Part 1: Goblin Arrows

Jul 26, 2020 8:05 pm
This Quick Reference Sheet can be used to assist players with Movement, Actions, Bonus Actions, Reactions, Conditions, and Environmental Effects.

The adventure begins for five hopeful adventurers:
Mathias Endren, a human fighter and grizzled old soldier traumatized by a disastrous past encounter with a dragon.
Quinny Dorah, a female half-orc barbarian with a dual personality as that of a con-man named "King".
Alstaer, a half-elf sorcerer with a streak of untamed wild magic. Every spell he casts comes with the potential to blow up on his face... literally.
Severus, a human barbarian wielding a battleaxe and a double-bladed scimitar.
Osvaldo Leafbash, a human ranger who also comes with the scarred past of an ex-soldier. He brings a dark past to the party as well, though his is with orcs and goblins.
Your adventure begins in the city of Neverwinter where each of you has been lurking recently in hopes of drumming up some work of the nature that "adventuring types" generally seek. This work usually provides opportunities to gain experience, earn vast fortunes, and enjoy fame as great heroes. Unfortunately such opportunities rarely fall right into one’s lap for no reason, and each of you have spent a considerable amount of time watching your gold reserves slowly deplete themselves in Neverwinter’s local inns, taverns, and other places where work of this nature is sought out by wannabe heroes.

As things begin looking dire for you, you find a moment of possible reprieve when you are approached by a Dwarven businessman named Gundren Rockseeker. Some of you may know Gundren as a friend of a friend. Some may know of him as a passing associate. Some may merely (and possibly most likely) have enjoyed a horn or two of ale with the dwarf while frequenting the taverns of Neverwinter looking for work. Regardless of how you know the man, Gundren knows each of you well enough to know that you may be desperate for a bit of coin, and he seems to think you may have the skill-sets relevant to a job he needs done. And so each of you are approached one afternoon by the dwarf as you sit in a tavern.

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/sword-coast-adventurers/images/b/b9/Gundren_Rockseeker.png/revision/latest?cb=20190702125628

As the dwarf excitedly begins his pitch, he explains that he has need of some well-armed men and women capable of escorting a wagon of supplies from Neverwinter to a small town a few days’ journey to the southeast, called Phandalin. In the course of his discussion with each of you he makes mention that he and his two brothers have discovered "something big" near Phandalin, but says no more on the matter even if pressed. He explains that he has no reason to believe that you or your new companions will have any trouble with delivering the supplies, but that his need for an armed escort to attend it lies merely in the fact that Phandalin has developed a reputation as a bit of a rough-and-tumble frontier town since its resettlement, and he would not be happy to see his supplies purloined by bandits just as they are about to arrive in the village. He then explains that he has no intention of traveling with you, but will set out immediately this night by horse, riding hard and fast and escorted by a warrior named Sildar Hallwinter, as he has business in Phandalin that needs attending to at once. For your efforts though, despite the likelihood that your travels will be uneventful, Gundren will have payment waiting for you at a sum of 10 gold pieces each once the supply wagon has been delivered to a trading post in Phandalin called "Barthen’s Provisions". Confident that he’s succeeded in securing your sword for this task he explains that you should be ready to leave at first light the next morning and that he will have the wagon loaded and ready at his office in the morning, which he then gives you directions to. He then leaves to attend to his own affairs.

Each of you beats the rooster the next morning, waking up well before dawn. You gather your gear and leave the inns you’ve been staying at, more or less arriving at Gundren’s office at the same time. As you look at your new companions, you think you recognise them as others who have been prowling the taverns in search of adventure. Waiting for you is a stringy-looking man standing next to a wagon already attached to two oxen placidly chewing mouthfuls of cud. The wagon is loaded with a bulky cache of supplies, covered with a heavy canvas tarp tied tightly over its contents. The man, who introduces himself as "Sourmash", hands you a map, and explains that the way to Phandalin is to take The High Road south for about thirty or thirty-five miles until you come to a smaller road heading east called Triboar Trail. Follow the Triboar Trail for about twenty miles and then turn south again and the road will take you to Philandin after about ten miles or so. Sourmash then hands the reigns over, explaining that one or two people will need to drive the oxen while the rest walk alongside keeping alert for any signs of trouble or ambush. The High Road itself is pretty well-traveled, and the likelihood of trouble is low. But the closer you get to Philandin, the further you are from civilization, and the more likely you may be hit by bandits and other sorts of unsavoriness and trouble.

OOC:
This isn't exactly the sort of adventure you were hoping for when you set out on this path, but you're all, if not excited, at least relieved to have some work and a bit of coin promised at the end. Your spirits lifted a bit, you'll all start out with a nit of INPSIRATION.

Your characters have all likely seen each other hanging around the inns and taverns while looking for work or an adventure party to join, but may not know one another much more than that. If you would like to take a moment to have your characters introduce themselves to the others, please do.

The roads and trails you will be traveling are pretty well maintained and you should be able to cover about twenty-four miles a day, if you choose to travel at a normal pace. If you wish to move at a more cautious pace you can slow down to a speed that covers about eighteen miles a day. And if you want to throw caution to the wind and get to your destination more quickly you could cover about thirty miles a day. The wagon requires at least one person sit atop and drive the oxen, though it can seat two persons if you choose to have two drivers. The rest of you will accompany the wagon on foot. Who wishes to drive, and who wishes to travel on foot.

Enter, the Queen.

A little bit leaner than the usual muscular half-orc she stands 5'10" with an air of confidence and arrogance around her as she stare down all other adventurers with him. She brushes up her short white hair with her hand then starts her introduction.

"I'm Quinny Dorah, call me Queen." She smirks as she check on the adventuring party with her eyes.

To the right of the cart walks Mathias, more comfortable on his feet than resting in a cart

Broad and athletic despite his years, Mathias is well kept as usual, his beard and hair groomed to near perfection, as was his habit during his days as a serviceman. Humming a marching tune to himself and subconsciously keeping time with his march, he offers a slight nod, pausing his tune.

"Mathias," he smiles warmly, "It's a pleasure to meet you, and to be working with you."

A tall, wiry, athletic human walks past the others to the cart, and gets on top the passenger seat, drawing out his bow. His face covered by his hood, you hear an older voice emanate "I'll keep watch for any miscreants along the way.
I say we hurry at a quick clip. The name's Osvaldo by the way.

A slim, average height male half-elf dressed in fine clothes walks next to the cart. He beams at his fellow travelers, "I'm not great with animals, so I'm perfectly fine walking. The name is Alstaer, glad to meet you all". He nervously fidgets with a wooden figure in his necklace that appears to be a small, carved eagle.
Jul 27, 2020 6:50 pm
"I’ll walk, too"
Severus stands at 6 feet and four inches, his hair dark and unkempt, his icy blue eyes blazing with madness. For a big, brutish looking man, his tone is unexpectedly sonorous.
"Nice to meet you too, Alstaer. And you Osvaldo. Mathias, the pleasure is mine. Oh, and my Queen..."
Severus bows his head and lifting it again, a broad smile sweeps across his face exposing his yellow teeth, one of which is missing.
The barbarian’s sleeveless skin jerkin leaves his large arms bare upon which can be seen triskelion tattoos and blue woad that has resisted attempts to wash it off

Introductions are exchanged and Osvaldo is the only member of the newly-formed party to climb aboard the wagon. Seeing as everyone stands around the wagon below, Sourmash shrugs and hands the reigns to the Ranger. "Not much to it really," he tells Osvaldo. "These here oxen have been workin' this wagon a long time. Give the reins a little snap and they move along forward. Snap a couple more times to get them to pick up the pace. Pull back on the reigns and they slow and stop. They get a pretty good feel for who's holding the leathers, so if you drop the reins or nobody's holding them the oxen won't move.
Should be decent weather today. Bit warm maybe, but I don't expect you'll run into any storms. Good luck."
With that, the man slinks away with all the grace of a stray dog.

It's around 6am as you leave Neverwinter. The sun is just rising over the forested landscape to the east. Since Osvaldo has control of the oxen and none of his companions solicited any input as to the pace the group wanted to keep, Osvaldo decides to push it a bit. The miles tick by, with the Sword Coast and the Trackless Sea beyond always keeping five to ten miles off to your right. To your left, fifteen to twenty miles over open rolling plains you watch the dense forests of the Neverwinter Woods scroll by. As Sourmash predicted, the day runs a bit on the toasty side; probably in the mid-eighties for those that know Fahrenheit, or around thirty degrees for any Celsius folk. It might have felt a bit more comfortable had any sort of breeze complimented the mid-summer day, but the afternoon remains windless, the air still, and not a cloud graces in the blue sky above. Eventually those walking next to the wagon start feeling a bit sweaty in their armor, and relief comes to all on foot when around mid-afternoon (around 2pm) you bring the oxen to a halt. You estimate that you've traveled somewhere around thirty miles over the course of about eight hours. Continuing on for the day is possible, but you'd be pushing the animals who are already breathing heavy and drooling hard in an attempt to regulate their body temperature.
OOC:
You party covered about thirty miles on the first day, in 8 hours of traveling. On the map above, you party is somewhere around the word "Road" on "The High Road". You can continue to press forward, covering about 4 miles for every hour at your current pace, but become subject to Forced March rules (pg. 181; PHB). For every hour you continue you will need to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 10+1 per extra hour of marching) with failure resulting in 1 level of exhaustion per failed roll. Or you can make camp for the rest of the day, get some rest, and set out again at sunrise the next morning.
Jul 27, 2020 9:20 pm
"We've made excellent time. What say we give these poor beasts some respite? A march halts it's progress rather quickly when the draft animals die on the road."

Mathias moves forward to a slight rise just feet off the road and looks to his surroundings, covering his eyes with a weathered hand. Despite Sourmash's assurances, he's never been one to blindly trust his own luck, particularly so far into the countryside.

"What say you all?" Mathias calls over his shoulder, "Is this a fair place for a rest?"
Jul 28, 2020 1:04 am
"I do need my beauty rest so thank you for being... considerate Mathias." Queen says as she climb down the wagon to check out the spot where they were camping at. As much as she wanted to get to their destination as fast as possible, the Queen knows that she wouldn't want to pull a cart herself.

"Dearie, I'm not used to camping out but if you tell me what to do, I'd love to assist." Queen tells the group.

Queen wants to use Help Action to anyone who want to do Survival check.

Severus begins examining the ground around the cart and party looking for tracks of game.

Alstaer wipes the sweat from his brow, he clearly hadn't thought the whole "walking next to a wagon for an entire day's travel" bit through. He feels exhausted and is very happy at the notion of resting for the night. "Ah yes...I mean...we could go on...but...ah, this is such a lovely spot, let's just rest here for the night". Alstaer looks around, he struggles to remember having been this far out of Neverwinter before. The calmness of the countryside suits him, the magical energy inside of him is bubbling far under the surface and he seems to be in control for once. "I'll collect a bit of wood and start a fire perhaps?".
Jul 28, 2020 2:38 pm
Mathias nods, "Allow me to accompany you, friend. It's dangerous to go alone, so they say."

Resting his shield against a tree and depositing his pack next to it, he adjusts his weapon sling which rests across his back, loosening the blade slightly in case of danger.
OOC:
While Alstaer checks for firewood, Mathias would like to keep an eye on his surroundings, perhaps with Perception. Don't wanna be ambushed!

Mathias stands a moment and looks at the area around him. The day continues to be hot though resting seems to help a bit. As Mathias keeps an eye on his surroundings, skeptical that Sourmash’s weather forecast will hold, he is the first to notice dark clouds approaching from the South. They press themselves over the Sword Mountains, struggling to break over the top of the crescent-shaped range, but they look bloated with precipitation. Tomorrow's weather foretells to be more turbulent than that of today’s journey.
therecusant says:
Severus begins examining the ground around the cart and party looking for tracks of game.
Severus inspects the area with the aid of Queen. They find random animal prints, which seem to belong to birds and other fowl, and some tracks probably belonging larger game animals. None of them seem recent or indicate that they might be nearby. As they’re about to give up their search they find a rather large patch of tallgrass covered in blood, dried and already turned a shade of brown. Accompanying this is a small bit of white and tan fur, appearing to be that of maybe a deer or some other narrow-hooved ruminant. Not predatory animal prints or sign of struggle mar the soil otherwise, but Severus and Quinny estimate that the blood might be no more than a day or so old.

Sassafras says:
"I'll collect a bit of wood and start a fire perhaps?".
It doesn’t take much effort for Alstaer to collect a sufficient amount of firewood as only about fifty meters from The High Road, off to the group’s east, is a small stand of birch trees. Not only does the half-elf find a good pile of deadwood lying about, but he remembers having learned that the natural oils in birch bark are highly flammable, making for an excellent firestarter even when damp. In only about ten minutes he has a few good size chunks of papery bark in hand and enough wood to last the night if the party wishes.

"Look, Queen", Severus plucks the fur from the blood-stained tall-grass and offers it to her. "Might have ourselves a handsome feast before sun-down. Maybe venison! Let's see if we can find the beast".

Severus traipses off into the tall-grass following the trail of blood, gripping his Javelin expectantly.

Alstaer nervously smiles at Matthias as he picks up another branch, "I just...I needed to get away from Neverwinter, it's not a very happy place for me, and I thought that getting adventuring work would be the best way to go about that while making a bit of coin. How about you?"
Jul 29, 2020 1:50 pm
A shadow seems to flit across the warrior's face. He shakes himself slightly, "Much like yourself I'm afraid. Not a happy place..."

