[IC] Death & Taxes (Session 1)

Dec 29, 2019 4:25 am
Over the next few weeks, things return to normal. You take on various inquiries in teams and individually: finding lost cats, shadowing errant husbands, that sort of thing.

Lady Argus is mostly preoccupied with her own inquiries, but she does purchase a small team of horses and a wagon for use on inquiries that require travel to other cities. You get the impression that she's interested in taking on more jobs in nearby cities, but not in expanding operations fully there just yet. For the most part, she leaves the day-to-day operation of the business to you, though.

Thus it's nothing out of the ordinary when a jittery Free-Cities Elf comes calling one morning while you all happen to be in the headquarters.
Dec 29, 2019 8:18 pm
The Elf wears a fine, leather jerkin with an ornate satin cape trailing behind. Her features betray some Human ancestry, perhaps, especially the dusting of freckles that set off her green eyes. Her red hair is cut surprisingly short.

As she stands in the doorway, she peers in a bit trepidatiously. "Um... I take it this is Argus Inquiries? I need your help. Fast."
OOC:
No rush; just getting things moving.

Feel free to give a bit of insight into what you've been up to over the last few weeks if you like. And maybe say what you're doing in the office at the moment. Remember there's a map of the place in the IC Resource thread if you'd like a refresher of what it looks like.

You still have time to spend your cash and XP, of course. Please do that too when you get the chance. You might want to make sure you have some basic travel items (bedroll, flask, pack, rations, etc.), but remember you do get a per diem of 25 silver for some stuff.

OOC:
Let's see how gambling goes, since Nekurr would have spend a significant time "praying" :D
Dec 30, 2019 9:10 pm
"You might to be a bit specific lass otherwise if its it's something illegal we may not be the right people to assist..." Tronus states a new large shield in his one hand the other hi holding a rag.
Dec 31, 2019 12:03 am
These past few weeks have been a flurry of activity between feeling patronized at being asked to collect runaway cats, irritated when said chases involved following through rather precarious pathways, and smug when she caught one. There were other jobs too, but those didn't stick out in her mind as much.

At the moment Nera is in the middle of rummaging through the kitchen, looking for a suitable snack to consume while there is time to rest. As she approaches the cracked open door she starts to hear the Elf lady. Not one to announce her presence to an unknown third party without determining their motives she hovers by the door, keep still as her ears perk up to hear anymore juicy details.

OOC:
Somebox: LOL at the cat-chasing thing. ;)
The young woman swiftly closes the front door behind her. "Nothing illegal! Why, I'd just as soon..." She blushes at Tronus's allegation. "Look, what I need you to do is all on the up and up. But I do ask for discretion. You'll need to be discreet, I mean. You see, I've made a mistake. I think I need your help or I might lose my job."
Jan 1, 2020 10:48 pm
Nekurr enters Argus Inquiries, overhearing the conversation. "Loose your job? the cleric utters a quick blessing under his breath as he looks at the elven lady. " if I may ask, what job would require such discretion?"
Jan 2, 2020 12:02 am
OOC:
I try not to make my posts too silly given the serious nature of this game, but I can't help it sometimes.
Nera eats a grape as she continues to listen. Oooo, a scandal perhaps?
Jan 2, 2020 4:35 am
The young-seeming woman sidesteps over to the window, her back against the wall, and looks over her shoulder at the street outside. "Look, I can't risk anyone even knowing I'm talking to you." Returning her gaze to your company, she adds, "My name's Rathin Vintoloness. I work for the Baron. Tax collection, bookkeeping, that sort of thing. Been working for the Baron going on twenty years." She must get her longevity from her Elven side. "So, the job is pretty simple. I just need you to find one of my tax collectors. But I need to know you can keep your mouth shut about this."
OOC:
Feel free to try to calm her down if you'd like. In this case, let me know what skill you're trying and make your pitch IC, and I'll give you the difficulty for the roll. Possibilities might include Charm, Coercion, Deception, or Leadership. As always, Vigilance will tell you if she's lying or keeping something back. Difficulty is Average (PP), and only one PC may make the check to simplify things.
Jan 2, 2020 3:21 pm
Tronus stares at the woman.
OOC:
I'd be at YYG to calm her anyone else got better. After dealing with the Thistlerocks Tronus has gotten accustomed to being a leader and field commander

