Kalajel's free games and resources 2: The sequel

Jul 22, 2020 11:36 pm
Hello everyone,

I was asked on the Discord to clean up my resources and free games thread (still available here), and sort the links by categories. I figured a brand new thread was the best solution for it. So this will become the new free resources and games thread. I'll still use the old one and sort through the links there to classify them here, but eventually, the old thread will slip into obscurity (or I might delete it, I don't know...). So without further ado, let's start this (thought the next posts will most likely be placeholders for now)!

Table of Contents

(Note: Concerning the dead link for the Adventure Time game based on D&D 4th, I checked the pdf I had saved of it, and the creator left his e-mail address in it. It might be worth contacting him and get a pdf of the game that way: ilitchev@gmail.com)

Free Game: Sovereign. This might very well be the second game here in real danger of receiving a cease and desist. The creator of the game is currently receiving a lot of flack in his reddit thread for having ripped off a bunch of tables from a variety of other systems and including them unchanged in his game. His last message was that he was going to consult with a lawyer...

Someone on Reddit made an exhaustive list of RPGs designed for children. While most must be purchased, a small amount are either free or PWYW. Even those which can be bought, some are pretty darn cheap. There is also a link for RPGs aimed at teens, but this list is less exhaustive and contains less information (such as which is free and which is paid).
Speaking of RPGs for children, there is The Cloud Dungeon which is not on the list. It is free-ish, you can either purchase it or get it for free in print-n-play format. There is also A Perfect Rock (also not on the list) which is PWYW on itch.io.

Maps
Maps and other player handouts. Anything which you can print and show to your players (or maybe even a few things you won't show them), and map generators will be listed here.

gozzys.com, maps and map generators.

Paratime Design's site. A lot of free and cheap maps available there. Well, technically, there are a few other resources as well, but since a good 95+% of this site is about maps, I've decided to put it here instead of the "a little bit of everything" post.

Ye Old Map Maker. A Flash-based online map-making tool. Though it is possible to buy versions for your various mobile devices...

E-adventures tile mapper. Allows you to create your own dungeon maps using the various E-adventures tiles. May be shut down eventually, so they recommend using Tiamat instead...

Forum Ancient Coin's gallery of ancient world maps. Useful for historical or pseudo-historical games.

Davesmaper. A mapmaker using geomorph dungeon tiles. Seems to be very glitchy and it would not quite work on my computer. If this site gives you trouble as well, let me know, and I'll move it to the Gone But Not Forgotten section...

Fantastic Maps. Maps and how to make maps.

How to turn your sudoku into a dungeon.

Free Maps Share. Also has a few other downloads, but very few still work...

Inkewell Ideas map generators.

Sign up to a newsletter to get free maps.

A map creation tool.

A huge online and HD map of Midgard from Kobold Press.

Dungeonscrawl Beta A flash-based OSR-style map-maker. It is in beta, so a few of the tools are a bit wonky to use, but the results are still very nice.

Icograms. An isometric city map designer.

r/imaginarymaps. A reddit page where you can download a bunch of fantasy maps. r/rpgmaps. A reddit with maps for your RPGs. r/battlemaps is another similar reddit. There is also r/dndmaps.

Mipui.net. Another map making tool.

Watabou's Medieval Fantasy City Generator. And his village generator. His one-page dungeon generator. His neighborhood generator. His proecedural generated mansions. His 3D city viewer. And finally, his perilous shores generator. They all seem to have been collected here for convenience's sake...

Beholder Pie's maps.

Galaxy map for Traveller which you can really zoom in or out.

Angela's Maps. She has a Patreon, but if you scroll further down, you can find free maps.

GoAdventureMaps. Just click on "free content" for free maps.

AtaraxianBear's free maps, scroll down a bit...

Excalidraw. Online map-drawing program.

Dungeonografer. Java-based program to create dungeons. works cross-platforms.
Worldographer. As above, but for overland maps + dungeons. Can still run in java or dedicated PC/Mac versions.
Citiographer. Well, I guess you get the gist of it by now...

This mad lad has decided to put up all of his maps on 9gag of all places.

Need a fictional modern city? This City Does Not Exist.

Cartographyassets. Maps and assets.

Forgotten Adventures. Maps, assets, and counters.

A repository of maps somewhat similar to pintrest.

User @mewo2 on Twitter has made several maps, including his Uncharted Atlas collection, his Metropolgeny collection, and if you really want to use those, his Emoji Atlas collection.

DunGen can generate caves and dungeons.

Hexroll. Ax hexcrawl sandbox complete with a list of interesting locations you can download as a zip file (the three horizontal bars on the upper left corner). You can even generate your own hexcrawl sandbox by selecting the little dice icon (again, in the three horizontal bars thingie...).