After a moment's pause, "But! It feels good to be out on my feet again. I look forward to seeing what the frontier will bring us!"

Jul 30, 2020 1:30 am
Severus and Queen head off into the grass to find a deer carcass. After spending a significant amount of time searching the nearby area, they come up with no other evidence of an attack taking place. This actually seems somewhat remarkable as most predators of game tend to leave at least some of their prey behind. Bones… fur… some of the less desirable offal and unsanitary contents of their entrails. It would seem sensible that remnants of the game animal would have been found nearby.

Osvando meanwhile scours another area for anything that would pair well with the dinner he's looking forward to this evening. His initial search for berries or something growing on nearby brush and shrubbery proves fruitless. He then casts his eyes downward, hoping to find some mushrooms. This also winds up being a wasted endeavor, mid-summer not exactly being as mycologically bountiful as the rainier spring months. He’s about to head back to the group when he spots what appears to be a dark spot in the grass some distance ahead, approximately 75 or 100 meters from the wagon. As he approaches it he sees not only a patch of dried blood similar to what Severus and Quinny discovered closer to the wagon, but also a number of footprints on the ground. The prints appear to have one pad impression in the rear, and two facing the front, suggesting its owner or owners have three toes, one rear facing.

The tracks appear to Osvaldo be about as recent as the blood, so probably less than 24hrs. There are a number of tracks in this area, a small clearing in the grass, but Osvaldo doesn't see where they come from or go to.
Jul 31, 2020 7:16 am
"True, chasing after that which we can't catch will just make me hungry plus stress is bad for the skin."

Following Severus's suggestion, Quinny returns to the wagon as well.

Jul 31, 2020 8:44 pm
The party spends a significant amount of the rest of the afternoon making a concerted effort searching the tallgrass for the animal. During the search you all examine first the blood patch Severus and Queen found. Again, here there is only the blood and some fur, along with some cloven-hooved tracks. No tracks or prints seem to have been left by an attacker or predator. Later you all examine the blood patch Osvaldo found some distance of about 100 meters away from the first. Comparatively, this patch is somewhat smaller and has less blood than the previous one, but there is more fur scattered, and it's evident that multiple bipedal individuals were in this spot. The tracks they left indicate that they had three toes on each foot, with two facing forward and one facing to the rear. Most of the fur in this area is coarse and of a tan or light brown hue, while some some of it is finer and white colored. Between the fur samples and the cloven hoof prints of the first, it is pretty easy to surmise the blood came from that of a deer, an antelope, or some animal of that variety.

Nevertheless, the animal never turns up and you begin to conclude it's not anywhere nearby. It's shortly after 6pm when you give up your search and return to the wagon, which you've kept within sight during your search. You've covered thirty miles today, at a brisk pace, under a warm sun. You're all getting hungry and tired, especially so for those who walked beside the wagon all afternoon. Having no luck at searching for fresh game, or even berries and mushrooms, it may be time to concede defeat, eat a ration, and get ready for a good night's rest, knowing that the party should be ready to head out again with the sunrise tomorrow.
Aug 1, 2020 5:12 am
"No luck with meat." Quinny sighs. She sets up her bed roll and sat on it.

"I wonder what those tracks are." Quinny took out her rations for the day. As much as she dislikes dried food, she's got no choice but to eat.

"You can all rest after dinner, I'll take first watch." She imposed.

I guess 4 watches takes us to the morning. I'll take a watch tonight
Aug 2, 2020 8:12 pm
Everyone turns in by around 10pm and Quinny takes first watch. At midnight she wakes up Mathias and turns in. Mathias stands watch until about 2am and is relieved by Osvaldo, who lets Alstaer take over at 4. Severus enjoys a full night of uninterrupted sleep, but everyone wakes up feeling sufficiently rested. The night goes without hitch, but Osvando spent his two hours with an uneasy feeling of being watched, though as carefully as he scanned the area, nothing materialized, and he returned to his bedroll assuming his nerves were just on edge, or that he was being a bit jumpy. Waking up at 6am and no mention of similar feelings by his companions, he feels a bit silly.

The temperature drops as the night goes on, and the stars and moon above become obscured by dense cloud cover. About halfway through Alstear’s watch a chilly breeze blows through your camp, and as you gather your gear together and the sun begins to rise to the east beginning your second day’s journey, in sharp contrast to yesterday’s hot still weather, thick gray clouds finally make their way over the Sword Mountains, blowing a cold, 40°F (4°C) wind from the southeast and accompanied by light rain.

You press on at a fast pace again, wiping rainfall out of your eyes, those walking beside the wagon stamping through mud and muck. Somewhere around 9am you arrive at the "T" that is the Triboar Trail, running east, and you head down it. To your left, on the north side of the trail, the land is all light green and golden tallgrass plains. To you right is more of the same, but twenty or thirty miles south are the Sword Mountains. On both sides of the trail dense woods occasionally break the monotony of the plains landscape.

It’s sometime around 11am and you’ve been on the Triboar Trail for a couple of hours when Severus joins Osvaldo on the wagon and begins to engage the man in some small talk. But suddenly, before the ranger can reply, the wagon comes around a bend and stops short as the party looks upon two dead horses sprawled about 50’ in front of you blocking the path. Each carcass has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Alstaer is walking along the wagon feeling downright miserable. Why did he choose to leaver Neverwinter to begin with? "Since everyone there hates or fears you, idiot". The thought only works to make him more miserable but it’s soon replaced by the horror of the dead bodies and the sudden urge to scream. Knowing that he would instantly lose the respect of his companions he instead chooses to avert his eyes and concentrate on looking around for a potential source of the arrows.

Osvaldo readies his bow, nocking an arrow. He points at the dead horses, and gives a side glance to Severus, the glint back in his eyes, "That's why". He then scans the woods to find if he sees anything, and takes a quick look at the black arrows, to gather if they belong to a particular group.

Quinny prepares her whip as she stride forward to get a closer look at the dead horses. She attempts to investigate whether this is something they should worry about or not. Was it an ambush or is it a trap? She asks herself as she decides from a distance whether it is safe to approach the dead horses or not.

"They dare block my path with these filthy corpses." She says as she fold her arms.

"Cover me", Severus says to Osvaldo as he leaps off the wagon and wearily approaches the corpse on the right of their path. The barbarian jogs his lance in his hand to find its centre of balance, readying it to find its path to any assailant waiting to pounce upon them.

Being about 75ft away, the carcasses are too far away for Osvaldo to make an investigation check on the arrows, and all that can be determined from this distance is that they have black feathers, so Osvaldo takes a moment to scan the wooded area nearby for any trouble.

Quinny begins approaching the horses warily, planning on keeping a distance for the time being.

Severus takes no such cautions, except to tell Osvaldo to cover him with his bow, and then begins to walk directly towards the right horse. Neither Quinny nor Severus advance more than five or ten feet forward, though, when suddenly a brief movement catches the ranger’s keen eye from the nearby trees. A goblin carrying a bow sits in the foliage on the left side of the road. As Osvaldo quickly scans the area, his deft eyes pick out three more waiting in ambush. Four in total, one on each side of the road carry shortbows, while the other two hold scimitars at the ready.

https://i.imgur.com/bzSVO58.png

They watch the party carefully as Severus is about to walk into a trap, but suddenly the first goblin Osvalso spotted locks eyes with the ranger. "Khlacks!!!" the goblin spits angrily, and it doesn’t take a speaker of the goblin language to recognise a curse word from the tone. "Kherek-nor!" he barks, and all four goblins give away their concealment in preparation for attack.
OOC:
The goblin’s stealth roll beat everyone’s Passive Perception score, but their ambush ( a surprise round for them) was thwarted by Osvaldo’s excellent Perception savings roll. At this point combat will begin in earnest. A few things to note before we begin this encounter:

1. "This Quick Reference Sheet is an excellent aid to use when you want to know movement rates, what sort of things you can do as an action, a bonus action, or a reaction, etc. It basically helps you know what you can do on your turn. I’ll be adding it to the first post of this thread as well, in case you ever need it.

2. All goblins have both a shortbow and a scimitar. Goblin #1 and Goblin #4 are the only two who currently have shortbows drawn.

3. All PCs can move 30’ per round unless they choose to use their Action to double that movement. Each square on the map is 5’, so you can essentially move up to 6 squares for your normal movement per turn. Moving to a diagonal space still counts as only a 5’ movement as well (PHB; pg. 192), but you can’t move diagonally through a building corner or other obstruction. For the sake of clarity for all players moving their PCs on their turn should use the letter/number coordinates to explain where you move your token to. For example if Severus moves forward, his player could say, "I move Severus to J10 and attack with my battleaxe". If Severus’ player simply says "I move forward", and I haven’t been given a specific square to move him, I’m going to use my best judgement, but it might not be the specific spot the player was intending and it could cause complications for the party later. So the more specific you are by using the grid coordinates, the less you leave fate in the DM’s hands.

4. Mathias had a Readied Action declared specifically for this purpose. He didn’t declare which weapon he had readied beforehand, so next time please be more specific what weapon you have ready. In this case, I’ll allow you to choose your crossbow or your battle axe. Note that all PCs have a move of 30’, and the nearest goblin is Goblin #4 who is 40’ away.

5. For the sake of expediency I’ll go ahead and roll for initiative for each member of the party, as well as for the goblins (one roll covers all four of them). Then Mathias may use his readied Action or disregard it if his player so chooses, and then we’ll begin with Round 1 of combat in order of highest-to-lowest Initiative roll. For simplicity, if a PC and NPC tie, the PC will go first.
Inititative order for this encounter is as follows:
1. Osvaldo
2. Alstaer
3. Goblins
4. Quinny

OOC:
Yeah that's a good point. For the sake of keeping the game moving along, whenever you make a To Hit roll for your PC, go ahead and roll for damage as well. If your character misses their to-hit roll, the damage roll will just be ignored. If you forget to post a damage roll, I'll do it for you to move things along.
Osvaldo draws his bow back and lets an arrow at the shortbow wielding goblin to the right of the trail. Despite the fact that the goblin had ½ cover of trees between him and his attacker, the ranger’s arrow finds its mark and the arrow hits home in the creature’s throat. It staggers a moment, wounded quite badly from the shot, and then falls flat on its face dead.
OOC:
Remember that you add the same Ability Modifier you used on your to-hit roll to your Damage Roll. So in your case, Osvaldo’s damage with a longbow is 1d8+3.
Alstaer fires off a firebolt. Normally the oxen in front of him would block his shot, or at least give his target ¾ coverage, but because the goblin’s are standing atop a 10’ embankment the flame sails over the backs of the oven, causing the animals to stamp and jostle a moment in fear, but the firebolt sails high, singeing the bark of a tree trunk above and behind the goblin’s head.

The goblins then take their turn.
Goblin 1 steps out of the foliage and fires an arrow at Mathias at close range (meaning he attacks with advantage. He draws his arrow back and lets it loose, and it strikes Mathias with a painful punch to the stomach, doig 7HP of damage and doubling the man over for a moment.
[color="green"]CORRECTION: Please see this post, as the damage to Mathias has been retconned.
Goblin 1 steps out of the foliage and fires an arrow at Mathias at close range. He draws his arrow back and lets it loose but having rushed the shot, the arrows notch slips the bowstring and it clatters impotently to the ground at the goblin's feet.

Goblin 2 jumps down from the embankment and takes cover behind one of the dead horses. He is at 3/4 cover, because of their small size, and any attack against him while behind cover gives him a +5 to his AC. As a free action he stows his shortsword in its scabbard, and as his Action he draws his shortbow.
Goblin 3 does the exact same thing, taking cover behind the horse to the right of the trail. He also is at ¾ cover, and uses his turn to stow his sword and draw his bow.
OOC:
Remember, you can draw or stow a weapon as a free Action, but to do both requires you use your Action)
Quinny attempts a menacing demeanor, but as they’re already engaged in combat, they don’t seem susceptible to intimidation methods short of reducing their numbers and showing them thee error of their ways through bloodshed. She uses her Action to Dodge any incoming attacks before her next turn.

Mathias continues to advance on the goblin attackers despite taking an arrow to the stomach, finding himself now in the midst of their numbers and in danger of being attacked by all three next turn.
OOC:
This is probably not the ideal place for Mathias to be, having taken 7HP damage already, but I have to go with what you post for your PC.
OOC:
It is now Severus’s turn, to conclude Round 1. Once Severus goes, we will start Round 2.

Severus dashes into the wood intending to flank the Goblin assailants, readying his battleaxe as he does so.

Actually, before you finalize this, please give me a moment to post Round 2. I messed up in Round 1, and as a result Mathias should have taken no damage. I'll explain this mistake in more detail in today's post, which should be uploaded in the next 60 minutes or so. After you've read today's post feel free to reconsider your choice for Mathias's turn.
Aug 8, 2020 5:11 pm
OOC:
First and foremost, I need to apologise. In Round 1, I had made an error regarding missile weapon ranges and coinciding attack rolls. Ranged weapons in 5e have 2 numbers, separated by a "/". The first number is normal range, and the second number is long range. I operated under the misunderstanding that firing at a distance under normal range gives the attacker Advantage, and firing at a distance between normal and long was a regular To Hit roll. This is incorrect. Firing at a distance up to the normal range is a normal roll, and firing at a distance between the normal and long range limit is at Disadvantage. Because of that, Goblin 1’s attack on Mathias should not have been at Advantage simply for being within the normal range limits. I should only have made 1 To Hit roll, which would have been the first roll. As this roll was a "1", the result should have been automatic failure. For this reason, the damage done to Mathias will be retconned and he remains currently at full health.
Round 2 begins!
Seeing another goblin erupt from the trees, ready to fire down on Mathias from the embankment, Osvaldo lets off another shot with his longbow. A second arrow finds the exposed throat of a goblin, and with a wet gurgle its legs collapse under it and it wetly gasps out its dying breaths as the conflict resumes around it.
OOC:
Alstaer has the next turn in Initiative order, followed by the goblins, then Quinny’s post will be recognised. I will give @AOC1996 the opportunity to revise their post, due to my mistake in Round 1, though if you still wish for Mathias to use his battleaxe attack on Goblin 2 (R8) and want to keep the "17" To Hit roll, I will allow it.
Aug 8, 2020 7:06 pm
OOC:
I'll keep my actions, minus the use of Second Wind! Thank you!

