At that moment, Tony saw a man in a black coat and black umbrella step out of the alley across the street. He was looking right at her.

And just to be sure it is safe, Andrea doesn't come get Tony until the next morning, so she has to sleep on the street.

"No," Tony said. She was shivering. The warm motel room felt nice. "Why didn't you come get me? I was scared."

"You know why," Andrea said. She reached out to touch Tony's shoulder. Tony was soaking wet and reeked of garbage.

Tony sniffled a little and nodded. Andrea was scared. Tony knew that. She could feel it. It was the one clear signal that was making it through the insane amount of noise screaming in her brain. Andrea lived her life in fear. Tony knew that she couldn't count on her when things got bad. Those were scary thoughts for an eleven-year-old.

"I just wish . . ."

Tony reached up and touched Andrea's hand on her shoulder and instantly the screaming in her brain began to quiet. She left her hand there and didn't speak.
