Hearing Sister Alice mention horses, Coulson chimes in with a gruff "An’ a lance ter go wi’ the war’orse if yer can do it". He turns to the halfling "Pleasure young Miss. be nice ter have some more long range cover in’ us"

@charles.c.cowley:
The man watches cooly as Eltrezar fishes in his purse and grabs his coins. As the fifth coin plinks into the box and the druid sees Eltrezar's hands are empty he finally smiles. "Ah! Thank you so much for your generous donation! I will see to it that your contribution benefits the needy of this small village. I am indeed the druid of this grove. I go by the name of Jaroo… Jaroo Ashstaff to be more specific, just in case you find any other Jaroos wandering around this village, although admittedly I never have. Who might you be, and since I suspect you have knocked on my door for more than the simple need of helping Hommlet’s less fortunate by way of a financial contribution, how may I be of service to you?"

@everyone else:
Rannos waddles slowly to and fro, bringing axe, chainmail, and bow to the counter, breathing laboriously with the effort of hauling his girth about. After Alice asks about the rest of the equipment, he brings lantern, two flasks of oil, and a large sack to the counter. "That’ll be another twenty gold for these items."
As he waits for payment for these items his eyes light up a bit as Alice enquires about horses.
"We do indeed have some fine animals for sale, tended carefully by our groom here," he gestures at the groom sweeping the floor. I have a number of mules, draft horses, and light horses… even some ponies. At the moment I have only one medium-sized war horse. She’s a fine animal though, and I’m asking 325 gold for her. If you are in want of more war horses I can aquire them, but Gremag and I are rather picky about the animals we buy and sell, and it will take some time to find animals worthy of our approval. Anywhere from a week to one month depending on the quality of animal and how many are needed.
"Purchase the horse"
, he says, looking down at the dwarf "and I’ll throw in a lance for only 7 gold."

Alice pays the 115 gold coins in total with a smile and hands off the various items to their respective parties; bow and quiver of arrows to Gilly, axe and armor to Elmo. She stows the oil and lamp in the sack and slings it over her shoulder before turning her attention back to the shop clerk.

Thanks you sir, now I would like a price on a mule, a draft horse, a riding horse, and a two wheel cart if you please.
Nov 6, 2020 6:26 pm
"Very good, lady," Rannos says taking coin for the weapons and gear before continuing. "We have two mules, two draft horses, and four riding horses at the moment. The Draft horses sell for 50 gold, and 100 gold for the riding horses. Of the two mules, one sells for 40 gold and I have another I would sell you for 35 gold. The 35 gold mule is a fine enough animal, strong and well-bred, but she's ornery and has kicked at my groom a number of times, and even at my associate Gremag here once. I myself won't go near the beast, for as you can see", he opens his arms as if putting his large rotundness on display, "I'm doubt I'm as spry as Gremag or our groom, and fear I should not be so lucky as to escape a errant hoof to the skull.
"I have a cart available for sale for 125 gold, and can have more made by Brother Smythe if you wish to have an order placed."

Those of you in the Trading Post notice that the groom has been sweeping the same section of floor for some time now and Gremag as been standing fidgeting and nodding in agreement with everything Rannos says.

"Well met, Druid Ashstaff. My name is Eltrezar the Medium, known amongst the elves as Tarathiel, and the dwarves have called me Dalomdûmir. You are correct in surmising that I have come to your doorstep for more than just charity. I have been told that you are the area's foremost expert in woods and wood materials, and so I have walked many leagues to speak with you." Eltrezar's eyes narrow, if only for effect. "For you see, I am an enchanter of the arcane arts, and as I venture from my studies I become now in need of a staff. A token of authority, if you will. It is important that a magic-user such as myself find a wood for his staff that resonates with his soul, with his very being." With this, Eltrezar allows a smile at the corners of his mouth to peek through his beard. He stands, hands open and arms slightly spread. "And so I stand before you, humbly requesting your assistance and keen mind, that I might find the wood of my spirit."
Nov 6, 2020 7:28 pm
Looking suspiciously at the groom and the assistant, Coulson starts pulling slightly at his beard in a thoughtful manner. "Wha’s the problem ‘ere Rannos? Yer boys ‘ere seem mighty suspicious, actin’ all funny like. Summit yer need ter tell us afore we spend more good coin ‘ere?"
Nov 6, 2020 7:48 pm
Noticing the nervous behavior from the shop staff, Alice perks up her senses and glances around the shop suspiciously.

