Isra, you help tend to some of the soldiers’ armour and weapons, there’s no forge so it’s mainly fixing dents and sharpening swords. The rest of you catch a little break, it’s been a long day but you have the feeling that there’s a long way to go yet.

After a little while, Governor Nighthill gets you and leads you up the stairs to the parapet surrounding the keep. The sight that meets you is not encouraging. The raiding force is surrounding the keep and it seems to continue to grow in numbers. "They just kind of...stand there...the reports I’ve gotten makes it sound like they’re just looting the town. I think maybe they’re as interested in keeping us in here as we are. Less interference." Nighthill looks out at the invaders and points down to a figure in a purple robe, a human woman with short black hair holding a black halberd. Next to her is a hulking, blue half-dragon in splint mail also with purple markings. They’re surrounded by about a dozen guards. The woman says something to a couple of cultists and they run off, "That’s their commander...".

Governor Nighthill sighs quietly before he points in the direction of what appears to be a temple. "That’s the town temple, a temple to Chauntea. One of the priests have told me that there are people hiding out there believing it to be the perfect sanctuary. But I’m afraid that with this kind of force," he gestures towards the raiders outside, "they won’t be safe there. I know we’ve just met, that this isn’t really your fight and that this is a big ask of you...but if you could go to the temple and bring these people here...we’d be forever grateful".
OOC:
I realise I was probably a bit overeager in terms of how much I tried to move the story along without giving you a chance to RP, so I broke my previous post in half so it makes more sense now. I’ll try and be mindful of that in the future, sorry still learning 🙂 I haven’t forgotten your insight check Kel, unfortunately it just didn’t hit a DC to reveal anything

'I will certainly try.' Octavia speaks as she surveys the scene. Linan's death weighedon her mind, but she reminded herself that at least her husband and children were now safe. Now she had a chance to safe even more. Solana wouldn't forgive her if she turned her back on these people.

'Though it appears myself and Kirsk are not built for stealth, so we may want a different tactic. If you are coming along of course.

Seeing the intimidating figure on the horizon causes Zachary a slight upset stomach.

Do you really want to go to ... in that direction?

Zachary points his trembling finger
May 16, 2020 7:10 am
Governor Nighthill looks at Zachary, "I know this is a lot to ask of a stranger that just happened to come to our town at the wrong time, but I fear those people will die if we don’t act and...I’m no good to anyone right now". A flash of guilt spreads across his face for a moment while he rubs his injured arm. He then looks around and shouts for Escobert to join you. "Leaving through the gate would be suicide. If you accept the mission, then we need to figure out a way to get you out of the keep safely. Escobert, you know this keep better than anyone, do you have any ideas?". The dwarf thinks for a second and then grins. "The tunnel! There’s an old tunnel runnin’ from the cellar all the way te the stream south of town. It was made just for this type o’ occasion, but since the keep ‘as never been besieged before, it’s never been used". He takes a huge ring filled with iron and brass keys in all shapes and sizes from his belt. "Which one...hmm...ah! ‘Ere it is!", he grabs a big, rusted iron key and hands it to you.

Governor Nighthill looks at you, "The stream is shallow enough to walk through, if you follow it east you’ll get to the temple. IF you get the opportunity, maybe it would a good idea to have a little...conversation with one of the raiders, just to see if we could find out what they’re doing here. But don’t do anything foolish, the safety of you and the people in that temple is paramount...can I count on you?
May 16, 2020 1:24 pm
"Of course, we will get the people to safety. If we go out the tunnel, you might want to post a guard at the door in case we are compromised or if we need to use the route to get back into the keep." Kirsk waits for a moment thinking, "How many people are in the church?"
May 16, 2020 1:33 pm
Octavia puts a hand on Zachary's shoulder, and gives a gentle smile. 'It's okay. You don't have to join us. You've already saved us once, and that is enough if you do not want to risk anymore.'

'However there are people out there who need our help, and you have already proven your spells can alter the flow of a battle. If you do come I promise I will do my best to keep you safe. We wouldn't be going as 4 individuals, but as a team, and I assure you I know from experience those are far stronger.

She looks back at the mayor, giving Zachary time to think things over. 'Haven't had a good sewer romp in a while. Perhaps we can to hit one a little less hard then usual, knock 'em out and bring them back to be questioned.'

"I can certainly be non-lethal, if the situation demands it." Kel volunteers. "Can't say I've ever fought in the sewer though. Doesn't sound very pleasant, but I'm up for new experiences."

