Character Creation

Mar 9, 2016 3:08 pm
Go ahead and discuss character ideas here.

I will be allowing anything in the core rules. Anything homebrew or outside of core needs prior authorization from me.
Characters will be generated with point-buy, with 20 points to spend.

Good rules reference is here: d20pfsrd.com

Point-Buy Calculator is here

The campaign will be set in the Pathfinder world of Golarion. That should give you some context for your backstory.

I'm debating a summoner if that'd be allowed, from the Advanced Player's Guide. I'm also curious to try something different, a shield focused fighter.

Summoners are something I won't allow. They mess with Action Economy too much and are quite powerful (too many shenanigans).

Fair enough! Let's try something I'd never usually play: a more tactical, probably defensive fighter.

A very good thing to have in a party! So far I know we have a cavalier (Jabes) and now a defensive fighter :)

Any guidelines on races? Mind if I look through Ultimate Combat and Ultimate Equipment for ideas? I'm looking at the Armor Master, Thunderstriker, or Tower Shield Specialist archtypes.

Heh, I just found out there's a gunslinger class.

Races are usually pretty well balanced. If there's one that you think may not be allowed then please ask :)

You could be a gunslinger if you wanted to, I won't stop you. Pretty much anything published by Paizo is allowed, including races, feats, and classes (with the exception of summoner)

NOOOOOO!!!! Ok :p

I always tend too play rogue or ranger types, so I'll avoid the gunslinger. I wanna do something different.

There is also a Player's Guide for this AP with some information for the players. You may also pick a campaign trait from the player's guide linked above, and one other trait (not a campaign trait) for this list.

If no one plays a healer then I will implement some house rules to help out on that front, because it sucks to be REQUIRED to have a healer type.

I've never really done a healer outside an MMO either, but I'd wanna look for options besides a straight Cleric. It feels a bit blase.

Don't worry too much about it, we'll come up with some variant healing rules if no one wants to be a healer, since it's not a popular job :)

Healers keep people alive! I'm looking at a Witch.

I also have someone looking at playing an Oracle, which also has healing capabilities, so that may be covered already

You will also have to determine among yourselves whether you are coming to the starting town, Sandpoint, as a group or if you've all come for different reasons.

So, since I literally *just* got the Core Rule Book in the humble bundle (finally managed to download it last night), I'm still really really new to the world and mechanics of pathfinder, so you guys may have to be a little patient with me... right now my only experience with it is through the Glass Cannon podcast (a live play podcast that actually has two players that are a Gunslinger and a Witch! They seem like pretty great classes!)

Not a problem. I've found d20pfsrd.com to be an amazing resource for Pathfinder. It has EVERYTHING that's been released, aside from the Modules.

They have a nice character creation outline as well, it's right here.

Also, Hero Lab has a free starter kit that will walk you through the whole character generation process, though it doesn't include everything in the system.

The Alchemist seems like it might be fun to play, although maybe not ideal for a first-timer like me... also thinking of maybe doing a Monk?