Is everything in order sir? she asks of the clerk and of the staff in general.

Your man is sweeping idly and the air is a bit nervous in here. If it is that we are strangers here I bit you fear not, I am a cleric of Saint Cuthbert and I am pledged in service to the church of this town.
Nov 6, 2020 9:02 pm
@charles.c.cowley:
Jarood listens to Eltrezar carefully, then bows graciously. "I appreciate your deferral to my expertise of the woods in this area; I should take great care to be sure my reputation is not tarnished by steering you falsely. I have tended to these woods for some time now but not any branch or bough would be fit for your needs, and I would need some time to confer with the grove. I would be better able to meditate on the matter if you would be willing to do a favor for me in return?
It seems that if the grove's whispers to me true, there are some men of a suspicious nature that I would like to know more about. And if the grove's whispers are also true there are already some itinerant men and women in search of adventure who have been tasked with gathering intelligence for the village's militia. Perhaps you would be willing to join them and return to me with a report of your findings. It would be one minor distraction I no longer have to burden this mind with, and would allow me to focus more clearly to your needs. Eh?"

@everyone else in the Trading Post:
Gremag starts nervously and Rannos seems taken aback slightly before responding with a guffaw. "No no, my little friend," he says to Coulson. "My associate Gremag here has a reputation for being a bit skittish is all. I always tell him a full belly calms the nerves, but he insists on fidgeting about the shop throughout his days. As for my groom...", and you notice him give the man with the broom a hard stare. "Perhaps the mule I've mentioned has him a bit jumpy. Surely the other animals could use some tending to, and while I'd like to commend him for the impeccable attention he's paid to that small area of my floor, I'd like to see the coin I pay him stretched a little further. Thomas, go see that the horses are brushed and presentable should our customers here choose to buy one."

The man, apparently named Thomas, sets the broom against a wall and walks out of the shop without a word. The other man, apparently master-at-arms of the shop, continues to stand quietly, sword on his hip. It seems his purpose here is simply to look intimidating to deter theft or robbery.

"As we were saying," says Rannos. "You are interested in some of our fine beasts?"
Nov 6, 2020 9:19 pm
Straining to keep a straight face, Eltrezar nods. 'Of course he needs time to commune with nature. Had I more power, a simple incantation would give me the answer, but these men of the woods...' "Absolutely. I saw the town on my approach, and it would seem the militia could use all they help they can get. I will do as you request and investigate this curiosity, though it may be beneath a man of my stature. Where might I find these strange men, or at the very least these... sigh... 'adventurers'? With this he takes a step back, moving back towards Isolde, and not looking forward to arguing with her back into the town.

@charles.c.cowley:
"I believe they may be staying at The Welcome Wench. It is the inn and local watering hole," and he points at the inn right across the road.

Gilly puts out her hands and accepts the bow almost reverently. As a knight would receive a sword.

She pulls the bowstring to test it out, while the others discuss prices. She senses that things have taken a strange turn suddenly, with Coulson and Sister Alice.

Thats a lot of money and we haven’t see a single horse yet

She pipes up, emboldened by the back up she didn’t have earlier today:

"Spose we can see the horses then?"

OOC:
Damn you people are too fast for me. I've had too much other stuff to do the last couple days and had trouble finding time to get on here. If Angel knew before a purchase was made that Gilly needed a small bow he would have offered her his since he was planning on buying a larger one.
If he is able to stop the transaction for the bow, Angel will hand his to Gilly and say, "Take a look at this one. It's still in very good condition and I won't charge you a farthing for it. I was looking for a larger one anyway."
Nov 7, 2020 1:24 am
Kelric looks around but just tends to the stables to look at the horses while everyone procures their items.

ooc: He just joined the group, so I've got him well equipped for the moment.
Nov 7, 2020 3:02 am
OOC:
hopefully we can retcon that bow purchase, still need a quiver of arrows for sure
Nov 7, 2020 5:06 am
OOC:
Yeah, we can retcon the bow purchase. I'll put the gold back in Alice's inventory on my spreadsheet.

A quiver of arrows is 6 gold at the Trading Post.

