As the tension in the air begins to recede, the stableboy and groom bring three horses to the men. The one doing all the talking and two others mount the animals and give the reins a tug to steer them in the direction of the road heading east. "Aye, proper indeed, the man doing all the talking says to Alice. "Well, see you 'round, 'neighbor'", he says with a grin and gives his horse a small nudge in the stirrups. While the three unmounted men jog to keep pace with the animals, the group of men head out of town, the innkeep and blacksmith watching them go.

Alice sneers at the men as they depart. These types of deplorables were nothing new, just not the usual sort to frequent a village this size. She turns back to the barman,

Are your girls all right sir? Those vagabonds didn't harm them did they?

"do we try’n follow ‘em? I knows we ain’t got ‘orses, but they’ll not be too fleet wiv only three on ‘orseback"
Oct 26, 2020 4:35 pm
Angel steps out from behind his hidey-hole and joins the rest of the group. "Maybe they'll run afoul of the local bandits. Or maybe they are the local bandits." Speaking directly to the Innkeeper and the Blacksmith he asks, "Did either of you recognize them or has anyone got a description of the bandits?"
Oct 26, 2020 5:07 pm
The innkeeper continues to watch the men leave for a moment before he responds to Alice. "Nah, the girl will be fine. They got a bit 'grabby' wi' her, and she clouted one o' them side 'is 'ead. He made to knock 'er one back but found themselves looking at the business end o' me crossbow I keep back behind the bar. She's got 'er feathers a bit ruffled, but it 'appens from time to time. STILL! It's not the sort o' tavern I run 'ere and it'll not be tolerated!"

Realizing he's getting his temper up, he calms himself before continuing. "Truth be stated plainly, I'm less concerned wi' what jes' 'appened inside as I am wi' who those men are. Rumors been swirlin' aroun' of late that brigands 'ave been hitting travelers on the outskirts o' town. About a month ago Black Jay found two o' 'is dogs shot through wi' arrows and after takin' a 'ead count discovered a 'andful o' 'is livestock missin'. Others in town claim to 'ave seen a few armed strangers comin' and goin' but rarely 'ave they come into town direct 'fore now.

"As sergeant o' the militia, I think it might be prudent I go an report this to the Captain. Might be nothin', but those men come in armed for fightin' and no' well kitted for travelin' far. Meanwhile, the good wife an' me daughters can mind the inn an' tavern if you folks be needin' anything."
Oct 26, 2020 9:51 pm
As long as we're staying in your establishment sir, you can count on us to come to your family's aid should trouble arise. I suggest you not go alone if you have far to travel. I know those sort of men and I know the murder in their hearts.

Alice looks around at all those who stood together, including the blacksmith, and gives each a nod of thanks.
Oct 26, 2020 9:58 pm
Angel asks, "Where do you have to go to talk to the Captain? I'll come along if it would help."
Oct 27, 2020 1:48 am
Nodding at Angel's offer, That is a good idea Innskeep, I would be happy to serve as escort as well. I'd like to see if the Captain knows anything about this crew.

The entire time, Kelric is watching the men to see which direction they go and see if he can spot their destination.

"In fer a copper, in fer a gold. I’d be ‘appy to ‘elp too. I can either come wi’ as escort, or stay at yer inn till youse get back, if yer want someone yer watch out fer yer place an’ women"

Those that keep an eye on the men are able to follow their progress for about 500ft before a bend in the road takes them around a low mound, where you see the beginnings of a smallish castle being built by laborers. To observe their progress further one would have to follow them.

As they disappear from view, the innkeeper turns back to you. To him, you're just travelers that have brought a delivery of wheels to Brother Smythe and ran into a small scrap with some gnolls along the way. You're basically just new guests at his inn, so he looks at you all a bit skeptically when you offer to join him to report to the Captain of the militia. "I'm not ot sure it's necessary yeh accompany me, but it's a free village, an' you can come an' go as yeh please. I can't say as I see why the Captain would 'ave need o' yeh though. An' you look like yeh could use a couple days' rest, if yeh don' mind me sayin'" he says looking Coulson. "But as I said, it's a free village until it isn't and if yer jes' passin' time and lookin' to meet the locals, yeh c'n walk with me and introduce yerselves if yeh like. He' lives just a short walk over there." He nods in the southwest direction.
OOC:
I'll take a moment to let each of you decide what you want to do... Whether you want to join the innkeeper or hang back at the inn, or visit anywhere else in town. I'm not saying there is a point to meeting with the captain of the militia, but I'm not saying there's not a point in meeting with him either. What becomes of a meeting with the captain is largely dependent on how you wish to engage with him and what your aims are. But if you go meet the captain and don't have much to say, then probably nothing will come of it but an awkward introduction and I don't want you guys to be like "well crap, that was a waste of two days of Play-by-Posting". But if you have some specific intentions with meeting him, it could be a very productive meeting.