Fantasy Town Generator. Requires an account.

Treasure Map Generator.

Oubliette, an endless geomorph dungeon.

Here Be Taverns. Several maps of multi-leveld taverns available for download.

Dungeonscrawl. another dungeon drawing tool online.

Download 200 maps for free!

Isometric map maker.

The Fateful Force's Battlemaps.

Hexfriend, a hex map drawer.

Castle Floor Plans.

Planet Map Generator.

Do you need modern maps? This site allows you to download Googlemaps with all the google labels removed. You can even choose different styles. Snazzymaps does the same thing, but it has far more styles to choose from and can also keep labels should you need to keep them. Meanwhile this other site will draw the entire road map for your selected city which can later be customized. Beware that the road map is somewhat pixellated and the customization options are very limited... Also, seems like you can already edit your own Googlemaps on Googlemaps by adding and editing layers. You can even change the style of the map. I tried to fiddle a bit in it and found it rather unintuitive, so the other sites above might be a better option for some of you.

Star Wars Galaxy Maps.

Two free small and unlabeled coastline maps.

Dungeondoodler, another map-creation tool.

I can't believe I overlooked the obvious all this time, the free version of Inkarnate.

A map generator with a futuristic look. Perfect for your sci-fi games.

The Ghost of Mistmoor VTT Maps. Ghost of Mistmoor is an old AD&D adventure from an issue of Dragon Magazine...

Downloadable goodies for Realm of Bethica RPG.

The Paper Demon app. I haven't signed up, so I'm not entirely sure what this consists of exactly, hence why I put it in this section for now. Seems you can draw your own character using prompts, so AI art? You also have a writing portion which I guess is for your own background, or perhaps even creating adventures. The thing that confuses me are the XP and treasures part which seems to indicate there is some sort of game mechanics involved in this. Perhaps even an entire game onto itself? If any of you are brave enough to try it out, please contact me so I can move this to a more appropriate section, if need be.

Online Dice Rollers
A bit of a joke on my last thread... Sure, you won't need 'em here, but what if you need to game in real life and forgot your dice (okay I'm stretching a bit here...). Basically, I'd rather not need them and still list them here than not have them listed here and sorely miss them when I do actually need them...

Rocknrole Circus.

Warhorse Simulations. This one is not a dice roller. It's actually a card tracker for playing some wargames.

Anydice.com. Another one to check dice statistics and averages.

Utilities for dungeon masters.

Beyond Tabletop.

D20 Pro.

RPG Map Editor 2.

Sourceforge. This is a site full of programs to download, so obviously, a few people made some for RPGs. Software.Informer is yet another similar site...

(Edit: since I learnt that this site is not owned by anyone involved with WotC or Hasbro, and is basically piracy, I've decided to remove it.)

Free app for Pentaquest.

A web-based NPC manager.

The free version of Hexographer.

Customizable generator for TTRPGs.

The bag of holding, to track your party's inventory online.

Other Free Games
While this thread's purpose is for free RPGs, I do come across another type of game from time to time which is simply too good to not list here. Card games, board games, war games, etc. all can be found here.

I'm not a super huge fan of chess, and I don't know how many people here are really into it, but if chess is your jam, you might want to check the following links (mostly online stuff):
https://lichess.org
https://www.chess.com
https://chess24.com
https://chesstempo.com

A free boardgame: Pocketciv.

Variants and strategies for many board and war games.

Cheapass Games (and a few other publishers) have made their game available for free.

Ground Zero Games' site. You can get some of their games for free here.

Piecepack. The flexible, portable, affordable board game system.

Ye Olde Inn. Stuff for the old Hero Quest board game.

Free Wargame Rules.

Gutshot. A free western-themed war game.

Super Duper Games. A list of free board games.

Free wargame: Corvus Belli Infinity.

Get Lone Wolf Books. (Choose your own adventures).

Shaun's Free Wargames.

A list of free wargames.

Blue Chillies. Another list of free wargames. You can also check out free board games, card games, miniatures, etc.

War Engine. A free wargame.

Heroes of Feonora. A print and play free RPG board game.

Toymallet 40¢. A parody of Warhammer 40K.

A D&D variant of beer pong... Yeah, I know, not really pen and paper related, but I found it funny enough to include it here...

7 free zombie-themed board games. Scroll down a bit...

Invisible City's (formerly Stonesoup Entertainment) list of free board games.

Free solitair Dr. Who board game.

boardgamegeek's list of free print and play board games.

Interformic Games' GRO.

Armada pnp. A two player strategic game set in the Wing Commander universe.

A Zen guide to pen and paper games.

