Chapter 1 - Goblin Arrows

Dec 21, 2020 8:32 pm
A half a day has passed since the group has started down the Triboar Trail and once again Tyr - a young half-elf hired by Gundren to drive the cart and tend to the oxen - is relentlessly regaling everyone with one of his ‘this is an absolute true, why would I lie, just ask my friends’ stories…

"So I look this Arch Lich - I’m pretty sure it was Acereraks’ boss - I look him right in the eye and draw my sword and I say ‘You may be a Lich, but your mama was a`", but before he can finish the sentence he draws back hard on the reins. The oxen shudder in protest but obediently come to a stop. Ahead of you, maybe fifty feet, are two dead horses sprawled across the road, each with several black feathered arrows sticking out of its hide.

"Ewww, gross" Tyr whines "You’re going to need to clear those things from the road if we’re going anywhere."

Unfortunately, Tyr is correct; but at least he has stopped talking for the moment. The woods press close to the trail, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side making the trail all but impassable without moving the dead horses.

As the cart suddenly jerked to a halt, Gerbo is roused from a light doze. Rubbing feeling back into the arm he had slept awkwardly on, he peeked over the top of the cart and saw the horses. Settling back into the wagon, he pulled a hat back down over his hazel-colored eyes with a smirk. "One of you big boys can take care of that. I'll supervise from here."

After getting comfortable again, he suddenly processed the sight of the arrows in the dead animals and poked his head up again over the top of the cart, looking for any sign that the archers were still around.
OOC:
Let me know if I should be doing something different with rolls. As I said, it's my first PbP.

Dont look at me, I cant do much heavy lifting Grim says Besides, anyone not think this is strange? If it was hunters, they would have taken them or at least carved them up a bit.
Dec 24, 2020 4:50 pm
The half orc had been quietly meditating as the cart trundled along. The sudden jolt snaps her out of the trance. She hops down from the back with a grunt. She stands just short of 6ft, her jet black hair blowing in the breeze as she rounds the cart and sees the horses. She assumed it was just another tree to move from the road. But horses. "Who done this?" her voice harsh and rasping.

She was used to the natural life cycle. Predator and prey. She's killed her fair share of animals for food, but never for fun. She starts to feel her orcish anger building.
Dec 24, 2020 8:02 pm
"Hm." Orel heaves himself out of the cart, landing on the road with a heavy thud. "That's a shame... maybe it was some bandits wanting to get at the people riding them?" He scratches the back of his head in confusion, casting his eyes over the party.

He sighs. "Well, Kerisha, looks like you and I are the strong ones here. Want to help me move these bodies?" He begins to slowly walk towards the horses, his legs warming up from having been sat in the cart for a while.
OOC:
Do the horses have saddles? Saddlebags?
Dec 24, 2020 11:28 pm
By the gods and I thought my ramblings were bad but this seems way far fetched.

Seeing the other travelers get out. "If we're sending them to do the heavy lifting. The rest of us should be on alert incase those possible bandits come back. Just like that time.... " Belanor glances at the driver Tyr.
Belanor scans the area near the horses while keeping a hand on his sword.
oh deer please don't let me actually have to use this. I got this for show... Belanor sighs.

From his position in the front of the cart, a good fifty feet from the horses, Gerbo cannot make out any of the details about the arrows used in the attack. What he does detect while carefully eyeing the surroundings is a bit of movement in the thickets to the right of the road, a little way further down than the horses.

Approaching the scene, Orel and Kerisha come to the harsh realization of what they are looking at; Gundren’s and Sildar’s steeds. The saddlebags of both horses have been looted, leaving nothing behind but a few odds and ends of little value. A leather map bag, with Gundren’s monogram clearly visible on the flap, lies open near the side of the road.

Suddenly, from the right rush two goblins, crashing through the growth that encroaches the trail. The smaller one wields a short sword and is holding a small wooden shield. The larger one, with a scimitar in one hand and what appears be a large pot lid in the other, cries out in a voice that can only be described as a mix between a small child’s raspy scream and a cat vomiting up a hairball, "BREE-YARK!!" Whatever their intentions, it does not appear that they are here to surrender.

