Part 1: Goblin Arrows

Severus and Queen head off into the grass to find a deer carcass. After spending a significant amount of time searching the nearby area, they come up with no other evidence of an attack taking place. This actually seems somewhat remarkable as most predators of game tend to leave at least some of their prey behind. Bones… fur… some of the less desirable offal and unsanitary contents of their entrails. It would seem sensible that remnants of the game animal would have been found nearby.

Osvando meanwhile scours another area for anything that would pair well with the dinner he's looking forward to this evening. His initial search for berries or something growing on nearby brush and shrubbery proves fruitless. He then casts his eyes downward, hoping to find some mushrooms. This also winds up being a wasted endeavor, mid-summer not exactly being as mycologically bountiful as the rainier spring months. He’s about to head back to the group when he spots what appears to be a dark spot in the grass some distance ahead, approximately 75 or 100 meters from the wagon. As he approaches it he sees not only a patch of dried blood similar to what Severus and Quinny discovered closer to the wagon, but also a number of footprints on the ground. The prints appear to have one pad impression in the rear, and two facing the front, suggesting its owner or owners have three toes, one rear facing.

"Damn, that is strange. No tracks, no more blood. Queen, let's get back to the Wagon. Dried jerky ain't so bad, eh?"

Severus starts to stomp off back to the High Road, his Javellin now held limply in his hand.

Osvaldo looks at the tracks and eyes in what direction they head out to, and if any of the tracks have headed toward the party's cart.
OOC:
Can I tell how old the tracks are and what animal or creature they belong to?
Jul 31, 2020 1:15 am
The tracks appear to Osvaldo be about as recent as the blood, so probably less than 24hrs. There are a number of tracks in this area, a small clearing in the grass, but Osvaldo doesn't see where they come from or go to.

"True, chasing after that which we can't catch will just make me hungry plus stress is bad for the skin."

Following Severus's suggestion, Quinny returns to the wagon as well.

As the others return to the wagon, Alstaer eagerly looks up from the fire that he's in the middle of starting. "Any success? What did you find?"
Jul 31, 2020 1:38 pm
Osvaldo heads back to camp and lets the others know about the blood and tracks. With a glint in his eye, "Shall we go check it out?"

Mathias nods, shifting his weapon belt, "Fresh cooked meat beats rations any day!"

Alstaer looks at his fellow guards leaving and looks nervously around, "W-w-wait up, I don’t want to stay behind! What about you Madame?", he looks at Quinny

The party spends a significant amount of the rest of the afternoon making a concerted effort searching the tallgrass for the animal. During the search you all examine first the blood patch Severus and Queen found. Again, here there is only the blood and some fur, along with some cloven-hooved tracks. No tracks or prints seem to have been left by an attacker or predator. Later you all examine the blood patch Osvaldo found some distance of about 100 meters away from the first. Comparatively, this patch is somewhat smaller and has less blood than the previous one, but there is more fur scattered, and it's evident that multiple bipedal individuals were in this spot. The tracks they left indicate that they had three toes on each foot, with two facing forward and one facing to the rear. Most of the fur in this area is coarse and of a tan or light brown hue, while some some of it is finer and white colored. Between the fur samples and the cloven hoof prints of the first, it is pretty easy to surmise the blood came from that of a deer, an antelope, or some animal of that variety.

Nevertheless, the animal never turns up and you begin to conclude it's not anywhere nearby. It's shortly after 6pm when you give up your search and return to the wagon, which you've kept within sight during your search. You've covered thirty miles today, at a brisk pace, under a warm sun. You're all getting hungry and tired, especially so for those who walked beside the wagon all afternoon. Having no luck at searching for fresh game, or even berries and mushrooms, it may be time to concede defeat, eat a ration, and get ready for a good night's rest, knowing that the party should be ready to head out again with the sunrise tomorrow.

"No luck with meat." Quinny sighs. She sets up her bed roll and sat on it.

"I wonder what those tracks are." Quinny took out her rations for the day. As much as she dislikes dried food, she's got no choice but to eat.

"You can all rest after dinner, I'll take first watch." She imposed.

I appreciate the Perception check for your watch rolls. Although you can turn in earlier if you wish, let's assume you begin drifting off to sleep around 10pm-ish or so, which is not far after sunset on this mid-summer season. You need at least 6 hours of sleep to avoid fatigue the next day. How long does each party member wish to stand watch?
Aug 1, 2020 6:59 pm
"I'll take third. Let's say two hours each, unless you all want to rest longer? Personally, I'd like to move on as soon as we can" Osvaldo states.

"I’ll take fourth...", the idea of keeping watch isn’t comforting for Alstaer, the pressure of doing a good job and keeping the group safe is making the magic stir within him.

Everyone turns in by around 10pm and Quinny takes first watch. At midnight she wakes up Mathias and turns in. Mathias stands watch until about 2am and is relieved by Osvaldo, who lets Alstaer take over at 4. Severus enjoys a full night of uninterrupted sleep, but everyone wakes up feeling sufficiently rested. The night goes without hitch, but Osvando spent his two hours with an uneasy feeling of being watched, though as carefully as he scanned the area, nothing materialized, and he returned to his bedroll assuming his nerves were just on edge, or that he was being a bit jumpy. Waking up at 6am and no mention of similar feelings by his companions, he feels a bit silly.

The temperature drops as the night goes on, and the stars and moon above become obscured by dense cloud cover. About halfway through Alstear’s watch a chilly breeze blows through your camp, and as you gather your gear together and the sun begins to rise to the east beginning your second day’s journey, in sharp contrast to yesterday’s hot still weather, thick gray clouds finally make their way over the Sword Mountains, blowing a cold, 40°F (4°C) wind from the southeast and accompanied by light rain.

You press on at a fast pace again, wiping rainfall out of your eyes, those walking beside the wagon stamping through mud and muck. Somewhere around 9am you arrive at the "T" that is the Triboar Trail, running east, and you head down it. To your left, on the north side of the trail, the land is all light green and golden tallgrass plains. To you right is more of the same, but twenty or thirty miles south are the Sword Mountains. On both sides of the trail dense woods occasionally break the monotony of the plains landscape.

"Hey, Osvaldo, give me a hand-up" Severus climbs onto the wagon besides the Ranger, "Miserable day" he says, surveying the land around the party for any sign of unwanted interest in their journey.

"So, what's your story, brother? What brought you to Neverwinter and the life of an errant adventurer? You have the face of a man who knows adversity" Severus smiles disarmingly.

It’s sometime around 11am and you’ve been on the Triboar Trail for a couple of hours when Severus joins Osvaldo on the wagon and begins to engage the man in some small talk. But suddenly, before the ranger can reply, the wagon comes around a bend and stops short as the party looks upon two dead horses sprawled about 50’ in front of you blocking the path. Each carcass has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.
