Character Creation

Character's will be created using the Standard Array of Ability scores found on Page 13 of the Player's Handbook prior to selecting Race or Class. These scores are: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15.

For those of you who don't have access to the Player's Handbook (called PHB for short), I actually find the free Character Creation Tool found at D&D Beyond to be excellent, possibly preferable even, as it takes a lot of the manual work out of the process.
Choosing "Standard" will allow you to generate a character step-by-step. Choosing "Quick Build" will ask you to input your character's Race and Class, and then automatically apply the Standard Array of Ability scores in the most ideal way based on your Race/Class choice, though it allows you to go back and modify anything you like to make your character more personalized and unique to your style of gameplay.

During the equipment selection section, you have the option of rolling for gold and manually shopping for each item, or selecting a pre-built Equipment Pack. I personally love the Equipment Pack option, not realizing how ,uch I loathe shopping for gear, until I didn't have to anymore. Be advised that selecting a pre-built Equipment Pack saves the player the tedious task of shopping for gear, but usually leaves the PC with only 10 starting GP, which the player must use to purchase any other equipment not assigned to them based on Class, Background, or Pre-Built Equipment Pack; the remainder of unspent Gold becomes the PC's starting money when the adventure begins.

I made the option of allowing players to use the 5e Character Sheet template. If you use the D&D Beyond Character Creation Tool, and don't feel like transferring your stats over to the 5e Template, you can just leave a link to your D&D Beyond character here for myself and the other players to look at.

I'm not too much of a stickler on party backstories. I've never had a problem with the old tried-and-true "you meet in a tavern" setup. It's up to you all to decide if and how well your PCs knew one another before the events of this adventure takes place. However the adventure begins on the foundation that your PCs each share a mutual friend/acquaintance, a dwarven businessman by the name Gundren Rockseeker, who has hired your services in escorting a wagon of supplies from the city of Neverwinter, to a small town called Phandalin. Possibly your PCs' connections to Gundren is your only commonality to one another, and you find yourselves intertwined with each other as newly arranged coworkers. Your party's backstory is entirely up to you.

Once your character is created, please leave a link to the character sheet if necessary, and maybe just a little bit about who your character is: Name, Race, Class... A brief, cliff-notes version of what they're all about. It doesn't have to be a book of every detail of your PC's life and history. Basically, a quick overview of what the average person might be able to read or pick up off of an initial introduction and maybe five or ten minutes in your PC's company should do it.

For the party at large, I had a few character ideas kicking around but didn't want to steal anyone's thunder. What was everyone thinking of playing, and was anyone wanting to have some kind of connection to another character before start of the game? Happy to play into a connection!

As for my ideas, I was planning on either a Fighter, Sorcerer or Cleric. It's my first round with PbP, so looking to keep it simple there. Lemme know if anything stands out as 'stealing thunder' or you wanna connect our PC's before the game starts!

Here's my fighter!

Name: Mathias
Race: Human, Variant
Class: Fighter
Former Occupation: Sword for Hire

Mathias has lived a long life, much of it in the employ of one army or another. More content serving others than leading troops, he was known more in the ranks for his stout loyalty and steely grip in the face of danger. His career was cut short, however, when he was deployed by a somewhat arrogant noble against a dragon who had been terrorizing his fiefdom. The beast turned out to be a terrible foe that slew many of his comrades, swallowing some whole and roasting others alive with it's breath. Though Mathias is stout and true, he will never forget the horrors he saw at the jaws of the dragon, and dreads the day he may see one again.

Long story short, I'd like to play a fighter that has a deep seated fear. It'll be fun to turn the normal "I can face anything" trope on it's head with an 'almost everything TM' clause.

He's pretty brass tacks so I can get used to the format and have room to grow and play within the character!

Hmm, I think I'll leave the open hand monk I had created for my friends LMoP game on hiatus until it hopefully resumes at some point. In the meantime, was thinking of maybe a rogue, bard, or, cleric. If going ranger, would the revised ranger that wotc had written a while back be eligible?

I'm not sure what this one is or have access to it. We'll just use the Ranger Class in the PHB so everyone's on the same page. Actually, if you can find this revised ranger information for me I'm willing to take a look at it.

@AOC1996: I wasn't expecting the human variant racial type, but it looks good!

I submitted a character:

Name: Quinny Dorah/ King Dorah
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Barbarian
Background: Charlatan

He/She is a queen! She believes she is despite the racial prejudice that orcs are ugly. Its confidence in herself that pushes her to go on adventures with sass. "Call me ugly again and I'll slap your face a hundred times in one second!"

Her other personality(Charlatan background) is King Dorah, a dashing half-orc explorer. He's the con artist in this one man/woman duo.

He/She doesn't have that high Charisma to be the group's face :)

Her skills are: Deception, Intimidation, Athletics, Perception, and Sleight of Hand

I was thinking maybe a wild magic sorcerer? Someone who's only recently started to be able to somewhat control their magic after a life of accidentally unleashing chaotic magic on their surroundings. A charming guy who's innately nervous about exploding everyone he meets leaving him constantly jumpy and thus more likely to activate random spells. I'd be okay with the DM randomly forcing wild magic surge rolls to help underline that if you want to, otherwise it can be smaller things for flavour

@Mallow: Character approved! Just be sure to keep the party abreast of which personality is currently present so I don't get my pronouns mixed up.

@Sassafras: I think the wild magic surges might be fun to play. I'll just have to remember to make rolls for it. I'm a somewhat forgetful/scatterbrained DM sometimes, so I have a feeling your sorcerer's Wild Magic may not activate quite as frequently as Sorcerers in universes with more diligent DMs. But who knows, I might be more on top of those things with the PbP format allowing me to focus on remembering to make them...

Haha, it's all good. We can try and go with it and worst case we just drop that aspect of the character. I'm not looking to put too much extra work on your shoulders :)

No worries, I understand. I've never played the 5e ranger as is, just have read that's it's rather weak/bland compared to the other classes/previous iterations. Don't think it ever became official though. Here's the link:

@ctme2000: Let me look it over today after work and I'll have a response for you this evening. On first glance it doesn't seem excessively jacked or complicated on my end, but I'm new to 5e, so let me read into it a bit more and ask around to see what others' experience with it was. I'm leaning to that being alright to use, but let me make sure. I'll give you an answer this evening.

@AOC1996: Did you pick a Background for Mathias? I don't see one listed on your D&D Beyond character sheet. I would guess soldier, but maybe you have something else in mind. Also, Allignment?

Ah! Yes I did. You guessed correctly, he is a Soldier's background, and his alignment I did not select, but it is Neutral Good. He generally tries to do what's morally right, and will go to great lengths to achieve that end, even if it sometimes means ignoring authority figures!

@ctme2000: I'm sending you a PM about the ranger fix.

@AOC1996: If you put that Background on your D&D Beyond character sheet, it should give you the ability to select a couple more proficiencies and character options.

Not sure why it's not showing, but I did do that, thank you for looking out for me! Following the link, it's not showing, but on my own sheet it is. My proficiencies are Athletics, History, Nature, Survival and Intimidation.

Are feats/variant human available in this game?

@ctme2000: The Fighter is a human variant.

Yup, noticed that. Just wanted to verify, thanks!

@therecusant: I approved your barbarian. I noticed on your character sheet that you didn't add your +2 proficiency bonus to the skills you have proficiency in. It's calculating your Ability modifiers only.
