background though.

Once a day is beautiful! Especially the "except weekends" part. Family and kids and all. I'm super-available Mon-Fri from 8-4pm PST.

Great. I sent you an invite. If my AWOL player turns up again, we'll just carry on with a party of six.

Race no, the character you will be stepping in for is a fight, and the party is woefully short on tough melee types so something in the fighter/barbarian/wild shape druid/close combat ranger domain would be ideal. That said, I'm not a fan of forcing players to fill archetypes, when needed I adjust campaigns to suit the party (instead of expecting the party to be diverse). There is already a wizard, warlock, paladin and rogue so I would recommend avoiding those classes.

Sounds good! I'll work up the character and submit it.

I don't see any invites in my Inbox. Not sure how they work. Is it here? To my email? etc?

ETA: Just popped up in my e-mail. Thanks!

Right now, invites show up via email and on the home page. Still working on that feature...

There has been a lot of interest in 5e games lately, I noticed a few people getting stuck on standby. Well, I might have another drop out (or, at least, a player that's faded away temporarily - that's always the hope). It's part of the life of a PbF game.

Anyway, I'm looking for a 6th player to possibly fill the gap if one opens up, and if my absentee player reappears then we'll just carry on as a game of 6 (and I'll be able to be a bit more lenient about the ebb and flow of player activity, as with 6p it would be fine if one person vanished for a couple weeks and their character was just assumed to 'follow along'; like what you do in a face to face game and someone misses a session).

The group is level 2, and we're playing The Red Hand of Doom (so if you played it back in 3.5, or read the book, probably not a good game to jump into. Half the fun is in the mystery of the adventure!). The game is pretty active, with most players posting at least once a day (often more) and hardly anyone posting on weekends. I like to keep up that pace, as it keeps everyone in the game. If you are interested post here and I'll open the game up and send and invite to you (first post, first invite!).
Sep 23, 2015 6:03 pm
I'm interested. I'll have to create a character as soon as the bug is addressed (already submitted a report).
