Scene: Argus Inquiries, Foyer

It's barely mid-morning, but the heat is stifling. It's been an unusually hot summer in Nornholt, and the faint breeze through the windows does little to take the edge off the heat. A fly buzzes across the chamber where Lady Calypso Argus likes to hold her meetings. The thought of all six of you cramming onto the benches around that table makes the heat feel even more oppressive.

A few of you eye the door. Lady Argus asked each of you to meet her here today, this morning, and she's not generally a woman to keep people waiting. The six of you know each other by reputation if not due to a shared investigation at Argus Inquiries; the company has any number of inquisitors in the field at any given time, so some of you have worked together, while others have not. What you have in common is the knowledge hat Argus Inquiries is a tight operation, and Lady Argus a stern overseer.

The fly lands on the table. It jerks forward and backward in fits and starts.

Perhaps some conversation might make the wait less disagreeable?
OOC:
Everyone, please introduce your PC. Maybe say something about how long you've been working for Argus Inquiries, and what the others might know about you. Note that some of you have likely done cases for the agency before, but others may be brand new. It's up to you. Some of you have likely worked on cases together even.

I encourage you to post a picture of your character and to say where they are, or what they are doing. I'll hopefully have Internet access again sometime tomorrow, but if not, feel free to carry on any IC conversations you might want to have.

[ +- ] Barvek Portrait
Just shy of a meter tall, the old gnome, Barvek, takes the seat in the corner. After glancing at the door he says, "This is rather unusual behavior, but I wouldn't be worried yet. If I've learned anything in my past three years of working here, it's that we can expect Lady Argus to come through for those under her employ." He leans back in the chair.

[ +- ] Portrait
Sitting at the table is a black-haired catfolk, her green eyes cast downward at the door lock she has in her possession. It looks rusted and dirty, a sign it was thrown away, or at least was due for a good cleaning before Nera took it. Currently she is using her lockpicks to fiddle with it, getting some practice in despite how busy this morning has been.

"She is a friend to me, must be a good reason." Her voice is soft, and despite trying to sound like it's no big deal the curiosity of these circumstances is obvious in her sentence. In truth for the past few months a great many things Lady Argus did intrigued her during her employment, her first real job.

[ +- ] Nekuur (a bit blurred...)
Standing against the wall just left of the entrance is Nekkur, the half-catfolk that you all know as Nornholt's so called priest of Fortuna. Indeed, he is well known for the time spend in devotion to the Lady of Luck at the gambling tables... However, it is also common knowledge that his mother, a respected businesswoman from the middle city, is one of Lady Argus' original investors and Nekkur as been an inquisitor for longer than most. Having been around for almost a decade, he has heard about all the others, even having done some simple jobs with Barvek back in the day. He take note of how Nera, the newest recruit, is playing with the lock in her hands.

Unworried by the Lady's absence, Nekurr playfully throws a coin in the air. As he catches it again he looks around "Anyone up for a bet? I'm guessing 10 more minutes and the Lady will be gracing us with her presence. I'll put down this piece" he opens his hand showing his bet.

Tronus sits with his arms folded over his broad chest his eyes shut, "She will arrive when she arrives, why are you younglings so impatient?" Tronus comments his eyes still shut as he sits like a rock on the bench.

"I think you are just cranky." Not bothering to look up Nera can't help but let a little teasing fly, giggling slightly.

"Cranky? This is how I always am."

Barvek produces a pipe and lights it. "You'd think you'd at least have the decency to be polite to the new recruit, Tronus." he says and takes a puff. He blows out a smoke ring towards Tronus and asks, "I can't recall, just how long have you been with Argus my surly friend?"

Hilda looks at the others in the room with a bit of a wide eyed expression, whether from fear or excitement it’s not really clear. His long dark green robes seem to be fairly new and he’s constantly fiddles with something in his hand. He almost speaks a couple of times but leaves interjecting a shade too long and one of the others steps in before he can leading him to appear to be almost twitching in his chair.

Mengus smacks the book shut "when is she coming i'm bored"
Jul 22, 2019 11:28 am
Tronus cracks open an eye and raises an eyebrow, "Decency and Politeness? I was never hired to baby new recruits, she's been found by Lady Argus so within her skill set she has just as much clout as the rest of us to get a job done. Doesn't matter if today's her first day or she's been with Lady Argus for years. That said I think she needs to eat more, you still look like you aren't getting enough to eat." Tonus states digressing quickly into something he's said several times lost in the racial and cultural gaps addressing Nera directly a ham sized hand opened towards her direction, "Right after this job I'll treat you to a good meal and ale, you can eat, laugh, and drink till you pass out.".

"I come and go as needed, sometimes there's something of a personal nature that needs looking into from my clan about matters so I travel about. I figure in a few more decades the area will change enough I might not be needed here or I might be needed elsewhere." he muses.