If Goblin 1 is still standing I’ll go for him again, otherwise I guess one of the ones in cover

Alstaer sees Osvaldo drop the goblin he had his eye on. He decides instead to throw another firebolt at one of the remaining two goblins; a nearly impossible shot to make as they are both well concealed behind the dead horses. Their cover was unnecessary against the sorcerer’s cantrip as the bolt barely covers half the distance between Alstaer and his target before hitting the dirt uselessly.

The two remaining goblins make their attack…
Seeing that he is being rushed by Mathias, Goblin 2 attempts to fire an arrow at the advancing soldier. This shot hits this time, striking Mathias in the belly for 8HP of Damage.
Goblin 3 decides that the ranger is the biggest threat to their ambush right now and attempts to try and trade arrow for arrow with Osvaldo. The arrow barely hits Osvaldo, glancing off his legs, but does 4HP of damage. He then sprints from behind the dead horse he was using as cover, climbs the embankment, and attempts to hide in the foliage he dives into, but he fails to penetrate the woods deep enough and he remains seen by the party.

Quinny slowly advances forward, and remains standing out in the open on the trail.

Despite the painful arrow embedded in his stomach, Mathias advances around the side of the dead horse and raises his battleaxe. With a heavy downward cut he slams the blate into the goblins chest, sinking it deep. The goblin groans and blood spurts from its lips, and it sneers menacingly at the fighter standing over him. It’s badly wounded but not dead.

OOC:
In 5e, Initiative rolls are made at the beginning of the encounter, and turn order remains the same every round of the encounter.
You do not re-roll Initiative every turn.

That being said, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you don't post your PCs action until your turn is up. This is especially true if your PCs turn comes after the enemy's turn. If you post that your character is moving to a specific space and attacking a specific target, and the enemy's turn comes before yours and they move to a different space on the battlemap, you've basically moved your token to an empty space and forfeited your action for the round. If you post out of turn, and your posting becomes obsolete by the time your PC's turn comes up in the round, you forfeit your turn. As the DM, there's is no guarantee I'm going to leave a monster standing in a specific place simply because someone declared out of turn that they were going to attack that monster when their PC's turn eventually comes up later in Initiative order.

At this point we're still resolving Severus's actions for Round 2. I'm going to assume that this is going to be Quinny's Action when her turn comes up in Round 3. I appreciate the enthusiasm and I'm going to allow it this time, but from here on out I'm going to insist that players don't post their PC's actions until I declare a new round has begun, and I strongly recommend you wait until your PC's turn is actually up or risk your post turning obsolete as circumstances change.

[ooc/]Alright my apologies, Mallow, you are correct. I understand now what happened there. Quinny’s attack is in fact successful. The critical hit applies. According to the Player’s Handbook (PHB, Pg. 196) the whip damage is normally 1d4 + Ability Modifier (Strength in this case, which is +2 for Quinny). Proficiency bonuses do not apply to weapon damage. On Critical Hits, such as in this case, you roll your weapon’s damage twice, and then add your ability modifier. So Quinny’s normal whip damage is 1d4+2. On a critical hit it’s 2d4+2. In this case it would be (3)+(4)+2, for a total of 9. She then does an extra +2 damage for Barbarian Rage (PHB, pg 47), and 1d4 (4) additional Weapon Damage for Savage Attack (PHB, pg. 41). Quinny does a total of 15 damage for this attack.

So going back to Round 2...[/ooc]

Quinny approaches the goblin battling with Mathias and sends the end of her whip sailing over the horse’s carcass. Despite the goblin being nearly entirely hidden behind the dead animal’s body, the whip smashes into the goblin’s skull with an explosive snap, smashing bits of skull into shrapnel, as pieces hit her companions standing on both sides of the creature. The goblin falls to the ground, more or less lacking a recognizable head.

OOC:
NOW Round 3 begins!
Osvaldo takes aim at the final goblin, who is making his way for the cover of the woods and fires, and this time his arrow misses its mark.

Alstaer also takes aim at the goblin, and sends another fireball sailing well off into the foliage, hopefully to gutter out before setting the woods on fire.

The Goblin sends an arrow down on the raging half-orc who just destroyed its companion’s skull with her whip, hitting her in the ribs for 5 HP Damage. He then attempts to dash into the woods hoping to hide himself in the dense foliage, however the moving trees and brush gives general location away.

Quinny rushes drops her whip on the ground and rushes at the goblin. After scrambling up the side of the embankment she sends her hand-axe at her enemy. Had they still been on the road the throw would likely have split her target’s skull down the middle, but sailing through the woods as it is, the hurling blade crashes through dense overgrowth and barely misses its mark, and barehanded as she is now, Quinny realizes she’s going to have to find that damn axe somewhere in there later.

Mathias doubles over, teeth gritted at the the arrow embedded in his stomach. The wound isn’t necessarily going to kill him outright, but the pain is crippling.

Severus rushes up the embankment and charges through the brush, grabbing hold of the goblin with outstretched arms, he catches him just in time, and holds tight. The goblin squirms momentarily in a feeble attempt at escape, but feeling the constricting strength of Barbarian Rage smothering the life from his lungs, the goblin concedes that he has no hope of escaping the grip of his captor and goes limp.

"Ugggn!...", Glarkvak squirms a moment in Severus's arms before coming out with it in bad Common. "Was in lair minding own business eating rabbit few days ago when runner comes from King Grol. He give note to Boss Klarg! Note say someone called 'Black Spider' paying King Grol to watch for dwarf on Triboar Road. King Grol castle farther away and our lair closest to road and King Grol tell Klarg what to do, so King Grol send note to Klarg saying what to do at us. Then Klarg make Gorkus read him note out loud because he best reader, and then Klarg say to us, 'Let's go look for Dwarf on road, then catch dwarf and bring him and his stuff back to King Grol!'
"Then yesterday nightish we catched the dwarf and Klarg taked him and his map to King Grol. Dwarf had friend on road with him so some of us taked his friend to Eating Cave."

Gundren! Sildar! Has to be

Severus' thought process is swift, if not so very rigorous.

Map? Map!

"Right, my little Klargling, where is this Eating Cave? Who is King Grol and where do we find his castle?"

Severus pulls Glarvak's face so close to his own that the goblin cannot focus on both maddened eyes of the barbarian at one time. But as the goblin's gaze flits from one eye to the other, in each he sees rivers of blood racing through the icy blue pools.

Osvaldo will draw the horse and carriage up closer to where his companions are, hop off, and head towards the captured goblin. As he gets closer, he pulls his hood down, and you can see what looks to be a hard, leather mask, covering his forehead and cutting across diagonally atop the bridge of his nose, wrapping over the right side of his face, including the right eye. Osvaldo draws his short sword, grabs the goblin's chin, and forcefully points it towards his face, "Remember me? Best to answer my companion's questions. As much of a bane as I am to your kind, a raging barbarian will grind your bones to dust with just his fingers. Where is the Eating Cave? And who is King Grol and where do we find his castle?"

Before the state of rage could subside, Quinny treats her wounds. Personally, she wanted the axe to decapitate the goblin's head but it seem Severus wanted to interrogate the pest.

"I'd rather not talk with these uglies." She says.

Quinny picks up her whip and looks for her thrown axe.

Alstaer keeps himself in the background as his companions interrogate the goblin. He's breathing deeply as he tries to control his pulse and the swirls of magical energy roiling within him as it always does whenever he feeds into it and lets it out. Besides, while he himself can be a persuasive guy, he isn't the most intimidating one and it looks like his colleagues has this handled just fine.

Osvando approaches the goblin and reveals his masked face. Whether the goblin recognizes the ranger, simply fears the man’s appearance, or finds himself in a bigger bind than he can handle with Severus lurking nearby as well, the goblin realizes that complete submission to Osvaldo’s demands may be the only way to save its cowardly life.

He looks between Osvaldo and Severus when he speaks. "King Grol is leader of Cragmaw Tribe. Is told King Grol is large mean bugbear. I never see because he at Cragmaw Castle. Is long way to Cragmaw Castle. Must walk a long day or more to get there... Into the Forest. The dwarf was tooked there." The goblin points to the northeast, at the dense woods of the Neverwinter Forest, a distance of at least twenty miles from the Triboar Trail.
"King Grol never say anything about dwarf friend, so we keep dwarf friend for selfs. He was tooked to the Eating Cave at Cragmaw Hideout, where I am living. Eating Cave is for… ehh…" The goblin wrings his hand uncomfortably. "Is for eating...
"Cragmaw Hideout closer than Cragmaw Castle. Is why King Grol telled Klarg we to be catching dwarf... Because we closest of Cragmaw Tribe to road. Is only about five miles on hidden trail."
Glarkvak points to the north across the road.
"Is how we catch travelers and taked their things… And sometimes taked them to Eating Cave…"

While Grarkvak is spilling his guts to Osvaldo and Severus, Quinny searches the woods for her axe. She has an idea of where she threw it, and the general idea of where it probably would have landed, but the trees are so dense and uniform-looking it takes her a long while. She’s about to give the axe up for gone when her foot kicks something hard, and looking down sheets sees the handle, it’s blade embedded slightly in the base of a tree slightly larger than a sapling.

Aug 14, 2020 12:57 pm
Looking at Severus, "Aye, I agree. Sildar, then Gundren. As for this one," he places the tip of his short sword against the goblin's neck "I think it's provided all the information it can."

Ballpark, about fifteen miles further. You continue east on the Triboar Trail for about five more miles, and then take a road headed south for ten miles.

Hearing Guinny’s statement, the goblin begins panicking, "Wait! Wait, is not safe! Is dangerous path to road we maked. Cragmaw goblins not stupid! Path has many traps! Only Glarkvak know safe way to hideout! You kill Glarkvak now and you must find traps by selfs. Very hard to find. I take you, and then you let me live after, yes?"

"yes", Severus responds to Glarkvak and immediatly turns his gaze to Osvaldo.

"I implied I'd let him live if he cooperated. I'm sorry about that, I should have asked you and the others first. But what he says is right. With him dead, how would we know whether the directions or any part of the story were correct? And there is much still to be learned - how many strong is this eating place? What is it's layout? I can see you bear a great animosity for his kind, but I'm asking you to put that to one side for now, for the sake of Sildar and Gundren. What do you say, comrade?"

Severus looks intently at the proud Ranger.

Osvaldo's grip tightens on the handle of the short sword. The urge to plunge his sword into the goblin's neck is strong. They're all conniving and cowardly, and the moment you turn your back will gleefully backstab it. The only good goblin is a dead goblin. Still...he knows Severus is right, and Sildar and Gundren need rescuing. Slowly, the twinkle in his eyes fades, and his grip on the sword releases. He looks at Severus and nods, then back at Glarkvak "Fine, but we tie it's hands behind it's back, and stuff it's mouth to keep it quiet. You make a single wrong move, I'm going to plunge this sword straight through your neck."

Quinny prepares herself for the next few miles they will need to venture in order to rescue the dwarf.

Osvaldo collects the only arrow that can be salvaged from the battle as Severus ties the goblin up.

"Is through there. Through trees is small trail." Glarkvak nods to the north side of the road. It occurs to you all that neither the wagon, nor the oxen pulling it, will be able to get up the incline on the side of the road much less be through the dense foliage of the woods.
Aug 15, 2020 11:43 pm
"We should leave the wagon and oxen here for now. We can circle back later to pick it up." Osvaldo has grown somewhat attached to the oxen, since learning to pilot the wagon. He picks some grass from the surrounding area and feeds them, before tying their hitch to a nearby tree. He scratches behind their ears, and leans in close, whispering a quick prayer to Mielikki, goddess of forests "Take care of Frank and Nancy for me, M."

After tying the oxen off and feeding them, the small goblin leads you through the woods. After fifteen or twenty feet you come out into a small clearing where you see a small, single-track trail running to the northwest with dense brush running along each side of the trail. You can tell immediately that you won't be able to walk side-by-side here, and will have to continue on in single file.

Aug 17, 2020 3:22 pm
The goblin begins leading you along this single track trail, Severus taking the lead, followed by Osvaldo, Quinny, and Alstaer bringing up the rear. Being forewarned by Glarkvak that the trail is loaded with traps, you all have your eyes searching warily in front of you. After about ten minutes of hiking, even before the goblin can point it out, Severus spots an area which looks slightly "off". Leaves cover the ground, but in a density far thicker than they have scattered naturally on the trail for the last ten minutes. Had you no idea that traps may be abound, you may have missed it, but being on the alert for inconsistencies made this spot conspicuous. Sure enough, a moment after Severus notices the patch, Grarkvak says, "No stepping here. Is for catching you up and keeping you."