In other words, don't think I'm railroading you into meeting with this person. The thing about this module that I like is that it's essentially designed to be a big sandbox village. Almost anyone can be of use if you play things a certain way and none of them may be useful if you play it a different way.

So the innkeeper starts walking south to visit with the captain of the militia. Who is going where and doing what?
Oct 27, 2020 9:59 pm
Angel walks alongside the Innkeeper. "I was thinking it would be a much longer journey. It's almost within hailing distance."
Oct 27, 2020 10:08 pm
With a shrug, the dwarf ambles along behind Angel
Oct 28, 2020 1:40 am
Kelric thinks of following the group that caused trouble, but getting caught spying on six men could prove to be a poor decision. He slings his bow over his shoulder and follows the rest of the group.
Oct 28, 2020 10:48 am
Falling into step with Kelric, Coulson looks sidelong at him "If these fellas are as loud an’ I’ll disciplined as they seem, we’ll find em pretty easy enough lad"
Oct 30, 2020 9:13 pm
The innkeeper begins walking along the road going south. "Name’s Ostler, by the way. Ostler Gundigoot. Me an’ the goodwife run the Wench along with our two daughters. I keep a couple of serving girls in my employ along wi’ two potboy apprentices, who you’ve likely met."

After about 275 feet, the road forks with one branch continuing south while the other breaks off to the west, taking you about 225 feet to the last house in the village.
OOC:
This house is #2 on the Village Map.
Quote:
Clean but slightly run-down buildings indicate that this farm is not very prosperous. However, the stock appears quite healthy and plump. An active lad of 12 or so is doing chores. Nothing appears of particular interest.
"Hello, Sergeant," says the boy hauling a bucket of slop, or grain, something else of the like. "Come to see the master of the house?"

"Aye, is ‘e ‘ome lad?"

"Yes sir."

After knocking on the door, it’s answered by an elderly woman. She greets Ostler warmly, and invites everyone in. Inside you find an elderly man sitting at a dining room table eating pieces of a cut up sausage. While he’s getting up there in age, he still looks practiced as a soldier and after greeting Ostler as well, he immediately cuts to the chase, inquiring about the sergeant’s visit.

Ostler pretty much reports events as they were presented to or witnessed by those in your party:
Some men armed with short swords and crossbows entered the tavern and ordered a round of ale. His serving girl brought them their drinks. When they went to order a second round, the girl went to retrieve them and one of the men grabbed her arm and pulled her into his lap. She clouted him and the man made to hit her and Ostler immediately had his crossbow trained on the man, ordering them all to leave without even waiting for payment for the first round.
They went outside acting none too contrite and awaited as their three horses were brought to them, then arrogantly left town on the east road, past the new castle being constructed.
Ostler explains that while he has no proof that they might be the brigands that are rumored to be prowling around the area, he has a strong gut feeling that they may be trouble for Hommlet nonetheless.

The man listens to the sergeant’s story and ponders on it a moment while working a bite of sausage, before asking Ostler what he wishes done about it. Ostler replies that he would like to get a half dozen men from the militia and see if they can’t discover where the men from the tavern went, where they are staying, and what they’re doing here.

The man chews another bite of meat, seeming to weigh this as well. But instead of giving his consent to Ostler he suddenly turns his gaze on the four of you, giving each of you a long lookover while appraising your weapons and armor. Up until this moment, he hadn’t even glanced in your direction.

"And who might you be," he asks. "It’s unlikely I wouldn’t recognize a man of my own militia, let alone four of you. Let me guess… You’re some of Rufus and Burne’s mercenaries."

Before you can answer Ostler cuts in, "Actually, Captain, they’re guests at the inn."

"Mmm-hmm…" he says, nodding and chewing. "Well, what the hell do you want?" His question doesn't seem aggressive, so much as a flat inquiry.

