OOC:
Actually, before you finalize this, please give me a moment to post Round 2. I messed up in Round 1, and as a result Mathias should have taken no damage. I'll explain this mistake in more detail in today's post, which should be uploaded in the next 60 minutes or so. After you've read today's post feel free to reconsider your choice for Mathias's turn.

OOC:
First and foremost, I need to apologise. In Round 1, I had made an error regarding missile weapon ranges and coinciding attack rolls. Ranged weapons in 5e have 2 numbers, separated by a "/". The first number is normal range, and the second number is long range. I operated under the misunderstanding that firing at a distance under normal range gives the attacker Advantage, and firing at a distance between normal and long was a regular To Hit roll. This is incorrect. Firing at a distance up to the normal range is a normal roll, and firing at a distance between the normal and long range limit is at Disadvantage. Because of that, Goblin 1’s attack on Mathias should not have been at Advantage simply for being within the normal range limits. I should only have made 1 To Hit roll, which would have been the first roll. As this roll was a "1", the result should have been automatic failure. For this reason, the damage done to Mathias will be retconned and he remains currently at full health.
Round 2 begins!
Seeing another goblin erupt from the trees, ready to fire down on Mathias from the embankment, Osvaldo lets off another shot with his longbow. A second arrow finds the exposed throat of a goblin, and with a wet gurgle its legs collapse under it and it wetly gasps out its dying breaths as the conflict resumes around it.
OOC:
Alstaer has the next turn in Initiative order, followed by the goblins, then Quinny’s post will be recognised. I will give @AOC1996 the opportunity to revise their post, due to my mistake in Round 1, though if you still wish for Mathias to use his battleaxe attack on Goblin 2 (R8) and want to keep the "17" To Hit roll, I will allow it.

OOC:
I'll keep my actions, minus the use of Second Wind! Thank you!

OOC:
If Goblin 1 is still standing I’ll go for him again, otherwise I guess one of the ones in cover

Edit: Good god, such a non-factor in this combat 😅

Rolls

Fire bolt - (1d20+5)

(2) + 5 = 7

Aug 9, 2020 7:03 pm
Alstaer sees Osvaldo drop the goblin he had his eye on. He decides instead to throw another firebolt at one of the remaining two goblins; a nearly impossible shot to make as they are both well concealed behind the dead horses. Their cover was unnecessary against the sorcerer’s cantrip as the bolt barely covers half the distance between Alstaer and his target before hitting the dirt uselessly.

The two remaining goblins make their attack…
Seeing that he is being rushed by Mathias, Goblin 2 attempts to fire an arrow at the advancing soldier. This shot hits this time, striking Mathias in the belly for 8HP of Damage.
Goblin 3 decides that the ranger is the biggest threat to their ambush right now and attempts to try and trade arrow for arrow with Osvaldo. The arrow barely hits Osvaldo, glancing off his legs, but does 4HP of damage. He then sprints from behind the dead horse he was using as cover, climbs the embankment, and attempts to hide in the foliage he dives into, but he fails to penetrate the woods deep enough and he remains seen by the party.

Quinny slowly advances forward, and remains standing out in the open on the trail.

Despite the painful arrow embedded in his stomach, Mathias advances around the side of the dead horse and raises his battleaxe. With a heavy downward cut he slams the blate into the goblins chest, sinking it deep. The goblin groans and blood spurts from its lips, and it sneers menacingly at the fighter standing over him. It’s badly wounded but not dead.

Seeing the Goblin he was targeting lying dead on the ground, Severus dashes to Mathias' aid. As the barbarian notices his comrades wound, Severus begins to rage and lets out a terrible bellow as he bears down on the second Goblin
OOC:
I calculate Severus should be able to get to R10, and flank Goblin 2. Severus is raging (bonus action) for one minute - 10 rounds of combat

"Battle excites me!" Quinny laughs maniacally as her euphoria sends her in a barbarian's state of rage! The half-orc runs towards her mark and lashes at the goblin with her whip.

Wapesh! The sound of cracking whip fills the silence together with Quinny's laughter.
OOC:

Do we use the same initiative every round, until combat is over, or roll a new initiative every round?

OOC:
In 5e, Initiative rolls are made at the beginning of the encounter, and turn order remains the same every round of the encounter.
You do not re-roll Initiative every turn.

That being said, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you don't post your PCs action until your turn is up. This is especially true if your PCs turn comes after the enemy's turn. If you post that your character is moving to a specific space and attacking a specific target, and the enemy's turn comes before yours and they move to a different space on the battlemap, you've basically moved your token to an empty space and forfeited your action for the round. If you post out of turn, and your posting becomes obsolete by the time your PC's turn comes up in the round, you forfeit your turn. As the DM, there's is no guarantee I'm going to leave a monster standing in a specific place simply because someone declared out of turn that they were going to attack that monster when their PC's turn eventually comes up later in Initiative order.