I shall keep my above posting. Instead, taking the bow from Angel!
Nov 7, 2020 6:56 am
"Well then, s’long as yer fellas ain’t naught but a little odd, mayhaps we can do business. The halfling is righ’, let’s see yer ‘orses"
Nov 7, 2020 8:58 am
"Then I will take my leave for now, Druid Ashstaff. I will return with answers, and hope to return to progress on your end. Good day." With a little 'humph!', Eltrezar turns about face and begins heading to the inn. While it was not where one would find the most seemly company, the wizard did have a weakness for a stout ale and a dry chicken. Perhaps today would be a good day, after all. On his short walk, he keeps his eyes peeled for any that show a glimmer of hope in their eyes, that a townsfolk would lack. Or the glimmer of gold.
Nov 7, 2020 5:39 pm
@Aldrusian:
Gremag watches Angel give his bow to Gilly and for the first time speaks up, saying, Ahem, heheh, yes yes... Erm... Certainly a lot of trading being done at the trading post, eh? Perhaps, eh... perhaps he could get in on some of this trading as well, no? Eh... If you happen to be looking to replace that fine bow of yours we have some respectable pieces of our own?" He pulls a shortbow and a longbow from his shelves. "Eh, this here is a fine replacement if you're looking for a new shortbow... Only 35 gold. And, ehm, if your looking to get a little more distance from your arrows, this is a fine longbow. Only 50 gold. We, uh... we also have arrows of course... 6 gold for a quiver of twenty..."

@Shadowace:
Kelric, having no need for any new equipment, wanders off to look at the animals while his new companions are inside negotiating their purchases. You see a number of horses in their stables: four riding horses, two draft horses, and a medium-sized war horse. Two mules stand outside of the stables eating from a pile of hay, tethered to heavy metal links fastened to the ground to prevent them from leaving the premises but still get some exercise. All of the animals look in fine shape and well cared for and it's evident that the Trading Post owners make efforts to keep their stock well taken care of, if for no other reason than to keep their value up.
As Kelric is admiring the animals a man comes from the shop and approaches the barn. He is the shop's groom and was sweeping the floor inside earlier. He enters the barn without looking up at Kelric and grabs a brush from a shelf on the barn's wall and begins brushing the coat of one of the mules when suddenly the other mule sends out a swift kick at the groom, knocking the handbrush out of the man's hand where it goes clattering against the side of one of the stables spooking one of the horses inside a bit. The man jumps out of the way shaking his hand, anger in his face, when he sees Kelric for the first time.
The anger evaporates as he shakes his head ans says, "This one, I tell ye... She's a fussy one, she is. Can't tell yeh how many times she's done that. Between you an' me, Mr. Rannos and Mr. Gremag ought to be markin' down the price o' this one a lot more than a mere five gold, an' the sooner they sell her, even at a loss, the 'appier I'll be about comin' in to work every day. But what do I know; I just work as th' groom o' this stable, eh? Anyone buys her though, I tell yeh, they're goin' to 'ave their work cut out for them breakin' 'er. She's a nasty one."

@charles.c.cowley
OOC:
I think then that we have Eltrezar adequately tied into the reason for going on the adventure. Now we just have to get the party together fully together, which hopefully shouldn't take much longer. In the mean time...
Eltrezar heads to the Tavern of the Welcome Wench. It's probably getting close to somewhere around 6pm, meaning before long shops will be closing, and those that are inclined to slake a thirst after a hard day's work will slowly start streaming inside. If nothing else it may be a good place to observe some of the locals. One of the serving girls quickly attends to the wizard after he finds a seat and takes his order of ale and dry chicken, telling the wizard that that will be 5 silver before wandering off to the kitchen to have the food prepared.

@everyone else:
Rannos hears Alice and Coulson mention seeing at the animals, and gestures to the direction the the barn, inviting you to head out to where Thomas has went. He doesn't seem to have any interest in going with, and you get the feeling that even such a short trip might leave him winded.
Gremag however offers to join you, and as you get out you find Kelric in the barn looking at the beasts. Thomas the groom is speaking to Kelric, seemingly wrapping up some bit of conversation. The barns has a number goats, sheep, and other lesser livestock milling about. You also see a number of horses in their stables: four riding horses, two draft horses, and a medium-sized war horse. Two mules stand outside of the stables eating from a pile of hay, tethered to heavy metal links fastened to the ground to prevent them from leaving the premises but still get some exercise. All of the animals look to be in fine shape and well cared for and it's evident that the Trading Post owners make efforts to keep their stock well taken care of.

Angel eyes the long bow and grasps it the gauge its weight and balance and its pull. "This will do just fine and I'll take two quivers. And do you have any swords that are better than this one?" He presents his short sword again.