Looking closer, Severus sees a line of rope running from under the leaves, through the nearby trees, and tied to a large, tensely bent branch overhead.
Aug 17, 2020 7:41 pm
"Alstaer, Queen? You hear that? This is a trap right here", Severus points towards the patch of leaves. "Be careful"
OOC:
Assume Osvaldo would have heard Glarkvak at least
Aug 18, 2020 9:44 am
"Thanks for th heads up. We'll be careful."

Quinny nods as he heed Severus's advice to avoid the trap laid out by the goblins. It may not be the last of the traps they have and Glarkvak may betray them anytime, Quinny decides that it is best to be more vigilant. She'd help out the others spot traps as well.
Aug 18, 2020 12:47 pm
Alstaer very nervously skirts around the trap, "Thanks for the warning". He clutches his wooden necklace and follows the rest closely as they proceed
Aug 18, 2020 1:36 pm
"Good looking out Severus. Everyone keep a sharp eye out. I don't trust this goblin."

His bow hand tightens, as Osvaldo will focus more on looking for traps.
Aug 18, 2020 4:31 pm
You continue down the path for another ten minutes or so with very little of note to see, both sides of the trail being flanked by dense foliage, when ahead you see the trail veer off to the left. As you approach the bend, Glarkvak suddenly appears to stumble and trip, nearly falling over. But rather than hit the ground he tears off in a dead sprint ahead, hoping to catch Severus by surprise and tear the rope lead from the barbarian's grip.
Instead, the line draws out and runs out of slack, and as it snaps tight in Severus's hand, the goblin's feet fly out from under it and Glarkvak hits the ground with a heavy thud, giving out a hard wheeze as he knocks the wind out of himself. He lays on the dirt catching his breath, his attempt at escape an utter failure.

Aug 19, 2020 3:45 am
Osvaldo, annoyed at himself for losing focus on the goblin when he should've known better, grits his teeth, and calmly states, "Severus, would you be ever so kind as to bash one of Glarkvak's kneecaps for me? Make sure he can't run away again."
Aug 19, 2020 10:50 am
"W-w-w-wait, he still needs to walk, right? Otherwise he'll slow us down". Alstaer is clearly not comfortable with this amount of violence.
Aug 19, 2020 10:57 am
"Ok, Glarkvak. Alstaer has saved your kneecap for now, but I can't carry on upsetting my friend Osvaldo. This is your last chance. No more tricks. And as we start walking again, you start talking, we want to know everything about the Eating Place - how many goblins there are, how the place is laid out, whose in charge, where our friend is, what you eat for breakfast, what time you go to bed - everything! Severus grits his teeth and holds the goblin by the throat as he delivers the ultimatum.

Sorry today's post is a bit late. I'm re-shingling my roof, and so I won't get to log in until evenings for the next few days.
The goblin nods in agreement and says, "Is up here. Was only showing you up here!" and points ahead. As you move along you turn the bend and Glarkvak says, Was only checking trap. Is trap here! Is hole with leaves and twigs. You fall and hurt self.
You walk this side!"
He immediately moves to the right side of the trail. Now that he's pointed it out, you notice the foliage and detritus on this part of the trail looks a bit "off", but it's much better concealed than the first trap, and with Severus now distracted with watching your captive, and Quinny watching but having to see around Severus and Glarkvak, your group likely wouldn't have noticed it.

After passing the pit trap, you continue on. Glarkvark answers Severus's questions as you walk. "Is usually ten, or ten pulse five, or ten plus ten gobins at Eating Cave. Only is maybe ten now because some leaved to take Dwarf to Cragmaw Castle…
"Hideout is cave in hill…
"Is in-charged by Klarg. Is boss of Cragmaw hideout. Has sayed this already...
"Don’t know where friend is. Is in Den maybe…
"We eats many things for breakfast. Is having rabbit sometimes. Is having roots sometimes. Is having… friends sometimes…
"Sleeps when tired unless on patrol or not tired. Or watching…"

While you’re walking you notice that while he answers all of Severus’s questions, he intersperses his answers with other unsolicited information. He discusses the names of plants you pass, birds you hear, most of these names in goblin. He tells of meaningless gossip that has occurred in the hideout, which means nothing to you, and generally stays talking as Severus instructed. You notice that as you continue on Glarvak gets more talkative and noisier as you go, but the next four miles go on without any further traps being pointed out. Presumably there are a few set up near the trail to discourage anyone from following them early, should anyone give pursuit, and finally Glarkvak points ahead. "Is there!" Ahead you see a hill. The woods stand back from its base as if afraid to approach too closely, and the mouth of a cave open to darkness beyond, spewing forth a small stream of water.

Glarkvak's face betrays a brief look of surprise as Osvaldo's weapon pierces through his neck. As blood runs onto the blade in a heavy flow the goblin gives a few muted gurgles and hate fills the eyes looking back at the ranger until the light finally dies within them and he slumps to the ground.

Severus begins looking around, hoping to find some sort of cover to hide behind in case the goblin has given their position away. His frantic search proves fruitless, and just as he spots some dense bushes across the stream and to the west of the party which might be suitable, he watches as two arrows fly out overhead from them, aimed at your group.
One arrow sails just past Severus’s face, embedding in the grass near the body of Glarkvak. The second one takes Osvaldo in the torso as he admires his handiwork on their dead captive doing a devastating 7HP Damage. The ranger, having been hit with an arrow already back at the road ambush is in bad shape with 1HP remaining.

Through the brush ahead, you see the well-obscured forms of two goblin guards.

Alstaer moves behind some bushes. They aren't quite as dense as the copse the goblins are shooting from, but do they provide some coverage. He then fires a bolt of fire at one of the obscured figures, and for once he finally hits his mark. He hears a brief squawk of pain and sees mad flapping of what’s probably a hand or an arm as if a burned sleeve was being put out. It seems the Sorcerer is finally finding his accuracy at least…
OOC:
Alstaer has ½ coverage behind this section of brush, giving himself a +2 bonus to his AC.
Severus charges across the open field at the copse of brush the goblins are taking cover behind. He plunges into the shallow stream, and despite the water only reaching somewhere between the barbarian’s knees or thighs, the footing beneath the water’s surface is made of tumbled stones which roll underfoot and are covered with a slick layer of algae, making the crossing more treacherous than at first glance. Severus makes it across and dives into the dense brush hoping to close the distance to the goblin attackers, but the twigs and foliage wrap around his limbs, further adding to the difficult terrain. The goblins seem to have chosen this spot for a guard-post wisely.
OOC:
Severus is only able to push through to M19 due to the difficult terrain.
Quinny dashes across the field, also intending to plunge in after the goblins to engage in melee. As she reaches the stream, she makes a leap, throwing herself across the water.

OOC:
The leftmost Quinny token (at K17) is where Quinny is jumping from. She has moved a distance of 45ft on easy terrain. The next three quinny tokens to the right, which are at about 50% opacity) are possible landing spots based on the fact that Quinny can make a running long jump of 14ft . Normally each of those spaces are difficult terrain which would halve your movement (L17 is sketchy footing in the stream, M17 and N17 is dense foliage which grabs and trips you up), but since you’re jumping through the air, the terrain penalty doesn’t apply until you’re back on the ground and moving again. So you can choose to have Quinny land at any of the three locations, but as each are difficult terrain, she’ll need to make a Dexterity check at DC10 or fall prone. Just let me know which spot Quinny lands on before your next turn and go ahead and make your Dexterity roll to land on your feet.

Osvaldo staggers to the copse of brush near Alstaer, in pain, and takes a moment to take a second wind, regaining 5 temporary Hit Points. Deeper in the brush than the sorcerer, he has ¾ coverage, giving himself a +5 bonus to his AC.

Meanwhile the goblins hear the crashing of the barbarians approaching them at an alarming rate.
Goblin 1 panics and rushes out from his cover, presses through the stream, and fires an arrow at Severus’s back (Severus has +2 to his AC for ½ coverage at the edge of the brush). Severus hears the arrow slice into the brush to his left, missing by a foot or two.

Goblin 2 fires his bow at Quinny who has a +5 bonus to her AC for ¾ coverage. The arrow sails way off the mark, and the goblin suddenly dashes into the brush to Quinny’s right and disappears from view.

Sorry for the two-day delay. It was my weekend and I spent the last two days up on my roof re-shingling it from pretty much 6am sunrise to 9pm sunset, and by nightfall I'd just have a late dinner and a quick shower before crawling into bed to get some sleep.
Alstaer finally hits his stride with his Fire Bolt cantrip, hitting the goblin for the second time. This time the bolt hits the small humanoid directly in the back of the head and the goblin goes down face first with a thump.

The other goblin lies somewhere in the brush, hidden from view for the time being.

Osvaldo will move along the nearby wall, hidden in the brush as he does, towards the cave entrance (stopping at I13, I'm assuming moving diagonally is allowed, but if not, I'll readjust), to see if any other goblin's have been alerted.
Sep 8, 2020 4:06 am
OOC:
Yes, in 5e, moving to a diagonal space is regarded as a regular 5' move. They traded hyper realism for more streamlined play. There's options in the DM Guide for more realistic movement, but I'm happy keeping things streamlined. I'm away from my computer right now, but will have a response for Osvaldo's turn in the morning.
Sep 8, 2020 10:49 pm
Osvaldo moves to I13, skirting along the edge of the copse of bushes next to him before plunging back into them to enjoy 3/4 cover.

Suddenly, no more than ten feet from where severus stands in the thick bushes, the twang of a bow sounds, followed immediately by a "crack" sound, and an arrow aimed directly for the barbarian’s face is deflected by a small branch only a foot or so in front of Severus’s forehead. The arrow sails by Severus’s head so closely he can feel the wisp of air the feathers theve in their wake as it sails past his left temple, and broken branches pepper his face.
Immediately following this, small footsteps are heard retreating deeper away from the advancing barbarian, and as your eyes track the sound you see the goblin through the foliage just as it squats down in an effort to hide from you again.
OOC:
The 3/4 cover Severus is in has saved him from taking a particularly nasty hit from the goblin's arrow.
OOC:
Round 2 ends, and Round 3 begins. The goblin's hide attempt failed this time, but he is still taking advantage of 3/4 from the bushes he's in. Turn order is as follows:

Really feeling his oats now, the young sorcerer lets loose another Fire Bolt cantrip. The ball of flame races across the open grass, over the stream burbling forth from the cave's mouth, and into the dense foliage of the bushes, searing leaves and incinerating trigs, before hitting the goblin square in the chest with a direct hit. You all hear a grunt as the watchkeeper hits the ground dead. You wait a moment to see if any further movement comes from the bushes, but all is quiet.

Osvaldo hears the grunt of the dead goblin. He takes a moment to make sure there are no others, then slowly heads toward the group. Despite being severely injured he manages to keep his composure. He looks down at the arrow sticking out of his stomach, blood dripping to the ground, "Does anyone have any healing?"
Sep 13, 2020 5:05 pm
OOC:
For the record, I don't believe anyone has any healing spells in this party. There's always the option of taking a short rest, since I don't recall Osvaldo doing that yet. Taking a short rest will allow you to heal 1 Hit Die of damage. If you've already used up your Hit Dice on short rests, you may have to take a long rest and get some Hit Dice back.

Osvaldo draws the arrow from his abdomen. Luckily the arrowheads fashioned by these goblins are rather small and made for piercing, rather than slicing, and their technological level seems to indicate they haven't quite grasped the concept of putting a barb on the heads, which would do more damage upon extraction. If truth be told, these arrows seem almost like target arrows than those one would normally use for hunting or warfare, and going slowly and carefully, paying close attention to his pain thresholds, he draws the arrow out without further injury. The wound bleeds, and Osvaldo is still in bad shape, but a short rest may help him recover.
OOC:
What are Severus and Alstaer doing now that the immediate threat of goblins has been taken care of?

Having seen that Quinny's injuries are not too severe, Severus walks over to Osavaldo and watches him pull the Goblin arrow from his stomach. Severus offers the Ranger his waterskin and says, "here, clean the wound. We need to rest awhile so you can regain some strength."

Severus reflects on where the party's been. The party got an early start on the day earlier this morning, setting out around 6am. At about 11am you encountered the dead horses and the ambush that followed. Squelching the ambush only took a couple of minutes, and then you were lead by your goblin hostage about five miles through dense single-track trail, taking care to avoid traps, which took a very slow three hours. There was a short skirmish that lasted less than a minute with the two goblin guards. Guessing from your sense of time passed and confirmed by the sun overhead, you'd guess that it's pretty close to about 2 in the afternoon, give or take fifteen minutes.

"Friends, lets rest so Osvaldo and Quinny can recuperate. Alstaer, you have the vision of an Elf, right? We can move out again as the sun falls and hopefully take the Goblin camp unawares. What say you all?"

As you decide to take a breather and let those suffering injuries mend a bit, you notice Quinny hasn't reappeared yet. The last any of you saw of her she had bounded into the copse of bushes somewhere near where Severus had. But in the density of the foliage and the heat of battle, you lost sight of her.
OOC:
@therescuant: It's mid-summer in the northern hemisphere, so the sun sets pretty late this time of year. Around 9pm, or a little after.

Sep 18, 2020 5:00 pm
OOC:
Osvaldo, if you would like to use this short rest to heal back some Hit Points, go ahead and make a roll according to your Hit Die.