Bruv sits hunched over a desk, studying a book about some minor case-law. He raises an eyebrow at the mention of a missing tax-collector, then he mutters, "Simple? Don'tchya know, neva say "the job is simple"..."
Jan 2, 2020 5:55 pm
The woman is obviously agitated, and Tronus thinks he detects a bit of disgust in the woman's pronunciation of "tax collector," like maybe there's some bad blood there?

At any rate, she remains agitated. Calming her somehow might be a good plan.
OOC:
Charm will be Average (PP) with a boost, since she seems to want to be reassured.
Jan 2, 2020 8:41 pm
"I'll let the others weigh in when there are more details but I think you mean can we be discrete? If the missing person is dead, into something nefarious such as slave trafficking or demonic summoning, or spending collected tax money in access... we'd likely report things that needed reporting, the last would likely get them an additional boxing in the ear if I'm honest. You have a name and home address to go along with the missing civil servant? Miss Vintoloness well need to discuss things over with everyone also before taking the job some of us are a bit old to be gossiping also.."

That approach seems more like Coercion to me -- brutal honesty, I think. Care to re-roll that as YGGB vs. RR? Or else soften the approach and stick with the roll as-is?

Hearing the voices in the common area Hildar rubs his eyes for a second and pushes himself away from his notes. The recent experiences with the Dribbage matter having lead him down a number of....enlightening areas for his research. Certainly his tutors would never approve of his current studies but he can see a number of potential ways to apply some of Vizeron's methods, with the proper controls of course. As he listens more closely his curiosity is piqued at the unfamiliar voice and he heads to investigate further.

Seeing Tronus talking with the newcomer Hildar pauses in the doorway to see how things play out before making his presence more known.

OOC:
Not sure if I can try to charm her on top of tronus dwarven charms ;)
Nekurr puts a hand on Tronus should and smiles. "What my little friend here means to say is that we will put all our efforts in finding this missing tax collector. All very discreetly I can assure you Miss Vintoloness. He add a tough job recently and is a bit grumpy. Demons ahah, He's been reading too many books. " The cleric laughs it off and points at Nera "She'll be happy to look for something different this time. Great promisse finding things that one, let me tell you." After reassuring the elf, the half-catfolk tries to find a bit more into the issue "So, what can else you tell us about this disappearance?"
OOC:
Can I use the triumph to maybe have someone recognising her from somewhere or maybe have heard rumours about this so we get extra info? Not sure that is triumphal enough :)

Kinda want to stick with the roll since there's threats. Hey blunt can be charming? Even hitting the ground from three stories up feels a little sharp... Is two threat enough to get her to worry about things she wasn't before? XD Well it's not like he's on fire right now right?

We can go with the first roll, and use Nekurr's as an assist -- he smooths things over a bit, offering a blue die. We'll use the one rolled, which had an advantage on it, bringing the result to 4 success, 1 threat.
The woman seems to relax a bit as she regards the Dwarf and Half-Catfolk in turn. "Report things that needed reporting," she repeats with a stern nod. "I'm glad to hear you say that, Sir Dwarf. Sorry, didn't get the name." She nods to Nera next. "And glad to hear you're good at finding things, Madame Catfolk. That's why I'm interesting in hiring you."

She approaches slowly. "May I sit?" Vintoloness spins one of the wooden chairs backward and straddles it, leaning forward on the back and plopping one booted foot on either side. "You see, this might be a case of stolen tax monies, and that's what I need you to find out. But in this case, the person you'd report it to is me, since the tax collector in question is one of my employees."
OOC:
1 Threat -- let's say she's taken someone's favorite chair, so the next social check made against her gets 1 setback. :)
