Part 1: Goblin Arrows

Osvaldo moves to I13, skirting along the edge of the copse of bushes next to him before plunging back into them to enjoy 3/4 cover.

Suddenly, no more than ten feet from where severus stands in the thick bushes, the twang of a bow sounds, followed immediately by a "crack" sound, and an arrow aimed directly for the barbarian’s face is deflected by a small branch only a foot or so in front of Severus’s forehead. The arrow sails by Severus’s head so closely he can feel the wisp of air the feathers theve in their wake as it sails past his left temple, and broken branches pepper his face.
Immediately following this, small footsteps are heard retreating deeper away from the advancing barbarian, and as your eyes track the sound you see the goblin through the foliage just as it squats down in an effort to hide from you again.
OOC:
The 3/4 cover Severus is in has saved him from taking a particularly nasty hit from the goblin's arrow.
OOC:
Round 2 ends, and Round 3 begins. The goblin's hide attempt failed this time, but he is still taking advantage of 3/4 from the bushes he's in. Turn order is as follows:

Really feeling his oats now, the young sorcerer lets loose another Fire Bolt cantrip. The ball of flame races across the open grass, over the stream burbling forth from the cave's mouth, and into the dense foliage of the bushes, searing leaves and incinerating trigs, before hitting the goblin square in the chest with a direct hit. You all hear a grunt as the watchkeeper hits the ground dead. You wait a moment to see if any further movement comes from the bushes, but all is quiet.

Feeling the surge of magic course through his body, Alstaer feels exhilarated but manages to calm himself down enough before anything extreme happens. "Are you guys alright?".
OOC:
I know that I technically didn't need to give a surge roll, but it felt in character

Osvaldo hears the grunt of the dead goblin. He takes a moment to make sure there are no others, then slowly heads toward the group. Despite being severely injured he manages to keep his composure. He looks down at the arrow sticking out of his stomach, blood dripping to the ground, "Does anyone have any healing?"
Sep 13, 2020 5:05 pm
OOC:
For the record, I don't believe anyone has any healing spells in this party. There's always the option of taking a short rest, since I don't recall Osvaldo doing that yet. Taking a short rest will allow you to heal 1 Hit Die of damage. If you've already used up your Hit Dice on short rests, you may have to take a long rest and get some Hit Dice back.
Sep 15, 2020 1:10 pm
OOC:
nope, we haven't had a chance to rest yet.
Seeing as no one responds with an 'aye' to his question, he mulls over whether taking the arrow out will do more damage, possibly knocking him unconcious or outright killing him.

Medicine - (1d20+2)

Osvaldo draws the arrow from his abdomen. Luckily the arrowheads fashioned by these goblins are rather small and made for piercing, rather than slicing, and their technological level seems to indicate they haven't quite grasped the concept of putting a barb on the heads, which would do more damage upon extraction. If truth be told, these arrows seem almost like target arrows than those one would normally use for hunting or warfare, and going slowly and carefully, paying close attention to his pain thresholds, he draws the arrow out without further injury. The wound bleeds, and Osvaldo is still in bad shape, but a short rest may help him recover.
OOC:
What are Severus and Alstaer doing now that the immediate threat of goblins has been taken care of?
Sep 15, 2020 5:01 pm
Having seen that Quinny's injuries are not too severe, Severus walks over to Osavaldo and watches him pull the Goblin arrow from his stomach. Severus offers the Ranger his waterskin and says, "here, clean the wound. We need to rest awhile so you can regain some strength."
OOC:
Suggest the party does indeed take a short-rest before progressing. DM, what time of day is it?

Severus reflects on where the party's been. The party got an early start on the day earlier this morning, setting out around 6am. At about 11am you encountered the dead horses and the ambush that followed. Squelching the ambush only took a couple of minutes, and then you were lead by your goblin hostage about five miles through dense single-track trail, taking care to avoid traps, which took a very slow three hours. There was a short skirmish that lasted less than a minute with the two goblin guards. Guessing from your sense of time passed and confirmed by the sun overhead, you'd guess that it's pretty close to about 2 in the afternoon, give or take fifteen minutes.

Severus encourages his comrades to help him drag the Goblin cadavers to the cover of the bushes, searching them for anything of value. He gestures to an area of relative cover, and then says:

"Friends, lets rest so Osvaldo and Quinny can recuperate. Alstaer, you have the vision of an Elf, right? We can move out again as the sun falls and hopefully take the Goblin camp unawares. What say you all?"
OOC:
Severus means the area around R16 benefiting from cover to most sides. DM, what time is sunset?