@Everyone: To regain Hit Points during a Short Rest, a PC needs to take 10 minutes actively resting. The player may then roll as many Hit Dice as they wish, not to exceed the total unused Hit Dice the PC has based on their level, and add the result to the PC's current Hit Points. Remember to add your Constitution Modifier to your Hit Dice roll when adding Hit Points to you current total! Once your Hit Die has been used up, it is gone until the PC takes a Long Rest (a period of 8 hours "resting" with at least 6 hours spent actually sleeping). Hit Dice are then replaced at a rate of 1/2 (round up) the used-up Hit Dice per long rest. All PCs start with 1 Hit Die at Level 1, and gain another Hit Die at each level earned. Your Hit Die depends on your class. Rangers' Hit Dice are d10s. Barbarians' Hit Dice are d12. Rogues' Hit Dice are d8, and d6 for Sorcerers. When using Hit Dice to gain current Hit Points during a short rest you do not have to declare how many Hit Dice you want to roll ahead pf time. You can roll 1 Hit Die at a time and stop when you're satisfied with the number of Hit Points you've gained back. You may never exceed your Maximum Hit Points when using Short Rests to regain Hit Points.

For example, Severus is a Level 3 Barbarian. He will have 3d12 Hit Dice to pull from when he needs to regain Hit Points after combat.
After a particularly ugly encounter with a Bugbear he takes 15HP damage, and after combat is over he decides he needs to take a short rest and heal. While resting he rolls 1d12 and gets a "2", healing 4 Hit Points ("2" plus his Con Modifier pf +2) and now has 2d12 left in his pool. Not satisfied with that he uses another of his Hit Dice, rolling an "11" (=2 Con Modifier =13). This actually takes him to a total of 17HP healed, but may not exceed his Maximum Hit Points so Severus is fully healed, and the extra 2 Hit Points are just scratched and ignored. Severus still has 1d12 Hit Dice to pull from in the future if he needs another short rest. Later that evening the party tales a Long Rest, and Severus gets half (rounded up) his used Hit Dice back. Since he used 2 Hit Dice, he will get 1 back, and will start his day with a total of 2d12 Hit Dice to use.

Let me know if you have any questions on how healing while resting works.
Severus begins shouting out for Quinny, moving through the bushes and bracken. Long minutes go by, and in the meantime the barbarian passes the dead goblin guards, though there isn't a trace of the party's companion. It's unclear if she's been captured, if she's turn tail and run during combat, or if she's injured and unable to respond. She's simply gone.

As you're resting and searching for your companion, you hear the unmistakable sounds of barking dogs coming from somewhere inside the cave entrance.

OOC:
@ctme2000: Ah, okay... Good catch. So I had you losing 4 HP in the first ambush on this post, and another 7HP damage during the surprise round against the goblin guards in this post. That left Osvaldo with 1HP left. Having healed back 12HP with your Tireless Feat, you should now have 13HP (1 temporary HP). Is that what you have as well?
Sep 19, 2020 10:04 pm
The temp hit points are their own pool, separate from class HP. So I healed back to my full hit points, 12, with the short rest, and still have the temp 5 HP as a buffer that gets depleted first.
Sep 20, 2020 5:29 pm
OOC:
@ctme2000: I'm not following where the 5 temp Hit Points come from. You had 1HP, and healed 10+2 HP using the Tireless Feat. Can you explain the extra temps for me? I'm not arguing your wrong or anything; I just would like some clarification real quick so I can be a better DM. I don't see anything in the PHB or the UA revision.
Sep 21, 2020 1:03 am
OOC:
@DM, Hey, no worries. My understanding of the PHB rules is that the temp HP are separate from hit die HP. So I was down to 1 HP and used the Tireless ability. This gave me a separate pool of 5 HP, not effecting/adding to my hit die HP. So once combat ended, I had 1 HP left + 5 temp HP. I rolled for short rest and got a 12 total which went to my hit die HP. So now I'm at 12 HP + 5 temp HP. Going forward in combat, the 5 temp HP will be used first. Once the temp HP is depleted, damage starts effecting my regular HP.

Also, just a shout out to your excellent DM'ing. I've only played in a few PbPs, but you are by far one of the most consistent and thorough ones, and it's been a pleasure playing with you. Keep up the great work!

"Aye, tis a bit lunatic, this whole venture." Osvaldo agrees, as he gets his bow ready and slowly proceeds toward the cave entrance. He looks around the entrance floor, checking for any foot/paw prints he might recognize, and if there are any lights inside the cave.
Oct 2, 2020 3:50 am
Severus and Osvaldo move toward the cave's entrance and peer inside. Just inside the cave mouth, a few uneven stone steps lead up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage. The cave narrows to a steep fissure at the far end, and is filled with the stench of animals. Savage snarls and the sounds of rattling chains greet your ears where three wolves are chained up just inside the opening. Each wolf's chain leads to an iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite. In the back of the eastern room you make out what appears to be a man, though it's hard to make out much more than that.

@ctme2000: I don't think a coup de grace would be possible against these wolves. They are vicious and hungry wish to attack anything they can get at. Attempting to engage in melee will result in a like response from them, though ranged attacks certainly have some benefit at the moment.
Severus attempts to buy the complacency of the hungry wolves with some strips of dried meats. As he extends his hand out toward the first animal all three lunge for the barbarian, snapping at his hands, less concerned with the small piece of dried meat offered as they are with the fresh meat offering it.

Osvaldo's second shot is devastating, driving the arrow right through the wolf's chest as it snaps at Severus. It barks a final yelp before collapsing dead.

Severus meanwhile swings his Greataxe at the final wolf and drive the blade into the side of the wolf. It falls back a moment before getting ready to lunge at the barbarian.

Osvaldo and Severus prepare to attack the wolf again, but before they can, Yewin steps forward with a dagger in each hand and dispatches the final beast. It too falls with a Yelp, and the three are left standing awkwardly inside this cave room with three dead wolves before them.
Oct 9, 2020 9:02 pm
Osvaldo looks at the stranger, his bow now aimed at him instead, "We appreciate the assist, but who are you? How did you get here?"
Oct 13, 2020 9:44 am
Straightening to stand at his full, modest height, Bug causally wipes the daggers clean and stows them away again. "You can call me Bug. Most everyone does. I was on my way with some others as an escort heading towards Phandalin. We hadn't made it too far when a group of goblins ambushed us. Most of the others were killed in the attack. I guess they were saving me to be a snack for later." Bug looks up past the two towards the exit. "I look forward to hearing who my fortuitous rescuers are, but first, should we get to a more pleasant location before anything else?"
Oct 13, 2020 10:15 am
Severus holsters his great axe on his back and strides towards Bug. "Well met, Bug. I'm Severus and my cautious friend here is Osvaldo. We too were hired as escorts. Turns out our employer has been captured by some creature known as the Black Spider. And we too have a friend who is being being kept in a larder somewhere near here. Perhaps there was no room for two of you. Anyway, nice work with them daggers. Seems to me we should team-up and take down this Goblin lair. What do you say?"

Severus holds his arm out towards Bug and then glances over his shoulder towards Osvaldo.

Osvaldo points the bow back toward the ground. "Ay, we could use your help against these goblins. Pluck them like you did the wolves and we'll be out of here in no time."

At that, he kneels and lays his hand on the closest wolf, saying a quick prayer to Silvanus, the god of wild nature, then gets back up. "We should get going, I'm sure the goblins know we're here. With us, Bug?"
Oct 15, 2020 12:13 am
Taking Severus's arm in return, Bug looks between him and Osvaldo and nods. "Well, if there are others still alive I can't just leave them to these creatures. You both seem like you can handle yourselves, so yeah, I'm in."

Tapping the tips of his fingers lightly on a dagger, a smile crosses his face. "And I suppose a bit of revenge would suit me very nicely."

Tightening his pack, he looks farther down the cave. "How do we want to proceed? Nice and quiet usually works for me, but I can be flexible in these situations."

Oct 15, 2020 12:27 am
OOC:
For Bug:
We have -

Osvaldo Leafbash, a human ranger [whom I won't presume to describe further for fear of the Ranger's arrows ;-)]

Severus, a human barbarian - Severus is tall (6' 4"), and stained with blue woad. His hair is dark, wild, thick, coarse and matted. He has yellow teeth, and is missing front incisors that make him look comical/demonical dependant upon your point of view.

OOC:
Bug is a gnome rogue. His clothes are not new by any means, and mostly a mixed assortment of items, all in black or dark brown leathers. Though none of it is very fancy, you can clearly tell that he takes care of his clothing and gear. He has a modest beard that looks intentionally cut short. His hair is slightly more wild, but is pulled back with a dark headband. The daggers he used are a matched set, long and thin with simple handles, but definitely the most quality items that can currently be seen on his person.
Oct 16, 2020 2:57 am
"I'm pretty sure we lost the element of surprise, but a stealthy route still works best. Severus, care to try your hand at such a sneaky endeavour?" A genuine grin spreads across Osvaldo's face.
Oct 17, 2020 9:34 pm
OOC:
It should be noted that this room is about as far into the cave as you can move unless you have some sort of light source or infravision, and even in this room the visibility is lousy.
Oct 18, 2020 7:55 pm
Osvaldo's grin collapses as he notices the lack of light further in the cave. "On second thought, Bug, would you be willing to scout ahead and do some reconnaissance for us? This lack of light is a nuisance but Severus and I can get torches ready in the meantime."
Oct 20, 2020 1:24 am
"That seems a fair enough plan to me. I'll see if anything is lurking around the corner, and report back before getting into anything."

He pulls his hood up and takes a step forward before turning back, a small smirk still across his face. "If I yell though, I wouldn't mind some backup. I don't plan on becoming anyone's meal today.

OOC:
For some reason, I though only rock gnomes had darkvision and have been describing events as if Bug would be as in the dark as the rest of the party. I should have added some other pertinent details for bug in this cave...
Bug is about to proceed further into the cave's north tunnel when he turns around to remind his new companions to come running of he calls for help and realizes something "off" about the rubble in the cave he's been kept prisoner in. Some of the debris on the ground is rocks and detritus from outside, but he also notices that along the east wall, much of the material on the ground is more rubbish than natural mineral, including what appears to be cooked animal bones, scraps of parchment, bits of rusty metal and threadbare cloth, and other refuse.
https://i.imgur.com/QGh70W0.png
Oct 22, 2020 1:18 am
Before heading further in, Bug hesitates and turns back to the others. "Before I go, turn one of those torches over to this corner. It must have slipped my mind in the scuffle, but I think I remember a strange pile behind where I was tied up that may be of some interest."
Oct 22, 2020 2:54 am
Osvaldo lights a torch, readying his short sword in the other hand, and heads toward the pile Bug mentioned.
Oct 24, 2020 4:59 pm
Looking at the pile of materials on the ground in better light, you see it is indeed rubbish. Noticing claw marks and scratches at the edge of the refuse pile, it appears the garbage had been picked at by the wolves at some point, though their chain leashes were too short to reach bug or the garbage before they died. The refuse appears to have been dropped into this room from somewhere above through a natural chimney-like fissure in the stone. The light from Osvaldo's torch reveals that the chimney ends after 30 feet above, though what room or passageway may be beyond is unknown. By the looks of it, it can be climbed easily enough using natural stone handholds (and a few successful Athletics checks) though it may take some time and if one were to fall from close to the top there would be a 30' fall to try and walk off afterward. Otherwise, there's still the tunnel heading north just outside of this room.
Oct 25, 2020 4:47 pm
Osvaldo explains to Bug and Severus what he saw. "Bug, think you can climb that and scope it out with your dark vision? If we get the drop on whoever's in here, or at least some recon, it would be advantageous."
Oct 27, 2020 9:58 am
Stepping over to peer up the chimney, Bug takes a moment to look over the stone, assessing as many good holds as he can before attempting a climb. "This could be useful, I doubt anyone expects something to come up this way."

Pulling a length of rope from his back, he situates it to be within easy reach on his back. "I'll poke my head up and see what's up there. If it's all clear, I'll drop a rope back down if I can find something sturdy enough to tie it to."

Once the start of his climb is planned, Bug starts up as quietly as possible.

Severus and Osvaldo watch as the gnome scurries up the chimney. Darkness seems to engulf him the higher he climbs, though Osvaldo's torch keeps him illuminated enough to observe. The gnome deftly ascends and after about 30 feet you see him come to a halt, evidently assessing the situation.

funfungiguy sent a note to kwil
"TOMORROW'S DINNER CLIMBS UP KLARG'S DIRTY-HOLE DOES HE!?!"

Whatever the agile gnome has found above, he's been spotted, and by something large it seems by the booming voice that shouts from above.
OOC:
Though no mention was made that Bug was climbing stealthily, I gave you the benefit of the doubt and rolled it for you. Unfortunately, the roll was a "2" and +5 for a total of "7". Not nearly enough to surpass any Passive Perception scores. If Bug would like to scurry back down the chimney beofre his attacker(s?) reach him, he'll have to make another Athletics (Strength) check with Disadvantage. Failure means a fall from a height of 1d3 x10 feet, taking 1d6 damage for each 10 foot increment when he fell. OR Kwil may have other plans, and opt not to climb down, so I didn't roll anything for you.

"By Gond! Bug’s been spotted"

Severus rushes to the stone chasm and peering into the darkness shouts: "Bug? Get down here. I’m here to break your fall"

Severus readies himself to catch a falling gnome from the gloom of the Goblin chimney.
Oct 27, 2020 7:53 pm
Osvaldo leaves the torch near the chimney entrance, so Bug can have some light scurrying down. He sheathes his sword, readies his bow, and hurries toward the inside of the wolves entrance, opposite from where the cave tunnel continues. He peers into the darkness, bow taut, ready to let loose at the first sight of an enemy.
Oct 28, 2020 10:23 am
Hearing the voice boom out as he approaches the top, Bug silently curses himself for being so careless in the climb. He immediately begins to reverse his climb, favoring speed over care, putting faith that he will be caught in case of a fall.