Tonus smirks a bit when Mengus announces the current problem in the room for himself.
Jul 22, 2019 7:57 pm
"Ah, well...okay. It could be fun." Nera looks a bit baffled by how forward Tronus is, quickly realizing he will likely speak his mind on any and all issues. But maybe that just show he cares? Nera isn't entirely sure. "Times have been difficult for me, maybe it'll do some good?"
Jul 22, 2019 9:14 pm
"Ah yes, it will be fun now that you joined Argus’. Good luck for you, I’d say." Nekurr looks at Tronus, who he often met in taverns after a long night of "praying". "As long as you stay away from the grumpy dwarf here, you’re sure to have a good time" the half cat says jokingly with a smile, to further provoking Tronus.

OOC:
Still unpacking, but things are calming down. Thanks for bearing with me!

The creak of the front door opening cuts the conversation short. Against the mid-morning sunlight, you see the silhouette of a woman short of stature and thin of build: Lady Calypso Argus. The door shuts, showing that her brown skin is perfectly dry despite the balmy weather outside. She gives you all a single nod. "Apologies for my tardiness."

The woman crosses the stone floor quickly and takes a seat at the head of the long, wooden table. You take spots on the benches running the length of the table. Your employer then lets out a sigh. "I pride myself on my punctuality. But our mayor... He has a different idea of time. He came calling early this morning. Seems an old brigand we've had in the town jail has escaped, and he wants me to help find him. We certainly live in interesting times. But that's my task for the moment. For the six of you, I have something I hope will be a bit... simpler."

The lady pours herself a glass of water from a decanter on the table and takes a sip. "This heat!" She sits up straighter and continues. "I'd like the six of you to take on a different inquiry. The client is a noblewoman named Olarie Dribbage. She's lived in Tamalir all her life, but for the past few weeks, she's been living in her uncle's place just outside Nornholt. Seems her uncle is missing. His name is Vizeron Dribbage. Been gone from the property for nearly a year. She says someone broke in a couple nights ago, so she ought to take ownership of the place to keep it safe. But to do that, she has to prove her uncle's truly gone--whether that means he's no longer sound of mind or body... or something worse. Your job, then, is to find out what happened to the uncle. Where is Vizeron Dribbage? Is he still alive?"

"You all, of course, know how to do this job. But some ideas might be to try the Nornholt Library or the Church of St. Durbin to dig up information on the property. Seems it's a lucrative little farm; the family allowed the Order of St. Durbin to locate a cemetery on the land and gets rents from the church to this day. Not bad when none of the farms 'round here are worth a squat after the Dragon Wars ravaged this area. The burglary might be another thread to pull. You might try the constabulary to learn more. Or maybe the folks in the Lower City have heard rumors about it. And I wager you'll be wanting to visit the house itself. You'll find it not far from the town's northern wall. Just take the Hills Gate and take the path east."

She looks across the table and makes eye contact with each one of you in turn. "I don't expect this inquiry to take you more than a few days to resolve. For a few of you, this will be your first case, or close to it." She looks to Mengus, Hildar, and Nera. "But if I didn't think you were up to it, you wouldn't be here." She then looks to Nekurr, Barvek, and Tronus. "As for you veterans, I trust you old hands to see that these newcomers are treated as equals, you hear me?"

"Any questions?"
Jul 23, 2019 3:39 am
"None here milady. And you can count on me and Nekurr to look after the new blood."
Jul 23, 2019 4:35 am
"Whispers of the truth reach even the lowest of society, we will see it through." Nera cracks the lock, and stows it for now.

Tronus stands not really elevating him that much considering his height and gives Lady Argus a slight bow.

"So are we splitting up to investigate various leads and locations at the same time or going through this all together for some on the job training for everyone to see how we each work?" Tronus addresses the rest to get a consensus.

"finally the lady came"
Lady Argus scowls at Mengus. "If you have a problem, Lord Mengus, I suggest you take it up with the mayor himself. Of course, I don't need to remind you that there's a clearly marked road back to Castle Tagis should you decide inquisition isn't fit for you."
Remnant says:

The woman opens a folding fan and flaps it a few times to cool off. "I trust you all to make the right decision whether to split up and cover more ground or to act as a full team. I do value you veterans. But a couple points you should keep in mind:" She holds up a thumb. "First, Lady Dribbage is paying for six inquisitors, so when you call on her, she'd better see six of you." She then holds up her index finger. "Second, the interested party is expecting you at her house by mid-afternoon. That gives you about four hours. If you stay together, you won't have time to visit more than two or three spots before the rendezvous. Splitting up will let you visit a few more, I'd reckon."
OOC:
GM's note: I actually prefer that the party stay together most of the time. However, in an investigative game like this, we won't role-play out mundane information-seeking in many cases. Instead, routine background information searches can be abstracted out to a roll or two.
Lady Argus fans herself and looks to you as if asking if you have more questions.