Tyr, seeing the two goblins emerge from the thickets, screams, and throws himself into the back of the crowded wagon, ducking down between two crates and remaining out of site. For all his talk it is clear the young half-elf will not be of any help when things turn nasty. Of course, sometimes it is better to be a coward than to be brave. Just as Tyr settles into his hiding spot, two black feathered arrows embed themselves into the front of the wagon.
OOC:
Two goblins, A and B, rush to engage Orel and Kerisha, while two others emerge from further down the road and start launching arrows at the wagon. A and B are within movement range of everyone, C and D would take at least two movement actions to get to.

Gerbo
Goblin C (Archer)
Orel, Grim, Kerisha, Belanor (any order)
Goblins A(Small Goblin), B (Big Goblin), D (Archer)

Quickly processing what he was seeing, Gerbo tossed his hat and hopped off the back of the cart. "Time to go to work," he cracked (doing his best to sound sure of himself), as he grabbed his shortbow from the alcove he had it tucked and knocked an arrow.

Well, goblins may be mean buggers, but I like big one's style. I got to get a shield like that!

He laughed to himself, now calmed slightly by the thought of using a pan lid as a shield, and stepped out from behind the cart. Drawing the arrow back, he took aim at the first goblin archer he lays eyes on and released.

Looking out over the target rich environment, one of the goblin archers sneers - too easy. But before he can even raise his bow, Gerbo's missile finds its target, passing right through the little goblin's head, killing it instantly.

Without missing a beat, Orel draws his sword, stepping towards Goblin A and swinging for the neck.

"Keep one of them alive! We should ask them about Gundren!" he yells to the rest.

The goblin just ducks under Orel’s swing, using its wooden shield to help deflect the blow. Momentarily thrown off guard the creature quickly comes back to what little senses it has and presses its attack, short sword at the ready.

The warlock’s blast finds it mark, striking the remaining archer square in the chest. It stumbles back a half a step and prepares to return fire, drawing back on its bow.

When the goblin charge begins, Kerisha looks around and locks eyes with the larger goblin. She lets that rage build a little more as she draws her huge sword. Notches and nicks in the blade already show its had a hard life. brutal battles as part of the hordes training and the internal power struggle. She always believed that even a group who are weaker but fighting as a team, lead to much more strength than any individual. With Orel at her side, this goblin ambush was doomed. She charges to meet the larger goblin (goblin B)

Seeing Tyr jump into the cart and hide, Belanor also paniks as he ducks down as low as he can in the front of the wagon.
Yup! I knew it. Not long after I get this stupid sword i'd have to use it. Curses.

"AhHa! Lets see if this will work!"

Belanor pulls a wand from his vest and begins to chant. "Jiu mo gwai gwaai faai di zau"

Casting sleep; attempting to target the 2 goblins (A&B) C if it can reach but i doubt it.

From relative safety in front of the wagon Belanor witnesses his incantation take effect. The two goblins battling with Orel and Kerisha slowly fall to their knees, their weapons dropping from their hands as each try to maintain consciousness. It is to no avail, however, as both fall fast asleep at the feet of their opponents.

Watching his little comrades fall, the remaining goblin drops its bow and beats feet across the trail, crashing into the thickets on the opposite side and thrashing his way deeper into the undergrowth.

Orel blinks a few times, swaying on his feat as the cloud of magical sleep washes over him. "Woah..." he looks towards Belanor, "That's... fantastic..."

He shakes his head vigorously, pulling his shield off of his back and strapping it onto his arm as his action, looking around for any more threats (although not using an action to make a perception check). "I have some rope we could use to tie these two up?" The idea of chasing the fleeing Goblin doesn't even cross his mind.
Dec 28, 2020 10:01 pm
The large goblin in front of her falls to its knees. "Time to die".

Kerisha lifts her sword over her head like an executioner, ready to strike. Her eyes start to feel heavy and her breathing slows. The weight of her sword becoming too much, she falls backwards and wakes with a grunt.
Dec 28, 2020 10:46 pm
Perfect! Belanor thinks.
He slowly rises up from his false cover. "That would be wise I don't expect those two to be out for long. Perhaps look after your friend there and make sure she's ok also." Belanor hollers to the 2 near the horse.