As Bug begins his descent, pebbles and debris fall down on his head from above as the wolf comes to a skidding halt at the edge of the hole. Its sapping teeth narrowly misses the gnome's face and hot slobber drips down on him from above. Below, Severus and Osvaldo both hear the barking of another wolf above, and as Bug climbs safely down and appears back in the room before you, the three of you hear the booming voice again:

"YOU TWO HALF-WITTEDS! GET YOUR FILTHY HIDES DOWN THAT DIRTY-HOLE AND PUT DOWN KLARG'S DINNER OR KLARG'LL BE HAVING YOU INSTEAD!!!"
Oct 30, 2020 11:12 pm
"Klarg! You hear that Osvaldo? Klarg. So this must be the eating cave, the Goblin Glarkvak mentioned."

Severus' momentarily glances towards the debris at his feet hoping that none of Sildar's bones are to be found there.
Oct 31, 2020 4:07 pm
Continuing to look down the tunnel, he thinks of the bones too. "Aye, loud and clear. Hopefully Sildar is still breathing." He continues to peer into the darkness, bow at the ready.
Nov 2, 2020 10:50 am
After planting his feet firmly back on the ground, Bug turns back towards the hole with daggers at the ready. With a puzzled look, he glances between Severus and Osvaldo, "Klarg? You two know that thing up there?"
Nov 3, 2020 2:52 am
"No, but we knew someone who did. Are his two underlings coming down the shaft?"
Nov 3, 2020 6:47 pm
Before Osvaldo can even finish his question with the proper punctuation mark, dirt and small pebbles begin raining down the chimney, along with the sounds of grunting and scratching from above. The scratches suddenly become a pronounced scraping and sliding noise, followed by a half-second of silence, and completed with the body of a goblin crashing to the stone floor upside down. It gives a grunt in tandem with a sickening crunch, and lays prone on the ground, eyes glazed over, neck bent at an unnatural angle.

A moment later a second goblin climbs down through the chimney. Without even looking in the party's direction yet, it looks down at the dead goblin at its feet and spits a goblin curse at the corpse while drawing his shortsword. It takes a step forward before looking up and immediately the goblin halts in its tracks, eyes growing big as saucers as they gaze back and forth between Bug, Severus, Osvaldo, and the dead wolves. If you could read a goblin's mind you'd guess it probably came down the chimney expecting Bug to be pinched between three hungry wolves and two goblins. Instead it finds itself the one trapped between three wolfslayer adventurers and an angry Klarg above.

You can see its wheels turning as it tries to consider how it's ging to get itself out of this mess, and its eyes quickly look back at the chimney.

Just as a light of confidence sparkes in his eyes and he readies for a counterstrike a giant axe cleaves his head from his shoulders and it rolls to Yewin's feet.

From above, you no longer hear the bellowing of the one called Klaarg, but the wolf continues to bark down the hole the Bug escapes through.

"Agreed." Osvaldo puts away his bow, and readies his short sword and a new torch. "If everyone's ready, let's go talk to Klarg."
Nov 17, 2020 3:19 am
Not enthusiastic about being the first one to have your face eaten off by the wolf barking in the chimney above, you all decide that heading north is the best option to find Klarg. You walk past the dead wolves and into the main cave system and head fifteen feet north or so.

The main passage from the cave mouth climbs steeply upward, the stream plunging and splashing down its west side. In the shadows, a side passage leads west across the other side of the stream. From this point on, characters without Darkvision will need light to see the surroundings.

Meanwhile Bug looks north. In the shadows of the ceiling to the north, he can just make out the dim shape of a rickety bridge of wood and rope crossing over the passage ahead of your party. Another passage intersects this one, twenty feet above the floor.

Severus flings off his backpack and rummages through it to recover his tinderbox and one his torches. He carefully lays down some dry cloth bathed in oil, and begins to strike flint against fire steel until the flashes of gold ignite the oil. Blowing gently upon the cloth to encourage the fire, Severus brings the torch to kiss the dancing flames and it roars into life, spreading light into the increasingly dark abyss.
Nov 18, 2020 12:27 pm

"Aye, agreed. Also, you know you didn't have to go through the whole tinderbox routine. I could've just used my torch flame to light yours. Think smarter, not harder, as my Pa used to say." with an amused smile on his face, he claps Severus's shoulder and continues on toward the bridge.

Now that you all have a source of light you can see more clearly. The bridge to the north is actually about twenty or so feet above you connecting two passageways that run perpendicular to the one you're in, but twenty feet in the air. Otherwise your options from the ground are a path to the left across the stream that climbs up, or the path going north, under the bridge and veers up and to the right.
Nov 24, 2020 4:13 pm
"Klarg is most likely up north and to the right, past the bridge. Bug, want to scout out that part? I can check the tunnel to the right of us, and meet back here in a few minutes?

As soon as the first of your party is nearly under the bridge you suddenly hear a harsh, gutteral barking command you know to be Ghukliak, the language spoken by goblinoid races, issued from above, where you now see a solitary goblin, once hidden in the shadows of the bridge, now standing before you with a number of javelins in hand. Bug tries to follow suit but stumbles on the leap across the stream landing in the water, but just as the whitewater floods into him his right hand finds purchase on a rock.

Bug reaches for purchase and just as his fingers grasp a stone the rushing water hits him like a four-horse wagon. The stone is torn from his shaky grasp and he goes ass-over-teakettle as Severus and Osvaldo watch him swept away to the passage below.

For probably a half-dozen seconds, that seem like a half-dozen terrible minutes, bug can't tell up from down and feel like he's being pulled apart from every direction while at he same time being pummeled from every angle. What air he had in his lungs is torn from it and he begins to panic knowing there's nowhere to swim up for more. Then suddenly a bright light fills the foamy white water, and solid ground scrapes and grinds under his back. The water level recedes and he finally has air again. When he opens his eyes and regains his bearings, he finds himself laying like a waterlogged rat, sprawled out on the floodplain at the foot of the cave's entrance, bones and muscles sore and achy from being dashed about the cave's floor and walls, but otherwise alive.

After tumbling and scraping his way to a stop, Bug takes a moment to recollect himself. Severus and Osvaldo decide to press forward into the cave they ducked into to avoid the rushing waters, thinking bug will probably return after he's sorted himself out a bit. Sure enough they hear the gnome's footsteps splashing towards them. The little rogue had intended to run back and catch up as quickly as possible, but the washed out cave mouth now makes stealth and running incompatible. As bug arrives at the side tunnel he's failed to jump to he sees the light of his new companions' torches ahead, and catches up with them just as they reach an intersection.

To the right, it appears the tunnels continues upward and on until to likely intersects with the bridge the goblin was guarding when he gave the alarm to release the water. The left is more concerning, for here they find a large cave chamber.

Quote:
This large cave is divided in half by a ten-foot-high escarpment. A steep natural staircase on the far east end leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge. The air is hazy with the smoke of a cooking fire, and pungent from the smell of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins.
Having heard the rushing water and seeing the approaching light of the human's torches, five armed goblins stand glaring at the party.

Severus rushes in to attack, but his swing misses as the goblin dodges the attack handily. When he enters the chamber though, he sees a sixth goblin, brawnier than the others eating a hunk of meat. Next to the goblin is a man in armor.
He appears to be in his late forties or early fifties, but it's hard to be sure as his face is a mess. He's been severely beaten and is bound and gagged.

Osvaldo shoots his bow at another goblin hitting it in the stomach, and he gives a grunt before looking up in fury at the ranger.

The sixth goblin, positioned on the escarpment above barks a series of orders and the goblins rush Severus and Osvaldo. Goblins 1, 3 and 4 all slash at Severus with their scimitars.
Two of the goblins attacks hit through Severus's armor doing a total of 14 Damage, and Severus falls to the ground.

Bug dashes up to the one Osvaldo struggles with unnoticed and sinks both daggers into the face of the goblin.. It immediately collapses to the floor having never know the presence of its true killer.

Just as Severus gets ready to bring down one of his attackers, the larger goblin atop the stone shelf with the wounded knight draws his blade against the man's throat and barks a series of orders in its own tongue. Both of the goblins cease their attack on Severus. Then just as one is about to swing anyway the large one bellows even more angrily in his ugly-sounding language, and the goblin halts for certain.

Holding the combatants below at bay for a moment he speaks to Severus in poor Common:
"We wait. No need for fight more now. We help each other and both be rewarded..."
Jan 3, 2021 8:43 pm
Somewhat shocked, and still raging, Severus looks towards the large goblin with wild eyes. Through gritted teeth, the barbarian replies:

"I'm listening"
Jan 4, 2021 4:40 pm
"I Yeemik", says the goblin gesturing to himself with his rusted, chipped scimitar. "I Yeemik, and I number two goblin in Cragmaw Hideout. But Klarg number one goblin in Cragmaw Hideout. So you must see we have same enemy together. I want be number one goblin in Cragmaw Hideout and you no like us goblins in Cragmaw Hideout attacking you on your road.
"Plus..."
, he says after a pause, "I think you want this one back."
Yeemik returns his blade to the tied and beaten man's throat. "You kill Klarg and I boss. I can say, 'Let this one go" and he goes with you. Or we keep fighting and I cut this one's head off now."

The beaten man, through swollen eyes and a broken nose says faintly, "Don't... He's a goblin. They can't be trusted..."

Yeemik jerks the man's head savagely by a handful of hair, as if to shut him up and remind him who's in charge right now, but looks eagerly on for the party's decision.
Jan 4, 2021 4:48 pm
Severus squints at the brutalised man whom he assumes is Sildur, then says, "Yeemik, your proposition makes sense to me but my friend has a point. We need to be very clear on the terms of this arrangement, and you will also have to persuade my comrades in arms".

Osvaldo's first instinct is to let loose with an arrow into Yeemik's face, but the prisoner next to him, who he also assumes is Sildur, steadies that urge. He looks at Yeemik as he speaks and tries to discern if he's telling the truth.

Insight - (1d20+2)

Trying to determine the trustworthiness of this particular goblin is impossible of Osvaldo. It's pretty well accepted that goblins are most often a cowardly and opportunistic lot, and the fact that the second ranking goblin of this outfit is trying to usurp the throne of number one ranking goblin, all while putting himself at as little personal risk as possible, comes as no surprise.

His assertion that he will end the ambushes on travelers traveling the Triboar Trail is almost entirely laughable, especially if what Glarkvak said is true: This hideout is merely an outpost serving to provide scavenged materials to a larger castle to the north, run by someone higher up calling the shots. If Klarg is taking orders, Yeemik most certainly will be.

As to whether, Yeemik intends to actually release his hostage and let the party go is another matter indeed. It certainly would be in his power to do so. Whether he can be trusted to is another matter of faith, and his honesty is impossible to get a read on. He does seem pretty confident that the scimitar he holds to his hostage's throat at the moment is a pretty strong bargaining chip for the moment, either way.
Jan 5, 2021 4:46 pm
"We can't tarry any longer", Severus says looking alternatively at Osvaldo and Bug. "Bugs, right, we have to deal with Klarg anyway, but let's do that with half our mission accomplished - Sildur at our side!"

Turning to Yeemik, Severus says, "Very well, Yeemik. We will despatch Klarg for you. Release Sildur and tell us where your boss is, and how many guards he has with him."
Jan 6, 2021 5:20 pm

You eventually arrive at the bridge at the intersection where the stream passage that flooded out continues up beyond another set of uneven steps ahead, bending eastward as it goes. Making sure not to raise his voice too loud in case anything is lurking within earshot, Alstaer makes his presence known. "Psst, hey guys, wait up...", cautiously Alstaer makes his way up to the bridge and his comrades. "Sorry, I let you down...but the whole business with the goblins and Quinny going missing...you’ve got to understand, I’ve never been outside of Neverwinter before. I was hiding outside when I saw you," he points at Bug, "wash out of the cave...a-and you got up! And just strolled right back into the cave...and I realised that I was letting myself and you down". At the sight of the stranger, Bug instinctively readies into a crouch, hands readying over his daggers. But as the voice speaks up, he throws quick, puzzled glances towards Severus and Osvaldo, before realizing this is not a new threat.

At the mention of being washed out of the cave, a small smile breaks across Bug's lips. "I'd been meaning to take a bath anyway. Severus, Bug, and Osvaldo were crossing the bridge headed east, when the saw Alstaer approach in the tunnel with the stream below. Severus went back to the stream tunnel, grabbed his javelin, and greetings were made.

Bug and Osvaldo are still on the bridge above and their tunnel runs east (the red arrow). Meanwhile, Severus and Alstaer ar in the stream tunnel, which passes under the bridge and continues north. (the yellow arrow).

Severus suspects that if the bridge tunnel crew heads east, and the stream tunnel crew heads north, they'll both arrive at Klarg's tunnel in a pincer attack.

The split groups of parties continue on and their suspicions prove partially true...

This cavern is half filled with two large pools of water, though the evidence of 1 pool shows it been recently emptied. A narrow waterfall high in the eastern wall feeds the pool, which drains out the western end of the chamber to form the stream that flows out of the cave mouth below. Low fieldstone walls serve as dams holding the water in. A wide exit stands to the south, while two smaller passages lead west. The sound of the waterfall echoes through the cavern, making it difficult to hear.

Three goblins guard this cave, ready for a fight and listening for orders from the now deceased bridge goblin to release the second dam of water. As you arrive in the cavern they draw scimitars and prepare for battle.