We wish to be of service good sir. I am Sister Alice of the Church of Saint Cuthbert, and these men are Coulson, Kelric, and Angel. We came to town on a delivery to your smith and witnessed Ostler chasing off those delinquents. Heard you might be having some trouble with bandits and gods fearing folk that we are decided to help.

Alice keeps her gaze stern and steady as she delivers her pitch.
Oct 31, 2020 5:52 am
Angel stands as much as he can behind Sister Alice trying not to meet anyone's eyes.
Oct 31, 2020 9:52 am
"Aye, the Sister is righ’. We done gone got rid o’ some Gnolls on our ways ‘ere an’all. Our jobs as caravan guards is done an’ dusted, an’ while I reckon havin’ them bandits roamin around is good fer the caravan guard business, tha’s abou’ all their good fer. We would be ‘appy ter ‘elp. Ever’one in this town ‘as been a gracious ‘ost since we arrived, wed like ter repay the kindness". Coulson makes sure to meet the old soldiers eye
Oct 31, 2020 3:48 pm
"Mmm-hmm... Gnolls, eh"? The man listens to you all and seems to weigh it over in his head. "Well listen, you don't live in our community so you can't be part of the village militia. If you're not part of the militia, I haven't got any authority over you, nor can I order you to look into this matter.
"That being said, my sergeant here has a keen eye, and I trust his judgement. If he has concerns about the men at his inn today, or reason to believe that they could be trouble, I'd certainly like to address it while the problem's small."

He turns to Ostler. "Sergeant, I haven't the authority to pay your new friends here, but if they're willing to do a bit of reconnaissance and find the whereabouts of the men who molested your server, we can take the information to the Village Elder and the at the next council meeting. If it's decided that they're to be run off from the village maybe we can arrange for payment of services, but until then, you would be collecting information on these men at your own exp--" Before he can finish his statement a man comes barging into the house, knocking over a couple of brooms kept by the front door to sweep out any dirt and debris that gets tracked inside the house.

He's of decent size, with strong-looking arms and a barrel chest, wearing plain clothes and carrying a dagger on his belt, the hilt of which looks very finely crafted. Alice is the only person who recognises him as one of the patrons of the tavern, recalling seeing him sitting at the end of the bar when you first arrived, chatting with one of the serving girls whenever she wasn't waiting on patrons. As he finishes standing the brooms up again he walks in and pauses a moment, looking at everyone in the room. His gaze seems glazed over by drink and he's a bit wobbly as he takes in the house's occupants before he says, "Father... Mother... Sergeant..." nodding to each in turn.

"Elmo," the captain replies cooly. "I see you've been keeping my sergeant's torches lit for him at the Tavern, as usual."

The man doesn't reply, but Ostler looks a bit sheepish as the captain resumes addressing your party. "As I was saying. I haven't the authority to give you orders or pay you for your services at the moment, because you're not part of our militia, but if you were to manage to provide us with some valuable information regarding these men: Where they're staying, how many there are, if they're well armed... that sort of thing, we may take it to the village council, and if it's decided that these men need to be run out of town you might then be paid for your services for any assistance you might be able to provide in doing so."

He then resumes attending to his plate of sausages as if the matter is closed.

The man, who the captain addressed as "Elmo", takes all this in and chimes in, his manner slow and halting. He seems a bit tipsy when he says, "You talking about the men who Sergeant Gundigroot run off?" He nods like he's thinking on something before continuing. "Hmm... Could be dangerous, just the four of you... Say, weren't you with a couple of elves when you came into the Wench earlier? Anyway, like I said, could be dangerous. Might be you could use some help, eh? I myself have been known to wield an axe with some skill, provided it's a big enough axe, and I can find myself in and out of a set if chainmail easily enough without getting lost. If you're willing to provide me a set of chain and a big enough axe I could see that you collect your information safely, what do you say?"

Turning to Elmo, Coulson replies to him, slightly awkward as it’s obviously the lads home
well lad, yer offer is well met, cos as yer say, yeah we was with some elves when we arrived, but ain’t no more. And though yer offer is welcome, we ain’t really able ter kit youse out wit a set o’ chain. If yer able to find yer own gear though...... He tails off, giving a none to subtle look towards Elmo’s father, who, being head of the militia, must be able to source something serviceable for his son