At this point we're still resolving Severus's actions for Round 2. I'm going to assume that this is going to be Quinny's Action when her turn comes up in Round 3. I appreciate the enthusiasm and I'm going to allow it this time, but from here on out I'm going to insist that players don't post their PC's actions until I declare a new round has begun, and I strongly recommend you wait until your PC's turn is actually up or risk your post turning obsolete as circumstances change.

Severus crashes through the foliage, hops down from the trail's embankment and runs to flank the Goblin engaged in combat with Mathias immediately going into a barbarian rage at the sight of the goblin's badly bleeding chest.
OOC:
Round 2 ends! Round 3 begins!
Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Osvaldo
2. Alstaer
3. Goblins
4. Quinny
5. Mathias
6. Severus

Mathias and Severus have Goblin 2 flanked, and any melee attacks by Mathias and Severus are at Advantage against Goblin 2 only assuming the Goblin is still alive and flanked on their turn.

Fire bolt Vs Goblin 3 - (1d20+5)

(3) + 5 = 8

[ooc/]Alright my apologies, Mallow, you are correct. I understand now what happened there. Quinny’s attack is in fact successful. The critical hit applies. According to the Player’s Handbook (PHB, Pg. 196) the whip damage is normally 1d4 + Ability Modifier (Strength in this case, which is +2 for Quinny). Proficiency bonuses do not apply to weapon damage. On Critical Hits, such as in this case, you roll your weapon’s damage twice, and then add your ability modifier. So Quinny’s normal whip damage is 1d4+2. On a critical hit it’s 2d4+2. In this case it would be (3)+(4)+2, for a total of 9. She then does an extra +2 damage for Barbarian Rage (PHB, pg 47), and 1d4 (4) additional Weapon Damage for Savage Attack (PHB, pg. 41). Quinny does a total of 15 damage for this attack.

So going back to Round 2...[/ooc]

Quinny approaches the goblin battling with Mathias and sends the end of her whip sailing over the horse’s carcass. Despite the goblin being nearly entirely hidden behind the dead animal’s body, the whip smashes into the goblin’s skull with an explosive snap, smashing bits of skull into shrapnel, as pieces hit her companions standing on both sides of the creature. The goblin falls to the ground, more or less lacking a recognizable head.

OOC:
NOW Round 3 begins!
Osvaldo takes aim at the final goblin, who is making his way for the cover of the woods and fires, and this time his arrow misses its mark.

Alstaer also takes aim at the goblin, and sends another fireball sailing well off into the foliage, hopefully to gutter out before setting the woods on fire.

The Goblin sends an arrow down on the raging half-orc who just destroyed its companion’s skull with her whip, hitting her in the ribs for 5 HP Damage. He then attempts to dash into the woods hoping to hide himself in the dense foliage, however the moving trees and brush gives general location away.
OOC:
While the goblin isn’t hidden (he failed to roll higher than anyone’s Passive Perception on his "Hide" Bonus Action, he does benefit from ¾ cover, meaning his armor class is at +5 while in the trees.

"You dare hurt me?!" She drops her whip and draws one axe then she charges towards the hidden goblin and once close enough she throws the axe at it.

Ah yes, thank you for the catch! You are correct. With Quinny's Rage, she only takes 2HP of Damage and should be at 13 now.

OOC:
Hmm, I didn't catch that... Alright, we'll sort it out later.

Quinny rushes drops her whip on the ground and rushes at the goblin. After scrambling up the side of the embankment she sends her hand-axe at her enemy. Had they still been on the road the throw would likely have split her target’s skull down the middle, but sailing through the woods as it is, the hurling blade crashes through dense overgrowth and barely misses its mark, and barehanded as she is now, Quinny realizes she’s going to have to find that damn axe somewhere in there later.

Mathias doubles over, teeth gritted at the the arrow embedded in his stomach. The wound isn’t necessarily going to kill him outright, but the pain is crippling.

Severus rushes up the embankment and charges through the brush, grabbing hold of the goblin with outstretched arms, he catches him just in time, and holds tight. The goblin squirms momentarily in a feeble attempt at escape, but feeling the constricting strength of Barbarian Rage smothering the life from his lungs, the goblin concedes that he has no hope of escaping the grip of his captor and goes limp.

"Yahktok! Uggh!... Glarkvak surrenders!" the goblin says.

OOC:
For the moment, it appears that the encounter is over with three dead goblins and one currently captive. Mathias, Osvaldo, and Quinny have been wounded by arrow attacks; some in worse shape than others.

Feel free to ignore Initiative turn orders, as we go bock to roleplaying in character again.

Rolls

Goblin Grapple Resist - (1d20+2)