As you decide to take a breather and let those suffering injuries mend a bit, you notice Quinny hasn't reappeared yet. The last any of you saw of her she had bounded into the copse of bushes somewhere near where Severus had. But in the density of the foliage and the heat of battle, you lost sight of her.
OOC:
@therescuant: It's mid-summer in the northern hemisphere, so the sun sets pretty late this time of year. Around 9pm, or a little after.

Having helped Osvaldo to lie comfortably, Severus looks around for Quinny. "Where is she?" he asks absently. "Queen!" he shouts and begins heading west into the bushes.
OOC:
Severus will head west from R16 in search of Quinny

Osvaldo thanks Severus for helping him to lie down. He takes a ration out of his pack and drinks some water. The burst of energy that kept him going for a bit evaporates and he suddenly feels very tired.

Osvaldo, if you would like to use this short rest to heal back some Hit Points, go ahead and make a roll according to your Hit Die.

@Everyone: To regain Hit Points during a Short Rest, a PC needs to take 10 minutes actively resting. The player may then roll as many Hit Dice as they wish, not to exceed the total unused Hit Dice the PC has based on their level, and add the result to the PC's current Hit Points. Remember to add your Constitution Modifier to your Hit Dice roll when adding Hit Points to you current total! Once your Hit Die has been used up, it is gone until the PC takes a Long Rest (a period of 8 hours "resting" with at least 6 hours spent actually sleeping). Hit Dice are then replaced at a rate of 1/2 (round up) the used-up Hit Dice per long rest. All PCs start with 1 Hit Die at Level 1, and gain another Hit Die at each level earned. Your Hit Die depends on your class. Rangers' Hit Dice are d10s. Barbarians' Hit Dice are d12. Rogues' Hit Dice are d8, and d6 for Sorcerers. When using Hit Dice to gain current Hit Points during a short rest you do not have to declare how many Hit Dice you want to roll ahead pf time. You can roll 1 Hit Die at a time and stop when you're satisfied with the number of Hit Points you've gained back. You may never exceed your Maximum Hit Points when using Short Rests to regain Hit Points.

For example, Severus is a Level 3 Barbarian. He will have 3d12 Hit Dice to pull from when he needs to regain Hit Points after combat.
After a particularly ugly encounter with a Bugbear he takes 15HP damage, and after combat is over he decides he needs to take a short rest and heal. While resting he rolls 1d12 and gets a "2", healing 4 Hit Points ("2" plus his Con Modifier pf +2) and now has 2d12 left in his pool. Not satisfied with that he uses another of his Hit Dice, rolling an "11" (=2 Con Modifier =13). This actually takes him to a total of 17HP healed, but may not exceed his Maximum Hit Points so Severus is fully healed, and the extra 2 Hit Points are just scratched and ignored. Severus still has 1d12 Hit Dice to pull from in the future if he needs another short rest. Later that evening the party tales a Long Rest, and Severus gets half (rounded up) his used Hit Dice back. Since he used 2 Hit Dice, he will get 1 back, and will start his day with a total of 2d12 Hit Dice to use.

Let me know if you have any questions on how healing while resting works.
Severus begins shouting out for Quinny, moving through the bushes and bracken. Long minutes go by, and in the meantime the barbarian passes the dead goblin guards, though there isn't a trace of the party's companion. It's unclear if she's been captured, if she's turn tail and run during combat, or if she's injured and unable to respond. She's simply gone.

As you're resting and searching for your companion, you hear the unmistakable sounds of barking dogs coming from somewhere inside the cave entrance.

Per PHB, looks like I also keep my 5 temp hit points till they're depleted or I take a long rest. The Tireless ability has no set duration.

OOC:
@ctme2000: Ah, okay... Good catch. So I had you losing 4 HP in the first ambush on this post, and another 7HP damage during the surprise round against the goblin guards in this post. That left Osvaldo with 1HP left. Having healed back 12HP with your Tireless Feat, you should now have 13HP (1 temporary HP). Is that what you have as well?
Sep 19, 2020 10:04 pm
The temp hit points are their own pool, separate from class HP. So I healed back to my full hit points, 12, with the short rest, and still have the temp 5 HP as a buffer that gets depleted first.