Collins Epic Wargames. Some of the games listed have a few free downloads for them...

mapsymbs.com make your own wargame counters using special fonts.

Free online version of Split The Hoard. Probably mostly meant more as a "try before you buy/back the Kickstarter"...

Project Aon. The Lone Wolf choose your own adventure books are available for free online.

Gone but not Forgotten
It is the nature of the internet that some site dies. While I can use the waybackmachine internet archive to repair some broken links, others will have never been saved in this archive. Perhaps other types of internet archives exist out there which could have those sites saved, but I do not know of any... Basically, this post will be used to list dead links, just in case someone is a bit more internet savvy than I...

Edit: Turns out there is another internet archive out there. Archive-It which searches using keywords instead of URLs. For exemple, I've made a search with Dungeonslayers here.

Suggestions and Comments
From this point on, posts are for your own suggestions, comments, or to warn me that such and such link is dead... I might post here as well from time to time to inform you of any update. I'd really like this thread to be a bit like a wiki where everyone could maintain it, but that might be outside of the site's capabilities... So the best option will simply be to allow you to post from this point on.
Jul 23, 2020 12:39 am
Great job, man. I'm going to be sure to bookmark this.

Here's a link to a list of SRDs for many popular systems.
Aug 6, 2020 1:38 am
So yeah, so far I've noticed that in my old thread I had a few duplicate links already. Going well so far...
Aug 6, 2020 12:38 pm
A suggestion would be to create a "Table of Contents" with links in the first post. That way you can just click what sort of thing you're looking for and go straight to that post.
Sep 10, 2020 12:39 am
Two first page of my old thread have been transferred here. Going well so far, though I did found a few more duplicate links...
Sep 10, 2020 11:33 pm
I've had an idea which might solve a query I recently received via PM. In a few links I've already posted, it is possible to download some material in language other than English as well as English material, and if memory serve, I did linked to a Swedish game in my old thread (haven't reached that particular post yet). So I was thinking that perhaps I should add a section for games and resources which are entirely in a language other than English. I mean, given the previous arguments listed, might as well... So without further ado:

Games/Resources In Other Languages
This section is reserved for links which leads to site which are exclusively in a language other than English for our non-native-English speakers. Whenever I can identify the language in question, it will be added in parenthesis next to the post. (Note: those links may or may not be mostly French as I am French-Canadian. If you know other great games or resources in other languages, do not hesitate to propose them, either in this thread, by PMing me here, or DMing me on Discord.)

I've slacked down a bit in the past few months, but I've started transferring links from my old thread to here again.
May 23, 2021 9:25 pm
I've been slacking up again with migrating my old thread's links here, sorry about that... But on the upside, I've found many new links, a lot of them provided by the community.
May 29, 2021 1:26 pm
I have to drop a link for alexandria.dk

Alexandria is an online library for role-playing games, board games, LARPs and the connected scene, primarily in Denmark and other Nordic countries. The library contains information for more than 9,000 scenarios, 400 board games, 4,000 persons and 1,000 gaming conventions. The project has existed since 2003.

Alexandria's purpose is to preserve information about the history of the gaming scene and communities. Furthermore Alexandria stores scenarios for every author who wants to share their scenarios. With the consent of the authors we currently have more than 1,500 scenarios available for immediate download.

Alexandria's data is gathered from public sources, dusty old programmes, role-players with exceptional memory as well as support and help from a huge amount of volunteers. We are not perfect - we might have a few errors and missing information, and we depend on the collective memory from the community - you can also help us with corrections.

Scenarios for download may be run under private circumstances. If you want to run the scenario at a convention or for commercial purposes and the scenario lacks information about this kind of usage you must contact the author for permission.

Thanks @ runekyndig. I've added it to the list.

Alright, all of my old thread has finally been finished to be transferred here. Next stop, some list of other stuff I found in the meantime...
Jan 5, 2022 2:05 am
It occurs to me that there are already some threads here on GP which can be useful. Gathering a link to each one of them here might help new users more easily find them. So perhaps this warrant an entirely new section...

GP's Very Own
This thread will be dedicated in bringing together all the existing GP threads which might hold some sort of resource which can be of help for GMs and players alike. They are all gathered here for convenience's sake.

Map-sharing thread.

Public Repository of Dice Highlight Codes.

Shared GM Sheets.

The Many Faces Of...

Character Image Sharing Thread (Fantasy).

Character Image Sharing Thread (Modern).

Character Image Sharing Thread (Sci-Fi).