Osvalso's arrow barely misses one goblin, who looks viciously at the ranger in preparation for a counter attack. Alstaer's fire bolt goes way off the mark and strikes a set of natural stairs to the south of the chamber.
OOC:
Bug is up before the goblins' turn.
Jan 19, 2021 5:44 pm
Seeing the previous attacks shoot wide, Bug seizes the distraction as an opportunity to close the distance between himself and the goblin. Keeping his shoulder against the stone wall, he dashes up to the closest goblin, careful not to block it from view from his ranged companions. Both daggers swing towards the target, the first attempting to parry the scimitar out of the and the second driving home in the goblin itself.

Bug's main hand attack misses but his off-hand attack hits, barely grazing the goblin. The goblin's focus had been on Osvaldo, but having been cut, it's unwilling to leave itself open to another attack to run down the ranger, so it slashes at the rogue with it's short sword, which misses the gnome entirely.

The second goblin, rushes up the natural stairs to the south and you hear t shout to someone beyond, though the sound of the waterfall falling from above and filling the still unsprung dam-trap drowns out what the goblin might be saying or who it might be saying it to.

Sassafras says:
OOC:
By hugging the wall, would I be able to move within line of sight of the goblin that disappeared without taking an attack of opportunity from the one by Bug?
OOC:
Normally no, not if you wanted to stay on dry ground. You could move past it by going into the water. However considering the current circumstances, it shouldn't be an issue because...
Bug steps to the goblin and drived his main dagger up, shoving it through the throat of the monster, and the goblin's knees buckle as it falls forward gurgling on it's own blood.

The room is now empty, devoid of enemies, but one goblin escaped, climbing a set of natural stone stairs into another chamber to the south.

Jan 23, 2021 7:05 pm
OOC:
Are we still in initiative order, DM?
Severus recovers his javelin and cautiously begins to ascend the steps to the south of the cave
Jan 23, 2021 7:36 pm
OOC:
I would say we probably are in initiative order since Alstaer ran forward and finds the following...
Alstaer rushes forward to check where the final goblin fled to. Ay the top of the natural staircase he sees the small creature wildly shouting something in its own tongue to a huge bugbear. A wolf stands at attention between the pair which suddenly gives a vicious snarl when it sees the sorcerer.
OOC:
Since Alstaer only moved he can take an Action this round as well if he likes. Then will be the goblin's turn. That will conclude the round, and at the beginning of the next round I'll make an Initiative roll for the bugbear and the wolf and we'll shuffle them in where they fit in the preexisting turn order.

OOC:
Goblins turn, correct?
Jan 24, 2021 6:48 pm
OOC:
Correct.
The goblin has the bugbear's attention with whatever it's saying to the larger creature, but they can't be overheard over the sounds of the waterfall behind the sorcerer, and Alstaer takes the opportunity to throw a fireball at the monster. True to form, the blast misses sailing over the bugbear's head and hitting the wall behind it. The bugbear flinches, caught off guard, and the snarling wolf takes a tentative step back as if assessing the risks of rushing to its master's aid right away.

The goblin, on the other hand looks at Alstaer, then quickly at the bigbear, who gives his smaller kin a glare. Whether he wishes or not, the goblin sees what he must do. He rushes the sorcerer with his scimitar.
With no armor to blunt the attack, Alstaer can only raise his arms in a defensive gesture, and he takes a cut to the arm for his efforts.
OOC:
Alstaer takes 3HP damage, with 5 remaining.

Correct, it's the Sharpshooter feat, -5 to hit, +10 to damage. It's on my character sheet notes, for reference.

Feb 8, 2021 7:07 pm
The wolf near the bugbear makes to rush after Severus, malice in its eyes. It charges forward fifteen feet when a sudden command from the bugbear brings it to a halt. It looks menacingly at Severus, as if it wants nothing more than to drag the barbarian to the floor and tear his throat out, but grudgingly obeys the command of the bugbear and stays put.

Severus realises that now might be the time to disengage from a brutal bloody struggle and attempt a ruse:

"Great Klarg, we wish only to show you our might as warriors. We will make good your loss of men by saving the life of the mighty Klarg! You have been betrayed, great lord! Yeemik sent us here. If we bring your head to him, he will release our comrade who he is holding as a hostage. We only seek the return of our friend. Will you come with us, kill Yeemik, and release our comrade? Or must we seek your head. As Great Klarg commands, we will do", Severus, somewhat clumsily, bows his head in a gesture of supplication

Determined to get to the bottom of this alleged coup, Klarg marches out of his chamber, over the wdden bridge spanning the stream, and towards the chamber where Yeemik is holding the man hostage. As he approaches the chamber's entrance, he barely glances at two dead goblins you dispatched of earlier and enters the room. You notice the bodies remain where they fell but their corpses seem to have been stripped of anything of value to a goblin.
As Klarg and his wolf enter the chamber, another body the party killed remains where it fell but is likewise robbed of it's weapons and gear, and Yeemik and his two remaining companions are up on the elevated section of the room, harassing the beaten man with their weapons and seem to be in good spirits, no down in anticipation of Yeemik's new rise to power.
So it comes as little surprise to see his face fall and his eyes widen in shock when Klark and his wolf come marching into the room with the party following.
"Klarg", Yeemik snivels in surprise followed by something in goblin tongue. Likewise, Klarg makes no effort to bother with trying to use his broken common, and the following argument is entirely in goblin. A lot of Klarg's end of the discussion appears to be an angry interrogation, while Yeemik seems to feign innocence. A few times you hear Klarg bellow something in which you catch the word "Yeemik" as he gestures to you all, to which Yeemik shrugs his shoulders. After a few more back-and-forths, Klarg makes a more calm, yet no less sinister statement in goblin and suddenly Yeemik and his two companions are on their feet, swords and bows drawn.
Yeemik suddenly looks over to the party and makes a desperate plea. "You now listen. If Klarg die, Yeemik promise you I no kill friend!" He gestures to the beaten man he and his companions were just harassing. "But if Yeemik die, Klarg no let friend go free. Klarg will kill Yeemik, then friend, then you. And then he feeding all of us to wolf, Ripper! But you help us and we be six fighting two! You Smart! You know Yeemik right!"
Mar 1, 2021 10:30 am
There is a moments pause that feels like an eternity. Confusion, What to do? All the party will be feeling it. Must act. Must decide. Severus lets his gaze fall upon Sildur's battered face and a rage wells within him. Gritting his teeth, the barbarian turns to Yeekmik - "You're just to stupid and ugly to live another day. We want to see you bleed you filthy piece of scum"

Man, this round is not going well for the party.
Bug rushes in and slashes the goblin twice with his daggers, but the goblin manages to duck and dodge each attack.
OOC:
I just realized that I didn't drag Bug over on the map before I took the screenshot. We'll say he was at E5 and ran to G7 to attack. That way he's not directly next to any goblin except his target.
Mar 4, 2021 5:16 pm
Klarg's wolf Ripper rushes up the stairs and attacks the goblin to Klarg's right. It grabs hold of the goblin by the throatand thrashes it's head back and forth, tearing the companion's throat out. The goblin falls to the ground bleeding to death.

Fire bolt Vs Yeemik - (1d20+5)

(12) + 5 = 17

Damage - (1d10)

(10) = 10

Mar 5, 2021 5:28 pm
Alstaer's fire bold hits Yeemik square in the chest and the goblin staggers, reeling and only barely manages to stay on his feet, his chest now covered in a terrible burn, skin blackened and sloughing off where the bolt hit him directly.

The goblin confronted by Bug and the Bugbear (I should start a band with that name) slashes at Klarg with his scimitar. His weapon cuts deeply and Klarg gives a bellow of pain and anger as his chest is sliced open.

Yeemik, realizing he's in dire straights, rushes over to who I think we all know is Sildar Hallwinter by now, and grabs Sildar by the hair, drawing his scimitar to the man's throat. "You wait now and hear! You help fight Klarg now or I kill friend by own self!

Halwinter, hands and feet bound, can do nothing as Yeemik Readies an Action to see if the party joins him against Klarg or continues to attack him.
OOC:

Yeemik is Readying and Action right now with his scimitar to the throat of a badly beaten Sildar Hallwinter, already sitting on the precipice of death.

I still have mine! Yup, I played this with a friend before the pandemic hit, paladin and monk, pally got unconscious, I had to drag him out mid combat and evaded the goblins so we can rest and both heal up. Surprisingly rough encounter for 1st level.

OOC:
I was in the middle of writing up Klarg's reaction to your betrayal of him and response when it occurred to me that if Severus did in fact move to F8, and he has changed his allegiance, he is now currently allied with the goblin at H8 who Klarg is fighting. I believe this would now have given him Advantage on his attack, since Klarg is surrounded on opposite sides by enemies. If you'd like to make a second attack roll due to your Advantage, go for it, before Klarg makes you pay for your betrayal.

Oh geez, that was a good hit...
Severus rushes up to the Bugbear from behind and swings his great axe. It's blade sinks deeply into the monster's side, burying itself through it's kidney and stopping just short of the spinal column. Klarg give's a grunt of pain, having been taken unawares, and blood gushes out of his side as Severus withdraws the axe. The bugbear lives, though whether that be the case in an hour is another story.
Klarg turns and eyes Severus with surprise and anger and swings his morning star.
OOC:
Oh, you lucky dog... Klarg is doing TERRIBLE this fight!
He swings his weapon and it sails past Severus's face, whiffing and realizing he may be in dire straights.

Osvaldo fires his bow at Yeemik, who manages to duck the arrow. Surprise register's across his face, followed by a second of confusion as Klarg's second in command tries to figure out just exactly where your alliance lies, followed by a nasty look indicating you've just cost the beaten man his life.

Klarg nearly reacts to Bug's charge with a morning star to the little gnome's skull but seeing at the last minute that Bug is running for Yeemik, he checks himself at the last minute. Meanwhile, the rush catches Yeemik off-guard and before he can raise his scimitar to defend himself, Bug has struck the goblin with a series of slices any of which would have ended the goblin betrayer. Yeemik falls to his knees and bleeds to death, to a guffaw from Klarg.

Ripper, in an effort to please and protect its master, bites at Yeemik's only surviving henchman. The goblin is so absorbed with watching his leader die he never sees the attack coming and after grabbing the goblin by the throat, he shakes the life out of the creature and leaves him on the floor dead as well.

Bug rushes over and swings his daggers at the Bugbear. The first one misses by a country mile. The second one misses by a mere whisker. Klarg turns and snarls a command in goblin and Ripper lunges for Bug.
Ripper's jaws clamp down on Bug's left forearm and the gnome feels the teeth sink in, and the wold begins thrashing and tugging to try and bring Bug to the ground.

Excellent expenditure of your Inspiration Point.
Alstaer, so slow to learn how to control the trajectory of his Fire Bolt spell for so long, notices that recently the magics have been finding their mark at key moments, and as his latest bolt hurls across the cave, strikes the bugbear in the face, and instantly brings the monster to it's knees, his companions are back in this fight and may yet have a chance of surviving long enough to escape with Sildar in tow. Only Ripper the wolf remains, and it backs a step or two back uncertain of it's own odds before responding to the party with a resolute snarl.

Very nice roll for Severus!
Severus opens his eyes and finds himself lying face down on hard stone. In his confusion he thinks for a moment that he's witnessing the corona effect of a solar eclipse, rays of light emanating from a blackened central orb, but as his eyes focus he realizes that he's looking at fingers of flame cooking the blackened skull of some man or man-like creature lying beside him. The're seems to be a commotion going on around him: muffled shouting, the confusion of some low snarl or growling of some kind. But he has no idea where he's at or why he's there, and so he puts has palms to the stone beneath him and begins pushing himself to his feet.

OOC:
Yeah, actually. I was of the assumption that the wolf's attack was based on a grapple that drags you to the ground, but upon further research, it merely "knocks" you to the ground. Pretty stupid in my opinion, since wolves LITERALLY drag their prey to the ground and hold them there for the rest of the pack to tear into, but I guess D&D doesn't really know wolf stuff.

Technically, these D&D wolves are a bunch of bums, and Bug is merely knocked prone but not held there in a cool wolf-grapple.

Between the pain from the wolf's teeth and the ground coming up to meet him, the panic Bug is feeling starts to show across his face. He scrambles up to his feet in the moment the wolf is preparing another attack, eyes never leaving the wolf, and hold his dagger up in a defensive crouch to ready himself for whatever comes next.
OOC:
Bug will use part of his movement to stand up but stay in the same square he is in and then will take the dodge action, hoping to weather this next round of attacks.

Bug stands up after the attack from ripper and braces himself for the next assault, and Ripper happily obliges the gnome...
OOC:
Oh man... It was a decent gamble to make, but the dice favored the wolf.
Ripper lunges and barrels into Bug, and closes it's jaws around the little rogue's throat. As the light in the cave wanes and disappears into a tiny pinprick in Bug's vision, he feels the pain of the animal's teeth and jaws closing even further on his neck, warm blood running into hos collar and down his back...

Severus already spent his Inspiration Point. I believe only Bug and Alstaer have one at the moment. In any case, the attack's re-roll would have still missed, though just barely.
Severus swings his axe at the wolf, determined to fell it in one chop, but his head still swims from the blow to the skull from the dead bugbear, and his blade sweeps past Ripper, close enough to nearly shave the fur from its other flank. The canine whirls away from the attack and looks quickly to the barbarian, intent readable in its eyes. Bringing down the weakest of any herd is in its nature and now that Severus has gotten his attention, Ripper sees who must be brought down first: the big one; normally quite dangerous but shaken and wounded badly...