Octavia's words echo in Zachary, like an old memory or family inheritance, reliving the days when her mother helped the treatment of the sick and wounded.

I ... I will help you. If I can be of any use, I will.

Governor Nighthill nods in appreciation. "Thank you. You coming to the town at this moment feels like fate. Luck smiles upon us. He looks at Kirsk, "We can post a guard inside the tunnel, we don’t want anyone to draw attention to it. There’s probably two, three, maybe four dozen. It’s hard to know the exact numbers. He looks at Kel, "If you can, that could be useful...but don’t for a second hesitate to use lethal force on these bastards. Nighthill shakes the hand of each of you. Be careful, we don’t know whether there’ll be raiders at the temple or not, but expect the worst...good luck".

Escobert take you all the way down to the cellar while he explains about the tunnel. "Okay, so the tunnel were made fer if the keep was ever under siege. He laughs ruefully, It leads to the stream on the outskirts of town, so if ye were ever locked in the keep ye could sneak out te get water. If you were te look at it from outside, it would just look like a sewer grate. So hopefully the raiders haven’t given it a second look". He moves a few crates and barrels to reveal a very old, rusty gate. "It should be a straight shot from ‘ere, I don’t...think...anythin’ dwells in there.... It takes a little time, quite a lot of effort and a whole lot of swearing in both common and dwarven to open the rusted gate, but working together you manage to do it in the end. "It’s very narrow so you’ll ‘ave to walk single file. Best of luck"

You say your goodbyes and walk along the tunnel, a guard following you in the rear. Thick spiderwebs cover much of it, but otherwise it’s clear of any dangers and you eventually make it to the locked gate at the end. You see that, as Escobert explained, it’s been shaped to look like a sewer gate to hide it’s true purpose, which explains why the raiders haven’t posted any guards here...at least as far that you can see, your overview of the stream isn’t great. There’s a small bit of tunnel at the other side of the gate which obscures your view to each side of the stream. You look at the gate and it looks in even worse condition than the one in the other end.
OOC:
Whoever is in the front of the group, you choose who, give me a dexterity check
May 16, 2020 6:42 pm
OOC:
Kirsk has dark vision so he was going to be in the front to see as well as shield the others but if someone else wants to take the lead they can
May 16, 2020 6:48 pm
OOC:
Octavia would offer first due to her shield and experience, but will accept Kirsk being able to see easier.
May 16, 2020 7:15 pm
OOC:
Might be best for Kirsk to go first, since he can see and is sufficiently tanky, with Octavia at the rear to protect the squishier party members in the middle. Probably with Kel in 2nd and Zach in 3rd.
May 16, 2020 7:55 pm
OOC:
Sounds like a good plan either way. Man, everything about this screams trap, how exciting :D
May 16, 2020 8:00 pm
OOC:
ok here goes
OOC:
great...

OOC:
No trap, but...
Kirsk, you put the key in the lock and try to turn it. Like the other gate it sticks and you have to use force to turn it and- SNAP! The key snaps in half and is stuck in the lock. You have no way of unlocking the door.
May 16, 2020 8:17 pm
OOC:
Octavia at the back sounds good.
The snap did not sound good. 'How's it looking up there?' She asks quietly. 'If it sounds like what I think any chance of breaking the door? If not I can.. Try and make another key, but it will take a long time'
OOC:
Should have used channel divinity make a copy first...
May 16, 2020 8:20 pm
OOC:
Even if you were to make a successful copy, the part of the old key in the lock is irretrievable. So it can’t be unlocked or picked
May 16, 2020 8:29 pm
"the key snapped in half and is stuck in the door. I think it rusted solid." Kirsk examines the lock and door... "We may be able to knock it down but any loud noise will draw attention...
OOC:
rolling investigation, if it’s perception add +2

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20+1)

(11) + 1 = 12

May 16, 2020 8:47 pm
OOC:
It’s not just the lock that has been worn down by weather and time, the whole gate is rusted and almost corroded in places. There’s no doubt that it can broken down
May 16, 2020 9:28 pm
Kirsk turns away towards the others, "the door has not aged well and is rusted shut. It looks like it is damaged enough that it may be able to be broken down to get past, but if we do, it potentially leaves an opening to the keep, and it may alert those outside... any suggestions? Octavia, you've worked with metal the most would you take a look?" Kirsk moves as tight as he can against the walls to allow Octavia to go by if she wants.