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I haven forgotten about this project, I update it from time to time when I find new stuff (for example, I just found this site...).
Dec 8, 2023 9:01 pm
Just a heads up, I'm still working on this list. My last finds have been a couple of rules-light mix of D&D and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.
Aug 8, 2024 11:49 pm
Just want to let you know I am still working on this list, updating it regularly. For example, I recently found a few fan-made Fallout games, added some online generators, and corrected a dead link to a French game.
Sep 8, 2024 6:22 pm
Okay, first, I've noticed that my "A little bit of everything section" is starting to get very bloated. I might have to break it down in to new sections to lighten the load a bit. I'm thinking "Blogs", "Paper Minis", and "Bestiaries". Those 3 new sections should remove a good portion of the bloat.

Second, I'll be a bearer of bad news. The Internet Archive are currently badly losing 2 copyright lawsuits that I'm aware of. This means the Internet Archive is very much in danger of disappearing forever. This means a lot of broken links I've fixed using the Way Back Machine are most likely going to become dead again, permanently. I'm not aware if there are any way to save the Internet Archive at that point, I'll try to look into that, but given how much copyright lawsuits can go for, I doubt our paltry donations might do much to help...

Finally, speaking of dead links, I've noticed a few more. I'll fix those when I feel up to it (probably around the time I'll create the 3 new sections, remember I'm still dealing with some problems of my own which is sapping a lot of my morale and energy at the moment).

So yeah, this is pretty much the news regarding the state of this thread.

Never a media conservation site without a constant threat of a lawsuit, is there? D:

Since I saw some art programs on your list, have a contribution: Krita! It's a free open source art program which is quite delightful, and has both vector and raster capabilities, as well as a lot of built-in brushes and useful functions.

Also, take care of yourself! Sending good vibes for a morale boost. :P

My first new section to help un-bloat the "A little bit of everything" section.

Blogs
"Hey Bart, you remember blogs right? Well, they're back, but in pog form!" Yep, those blogs are still a thing, and you can find a whole lot of goodies on many of them... This entry will be for blogs and blog-like sites.

Sham's Grog & Blog. Resources and ideas for old-school games.

EdOWar's Blog. Resources for many games.

A Rust Monster Ate My Sword. Blog with a bunch of goodies.

Earthdawn Blod. Lots of goodies for Earthdawn.

Kamikaze's "What's wrong with AD&D?" page. Scroll further down for free alternatives to the world's most popular role playing game.

Abstruse Decapod's Free Tabletop Resources.

Some tips about solo gaming.

Some idea for dungeon generation.

Zadmar's Savage Stuff. Free games and resources (mostly for Savage Worlds).

Campaigns Playable. A blog with resources for O/AD&D.

Free downloads for NOD.

Yet Another Traveller Blog. Full of goodies for Traveller.

Boxes Full Of Boxes. Blog with some interesting stuff on it.

Crossplanes. Blog with resources for many systems.

Goblin Punch, a NSFW-ish blog (crude language and some risqué pictures) full of resources for OSRs.

Graeme Davis' blog, full of resources and freebies.

Cavegirl's Game Stuff. A variety of resources for a variety of games.

In Search Of Treasures. A blog full of goodies for Old School Essentials.

Helpful NPCs. A blog with some goodies for D&D5.

Slyflourish's blog. Some good articles for the lazy DM, as well as a few downloadable and generators in the DM Tools section.

A blog where you can download several games. The reason I haven't put it in the free game section is that some games are in English while others are in Spanish (so that sort of covers 2 categories...). All seem to be for solo play though... Edit: Oh, there's also a generator for Vampire: the Masquerade, so there you go...

Conselho das Estrelas. Despite the name, this blog in English has a few resources, about half of those for OSE.

Luke Gearing's Blog. It also has a bunch of downloads, such as Wolves upon the coast.

Elf Maids & Octopi, a spicy (read NSFW: the title is literally a reference to hentai) blog for OSR content.

D4 caltrops, another blog full of OSR content.

Roll 1d12. As the title entails, this blog is full of random d12 tables for your rpgs.

Coins and Scrolls. Another blog full of OSR goodies.

The Ideocron of the Oracular Somnanbulist. Quite the mouthful...

The Pastel Dungeon. More goodies for OSR.

We're talking about blogs here and I forgot the obvious, the Break!! RPG blog.

Crooked Staff Publishing's blog where you'll find stuff for 3D papercraft dungeons, some maps, and goodies for The Age of Shadow.

1Shot Adventures. Full of adventures, VTT assets, and character sheets.

Leicester's Ramble. This blog seems to mostly specialize in d66 tables...

Alone in the Labyrinth. A blog that seems to specialize in random tables and random generators.

Rise Up Comus. Various tips for your games.

Behind the Helm. A new blog, not too much stuff on it at the moment, but it'll grow in time...

Path Peculiars. A blog all about mapping and cartography in your RPGs. I posted it here instead of the Maps section because the blog section is a bit anemic in comparison...