OOC:
Round 5 continues! I'll need a Death saving roll from Bug for his turn.
Meanwhile, having drawn attention to himself as well as being the only member of the party in melee range and still standing, Ripper attempts to pull Severus back out of the fight with his bloody jaws, and again the already beaten barbarian falls to the ground as the wolf tears and gnashes into him.
OOC:
I'll need Severus to start the Death save process again on his next turn. Remember that should any PC use their turn to try and stabilize a fallen companion, they succeed on a DC10 Medicine roll ending the Death save process. Though with this wolf in the picture and standing over them, now might not be the best time for the ranged fighters to try.
Turn order is as follows:
1. Severus (21)
2. Osvaldo (16)
3. Bug (15)
4. Ripper (14)
--> 5. [b]Alstaer (13)
[/ooc]

Rolls

Wolf Attack roll, Damage roll - (1d20+4, 2d4+2)

1d20+4 : (16) + 4 = 20

2d4+2 : (13) + 2 = 6

Seeing his stronger companions fall to the ground, Alstaer desperately tries to finish off the wolf before it has a chance to pounce on him.
OOC:

OOC:
You did, I must have missed it. So only Bug has one at the moment then. Alstaer is really throwing some hammers on these guys as of late.
Seeing his companions going down so quickly at the jaws of ripper Alstaer sends another Fire Bolt spell at the wolf which hits the animal broadside, knocking it aside for a second. Rippers coat catches fire a moment and as it gutters out the sorcerer can see an ugly burned wound on the animal's side, blackened ribs exposed. The wolf regains its footing but it's breathing in heavy, labored gasps now as its tongue lolls around in it's mouth.
OOC:
Round 5 ends; Round 6 begins. We'll need a Bug's first Death saving roll for Round 5, and now a Severus's first Death Saving Roll for Round 6. Then turn order is as follows:
1. Severus (21)
--> 2. Osvaldo (16)
3. Bug (15)
4. Ripper (14)
--> 5. [b]Alstaer (13)

I know hos player is sometimes a bit slower to post, but we're so close to wrapping up this encounter, and unless hebrolls a Nat-20, there's nothing else for him to do, so I'll go ahead and roll Bug's two Death save rolls right now. In a out an hour I'll make Ripper's post.

That's1 fail, 1 success for Bug; 1 success for Severus...

Sensing that it's own demise is imminent, but bolstered at having taken down at least two of it's attackers, Ripper puts forth his a last surge of primal adrenaline and rushes to take out his last two foes. He bounds down the natural stone stairs and leaps for his nearest attacker, which happens to be the ranger with the bow.
The attack smashes into Osvaldo and he feels the wolf's jaws close on his wrist doing 6HP damage.

OOC:
Osvaldo has 11HP remaining, and he must make a Strength roll to avoid being knocked prone. Also, now that his enemy is within 5' of him, any bow attack is at Disadvantage.

Round 6 wraps up with Alstaer's turn.

Osvaldo resists the wolf's momentum, turning his center of gravity and keeping his feet under him, then draws swords and slashes viciously at Ripper. Blades tear through throat and flank, and the wolf gives a final snarl and gasp and falls dead! As the ranger looks around him he realizes it's not quite time to celebrate as two of his companions lay dying on the ground.
OOC:
Severus has one pass and one failed Death Save. Bug is in dire straights, having passed one and failed two. If Bug fails another he perishes. The Death Save process for any fallen character can be halted should he be healed (through potions or spells), or at least stabilized by another PC making a successful DC10 Wisdom (Medicine) roll. If stabilized with a Medicine roll, the downed character remains unconscious with 0HP, but can stop making Death Save rolls.

Since there are still fallen PC's and time is of the essence, I'm going to continue the turn order process untill Severus and Bug's situation is resolved one way on another.
Round 7 continues with Alstaer finishing the round.

Alstaer rushes over to Bug and tend's tonthe rogue's most dire injuries. Slowly the gnome's labored, agonal breathing begins to calm, and the sorcerer begins feeling confident that while his small companion remains unconscious, he'll at least be easy to carry out of this ugly den, so long as no further injury befalls him.
Severus on the other hand, may be a bit more difficult to haul out to the open air, but none of that will matter if the party can get him stabilized as well.
OOC:
Round 8 begins, though the only objective of real importance at the moment is getting the barbarian stabilized. We'll take another Death save roll from Severus who is currently at 1/1. Severus killing it over here with the Nat-20's on Death saves... He regains consciousness and has 1HP again.
Severus once again opens his eyes and finds himself lying on the stone floor. As he starts regaining presence and bringing himself around, Osvaldo rushes over and begins jabbing his filthy fingers in the barbarian's bite wounds, risking masking the injuries worse.

Looking around, you all see bug being tended to by Alstaer. The gnome remains unconscious, but the majority of his worst injuries seem to be staunched at least. Up on the higher portion of the cave, Sildar Hallwinter remains bound, beaten nearly as badly as Severus.

Around you lie a dead bugbear, a dead wolf, and a number of equally dead goblins, some loyal to Klarg, others fallen in aid of Yeemik.
Apr 18, 2021 7:40 pm
"Free Sildar, makes sure he's alright", Severus stammers to Osvaldo
Apr 18, 2021 7:54 pm
Alstaer overhears Severus and quickly rushes over to Sildar to make sure he’s alright and to free him from his restraints. "Are you alright?"
Apr 19, 2021 2:49 am
Confident that Severus will make it, he goes over to Sildar. "Friend, do you need medical assistance?", Osvaldo's filthy fingers now covered in Severus's blood and muck.
Apr 19, 2021 7:01 pm
Freed from his bindings, Sildar thanks each of you and replies to Osvaldo. "I think I should be well, thank you. My companion, Gundren Rockseeker, and I were waylaid on the road to Phandalin by this bugbear and his crew, on instruction of someone called the 'Black Spider'. Gundren was to be delivered to the chief of the Cragmaw goblins at a place they called 'Cragmaw Castle'. I don't know where that is, but perhaps someone in Phandalin might know. The sooner I get there and mend and get some information, the sooner I can set out in search of Gundren."
He reaches down and picks up a scimitar dropped by the nearest goblin and examines its heft before continuing. "My weapons and armor, along with the rest of my belongings were taken with Gundren to this 'castle'. I got the impression my only value was that of a few days' meals for them eventually. Though no doubt there may be other items of value should you search these bodies and Klarg's chambers, all yours as you've earned it, if you would be kind enough to escort me to Phandalin I would pay you 50 gold to split among yourselves on arrival. I don't have the coin on me at the moment, but give me a day in Phandalin to meet with my contacts there and I'll have a loan secured. Would you be interested?"
Apr 19, 2021 11:28 pm
Though the pain is great, Severus lifts himself from the floor now red with his blood. He looks to Sildar and says, "Gundren hired us to see his wagon to Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin, and that is what we will do. You are welcome to travel with us and to do so without cost."

Bug remains unconscious. What would everyone else like to do?
Apr 21, 2021 7:43 am
Alstaer looks at his unconscious companion. "Should we take him out of these caves and rest up until he recovers? He seems stable enough"
Apr 21, 2021 10:30 pm
"Yes, yes, we must rest. We've all shed blood in this infernal place. But our blood has claimed these caves as sanctuary. I say we rest here overnight and head for Phandalin on the morrow". The barbarian winces, and lies down once more, resting his head on his rucksack. But though his battered body finds some repose, Severus mind will not still itself.

"Sildar? Why would the goblins take Gundren from this place rather than just eat him? Dwarf meat too tough? You say this 'Black Spider' ordered your capture? What purpose could they have? Is there something we don't know?

In reply to Severus's inquiry, Sildar tells the barbarian, and any others listening, what he knows:
"More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.
"A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.
"Gundren Rockseeker and his two brothers, Tharden and Nyndro, recently located an entrance to what they believe to be this long-lost cave, site of the mines of the Phandelver's Pact. You and your companions were to deliver a wagon containing a bunch of mining equipment for initial survey and exploration, while Gundren and I headed out sooner.
"Gundren and I were intercepted by Klarg and his cronies under orders of someone named the "Black Spider", and Dulgrim was ordered taken to this Cragmaw Castle.
"I know Gundren had a map showing the secret location of this cave when we were accosted, but the goblins took it. I believe the the map was taken with Gundren to this 'castle'. Who this 'Black Spider' is and why he wants Gundren and the map is open to any sort of speculation.
I accompanied Gundren, not only because he is a good friend of mine, but I also have other business in Plandalin."

OOC:
Okay I'm going to assume you're going to take a long rest (8 hours). Will you guys be taking 2-hour watches throughout the night?

Apr 25, 2021 5:08 pm
Sildar takes the first watch, despite the aches of his beaten body. After two hours he wakens Alstaer who covers the next two hours. About halfway through the watch Bug finally regains consciousness, though, like the others he's beaten and bloodied. He immediately sets himself back to sleep, looking for a long rest. Osvaldo takes third watch, keeping an eye on his companions and after another two hours he wakes Severus, who takes the final watch giving Bug enough extra time to recover as well.
OOC:
Everyone enjoys the benefits of a Long Rest. Go ahead and make your adjustments to your character sheets, which means at the very least you all regain your 1HD to be used for any short rests you take this day, and start at your PC's full HP.

OOC:
I'd like to loot the caves before heading out for Phandalin
Apr 26, 2021 5:18 pm
Severus, with the aid of any others that wish to make the job go faster, spend an hour or ninety minutes this morning going through each room of the cave, as well as searching the bodies of those that have fallen in combat.
The goblins' possessions are almost entirely useless. They carry an odd assortment of artifacts ranging from small bones, polished but otherwise worthless stones, scraps of filthy fabric which might be nothing more than snot rags, and an occasional tooth of some creature or another. The scimitars they carry are rusted, nicked, and rather dull. Their short bows are basic and rudimentary things. Any of these weapons would have some utilitarian value if you chose to arm yourselves with them, but you're unlikely to earn anything but scrap fees at best if you were haul them somewhere to be sold. The only goblin with anything of value in his possessions is Yeemik, who wears a pouch containing 3 gold teeth (1gp each), and 15sp.
Searching Klarg you find little of value on his person, as well. He wears rough hide armor and carries a basic shield. He wielded a morningstar (1d8 piercing damage), but again, it doesn't look to be of any real value beyond utilitarian purposes.
The rest of the chambers of this cave system are more or less empty, except for the room Klarg uses as his personal cave.
Quote:
Sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into darkness. A larger opening leads north down a set of natural stone steps, the roar of falling water echoing from beyond. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder.
The sacks and crates have the logo of a Blue Lion painted on the sides of them. Bug would know this to be the logo of the Lionshield Coster, a merchant company with a warehouse and trading post in Phandalin, because these were the shipment of goods he and his old companions were hired to escort before his original party was waylaid on the road. Bug would also know that should these goods be delivered as originally intended, your party would receive payment of another 50gp to be split evenly amongst yourselves. Besides the sacks and crates, you find buried in their midst a treasure chest belonging to Klarg. Opening it you find 600cp, 110sp, 2 Potions of Healing, and a Jade statuette of a frog with tiny golden orbs for eyes.. The frog statuette is small enough to fit in a pocket or pouch.

After waking from a much needed rest, Bug slowly works his way into a sitting position to assess his wounds. After silently going over the fight for a few moments, he looks around to anyone currently in the room with him. "Thank you all for getting me out of that last scrap. The folks I'm used to running with would have let me for dead as soon as things went south. It's good to know my back is being watched like that."

After the logo of the Blue Lion is found, Bug says, "Those with the Lion on them are supposed to reach the Lionshield Coster. Fifty gold was supposed to be our payment before we got delayed here. We may be little later than they expected, but wouldn't hurt to check if were heading that way."

Looking at Bug, "You've proven your worth as an ally Bug, welcome aboard.

gesturing at Sildar, And there's nothing else of value here. I say we head out to Phandalin and this Lionshield Coster."

OOC:
You guys have enough room on the wagon for both the shipment of mining gear you were to deliver to Barthen's Provisions and for the stuff Bug was to deliver to the Loinshield Coster, but it will take you most of the day to unpack the wagon and repack it so that everything fits snug and well, but aside from the driver of the cart, the rest of you will have to walk. Is it safe to assume nobody has a problem with this? If not, would you rather get everything packed and head off the following morning, or travel through the night? And who will you assign to drive the cart?
Apr 28, 2021 10:23 am

Apr 28, 2021 5:58 pm
OOC:
Morning would be best. I've got a +2 too. I can walk or scout the area ahead as we travel.
Apr 29, 2021 5:04 am
Watches are kept for the night, and the party wakes at the rise of the morning sun and sets out on their final leg to Phandelver. Because the cart can only move as fast at the slowest party walking, likely the gnome with his short legs, it takes almost the entirety of the day to travel, but with the Cragmaw Hideout goblins dispatched of, the party can take pride in the thought that it likely will be a while before anymore travelers are molested along the Triboar Trail.
As evening approaches,
Quote:
The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins -crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars- surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town. As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
Sildar seems much more at ease. "My friends," he says, "let us secure lodgings. I'm told the local inn is very quaint."
OOC:
And with that, the Part 1 of the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure is completed. At this point all PCs earn 275XP. For Severus, Osvaldo, and Alstaer, this should be enough to reach Level 2. For Bug, this unfortunately means that he is about 25XP short of advancing, but take heart: up to this point the mosule dictated that XP be awarded based on reaching story milestones. For the remainder of the module the characters will earn experience points based on the monsters and traps they overcome, the NPCs they interact with, and the goals they accomplish. So Bug is not far from catching up and should achieve Level 2 in almost no time, should the players wish to continue with Part 2: Phandalin.
